India-made flexible packaging machines of global standard are here! The flexible packaging industry is evolving at a brisk pace with the advent of new technology as was on display at the mega biennial Plastindia exhibition held last month in Gandhinagar. Like its earlier editions, the 10th edition was a resounding success with a large international contingent. The show attracted 1,800 exhibitors from 44 countries, and around 2.46-lakh visitors, according to the organizers. The show was on one hand a dazzling array of live demos showcasing cutting edge innovations and packaging solutions, and a launching pad for many budding as well as established flexible packaging equipment manufacturers from India on the other. And these launches were no mere launches but flawless execution of technology imported from global leaders or with the aid of experts in the related field. These new generation, Indian-made machines, which come with all bells and whistles that any top-end European or Western players provide, will definitely empower the Indian converters and packaging solution providers to deliver same efficiency and productivity with new standard in cost effectiveness. At the event, Pelican introduced India-made rotogravure press under Cerutti technology, which means Pelican signed a strategic agreement with Cerutti to manufacture Cerutti’s rotogravure press in India. Under the terms of the agreement, Pelican will use Cerutti’s manufacturing technology and designs to produce rotogravure presses in India. Similarly, Uflex launched its fully automatic co-extrusion lamination machine at the Plastindia event. Uflex has roped in Uwe Fidersek, who has over 40 years of hands-on experience with one of the best extrusion lamination machine manufacturing companies of the world, to provide his expertise in manufacturing state-of-the-art extrusion lamination machines to be sold in India and world over in the times to come. The Plastindia exhibition is a perfect example of how equipment manufacturing in the country has evolved, but still it is only a microcosm of what is happening in the flexible packaging market, as there are many other high-voltage events happening across the country. Cosmo Films, for example, plans to start a new PET line in Aurangabad in Maharashtra next year. According to Pankaj Poddar of Cosmo Films, the expansion plan for next two years is in the Rs 325–375 crore range. Then there is Constantia Flexibles investing a double-digit million euro amount to expand the production capacity at its Indian subsidiary Parikh Packaging in Ahmedabad. Roorkee-based Osho Flexibles has installed Manugraph’s first CI flexo press – CyberFlex 1708-850 recently. Here again, Manugraph has entered into a strategic alliance with Italy-based CI flexo press manufacturer Carraro to commence the manufacturing of high-end CI flexo presses in India at Manugraph’s Kolhapur facility. The flexible packaging industry has also been witnessing new players entering the market. One such entrant is Noida-based Naph Graphics. Although the company diversified to the field of manufacturing slitter-rewinders not long ago, yet it has carved a niche in the market in a remarkably short span of time. Naph is leveraging its more than two decades of engineering, manufacturing and after-sales expertise to crack the market. Flexible packaging features heavily in this edition of The Packman. z INNOVATION IN HOLOGRAPHIC FILMS New holography keeps packaging fresh


echnological advances push holograms forward for packaging applications, says Manoj Kochar, chair of the International Hologram Manufacturers Association, who looks at the latest eye-catching – and award-winning – developments.

End-user demand and the search for ever more interesting packaging concepts and design show holography continues to prove itself to be an extremely versatile and flexible technology. It lends itself to integration with various substrates and print and conversion technologies, thus creating new products and applications. There is now a new generation of optical structures in development with distinct visual effects that will make it easy to identify, and even more difficult to simulate, while new techniques in film coating and manufacturing technology are seeing the boundaries for the use of holographic materials being pushed further and further: a wide variety of specialist origination techniques offer an almost infinite variety of colorful 3D visual effects, ranging from the bright and stunning, to subtle graphic features and tones. The brightness, vivacity and luster of the hologram makes it a very eye-catching packaging accouterments. Indeed, various surveys have established that the technology grabs the attention of the consumer browsing along shelves in a store or supermarket. This is the one single property that all brand owners look for in their packaging – maximum brand appeal. Holograms also impart a premium look to the package, which is why more and more companies are using holographic films and foils in their packaging. Toothpastes, premium cosmetics and personal care products are among the big users of holographic elements in their packaging. In this application, the security that is naturally provided by a hologram is of peripheral benefit as any custom designed holographic pattern offers the option of including security features to make the package secure against counterfeiting. for a wide variety of flexible eye-catching applications, further increasing the creative visual opportunities for packaging and print designers to reinforce brand identities, catch the customer’s eye and reinvigorate mature or aging designs. Indeed, holography’s constant capacity to refresh and reinvigorate brands continues, highlighted by the recent holography industry awards – the Excellence in Holography Awards 2017 – where imaginative solutions reinforcing the important role the technology plays, particularly in tackling product anti-counterfeiting and authentication were to the fore. An eye-catching design for an annual calendar and supporting materials won the Best Applied Decorative/Packaging Product. The Hazen 2017 calendar and supporting six panel brochure and folder, features rich, graceful and elegant printed patterns, pearlescent and metallic coatings that glisten on the surface of paper. The proprietary imaging processes used by Hazen, produce papers than can be optimized and customized by in-house designers to produce 3-dimensional and truly holographic shapes and complex artistic designs.

And of course, where holography delivers eye-catching design to packaging, it also adds value as a highly effective and tamper resistant security feature. For example, the advanced optical security element DID Graphic Wave from Surys, which is easy to identify with the naked eye, has been showcased for its role as a next generation visual security design, visually disruptive from traditional holograms. The technology reproduces a design with two diffractive colors, visible at a direct reflection angle. When the image is 90° rotated on a horizontal plane, there is a tint permutation between two colors: its recognition is extremely easy and very ergonomic. Magnum from Holostik is a secure yet eyecatching hologram that incorporates a portfolio optical of features including: full visible dynamic effects, emboss effects producing depth, kinetic effect, a Fresnel effects, 2D/3D effects, 3D text, a gradient effect, animated flower and text, and an animated covert laser readable effect together with many other features. New imaging techniques and combinations of other overt authentication technologies with holograms are producing advanced optical security devices which combine ease of recognition benefits with significantly enhanced resistance to counterfeits, enabling products to be controlled through an expanded system solution involving security authentication features, tracking mechanisms and investigative services. So, it remains appropriate that as the hologram marks more than 70 years since its invention, the technology remains as pertinent as ever, continuing to go from strength-to-strength as an effective packaging device, demonstrating the highest standards of visual appeal, quality, creativity and technical ambition. And, with the seemingly remorseless march of technology, there’s no reason why it will not continue to evolve as packaging designers and developers continue to see the benefits unfold before their eyes and remain comfortable with a technology that has a lot to offer. z

hilp Gravures, one of Asia’s largest gravure cylinder makers, has become the first company in India to install the Kodak Flexcel NX Wide 50 x 80 system. The investment in Kodak’s Flexcel NX technology underpins Shilp Gravures’ strategy and confidence in the system to help grow its flexography business.

