or God did not give us a Spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control. – 2 TIMOTHY 1:7 Dear Friends of Padua,

T

his 2012–2013 Annual Report is a testament to the spirit and pride, determination and hard work, and unwavering commitment to excellence of our faculty, staff, students, parents, alumnae, trustees, grandparents and friends. Together we are a Padua family; together we fulfill the Christ-centered mission of our school: to inspire young women to grow in faith, explore their academic potential, lead with confidence, and help those in need. Because of each of you, Padua has accomplished amazing things. Thank You! Attempting to quantify our success is easy on one hand, but that only tells half of the story. We can point with great pride to the many achievements of our students, including the 134 accomplished young women comprising the Class of 2013 that amassed over $13.2 million in collegiate scholarships. What these statistics do not tell you is how your support helped our school educate young women who are strong citizens, deeply committed to personal responsibility, concerned for the care of the poor, and proud volunteers in the Church and in the community. Padua students are globally aware and locally focused in their efforts to be who they are and to be that well. Enclosed among the hundreds of donors and supporters to Padua you will also learn about the renovation of the library and guidance departments. This transformation into a 21st Century Learning Commons and College Advisement & Guidance Center is as profound in its appear-

ance as it will be in its daily application for our students. It was the completion of a vision that I was able to share with and discuss with Fr. Roberto Balducelli nearly two and a half years before his passing. I will never forget him leaning back in his chair, as we discussed the plans, and he said to me, “Cindy, I love it . . . It’s beautiful.” I couldn’t imagine a more beautiful life to celebrate and remember as we enter into another school year. I extend my sincere appreciation for the gifts of your prayers, talents, time and your contributions to strengthen Padua’s ability to serve our students and to help develop young wom-

en of integrity and purpose. Padua will have a significant impact on the life and growth of these young women. I know from meeting and talking to many Padua alumnae that when our students walk down the aisle at St. Anthony’s Church at graduation they are prepared to make a profound impact on our world. Your gifts and support make this happen! This report is dedicated to our benefactors who have given selflessly in support of the rising generation of women leaders. With deepest gratitude, I thank each and every one of you and ask that you always keep Padua in your prayers. With Faith and Appreciation,

I extend my sincere appreciation for the gifts of your prayers, talents, time and your contributions to strengthen Padua’s ability to serve our students and to help develop young women of integrity and purpose.

“A SCHOOL WITH A SOUL”: Remembering the Life and Legacy of Fr. Roberto Balducelli

O

n August 9, 2013 the students, faculty, staff, alumnae, and friends of Padua Academy lost the visionary founder of their beloved school, Father Roberto Balducelli. His influence spanned many generations, and his spirit continues to inspire those looking to follow God’s word. Fr. Robert, as he was affectionately called by those closest to him, was more than a parish priest, a theologian, an artist, a pastor, a builder, an immigrant, or a friend, he was a saint that lived and worked among us. He was a servant of God, filled with an unwavering faith to improve the lives of families, communities, and perhaps most importantly, the rising generation of women leaders via his greatest achievement: Padua Academy.

Fr. Robert knew from an early age, growing up in Northern Italy, that he was called to the priesthood. The Gospel called him to the paradoxes of the universe and the beautiful mysteries of faith. For it is within those paradoxes and those sacred mysteries that we see the intersection of faith and reason. Fr. Robert knew that one of the ways to glorify God is by building Holy and Sacred places with the best of one’s talents and energies. They should always be beautiful, and they should always reflect the reverence and glory of Christ. That vision, a vision as broad and as deep as some of the saints before him, was as revolutionary as any change agent in our lifetime. Fr. Robert was a true renaissance man. The desire to build a high school for Padua Academy really was born out of a felt need of the community. The girls of St. Anthony of Padua Grade School had no place to matriculate to.

Fr. Robert, as he was affectionately called by those closest to him, was more than a parish priest, a theologian, an artist, a pastor, a builder, an immigrant, or a friend, he was a saint that lived and worked among us.

