Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted?

Fashion designing has always been something that I have enjoyed all my life. For me, designing is more like catharsis and I have always been finding ways to express my creativity through different means. It is my vital course of action for ultimate rejoices.

As I said before, I find Fashion designing therapeutic hence what is better than doing a job that does not only help you grow stronger as a person but you enjoy it too immensely.

Did you ever feel discouraged mid-way your routine? How did you push through it?

This is a “Never have I ever” kind of a situation in my case, I take discouragements as a challenge and seek my way through it only to come out stronger than before. Also, I have always had a very strong support system and it makes me feel content with whatever I have.

Describe a typical day in your life?

My day starts with a healthy breakfast with my family early in the morning. What advice would you give to young girls who look upto you and have goals and dreams like you?

I would advise all aspiring designers to try to start from scratch because it helps in developing your own ideas and a signature style from the very beginning, which is important in order to succeed in the rapidly growing fashion industry.

T

here was a girl in my university who stopped eating because she was called too fat. The rare occasion at which she would eat would be followed by an episode of pharyngeal poking just enough to initiate a gag reflex. She eventually became a formally diagnosed bulimic.

There was another one who started hating herself every time she looked at the mirror. She was told she was too dark, too hairy, too ugly. She would scrub and scrape at her skin for hours until it was red and itchy. Until it flaked and ultimately fell. She eventually started getting temporary whitening injections and a permanently damaged self-esteem.

There was this boy who was always laughed at because of the one time that he was caught crying. He cried that one time because he lost his only parent.

And some more, each time his dignity was stripped off of him and shred into pieces.

There was another one who was physically assaulted for no reason at all. Maybe it was because he was too weak to fight back. He eventually broke his arm. And never came back to school.

There was the girl who simply answered the question right, but felt her teachers’ hand run over her head and down her back, in a way that she knew wasn’t “fatherly” or platonic. She eventually stopped answering questions in class.

Then there was the short girl who only wore heels, the tall girl who only wore flats, the girl who wore concealer to hide her acne scars, the girl who stuffed herself to not appear so flat, the girl who couldn’t take it anymore, the girl who eventually stopped coming to school, the boy who was kicked until he was bruised, the boy who stopped playing in the field, the boy who started doing drugs and the one who eventually let a train cross over him.

When I started studying psychiatry during my third year of medical school, I started thinking about things at a more scientific level, with a more pragmatic social approach as well.

The importance of implementing our theoretical learnings into practice and mastering the art of clinical application was stressed upon on an

abnormally annoying extent: on a daily basis. During wards, I studied the unavoidable association between one’s childhood experiences and mental health in depth. There were lists of symptoms and signs, both physical and mental, that I had memorized. I was studying for my wards, to take the test, to get the degree. But even when long college hours were over, my conscience was invaded by a whole world of thoughts, forcing me to apply my theoretical knowledge into clinical scenarios. I started wondering about any role I had ever played in affecting another person’s mental health.

I started doubting my integrity as a person and started questioning my role as a timid bystander in a vicious cycle of bullying and harassment that was well prevalent around me. Was I a culprit in these heinous crimes during my years at school and later, at university as well? As a bystander, to say that I was lazy or unwilling to confront the bully, would be an incorrect statement.

I was beyond uncomfortable. I always felt sympathetic for the victim and there were countless occasions where I wished to help but decided that silence seemed safe. Safer. I always feared the bully’s attention being redirected towards me. And so, I was petrified to speak. Silence was surely, a lot safer.

What I never realized, however, was that my silence meant that I was only contributing to strengthening the bully’s belief that his/her behavior was acceptable. I never figured that my silence came at the heavy cost of the victim assuming that I agreed with bully. I did not.

My silence was innocent, my silence stemmed from my own fears, my own insecurities. But my silence did more harm than good and it got me

thinking: How passive is a victim or a bystander’s role in staying silent?