Explaining how the company chose to invest in their new flexo plate-making setup, Gajanan Bhavsar, marketing director at Shilp Gravures, said, “The market and our customers demand higher levels of productivity and improved output. There is a realization that flexo quality today rivals gravure, while also reducing the number of colors on press. With the Flexcel NX system and plates, Kodak has better technology on offer and also the capability of imaging a 50 x 80 flexo plate – a first for India, that enables us to efficiently make large-format plates. With this, we can also cater to the demands of corrugation industry. We have observed smoother vignettes and better solid ink density with Kodak’s NX digital flexo plates, meaning we can use higher screens and really bump up quality. Add to this enhanced ink transfer capacity and higher resolution with flat top dots, and we get a quality plate that allows for fine image reproduction that delivers superior output with today’s new, high-tech CI and label presses.” Flexography, especially with Kodak’s Flexcel NX technology, has made a tremendous footprint in labels and tags and now has lived up to the expectations of flexible packaging gravure converters too. Gradually, flexography is becoming their first choice as every gravure converter is investing in a CI press. This is following a trend earlier witnessed in Europe and the US, where the number of flexography presses now rival that of gravure presses. “In the flexible converting space, the West of India has been a sort of ‘Silicon Valley’ as more and more wide-web CI flexo presses are installed. GK, a global brand development, activation and brand deployment company, has signed an agreement with Hybrid Software to license its PackZ native PDF editor for use in all SGK facilities worldwide. This agreement was reached after an extensive pilot program in multiple facilities in the US, Europe and Asia. PackZ is a powerful object-based native PDF artwork editor for packaging, with sophisticated color handling, intelligent objects, trapping, warping, and stepping capabilities. It can also import and export native Adobe Illustrator files for SGK to exchange with designers, brand customers and print providers. SGK plans to install 425 PackZ licenses at their production facilities in North and South America, Europe, and Asia Pacific. -Rite, a global leader in color science and technology, and its subsidiary Pantone, along with MediaBeacon, Esko and AVT released a new white paper, The Digital Maturity Model for Brand Packaging, highlighting the levels of digitization within the brand packaging process. Consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies experience continued pressure to produce new and more products quickly. This forces them to assess the current capacity and capabilities of their consumer packaging processes, including packaging workflow, color management, digital printing and coding. Senior leadership at many CPGs are adopting digital technologies and implementing digital automation to cultivate packaging as a core business capability.




“Brands understand the benefits of streamlining processes in order to increase speed to market for their products,” says Cindy Cooperman, global director, brand and Packaging at X-Rite. “Our digital maturity model allows CPG brands to identify their current capability level in developing packaging. It’s also a valuable framework for defining the future strategies, processes, and digital tools required to more effectively address color requirements, drive revenue and improve operational efficiencies across the packaging value chain.” The Digital Maturity Model for Brand Packaging defines five levels of maturity: Reactive, Organized, Digitized, Connected, and Intelligent. In the white paper, each of the five stages is clearly described, as well as 14 dimensions that

comprise the maturity levels. For each level, there are descriptions of what motivates a business to level-up their capabilities. z

ccording to a report published by Euromonitor, titled Global Packaging Trends 2017 – Global Growth Markets for Packaging, shaped liquid cartons will see the highest CAGR of 12.5% during 2015-2020, driven by growth in plain yogurts in key markets. Dairy products in China will lead the growth in brick liquid cartons, with slim 250 ml cartons gaining popularity. Flexible plastics remain the dominant packaging format in India as well, followed by flexible paper and PET bottles. The flexible plastics segment is forecast to see CAGR during 2015-2020 of 9.1% while PET bottles will register a CAGR of over 15%. Flexible paper segment will grow by a CAGR of 7.1% during 2015-2020. Greater awareness about health and wellness, environmental issues and overall macroeconomic factors are the three key trends that will affect not only the Indian market but the global packaging market in the coming year, according to the report. Here are some of the ongoing packaging trends in India: THE USE OF METAL TINS DECLINES IN BABY FOOD AS FOLDING CARTONS COME TO THE FORE The importance of folding cartons continues to rise in baby food. While the main advantage of folding cartons is affordability, this type also offers large surface areas for the printing of attractive images and the listing of product information. Baby food packaging continues to see sales growth driven by affordable flexible plastic and folding cartons. According to the global report, these pack types saw 6% retail unit volume growth each in 2016, with flexible plastic accounting for 49% of overall units in the year and flexible plastic accounting for 45% share. These pack types are popular due to their low cost in terms of production and distribution, which enables players to keep prices to a minimum and thus attract India’s price-sensitive consumers.




DYNAMIC GROWTH FOR LIQUID CARTONS AND METAL BEVERAGE CANS IN SOFT DRINKS Aseptic liquid cartons was the most dynamic pack type in soft drinks in 2017 due to its dominance in juice, with shaped liquid cartons recording particularly strong growth. Liquid cartons offer numerous advantages such as being light, biodegradable and distinctive on retail shelves, making them increasingly popular. In a recent interview with The Packman, Ashwani Kumar Sharma, president and CEO, new business initiatives, Uflex Limited, said, “The Indian aseptic market is growing in excess of 15% per annum. This is a very promising growth. In the next 5 to 6 years, the market will double up in all likelihoods. The industry is up for great and exciting times ahead.” The Indian aseptic liquid packaging market is expected to double up in the next five years to approximately 20 billion packs per annum. Drawing parallels, China boasts of a tremendous growth story which has already reached approximately 80 billion packs. In India, with similar population, the growth potential is huge. According to industry experts, the aseptic liquid packaging market in India easily has a scope to accommodate 3 to 4 players. Till recently, the Indian market was being catered by one player. With the entry of Uflex’ s Asepto, the Indian market is clearly moving from monopoly to oligopoly.