Head of School Report 2 0 1 2 – 2 0 1 3

Would their Christ-centered academic formation end at the eighth grade? Not if Fr. Robert had any say in the matter. The stories of how Fr. Robert convinced the Bishop and the community of St. Anthony’s Parish that he would build Padua Academy with literally no money is now legend. In his eyes, if it was God’s will, then God’s will be done. What Fr. Robert found along the way was not only hundreds and thousands of volunteer hours and supplies donated, but also an untapped desire by a community of believers to undertake a project larger than themselves. This desire was rooted in the rich Italian heritage already established in Wilmington, Delaware. The bond of that community found the family at the center: and everything else in some way supported and nurtured that family to grow and deepen the already strong cultural and spiritual bonds that are the hallmark of our civil society. It took seven years, a lot of blood, sweat, and toil—much of it shouldered by Brother Michael Rosenello, another Oblate of St. Francis de Sales—to build what would become, “A School With a Soul.” One can’t help but think that Fr. Robert’s many travels around the word and his mind, steeped in great books and the Gospel, helped ignite an imagination that would build a school as remarkable as Padua Academy. You can walk through Padua thousands of times and still see subtle characteristics of the terrazzo tiles or marble encasements or religious stories inlayed in the floor that speak this divine creativity. Padua was built to celebrate the resurrected Jesus, and in so doing, educating young women to find themselves while in service, mission, and humility to others. Today, Padua Academy is hitting her stride. Recently ranked as one of America’s Top-50 Catholic High Schools, Padua is a leading example for other institutions looking to celebrate the Gospel of Christ in our modern age. Classrooms at Padua are filled with bright students, an award winning faculty, and classes in science, math, and technology that prepare Padua graduates for the challenges of college and the ever-changing dynamics of global leadership. The legacy of Fr. Roberto Balducelli will forever live in many hearts and minds, and many places that he touched, perhaps none though as important or sacred as Padua Academy.

RENOVATIONS FUEL COLLEGIATE ASPIRATIONS: 21st Century Learning Commons and College Guidance Center Completed

S

ummers are usually fairly quiet at Padua Academy absent those working hard to clean the school and the occasional sports camp, but this summer was unlike any other in recent memory. With the generous support of the Longwood Foundation, Welfare Foundation, and private donors, Padua undertook an 11,300 square foot renovation of the library and guidance areas. “Our goal was to provide a state-of-the art and collegiate inspired Learning Commons area while expanding our College Guidance & Advisement department to reduce the student to counselor ratio and provide greater access to America’s top universities,” noted Cindy Hayes Mann, Head of School. The demolition began in earnest at the end of the 2012–13 school year, in early June, and needed to be completed for the start of school in mid-August. Cindy Hayes Mann stated at the end of the summer, “I knew that EDiS Construction Management Solutions would be under a tight deadline, but they did an amazing job working with our school and all the subcontractors to get the job done on time.” The upper balcony of the library was expanded to include a new guidance and college advisement suite consisting of four offices, a conference room and a reception area. These areas also provide wired and wireless data access points, a large panel LED screen in the conference room for college presentations and global student interaction. The lower level of the library added a resource room for student testing and mentoring and a new office for the Academic Dean. The former guidance offices, located on the first floor, were converted into a state-of-the-art graphic design center. Two classrooms adjacent to the lab were renovated and updated to meet or exceed current standards. Also included in the renovations were the main corridors outside the library and guidance offices. The facelift included brighter more energy efficient lights,

Head of School Report 2 0 1 2 – 2 0 1 3

custom millwork panels for the wall and a fresh paint scheme that blends with the palate of the new library and guidance center. The learning commons will be named in memory of Robert Potter while the graphic design center will be dedicated to Sister Ann Michele Zwosta. The newly renovated guidance program has allowed Padua to add an additional guidance counselor as well as an Academic Dean to meet the challenges of a bourgeoning student body. This enhancement has already adjusted the counselor to student ratio from 200:1 to 150:1. The expanded counselor space will increase, by fifty percent, the accessibility students will have to university recruiters and will extended the visits to all grade levels. It will also free up valuable counselor time currently directed to various educational accommodations, and will allow counselors to readily administer therapeutic interventions. Additionally, this newly expanded space will allow greater access for faculty counseling and will increase parent-teacher conferences by twenty percent. Most importantly, all of the improvements are student focused, aimed at providing the safest and most effective environment for students to learn, dream, and find God’s calling in their lives.