Some of our strongest weapons, as human beings, is perhaps our cognitive and vocal abilities. The power to not only process information and filter right from wrong, but to be able to also speak up against social and moral injustices. It is quite often that bystanders of bullying, succumb to a sort of “peer pressure” to support such behavior out of fear of becoming the victim. Bullying stems from an imbalance of power, with the bully repeatedly use their high social status to demonstrate their authority over the victim and mentally and physically hurt them. Bullying takes on various forms including verbal, physical, relational as well as reactive and cuts across all lines in society- race, ethnicity, gender, age.

It extends on to involve in a roughly defined area, cyber bullying, workplace bullying, outing, name calling, rumor spreading, threatening and exercising similar forms of intimidation including assault to property as well as harassment. Speaking up against all these forms of bullying, hazing and harassment can be more potent than we think. It can be thought of as a ripple effect: one pebble of speaking up thrown in can create waves of action extending far enough to spread a long way. Getting help from someone in charge, like a teacher or administrator at educational institutions, supporting victims, confronting bullies and reporting to authoritative figures are acts that can go a long way in putting an end to this toxic culture.

Human resources departments at many workplaces and universities have policies that allow employees and students to report anonymously.

Social media has played a tremendous role in silenced voices reach-

ing far and beyond, mere hashtags breaking all barriers and crossing all borders and has helped provide multiple platforms of support and sources of love, security and empathy for victims. However, where there is power, there is misuse of it as well. While social media has done wonders for this cause, it has also resulted in serving as a breeding ground for the unfortunate downside to the gift of raising one’s voice against such acts. There have been many instances where social media platforms have been wrongly used to defame innocent persons, causing the voices of the actually assaulted to drown in an ocean of drama and a never ending blamegame. The administrators governing these digital platforms and forums should exercise a greater control on the content being shared to avoid further conflicts and disagreements, and thus ensuring that the voice of true victims is heard loud and clear.

Recovering from even a single incident of bullying and harassment cannot possibly be easy. And it definitely isn’t solitary. Enough support should be extended towards victims so that they are able to talk about it. Having an empathetic approach while building friendships or relationships with people who have been victims in the past is vital for their growth as well as that of the relationship. Psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and activities boosting confidence and self-esteem should be advocated for. And every time a victim takes the brave step to speak up and share a deeply personal and traumatizing experience, verbal and emotional support should be provided. Because while it’s vital to talk about these issues, it’s almost never as easy as it seems.

What inspired you to start The BaKing?

Let me give you a little background about myself first. My first baking experience was with a family friend when I was 15. It was a plain cake but the process and end result really stimulated the inborn creative streak in me. I was always an above average student but like many of us, during university years, you sometimes become unsure of what career steps to take. I dabbled in the entertainment industry for, a bit of modelling and singing here and there but my real love was marketing so I did my Bachelors with the University of London in Business Administration and passed as an honor student. By the Grace of God I got to work in Marketing wirh some great professionals and organisations where I got to utilise my creativity in the corporate world.

I quickly realised my strengths in communication and creativity made me dependable to my employers because I am a workaholic so by the time I hit my 30's

I decided I wanted to put all that effort and zeal for my passion and be my own boss instead and benefit myself instead of anyone else's company. So I made a tough choice and let go of lucrative offers because if I didn't do it now it would be too late.

I loved desserts since a child and was a bit of a connissiour watching online recipe videos really motivated me to buy my first electrical oven almost 3 years ago.

Since then after a lot of trial and error, wasted batches,and countless YouTube videos and links, I locked the recipes that were my own for my core assorment of desserts. Alhmamdullilah the feedback has been phenomenal and they have become my signature items that are most popular with my repeat customer base which I managed to achieve in a span of less than six months since I launched online.

What challenges And obstacles did you have to face while starting this business?

The first major challenge which bakers face for expanding is capital investment in baking equipment and ingredients that are more suited for larger orders. That is quite costly and eats up all your initial profits in addition to taking loans.