Earlier during its review period, Euromonitor noticed that SAB Miller launched several of its beer brands in 1,000 ml PET bottles. The company’s experience in the use of large PET bottles in Eastern European countries led to the brands Haywards, Knockout and Fosters being bottled in 1,000 ml PET bottles at its plant in Maharashtra. Another trend seen in the alcobev segment, according to the report, is the premiumization strategies by leading players. Rising levels of taxation, the increasing cost of molasses and ethanol, and changes to the regulations relating to packaging have all fueled increasing unit prices across the alcoholic drinks industry. As a result, the leading players in alcoholic drinks have been forced into premiumization strategies in an effort to protect their margins and justify their passing of rising costs on to end consumers.

CONVENIENCE SPURS THE PERFORMANCE OF BEAUTY AND PERSONAL CARE PACKAGING The usage of beauty and personal care products is rising among affluent urban consumers, with sun care, facial moisturizers and facial cleansers among the most dynamic categories. Consumers are increasingly looking for smaller sized products which offer portability and convenience when working or traveling.

LITTLE CHANGE IN HOME CARE PACKAGING AS PLAYERS FOCUS ON OFFERING VALUE INSTEAD According to the Euromonitor report, demand in home care is still based mainly on price and brand positioning, and packaging has not emerged as a key driver of demand in the industry. The only notable trends in home care packaging are thus being driven more by shifts in consumer behavior such as the rising penetration of automatic washing machines, which has led to a shift away from hand wash detergents in flexible packaging towards automatic detergents in folding cartons. z

lobal threats will push demand and see increased integration of holograms alongside other authentication, and track and trace technologies to deliver overt and covert protection in 2018, says the International Hologram Manufacturers Association (IHMA).

This will only strengthen holography’s role in areas such as tax stamp programs in the next 12 months, combating the multi-billion global trade in illicit or counterfeit tobacco and alcohol products. While Europe and North America will continue to offer opportunity, it’s in the hot spots of Asia, where counterfeiting appears systemic, that offers massive commercial potential. IHMA chair Manoj Kochar says, “Countries across Asia, notably India and China, will continue to offer unprecedented scope for growth for holograms in the battle to stem the tide of counterfeit goods flooding onto the market. We will continue to see over the coming months increased integration of holograms in these territories as part of brand protection strategies being adopted by government and security agencies looking to tackle the problem.” This will see the IHMA set to build on its work with the Chinese authorities to address the problems. Such moves will protect those retail brands destined for export markets against the threat of counterfeit criminals and organized crime. “Counterfeiting cannot be defeated in isolation, so collaboration with the likes of the IHMA will be paramount,” adds Kochar. “What we offer in terms of helping to tackle counterfeiting particularly with the use of the Hologram Image Register, has to be a welcome priority. International communication, openmindedness and closer collaboration will be beneficial as we move forward, helping us to tackle and solve this problem together.” This will include added value authentication solutions, as advocated in ISO 12931, to enable examiners to verify the authenticity of a legitimate product, differentiating it from

The arrival of new banknotes in 2018, including the new Armenian series, new notes from Canada and Australia and the new Swiss 200 Franc, will only strengthen holography’s central role as a cutting-edge security device. “Holography will continue to hold up well in comparison with other optical variable features in the currency market, and will endure for the foreseeable future,” says Kochar. “The use of polymer notes is growing and will benefit from holographic security features that will continue to reassure both central banks and the public about currency authenticity. Some of the holographic features in more traditional paper substrates will also continue to push the boundaries of what the technology can now achieve, demonstrating that there is plenty of mileage in holography yet. In addition, 2018 will also herald the Reserve Bank of India’s choice of selected products and providers for holographic security foils on banknotes, with approximate annual volumes of eight billion units.” Holograms for ID, where innovations linked to digital applications, packaging and tax stamps, are all tipped for continued growth. “We have seen holographic features on ID documents grow hugely over the last few years, and there’s now a suite of products that incorporate

‘opto-digital’ functionality,” says Kochar. “Eyecatching holograms add design appeal to brand packaging, so 2018 will see extended success in a sector where companies have to invest in new products or refresh existing brands to meet consumer demand.” The IHMA also predicts more activity for holographic optical elements (HOE) – an exciting area of opportunity for holography. Kochar says, “We will see organizations exploring holography technologies for new wearable head-up displays and other smart devices to enhance people’s lives: While we have seen some fantastic industrial uses of this technology, we are yet to see significant consumer adoption, mainly due to price. Will 2018 be the year that changes this?” With LEDs in use as vehicle rear lights and brake lights, HOEs are being used to enhance the emitted light while they also have an important role in vehicle instrumentation and improving the image on small and large format LCD and OLED displays. The application of holography in solar energy harvesting could also be an area to watch in the coming years as holographic mass production technology gains traction, which will help to decrease the cost of solar panels and improve efficiency. “Display holograms, which are often overlooked and a small sector within the holographic market also possess growth potential, so 2018 could well see activity in this sector starting to gain some traction,” concludes Manoj Kochar. z THE PACKMAN | MAR-APR 2018





Uflex launches fully automatic co-extrusion laminator at Plastindia 2018 MAHAN HAZARIKA


n December 2017, the engineering business of Uflex demonstrated its semiautomatic co-extrusion lamination machine at an Open House at its premises in Noida. Almost two months later at Plastindia 2018, it launched its fully automatic co-extrusion lamination machine. “While the semi-automatic co-extrusion lamination machine displayed at the Open House had speeds up to 250 meters/minute, the fully automatic machine runs at speeds up to 300 meters/minute. Progressively, depending on customers’ requirements, we would like to graduate to speeds up to 350 meters/ minute and then 400 meters/minute,” said Ajay Tandon, president and chief executive officer, engineering business at Uflex Limited. The fully automatic co-extrusion laminator offers a maximum web width of 1300 mm (in LDPE) and can process LDPE, EVA, EAA and PP. Equipped with turret type unwinders and rewinders with auto-splicing, it has 3-layer feedblock with variable geometry. Auto-splicing is available at all stations with maximum speed. It has a specially designed primer coating station for giving anchor coat better bond strength. The machine is also equipped with hydraulic screen changer to increase up-time and has an imported automatic T-die for easy clean-up. The fully automatic machine employs a computerized auto gauge control system to read and correct the coating thickness automatically, if required. Uflex has more than 15 extrusion lamination machines running at its different convert-




Flexibles ing plants, all imported from various parts of the world. “Now we are manufacturing our own extrusion laminators,” said Tandon. “We had launched the first extrusion lamination machine for laminating Woven Poly Propylene (WPP) to OPP film about two years ago. That machine was installed at our own plant. After successfully running the machine and eliminating snags, we took up the project in commercial direction, and started making these machines about a year-and-a-half ago for coating and/or laminating different plastic films”.

