the challenge is set. can you cross scotland in a weekend?

www.scotlandcoasttocoast.com

All of our locations have been hand selected for the quality of their running routes and accessibility for runners. They provide stunning backdrops in which to enjoy a couple of hours or maybe even a whole weekend, with friends and family of simply solo. These are not muddy romps or gruelling crosscountry runs. They’re flat, fast, smooth courses designed to provide the perfect stepping stone from road to trail.

As well as the great venues and unique challenges on offer, your entry fee provides a Rat Race ‘Notorious’ tech tee, medal, chip timing, parking, post race party and camping* as standard. Like every event from the Rat Race, it’s not your normal nine to five.

The CXNE Cyclo-cross series is a series of fifteen races across the North East through the cyclo-cross season from September through to January, Where practical the courses will use a mix of grass fields, compacted tracks, tarmac, and even sand if it is available. The racing is short and sharp and tests the riders endurance, speed and bike handling skills. In addition it helps keep a racing cyclist “topped up” through the winter season as the sessions are hard for up to and hour and would not be possible under training conditions. The series is based around the International and National formats of fast and technical courses, the courses avoid narrow single track and prolonged running (un-rideable) sections. The technical aspects involve off camber sections, sharp turns and not more than one set of hurdles where the riders must dismount. The league has arranged for chip timing to be at each event which records all the data about the race, the lap times, and importantly the results are available as soon as the last rider crosses the line. Road Racer, Criterium Racer? Why do Cyclo-cross? If you are a road or crit racer there are huge benefits of doing cyclo-cross in the winter. Cyclocross is an hour of fast and furious racing, it tests a riders bike handling skills as well as pushing the rider into the red zone a number times per lap. This intense effort is a good counterbalance to doing long steady rides building base endurance and much more fun than turbo trainer or roller sessions.

It is also a safe environment to get used to riding in very close proximity as falling into mud is much less painful than tarmac, and the lower speeds means that pile ups tend to be avoided. You don’t need fancy kit for cyclo-cross, if you have a mountain bike, then try on that before committing to a cross bike. Most cross bikes come in under the magic £1000 for the cycle to work schemes and can double up as good commuting bikes. Mountain Biker? The benefits of Cyclocross If you are a keen mountain biker who does 24 hour endurance rides such as the Mayhem or Sleepless then cyclo-cross might just be the training you need in winter to keep that edge. Cyclo-cross racing is over mixed terrain and often contains steep banks which are a challenge either up or down. The race format of a number of laps around a course for an hour gives the racer a good workout and builds anaerobic tolerance. There are a number of races in the season which are reasonably spread out, so they will help keep variety in the winter training program.