One may even need to rent a place with more space to opeate as well as to have a delivery system in place which has been

made eaaier by companies like road runner and uber delivery service. The second major challenge is finding suppliers who sell in bulk and the shortage of imported items, because in this business you need a steady supply of imported ingredients for preparing western desserts. So for those who do not compromise on quality it will take time for you to break even or start turning a profit.

But my way to cope with all this is not to be overwhelmed or bite off more than I can chew. 'Baby Steps' is a term I keep repeating to my team who get too eager and offer me so many ideas being practiced by competitors.

How does the BaKing stand out from the rest of the bakers?

That is a very good question and to be honest, when I see the kind of skills and work that my competitors are doing, It can be a little daunting because the comparison to your own business which is in its teething stage can overwhelm you.

But it all becomes worth it when your customers give you their genuine brutally honest feedback. I put in months and months on simple recipes like cookiws and brownies and didn' give up until I myself was totally satisfied with the taste, texture and presentation. Very few brands rate high in all 3 departments. what sets me apart is that I know how to achieve a chewy texture and a fudge like texture with two totally different flavours just for a single item like a brownie. Most people don't know the difference between a pastry and a brownie, dark chocolate or milk chocolate. I have put in time and effort to understand the science behind baking.

Without boasting, I'll tell you that I have been told by not one, but several influencers and celebrities that my brownies and cookies are the best they have ever

tasted and no other place in Pakistan has got the precision to quality, I offer at affordable rates. At first I thought they were just being kind and over praising my work but then after hearing so many people repeat the same thing, I realized that I might be on to something. Getting so many orders purely through word of mouth and all organic likes with unpaid marketing, It is very humbling.

Can you tell us about any emerging trends in the baking industry?

The emerging trends in the business I've noticed in the last ten years is that online is where you can find the best quality desserts now more easily than ever.

Since there are reviews and feedback tabs for all to see, and the famous bakeries and eateries in most cases have dramatically decreased in quality and taste and continues to increase their prices.

Another trend in online businesses is that owners make deals with importers to supply them with copious amounts of very expensive luxurious items like Lotus, Biscoff spread, Belgian Chocolate, and they cater to a very high end, elite customer base. I dont have anything against wealthy people enjoying a good luxurious dessert but let's face it, imported items like Nutella and Lotus spread can even make a paratha tasty, so these easy to make, very overpriced recipes and indulgence items cannot be afforded by an average person. However the silver lining is that some imported baking essentials now have locally manufactured substitutes with the same quality at a much lower price, for e.g Baking Chocolate and Cream Cheese. All of a sudden there isnt a monopoly of few imported brands that were often short in the market handicapping us bakers from making the dessert we needed.

That is something I'm very happy about

that I no longer have to spend almost a thousand rupees on one 200 gram packet of imported cream cheese when I have local substitutes like Prema and Billy"s who are making excellent cream cheese locally at a far lesser retail price. Same for Dark Chocolate compound a local brand like 'Crave' has given me very impressive results. So hopefully our local industry will pick up on this trend further and improve the quality for everything from baking soda to cocoa powder all of which should be locally produced.

Do you use local ingredients in your work?

Yes even though I make western desserts, there is plenty of room to incorporate local ingredients. however whether local or imported, I make sure to use the very best quality ingredients and like I said unlike before, now there are good quality local items which will give almost the exact same end result in baking and confectionery and even enhance them if you are skilled.

Whereas traditional desi desserts are concerned, we have a running joke in the family. For those who have seen the TV show 'Friends', there's a big episode about Pheobe's Grandma's legendary Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe. Similarly all us cousins have tried various times to recreate our Grandmom's Ande (Egg) Ka Halwa with varying success . It uses lots of ingredients, time and labour but yields a small quantity in the end. Every time she makes It the entire family fights over it likes it's gold, some of them hide it to take abroad with them. I wish one day I have an infrastructure that will enable me to sell that exact recipe in bulk because in terms of taste and texture, if done right, it beats any western dessert out there

How has Covid19 effected your business ?