“Although low- and medium-end extrusion coating machines are being made in India, semiautomatic and fully automatic co-extrusion or tandem machines like the ones that we make, specifically for wide web lamination, were never being made by any manufacturer in India before Uflex,” Tandon said. According to Tandon, Uflex has already rolled out two semi-automatic machines for two customers. He added, “We already have four orders in hand while another 3 to 4 orders at negotiation stage. We are quite sure that we will get some good leads at the show. We hope to roll out at least 5 to 7 machines in next 12 months.”

In a recent development, Uflex has roped in Uwe Fidersek as advisor – global extrusion coating technology, Uflex. Fidersek has over 40 years of hands-on experience in design and production, installation, commissioning and providing customer service on extrusion lamination machine with one of the best companies of the world located in Germany. Fidersek will provide his expertise to Uflex in manufacturing state-of-the-art extrusion lamination machines to be sold in India and world over in the times to come. The extrusion lamination process is becoming more and more popular in India since last 6 to 8 years. However, Uflex started it almost 20 years ago, though it was at a much smaller scale at that time, according to Tandon. In last about 10 years, it has picked up due to various advantages that it provides. “There are a lot of advantages in using this particular kind of a lamination process over adhesive lamination,” said Tandon. Extrusion lamination offers benefits such as: alleviation of solvents/compounds used in adhesives; ruling out white base ink-printing of the ensuing laminate by using masterbatch in the extrudate that renders it white thereby bringing immense cost savings to the converter; enhanced bond strength; consistent/continuous production of laminate owing to auto-splicing feature of the extrusion laminator; no curing required as in the case of adhesive lamination thereby enhancing production throughput and better strength and barrier properties as compared to adhesive lamination. LDPE is especially suitable for use in the extrusion coating process and is applied to a wide variety of substrates. A major application is in the coating of board for milk and fruit juice cartons, as an LDPE/board/LDPE or LDPE/ board/LDPE/aluminum foil/LDPE laminate (the latter for aseptic packaging). Other applications include specialized laminates for liquid and food packaging, and industrial and building uses. The polyethylene coating provides increased tear resistance, scuff resistance, a heat sealable surface, resistance against chemicals, grease resistance, and a good barrier against water and various gases. z

PLASTINDIA 2018 At the recently concluded Plastindia 2018 exhibition, Manugraph launched its gearless Manuflex 1308 – 400 CI flexo press which features eight printing units. With a printing width of 1.3 meters, the press runs at speeds up to 400

SP Ultraflex launches Roboslit Plus dual turret slitter-rewinder with 1000 m/min speed MAHAN HAZARIKA


t the recently concluded Plastindia 2018, SP Ultraflex launched its latest version of slitter-rewinder in the Roboslit series – Roboslit Plus. Running at speeds up to 1000 m/min, the dual turret slitter-rewinder is an extension of the flagship Roboslit series which is designed for 800 m/ min speed. “Roboslit Plus is a new generation turret machine where we have taken the speed up to 1000 m/min. We have added a lot of safety features on the machine as well as performance-related features which help improve the quality of the finished reel,” said Biku Kohli, managing director of SP Ultraflex. Kohli explained that the ramp up and ramp down time of Roboslit Plus has been reduced to 45 seconds. This allows converters to actually finish their job by running the machine at the maximum speed of 1000 m/minute even while working on short-run jobs, which may be as small as 800 meter. In addition to the Roboslit Plus, SP Ultraflex also displayed its basic slitter-rewinder, Primaslit FL, at the exhibition. “We make eight different slitter-rewinders, and in this segment, this is the widest product range in the world,” said Kohli. Primaslit FL runs at the highest speed of 600 m/min and is a duplex slitter with two shafts – one above and one below. Primaslit FL is differentiated from most of the other slitterrewinders available in the market because it has the unwind and rewind on the same side while the cutter is on the opposite side, which makes it a very convenient machine for the operators to handle. The operator can stand in one position and monitor the unwind and rewind process.

well-known name in the field of web offset press manufacturing, Delhi/NCR-based Naph Graphics diversified to the packaging and converting industry by launching its slitter-rewinder – SlitLine 35 – at Packplus Delhi in 2016. The company’s web offset business, which started in 1990, includes exclusively designed web offset presses for printing newspapers and periodicals for medium sized editions. It is hardly two years since the diversification, but the company’s packaging-converting business has been able to carve a niche for itself in the hyper competitive flexible packaging market. In this intervening period, the company has managed to sell five slitter-rewinders – all in Delhi-NCR – while a few more are in the pipeline, informed Mohit Bansal of Naph Graphics. SlitLine 35 is controlled and supervised by a highly automated system which maintains tight synchronization between PLC/PPC and drives, providing fast, reliable, and error-free communication. The master control panel consists of a touch screen operator interface located at rewind side. The SlitLine uses touch and control system, braking, and guiding system from E+L; drives, which are again powered by E+L electrical panel and automation, from Siemens. Bansal informed that although they currently have one model for the slitter-rewinder, they have plans to introduce new models as per market requirements. Speaking about the reason for diversification, Bansal said, “In any field, you try and look for diversification with time in order to grow and expand your business better. We wanted to




diversify in a way that we don’t have to change our engineering background. We diversified to packaging equipment manufacture because in one way or the other, it is an industry related to our engineering background. It’s is true that web offset presses are used for printing newspapers, but then players who have been doing this are also diversifying to almost similar fields.” According to Bansal, the company’s web offset business has a very loyal client base. Elaborating on it, he said, “Our customers come back to us with new orders because they trust us. In our packaging business as well, our focus is not to have a very big client base but to have a very loyal client base.” For Naph, the crossover to the packaging business has not been easy though. There were numerable challenges, some of which exist even today, which the company had to go through on a daily basis. “We are very new in the market, and we don’t know many people around. We even don’t have a huge database

of prospects – however, there are still people in the market who are looking for the kind of machines that we are producing,” said Bansal. Currently the company is targeting only the Delhi-NCR market. Nevertheless, according to Bansal, if they get an order from any other part of the country, the company will like to go ahead with those as well. At present, Naph Graphics has 10 engineers who look after installation, service and aftersales support. Highlighting the promptness with which its support team acts, Bansal said, “Being from a newspaper background where everything is urgent, providing on-time service is in our gene. In fact, providing best after-sales service is our second core competency – next to our competency in engineering state-of-the art machines.” Currently, the 10-member engineering team is looking after both web-offset and slitter-rewinder customers. However, Naph is building an independent team for the slitterrewinder customers as well. z