With the generous support of the Longwood Foundation, Welfare Foundation, and private donors, Padua undertook an 11,300 square foot renovation.

Parent Appreciation Dear Friends,

A

s parents of four daughters who have graduated from Padua Academy, we are always struck by how Padua forms young women by helping them discover and optimize their own God-given talents. Padua has always fostered a diversity of interests, whether art, science, literature, service, languages, or spirituality. Whatever a student’s niche happens to be, she can find it and develop it at Padua. There is a sense of genuine care and mission to educate in a Christ-centered way that flows from the Head-of-School right through to the faculty, staff, and students. Your generous support and trust in Padua has helped make us one of the top 50 Catholic high schools in the nation. Thank you! As parent chairs of the 2012–2013 annual fund, it was our goal to educate and encourage as many parents as possible to participate in the fund campaign. The annual fund is the bedrock of Padua’s fundraising efforts and allows us to provide for the transformational elements that tuition alone cannot cover. Challenged with a goal to increase our fund total by twentyfive percent over the previous year, we knew we had a tall order ahead of us. We are very pleased to report that the Annual Fund Campaign garnered over $204,000 in total gifts. This represents a thirty percent increase over the previous fiscal year! Donations from current parents were also up reaching nearly seventy percent parent participation. At a time when every dollar counts, and every gift carries a little more purpose, we want to thank you for your generosity and commitment to Padua Academy. Witnessing the last graduation of our daughters from Padua this past May, we were reminded of the thousands of students who have been formed by this, “school with a soul” as Fr. Roberto Balducelli called Padua. As most of you undoubtedly know, our beloved Fr. Roberto recently passed from this life, just as the clock was ticking down to his 100th birthday. He was one of the most powerful and wonderful spiritual forces we have ever had the privilege to encounter and Padua stands as one of the greatest accomplishments of a priest with an unparalleled legacy. In fact, it was Fr. Roberto’s faith in our community and in the rising generation of women leaders that has not only sustained Padua but has made her one of the most desirable Catholic schools in the region. Together, you have helped us to build a culture of philanthropy that will support the dreams and aspirations of all Padua students. We look forward to working with Matthew and Delores Ballintyn as they assume the role as parent chairs and work with all of you to continue our positive momentum of growth. Gratefully in Christ ,

David and Anita Juliano 2012–13 Padua Parent Annual Fund Chairs

Memorial

G I FTS

Tribute and memorial gifts may be made to Padua Academy at any time. Much like a Mass Card, a gift may be in memory of a deceased loved one or in honor of a special person or occasion. Gifts made to the Annual Fund support the academic, spiritual, and co-curricular programs benefitting our young women. Gifts may also be contributed to our Scholarship Endowment Fund, which provides tuition assistance for young women to attend Padua Academy. Depending upon the wishes of the family and the value of the gifts, a named and endowed fund can be established. With the approval of the Administration and Board of Trustees, a fund can be established to support a special, one-time project or program. Please contact the Office of Advancement at (302) 421-2778 or advancement@paduaacademy.org to create a special memorial for a loved one today.

Padua’s annual Fashion Show showcases the latest in youth clothing modeled by students, faculty and their children. Hundreds of parents, grandparents, alum’s, friends, and supporters of Padua fill the cafeteria as it is transformed into a modern fashion runway. Guests are also treated to various catered food offerings as well as a large silent auction and raffle. We are grateful to all those who support this fall fundraiser and community builder. All proceeds benefit the annual fund and its work to provide a transformational education for every student.