At first covid brought all my business to a standstill. I was in talks with two retail places who were keen to stock my items but even that deal fell apart. However when I noticed that other online businesses had started operating normally, I decided its time to properly launch and promote The BaKing as a legit online desserts and confectionery business. The page had existed since a few months but we started promotional activities less than a month back and have already reached almost 600 Instagram followers Mashallah. I have my plate full with daily orders which I am coping with. So far so good by the Grace of God I have never put in less than my one hundred percent for every order. And for anyone reading, I am looking for retail Outlets near Phase 5 DHA to stock my best, most popular items and also eateries and online food businesses who want their desserts menu designed, and need a regular supply of my items. Oh this is like choosing between your children isn't it?

I love my carrot cake which is usually underrated because very few get the frosting right which is slightly sweet and tangy cream cheese frosting I want to market it as a staple dessert in the shape of carrot cake by size squares. Nutella cheesecake is my weakness. cookies, brownies, cupcakes are my customer favourites but I hardly have them. My current ultimate favourite has to be The Banoffee Pie What do you do when you’re not baking?

I love singing, some western, some Classical, modern, or yesteryear Indian songs. I like reciting poetry, naats and Hamds. Badminton and Swimming are my favourite workout and I have really been missing it due to covid 19. Love watching Netflix and discussing my favourite movies and TV shows with friends. I am blessed to have the greatest and most supportive friends and family who all wish me well MashAllah. Then ofcourse there's my SPECIAL SOMEONE, or rather my BaQueen without whom none of this would be possible Your favourite dessert brand other than your own I cant think of one particular dessert Brand. Different places have their own specialities. 'Cafe zouk' has the best Bread Pudding. 'Hot Spot' will always be the best brownie and ice cream combo, along with their Apple Crumble with maple syrup which takes me back to my teens. There was HobNob once who did the best carrot cupcakes. Kitchen Cuisine does the best baked and unbaked Cheesecake and Strawberry Puffs and for such decent quality, they are affordable for Pakistani Market Internationally 'House of Donuts' has the best Cheesecake and donuts I've ever had. My dream is to one day be able to try loads of flavours from 'The Cheesecake Factory" in the USA. I've never had the chance but Inshallah I pray very soon I get to cross that off my bucket list.

How did you find yourself in the Executive Coach/Counselor career field?

I have been a Human Resources professional for more than 2 decades.

When I transitioned to Leadership Development and Organizational Development work, it was a natural transition to start understanding the emotional element of leaders, systems and organizations. Leaders who are emotionally intelligent have potential to influence those who work with them. It feels awesome to see that transformation.

What exactly is Executive Coaching?

Think of it as a grooming and development program for those who are responsible for others work, performance and results. If you have a manager who knows how to lead, you have an organization that is set up to perform.

Leaders inspire change, and create agency in their organizations to be better. When I work with Executives, my goal is to equip them with skills that will help them connect with their teams, make well-informed decisions and keep their employees engaged and motivated. When you help groom the person with the decision making power, it is easier to get better results.

How is it different to other, more traditional forms of coaching such as life coaching?

That is a great question. Life coaching is different in that you are working with one individual that has the potential to change their life for the better. They own it and can take action to make those changes. Leadership/ Executive coaching is training and nurturing the muscle to make changes and grow and strengthen an organization, a system, a department, a team.

It involves multiple individuals. Creating a solution for one person is much easier. Creating a solution that will work for most individuals affected by that solution is hard. I have a Masters degree that focused on Human Resources and Organizational Development. Creating a sustainable change for an organization requires a much stronger muscle.

What kind of education would you say is instrumental to becoming an executive coach? Are there required licenses that one must have to enter this field?

Extensive training, experience and strong communication skills make the backbone of an executive coach. A never-ending quest for learning new techniques and being aware of best practices is an investment an executive coach needs to commit to. Opportunities to practice the skill at low to mid career management level can be a great start.

Can you tell us a little about the kind of care and treatment you offer your clients? What is it exactly that you do to help them?