t Plastindia 2018, Pelican introduced the Cerutti R-982 rotogravure printing press manufactured at its engineering facility in Rajkot, Gujarat. Pelican signed a strategic agreement with Cerutti to manufacture Cerutti’s rotogravure press in India. Under the terms of the agreement, Pelican will use Cerutti’s manufacturing technology and design to produce rotogravure presses. The rotogravure press displayed at Plastindia was the first machine rolled out after the agreement. “The rotogravure press that we are displaying at Plastindia has already been sold to a customer. Another order is in the pipeline, and we are very much optmistic about it too,” said Gautam Mehra of Reifenhäuser India which is the marketing partner of Pelican. Cerutti Packaging Equipment (part of Cerutti Group) is a company fully controlled by the Cerutti family and is one of the key suppliers in the converting industry, while Pelican is the largest rotogravure press manufacturing company in India.

With speeds up to of 450 m/minute and maximum web width of 1300 mm, Cerutti R-982 has operational controls at each station. “It is a new generation rotogravure press led by ELS technology,” said Mehra. “By perfect integration of advanced electronics and ergonomically designed mechanical components, the press is designed to deliver optimum performance, better operational ease, faster print register response, higher productivity, better print quality, less waste, optimizing ink solvent and energy consumption, faster job changeover etc.” The press allows full process control for the drying operation to reduce energy consumption and avoids solvent retention in the printed substrates. “The press comes with innovative high efficient drying system which allows to achieve better heat and mass transfer by switching from the standard nozzle to arrays of circular impinging jets 3D holes on the printed side and 2D holes on the backside of the web,” concluded Mehra. z ­– Pranay Mathur

EXPLORING NEW FRONTIERS With a belief in constant progression, Cosmo has planned to start a new PET line in Aurangabad in Maharashtra in the year 2019. According to Poddar, the expansion plan for next two years is in the range of Rs 325 to 375 crore. “We are making sure that we are one-stop solution provider for our customers and are able to provide them the right solutions.” Cosmo’s recent possession of land in Aurangabad is an indication of how the company is readying itself for the expansion.

Flexibles NEW CAPACITY AT KARJAN PLANT Cosmo Films announced the commissioning of its second CPP line and a fourth metallizer, both with an annual capacity of 7,500 metric tonnes, in February 2018 at its existing facility at Karjan in Gujarat. With the installation of the two new lines, the company’s annual CPP films capacity will increase from 1800 MT to 9,300 MT, while the metallized films will increase from 15,000 MT to 22,500 MT. “In addition to being a market leader in the BOPP sector, we have emerged as a complete film solutions provider with more offerings and value added services. Moreover, with limited number of organized CPP players in the market, Cosmo is poised to serve a larger customer base,” said Poddar. The 2.85 meter CPP line is 5-layered and is designed to produce specialty films (especially barrier films) for various packaging applications. The new 2.85 meter metallizer is equipped with advanced control monitoring system and closed loop auto deposition control system. The Karjan facility already houses BOPP lines, extrusion coating and functional coating lines, and a metallizer.

INNOVATIONS AT KARJAN PLANT In March 2017, Cosmo Films commissioned its tenth BOPP line – 10.4 meter wide – at Karjan. It is the most advanced line available in the market today in terms of width and output and is the first 10.4 meter line to be installed in the country. The line is equipped to deliver both superior quality products with minimal scratches, oil or additive spots and high surface energy as well as consistent quality due to automatic changeovers. The line is also capable of producing films as thick as 80 microns to cater to segments like textiles which require thicker films. “We are trying multiple new innovations on this line. Typically since BOPP faces the challenge of corona decaying over a period, we are putting up a new technology on this line through which corona can be retained for a longer period. We are working towards better cost control as well as manufacture high quality products – we have further strengthened this line by integrating new technologies to ensure minimum waste,” explained Poddar. The Karjan plant has been running in full capacity since last couple of months. The 10.4 meter line increases Cosmo’s annual BOPP capacity by 40% at 60,000 MT, almost 7.5 tonnes per hour. z

onstantia Flexibles is investing a double-digit million euro (Rs 100 crore) amount in the expansion of production capacity at its Indian subsidiary Parikh Packaging, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The announcement was made during the Plastindia trade fair being held in Gandhinagar between 7 and 12 February 2018.

The company already broke ground in mid-2017, on a new greenfield site close to existing production at Parikh. The site is currently under construction and meets the highest international environmental, hygiene and work safety standards. It will be home to a polyethylene blown film extruder, high-definition flexo printing press and laminators that will produce high barrier laminates that can be fully recycled. The extra capacity will come on stream in 2019 and will serve the growing demand from leading multinationals in the food and home and personal care (HPC) industries in India. The flexible packaging market in India is expected to show double-digit growth in the mid-term, driven by the mega-trend urbanization and the expansion of the retail sector. “Our investment strengthens Parikh Packaging’s credentials as a leading provider of innovation and service to customers in the Indian subcontinent,” said Stefan Grote, executive vice president of the food division at Constantia Flexibles. “Major FMCGs are demanding the

z 8.7 METER BOPET LINE IN 2019 SML Films to set up greenfield plant in Europe



ujarat-based SML Films Limited (formerly Surat Metallics Limited) is on its way to set up a new greenfield BOPET film plant in Europe. The plant will house a state-of-the-art 8.7 meter wide BOPET line running at 500 meters per minute. With a target to produce 36,000 metric tonnes of films per year, the new line will be complemented by high-barrier metallizers and an AlOx coating facility to ensure high-quality, high-barrier films with thick-

ness ranging between 6.5 and 155 micron. The new plant expects to meet just-in-time demands of the European markets by having production facilities and technical services located close to them. The plant is expected to be commissioned by mid-2019. Pradeep Tyle, who pioneered several BOPET film plants in India and overseas in his 34-year stint with Uflex, is overseeing the new project. Founded by Pragnesh Jariwala, SML Films develops, manufactures and supplies various PET films under the brand name, METLON. Based in Surat, the company has been successfully progressing in this field for over 16

years, and so are the first-choice suppliers to many units worldwide. Its wide product range includes clear, metallized and lacquer coated polyester film, metallic yarn (Badla) and glitter powder. Its products are also exported to over 20 countries in Europe. SML produces over 72,000 metric tonnes of 6.5 to 155 microns film per year on two 8.7 meter wide Brückner lines. The two film lines are supplemented by 6 vacuum metallizers, which can churn out 36,000 metric tonnes of metallized films per year, and 10 coating machines. z

