Family Physician of the Year

FAMILY PHYSICIAN OF THE YEAR WILLIAM TADDONIO, MD SPOKE WITH KEYSTONE PHYSICIAN ABOUT WHY FAMILY MEDICINE IS SO UNIQUE AND HOW HE FEELS ABOUT HIS PATIENTS. hen people ask me that question, it’s funny because when I graduated from high school, my guidance counselor, when he signed my yearbook, he actually wrote in my yearbook “I hope to hear in four years your acceptance into medical school. My desire to go to medical school to be a doctor – it goes back so long, it’s what I always wanted to do, despite the fact that there were no doctors in the family. My older brother went on to become a family doctor, and he certainly was an inspiration, but it wasn’t the main reason why I wanted to do it. I always wanted to be that kind of family doc. There are a number of things that are so unique to family medicine that you just don’t see I think in other specialties. Several of them that set us apart: you really become a part of the patient’s life. You become a part of their family. You develop friendships, caring friendships, 28

over that time. You definitely have an impact and empower patients to take care of themselves and live healthier lives by being a part of them and practicing family practice, preventive medicine, caring for chronic illness. You make a difference in the patient’s quality of life. Those are the kinds of things that make it different from other specialties because of the fact that you really, truly become a part of their lives and their family’s lives. You see multiple generations over time, you watch kids grow, you watch patients get older, you’re there for them when they get ill, you’re part of the family when a member dies. You just don’t see that in other specialties. I don’t do as much newborns anymore, but I continue to take care of children, I continue to take care of adolescents, young adults, adults, and also geriatrics. I’ve kind of gravitated over