The portfolio of Executive Coaching Expertise I focus on to support client organizations includes Executive Coaching, Succession Planning, Designing Leader and High Potential Development Programs that support the present and future needs of the Organization, Team Building and Off-site retreats for motivation, and Organizational Design issues they may have, to name a few Do you have any amazing stories of coaching successes that you can share with us?

I am grateful I have so many. I have to say that at the level of leadership I work at, I am very protective of my clientele. I have had the pleasure of working with high profile clients. I feel fortunate to have been a part of their journeys and tremendous growth, without needing to name them to feel credible. My work speaks for itself. Confidentiality is key in my work.

What types of clients do you mostly work with?

My clientele is very diverse in their needs. I have worked with Physicians to help groom them to become the top person to run hospitals and universities. I have worked with Leaders who came from humble backgrounds and needed to learn public speaking and professional finesse. I have worked to help organizations with launching Succession plans and Leadership Development programs. I have even worked with Wives of clients who needed to learn how socialize in formal settings. It has been wonderful.

What are some of the challenges you have faced in this field?

Initially the challenge was to establish credibility to work with people who were much older in age. Another challenge was to work with men being a woman. I must admit though that it has not been difficult. I feel fortunate about it.

What is one foundational concept you can share about making positive, bold life changes for the better?

One of the most important elements about making positive bold changes in life is to acknowledge that something needs to change. If you cannot accept there is a problem, change will not materialize.

How important are personal core values and how does knowing them change one’s behavior?

It is always good to know what your ‘non-negotiable’ elements in life are. The personal value system is a component of this. You want to be able to go to sleep knowing you are doing your best, without compromising on key principles that are important for you.

While I say this it is also important to realize the difference between a core personal value and a deep-rooted loyalty to a value that is not serving you well.

Do you have any advice for someone who is contemplating getting advice from an Executive coach but is unsure of the benefits they’ll get?

There are mostly two kinds of people who land in this space. One who is there for a crisis that they may need help resolving.

The other who wants to develop the muscle to eventually solve their own problems and be independent. The latter is a longer-term commitment. If you feel you want someone to solve it, you may not benefit long term. If you are willing to do the work, you will see results.

Where did you choose to go and why?

We went to Mexico City, Cancún and Tulum.However Mexico’s Boho Beach Spot Tulum, was our favourite part of the trip.

The entire beach strip has great bars and restaurants.

The food at Tulum is excellent; I highly recommend trying Hartwood & Casa Jaguar for dinner. Gitano is a great bar with good food and music. Safari is perfect for a quick bite.

Who did you travel with?

My husband Taimur and our friends.

Tell us about sites no one should miss out on?

Mayan Civilization Ruins, Pablo Escobar’s Home, Cenotes (Fresh Water Caves), Downtown Tulum & strolling along the Tulum Beach Strip.

Where did you stay?

In Tulum we stayed at a Villa at Anah Suites. It was in the middle of the Mayan Jungle. It had its own private beach, golf course, spa & resort. However we spent most of our time at the Tulum beach strip.

Suggest places for a perfect night out?

If you are downtown, then Pasito Tun Tun & Batey are great places for a night out. I would recommend walking

down the Tulum Beach Strip at night. As in the evenings everything is beautifully illuminated by fire and candles. Walking down the street feels like an enchanting experience.

don’t work very well in Tulum so it’s best to look up addresses and save locations from before. The vibe in Tulum is bohemian and laid-back. Try not to rush through the experience, turn your phone and mind off and enjoy!

Most places in Tulum only accept cash.

There are ATM’s everywhere but it’s best to convert and keep extra cash prior to the trip. Internet & phone connections

What can you do over there to relax and unwind?

Around 10 am, the hotels cabanas and day beds are set up on the beach.

Posada Margherita & Nomade were my favourite spots for lazing on the beach and food is excellent too. There are massage beds and spas all over the beach strip. The perfect way to unwind is to get yourself a cup of chai from the chai bar and lie in a hammock with a book.

Or walk into a free yoga class. Another way to relax and explore is to rent a bicycle and ride around town.