Charging electrodes and high voltage generators are most useful to enhance production by creating a temporary bond or attraction between two materials, one of which is an insulator.” According to Mehta, A.T.E’s print and packaging business (PPE) unit is the only Indian manufacturer of register controllers for rotogravure presses. Register controllers have been the mainstay of PPE, however, new product additions include vision systems to monitor print during production runs. Mehta explained, “For rotogravure printers, either there is an entry-level web or a 100% print inspection system. Full repeat web viewing system, which could monitor full width of the web in realtime was a need for many years, particularly in the Indian market. The 55-inch 4K monitor

displaying images of 50+ megapixels resolution results in near-print quality web visualization. The ViewAXIS Tera was an idea given by a few printers and OEMs. They asked if they could have an intermediate system which in later stage can be upgraded to a 100% inspection system. The advantage of doing this is two-fold – first, operators get to learn to identify the defects on a full print repeat monitoring system and second is the staggering investment for the business.” DetectAXIS, a 100% print defect detection system, quickly spots printing defects that are practically invisible to unassisted human eye in real-time by comparing the captured images with a golden template. When a defect is spotted, DetectAXIS generates an alarm, and the operator can take necessary corrective actions. SIPM achieves production record with Bobst FFG 8.20 DISCOVERY flexo folder-gluer


rinting and packaging division of Nanjangud-based South India Paper Mills (SIPM) has achieved a world record for corrugated box production during a single shift with a Bobst FFG 8.20 DISCOVERY flexo folder gluer. The machine completed 106,113 corrugated boxes in eight hours on 19 September 2017, a record made even more remarkable because this involved five separate jobs which had to be set up and changed. “The average of 13,264 boxes per

hour includes the set-up and cleaning time during the shift,” says Pratik Patel, manager – marketing and product development at SIPM Printing & Packaging Division. “We have been producing around 75,000 to 85,000 cartons for most of the shifts.” The record-breaking shift involved a fortuitous combination of jobs and customer requirements. Patel says, “There were five job changes

performed in this particular shift. One of the jobs was 2-color and the rest were single-color jobs. In particular, one of the jobs was a beer carton box, which is a very lightweight board construction, i.e. 100 gsm and three layers with B-flute. This kind of job adds more value to us as well as our customers if processed at the fastest speeds with maximum accuracy, so that it runs flawlessly in the fast case erecting and filling lines at the customer’s end.” SIPM-PPD is a strategic supplier to multinationals including GSK, RB, Britannia, ITC, UB, USL, RSIL, Adani Wilmer, Nestle, American Power Conversion, Unilever, Coca Cola and others. Patel says, “We have a much diversified portfolio, with our carton boxes are supplied to various industry segments such as food, beverages, alcohol and spirits, edible oils, copier paper, fresh agricultural produce, white goods, automobiles, footwear, textiles and many others.”

The Bobst FFG 8.20 DISCOVERY was installed earlier in 2017 and is the company’s first Bobst machine. It takes sheets up to 2,180 mm wide and has four flexo color units. It is run inline with a Mosca strapper/palletizer. Running at full speed, it can produce up to 300 boxes per minute (18,000 per hour) on coated/ uncoated duplex board with white or kraft liners of all types. “We have a range of single-color, 2-, 3- and a few 4-color jobs,” explains Patel. “The Bobst machine is intended to be effectively used in changing many single or 2-color orders, to cater for a wide range of segments with a just-in-time supply concept.” In future SIPM has ambitions to increase productivity on its Bobst FFG 8.20 DISCOVERY still further. Patel says, “Our next target on this machine is 120,000 cartons in an eight hour shift, which is 15,000 cartons an hour.” z

CSI becomes first to purchase complete EFI Nozomi digital press and ERP workflow ecosystem

The 71-inch (1.8-meter) wide LED inkjet device being installed early this summer will include the complete EFI ecosystem of corrugated production options and products, with 6-color plus white ink installed on the press and fully integrated top- and bottom-feeding units. That ecosystem of advanced technologies coming to CSI includes the fast, efficient jobprocessing and color management capabilities of the EFI Fiery NZ-1000 high-performance DFE. n 21 February 2018, Highcon announced the launch of the latest in the Highcon Euclid series, the Highcon Euclid IIIC. This latest machine extends the range of the 3rd generation Highcon Euclid cutting and creasing machines into the world of corrugated and fluted substrates from 1 mm up to 3 mm (40-120 points).

The Highcon Euclid machine has been working with corrugated board at LxBxH in Switzerland since the end of 2015 and is now being made commercially available in the market. Two Rapida 106 presses for Noor Carton & Packaging


t is not often that printing and packaging companies build a completely new production facility. But Noor Carton, a packaging producer from Dammam in Saudi Arabia, is one of those rare cases. The company erected its new plant in 2015 and has since been producing on two high-performance Rapida 106 coater presses, one with five colors, the other with six colors.

In creating a new digital business model, WEIG is drawing on the experience, advice and technology of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg). “We’re looking to turn our Emskirchen site into a folding carton business that leads the way when it comes to availability and flexibility. We’re therefore entering into a partnership with Heidelberg in which our strategic and business interests are aligned. Under the new business model, Heidelberg will no longer make its money by supplying press components, but solely by achieving agreed productivity and growth targets,” explains Toni Steffens, commercial director of WEIG Packaging. The Heidelberg subscription model follows the growing pay-per-use trend in mechanical engineering and aims to move away from growth based solely on selling and installing printing capacity.

