Virginia War Memorial home to thousands of heroic stories By Susan N. Garling Fort Lee Public Affairs Specialist

About

 12,000

 names

 are

inscribed on the stone walls of the Virginia War Memorial. They

are

sons,

fathers,

daughters,

mothers,

friends

and

battle

buddies. They are fallen comrades and persons of honor. And they are heroes – every last one of them. The memorial is a place to reflect

on

the

proud

heritage

of

our

 nation’s

fighting

forces

and

what

it means to accept the responsibility of wearing a U.S. military uniform. As members of the Army Family,

 we

 should

 feel

 an

 obligation

to visit such places of honor and show our respect for those Virginians who forged the path of freedom before us. Because of its location near the downtown Richmond business

 district,

 a

 visit

 to

 the

memorial could easily be combined with a weekend outing that includes other sites in the city or the

 many

 parks,

 museums

 and

entertainment venues nearby. The site is located at 621 S. Belvidere St. and its hours of operation

 are

Sunday. The Shrine of Memory is open 5 a.m. - midnight every day. Jeb

 Hockman,

 director

 of

Marketing and Communications with the Virginia War Memorial

 Education

 Foundation,

 discussed

 the

significance

of

the

 site,

 noting

 that

 “the

 best

 way

to honor our fallen military heroes is to carry their stories forward.” “The memorial preserves military

 history,”

 he

 said.

 “It

 serves

as a venue to educate our youth and inspire patriotism throughout our community. It’s important that we not forget this aspect of

America’s

independence.” To

 emphasize

 that

 point,

 a

 23-foot-tall white marble statue called

 “Memory”

 stands

 at

 the

southern end of the shrine. At

its

base

is

an

eternal

flame

–

the

 “Torch

 –

 that

represents everlasting patriotism. The most recent addition to the memorial

 is

 the

 which opened in September 2010.

 The

 18,000-square-foot

 facility

 includes

 library,

 theaters,

 a

amphitheater and a memorial store. Among the popular programs at the facility is the award-winning

 “Virginia

 series,

according to Hockman. Incorporating thousands of one-on-one videotaped interviews with military

veterans,

the

program

provides a truthful and emotional look at the impact of war – how it

affected

those

who

served,

the

sacrifices

 that

 were

 made,

 and

 the

loss

of

battle

buddies,

comrades and friends. “This series is sent for free to local schools to educate our children on America’s history from a

 personal

 perspective,”

 Hockman

 said,

 “We’ve

 got

 thousands

 of

stories.

It’s

very

captivating.” Refocusing on the memorial itself,

 Hockman

 said

 his

organization is very appreciative of its relationship with Fort Lee and always welcomes the participation of the military community at its many annual events. “Having military members from the post take part in our programs during the year is something that brings our community together. Having that blend of active duty and veterans standing together

... those moments are often very special

and

moving.” Hockman highlighted other special activities that may be of interest to visitors. They include the following: •

Army unveils ‘Gold Star’ PSA honoring survivors of fallen The Army announced Wednesday that it will release three public service announcements over the next year to increase awareness of DOD-issued Gold Star and next-of-kin lapel pins. Fox Sports aired the first

PSA

yesterday,

in

the

half-hour before kickoff of Super Bowl XLVIII. The pins are designed to signify the loss of a loved one in support of the nation. Although the Gold Star pins have been in existence

 for

 decades,

 many

Americans are unfamiliar with their meaning. The PSAs

 were

 developed

 to

 help educate and inform the

 public

 of

 the

significance of the pins. “It’s heartbreaking to think that a mom wearing a Gold Star might have someone

 ask

 her,

 ‘What

 a

 beautiful

 pin,

 where

 do

 I

 get

 one?’,”

 said

 Donna

 Engeman,

a

Gold

Star

wife

who manages the Survivor Outreach Services program for the Army.

“We decided we had to do something to ensure the nation -- the world -recognizes what that pin really

 signifies,”

 Engeman

said. Though the Gold Star and next-of-kin lapel pins are a Department of Defense

program,

the

Army’s

Installation Management Command has taken on the mission of educating the

 public.

 This

 year,

 Gen.

 Ray

 Odierno,

 chief

 of

 staff

 of

the

Army,

directed

IMCOM to develop a campaign to inform America of

 the

 significance

 of

 this

symbolic Gold Star pin. “We’re committed to our

 survivors,”

 said

 Lt.

 Gen.

 Mike

 Ferriter,

IMCOM commander. “We owe it to them to ensure they get the support and service they deserve for as long as they need it. Educating the public on the meaning behind the Gold Star pins is simply another way

to

reaffirm

to

our

survivors that we understand and

 honor

 the

 sacrifices

they’ve made for our country.” The

PSAs

consist

of

documentary-style interviews and narrative stories from real survivors who volunteered to be a part of the project. The voice-overs were provided by Academy-award-nominated actor Gary Sinise. “We tried to ensure the PSAs

 reflected

 the

 diversity

 of

 surviving

 families,

as well as honoring their service

 and

 sacrifice,”

 said

 Hal

 Snyder,

 chief

 of

IMCOM’s Wounded and Fallen Support Services office.

 “The

 PSAs

 include

 moms

 and

 dads,

 brothers

 and

sisters,

children,

husbands,

wives.” “The point is you might see a Gold Star pin on just about

 anyone,”

 Snyder

 continued,

 “and

 we

wanted to make sure everyone knows what that pin represents.”

 The

 PSAs

 also

serve to gently remind the American public that the freedom they enjoy comes at

a

cost,

Snyder

said.

“The call to action is to

 honor

 and

 learn,”

 he

 explained. “Honor those who

have

fallen,

and

learn

 about

 a

 small,

 but

meaningful symbol presented to families who have lost a service

member.”

The Army also plans an extensive outreach effort through social media and partnerships with corporate America. “The more people who see

 these,

 the

 greater

 the

 opportunity to recognize

and honor families of the fallen,”

Snyder

said. The Army’s Survivor Outreach Services program currently supports more

 than

 55,900

 surviving military family members.

Be Mindful Of Motorcycles

An average of three lives a day could be saved, experts estimate, if motorists and motorcyclists were more careful at intersections. In fact, crash data reveals that motorcycle crashes happen more often at intersections than anywhere else, relative to the amount of time riders spend in them. To help, one major insurance company is putting up caution signs on roads all over the country. Bankers visit state capital

Pictured from left to right are Earl Allen, Delegate Roslyn Tyler, Jane Wagner and Daerick Wilkerson. The Bank of McKenney Associates visited Delegate Roslyn Tyler on Virginia Bankers Day at the General Assembly. Hundreds of bankers from across the Commonwealth visits state legislators during session to discuss legislation that would affect the banking industry. Every year in January, Virginia bankers gather on Capitol Hill to meet with their delegates and senators. The meetings on Banker Day provide the bankers with an opportunity to discuss upcoming legislation that may impact the banking industry and an opportunity for the legislators to ask questions of the bankers. The bankers continue to be advocates of financial literacy and consumer education.