CUSTOMERS PAY FOR USAGE IN NEW HEIDELBERG DIGITAL BUSINESS MODEL Under this Heidelberg model, customers only pay for the number of sheets actually printed. Under the conventional business model, they buy the presses and pay separately for consumables or services. With the new digital business model, all the equipment, all consumables required – such as printing plates, inks, coatings, washup solutions, and blankets – and a comprehensive range of services geared to availability are included in the price per sheet to be charged. This differs significantly from the click charge model already introduced by digital press suppliers. Although these suppliers also charge per sheet, they mainly base this on their own costs and not on the customer’s business model. “Under the Heidelberg subscription model,

However, the model in its totality also includes all service components, replacement and wear parts, all consumables required to operate the presses, and a training and consulting service aimed at increasing availability. In addition, WEIG is using the new Heidelberg

Assistant digitization solution, which went into series production at the end of 2017. The Heidelberg Assistant is being developed into the central control panel. In practice, this means a big step is already being taken in the direction of Industry 4.0 for the entire sector, with equipment and components communicating independently. Maintenance requirements and wear will be identified at an early stage so as to enable joint, predictive service planning. This will significantly improve the availability of equipment. WEIG will benefit from enhanced flexibility in terms of customers and scheduling with a view to achieving just-in-time production. “Establishing pay-per-use models in industrial offset printing is the result of our company’s ongoing digital transformation, and also our software and data expertise. Monotech has sold more than 30 Scodix presses so far in India. Of these, around 25 are Scodix S74 and S75 presses, and around five are Scodix Ultra presses. “Scodix Ultra is positioned for the offset and packaging market. At speeds up to 1,250 sheets per hour, we feel that for embellishment requirements, Scodix Ultra press is a great product for the packaging market in India.”

That is where our expertise or the expertise of our equipment lies – to handle multiple kinds of media which is generally used for offset printing.” Jain also feels that there is no threat from the Chinese market as such. He said, “Technologically we are far ahead and advanced, and so it will take some time for them to catch up. uring an interview with The Packman in February 2018, Yoshinori Koide, director, business strategy & project management, Konica Minolta Business Solutions, said that the company had an exciting time last year despite emerging challenges, including implementation of GST mid-year. “We have overcome most of these challenges,” said Koide. “By the end of this financial year, we are hopeful about selling two IP products – an AccurioLabel 190 press and a KM1. We are at the final stage of closing these deals and, hopefully, if we are able to close these two deals, it indeed will be a very successful year for us.” The company is looking at double digit growth in addition to

increasing its product line in the IP segment. Konica Minolta’s PP arm has also done well, having sold more than 600 presses so far in FY 2017-18.

The AccurioLabel 190, a full-digital toner press, is developed and manufactured in cooperation with Danish company Grafisk Maskinfabrik (GM). It had its Europe launch in October 2017. AccurioLabel 190 replaces the bizhub PRESS C71cf, a system that has sold over 100 units across the globe since its launch two years ago. Building on this success, GM is supplying its DC330 mini converting unit for the AccurioLabel 190 press, which can work in-line with the machine or as a standalone unit. According to Manish Gupta, DGM PP and IP marketing, Konica Minolta India, who




Labels was also present along with Koide during the interview with The Packman, the AccurioLabel 190 is positioned for short-run requirements where it is not competing with any other presses. “The AccurioLabel 190 is positioned for short run requirements keeping in mind that there is a huge gap in this area where no other manufacturers are present. The press is an ideal choice for customers with demands less than 50,000 linear meter of labels per month,” explained Gupta. Koide highlighted that Konica Minolta has a proven technology in terms of electro photography and that AccurioLabel 190 press is an extension of the already existing technology that the company has pioneered since so many years. “Precisely speaking, we did not have to

reinvent any new technology for this press – we already had it. We just had to extend our already existing contemporary technology to be in the label segment,” he stated.

PLANNING TO EXPLOIT THE LABELS AND PACKAGING MARKET Koide sounded optimistic about how much Konica Minolta can do in the label and packaging segment. He informed, “The label market is growing and we have ambitious plans in store for the labels and packaging segment. As far as the label industry is concerned, we are looking forward to introducing enhanced printing features in our MGI series. Currently, we have cut-sheet Jet Varnish series. However, we have

plans to introduce roll-to-roll fed machines in the Jet Varnish series.” To strengthen its label business in India, Konica Minolta recently appointed Insight and Reifenhäuser as its channel partners to represent its label press in East-West and North-South India respectively. “We are still in the course of building a strong IP team. The business is growing, so is the team which is committed to grow at the same level,” said Koide. He also informed that the IP team will be sharing resources with the already existing PP team, “IP is a different segment in terms of application, but we have installed IP products at a lot of our customers’ premises; so there is some overlapping where we take support from the existing team.” z

Vinsak installed the 10-color Synchroline full servo UV flexo press equipped with movable cold foil, chiller, two die-cutting stations with easy waste, slitter, turn-bar, re-lam, delam, sheeter, conveyer, and lamination. The other important features are quality control, quick change over, Air Blade System (ABS) for pneumatic adjustment of the doctor blade and pre-register system. Vinsak also installed USAR (universal Slitter Rewinder) 530 equipped and thermal inkjet system for variable data personalization. Pritam Choudhary, director, Manipal Printing Press, said, “Three months ago, Vinsak had installed all these machines at our Kenya plant. t the beginning of December last year, Heidelberg China and Gallus Shanghai jointly organized in the Print Media Center in Shanghai a launch event for the Gallus Labelmaster in China. Around 160 guests from label print shops in China and Region Asia as well as media journalists attended the event. They were able to watch live demos of the Gallus Labelmaster in label production and experienced a new height in leading label printing. “We are extremely optimistic about the future development of packaging and label printing in China,” explains Benny Huang, CEO of Heidelberg China. “In recent years, with

an increasing middle class and accelerating urbanization processes, there are more and more specific requirements on packaging and label. It is our duty to continue providing high quality products and services for packaging and label print shops in China.” Asia has become the fastest growing label market in the world. It is expected that by 2019, the Asian label market will have increased by 5.5%, in which the growth rate of self-adhesive labels will reach 6.3%.

“Owing to the higher cost of raw materials and labor today, print shops are paying more attention to productivity,” describes Teddy Jiang, general manager of Gallus Shanghai. “At the

z STRATEGIC ALLIANCE FOR DIGITAL PACKAGING INKS Siegwerk to manufacture Agfa’s inkjet UV inks


iegwerk Druckfarben, one of the leading international suppliers of printing inks for packaging applications and labels, and Agfa Graphics, a leading supplier in offset prepress and inkjet print, have entered into a strategic alliance for digital packaging inks. The contract signed between the two companies includes a business transfer from Agfa Graphics to Siegwerk of a selected OEM customer list, access to know-how, intellectual property and services in the domain of UV curable digital inkjet inks for the single pass packaging and labels industry. “This strategic alliance is a perfect fit for both of us,’’ says Tom Cloots, director – industrial inkjet Agfa. “Packaging and label printers

are increasingly attracted by the performance and quality of the Agfa inks that are used in a wide variety of printing systems. With this deal, we allow Siegwerk to extensively leverage on our strong network with OEM print head and equipment manufacturers as well as on our know-how and intellectual property in the domain of UV curable digital inks for packaging. At the same time, Agfa continues to focus on the other domains of the growing industrial print segment where Agfa has stronger market access potential.” “With this deal we are bridging the best of two worlds. While we will continue to rely on Agfa’s existing strong collaboration with OEMs and print head manufacturers, we will be able to offer our packaging market access and ap-

Both the companies will work closely to ensure a handover of business without any interference for the customers of both companies. Agfa will continue to manufacture on behalf of Siegwerk for several months to support a smooth transition for the customers. After the transition period, Siegwerk will produce the new inks and varnishes according to the highest quality and safety standards at its own inkjet manufacturing center in Annemasse, France. With its global commercial network, Siegwerk then will be able to offer its new UV inkjet portfolio to customers worldwide. The parties have agreed not to disclose any financial details. z

he Indian Printing Packaging & Allied Machinery Manufacturers’ Association (IPAMA), the organizer of the 14th Printpack India 2019, has already sold out more than 60% of the exhibition space to 233 exhibitors (till 17 February 2018). As per the existing policy of IPAMA management, the participants are being issued Priority Number on receipt of the application along with the requisite amount of space rent. The priority number is generated within 48 hours of the credit of the requisite amount in IPAMA’s Bank account. To make the participation hassle free, the space will be allotted to the exhibitors strictly in accordance with the priority number. This information has already been circulated to participants, through various channels, for their information and guidance. The prominent companies amongst those who have already booked their space for participation include LineOMatic, HP, Provin Technos (Ryobi), Megabound, Xerox India, Manugraph India, Insight Communication (Komori), Technova, Kodak India, Prakash Offset, Memory Repro, Alpna Visual, Electro Mec, Bobst, Monotech, Malhotra Graphics, Excel Machinery, NBG Printographics, Ronald Web, Manroland etc. Many more big companies, including Konica Minolta, The Printers House, Canon, Zhongke India, Muller Martini are in the pipe-line. LineOMatic is leading as far as space booking is concerned. It has booked 500 square meters of space. The companies booking space on or before 31 March 2018 will get a discount of Rs.500 per square meter. The new companies enrolling as IPAMA Members will also get further discount of 5%. NSIC members can submit their applications for availing MSME assistance through them. IPAMA intends to provide world-class exhibition facilities to visitors and exhibitors. A multi-purpose website, relating to Printpack India 2019 exhibition is being developed. All the relevant information which will be incorporated there can be shared by the visitors

The industry associations, which are interested in organizing seminars, conferences, business-meets etc. during the exhibition, in association with IPAMA, can submit their proposals for consideration and approval. IPAMA has also signed one more MOU with Indian Paper Corrugated & Packaging Machinery Manufacturers’ Association (ICPMA) for marketing and sales of the space earmarked for the corrugation industry directly and or through sub-agents; dissemination of information of Printpack India 2019 through website, monthly newsletters and bulletins to their members and potential exhibitors. ICPMA will also be branded as Corrugation Industry Partner for promotion of the show. Before ICPMA, IPAMA had signed agreements with Association of Label Printers & Suppliers (ALPS); Indian Paper Corrugated & Packaging Machinery Manufacturers’ Association (ICPMA); and Screen Printers’ Association of India (SPAI).

In continuation to the agreements with different Indian associations of graphic arts industry, IPAMA is now heading towards SAARC countries, and also signed its first MoU with Bangladesh Mudran Shilpa Samity. The financial sector of Bangladesh is the second largest in the subcontinent and a growing market. Association is also approaching Sri Lanka and Bhutan in its second phase. As a part of promotional activites, IPAMA has already organized two promotional meets, one in Mumbai and the another in Amritsar. IPAMA has also marked its presence in domestic exhibitions, including those organized at Kolkata, Vijayawada, Ahmedabad, Chennai etc. In the past IPAMA had also marked its presence in many foreign exhibitions for promoting PPI 2019. It is also participating in Collate 2018 being organized by Sri Lanka Printers Association at Colombo in March 2018. z

he Xeikon Café Exhibition and Conference, scheduled to take place 2023 March 2018 in Belgium, will feature a range of newly introduced components that will make the event even more relevant, informative and interactive for participants. The 2018 edition will mark the introduction of an educational Academy with technologydriven presentations and practical workshop sessions, and an informal social gathering to increase networking opportunities.

The newly introduced Academy will provide a technical, educational forum centred around innovative end-use applications and packaging decoration techniques. “By introducing the Xeikon Café Academy, we are taking the technical element of the event to the next level. The goal is to guide visitors towards transforming their businesses for a successful future,” says Danny Mertens of Xeikon Café. “We are driven by the desire to help participants make the most of the fantastic technology that is available in the market and to discover ways in which they can use it to their best advantage.” The Academy will be a mix of workshops and presentations. The interactive workshops will be designed to help attendees acquire knowledge and make the right decisions for their businesses. Going beyond product specifications, the workshops will cover topics related to Food Safety, Automation, Exploring the Creativity of Digital, Saving on Cost and Print Technologies. The presentations in the Academy will focus on the main packaging decoration techniques available today, while covering all aspects of digital production – from workflow, print media and print engines to consumables and finishing equipment. Attendees can choose from a range of topics, including self-adhesive, heat transfer, wet-glue, flexible packaging, among others, and attend the sessions most relevant for their business. Each presentation is concluded with a technology demonstration in the exhibition area of the Xeikon Café, making it highly practical and hands-on.

Industry News Christian Traumann of MULTIVAC new interpack president


hristian Traumann, managing director and Group CFO of MULTIVAC Sepp Haggenmüller SE & Co. KG, is the president of interpack 2020. In the constituent meeting of the advisory board for the coming interpack, he was elected president of this event. Since 2015 Traumann has been the chairman of the Food Processing and Packaging Machinery Association within VDMA and already served as a president of interpack in 2011. Acting as vice-presidents will be Markus Rustler, managing partner at Theegarten-Pactec GmbH & Co. KG, and Roland Strassburger, CEO of SCHÜTZ GmbH & Co. KGaA. All candidates were elected unanimously. This first advisory board meeting kicked off the phase of strategic orientation and preparation of the specific content for the forthcoming interpack. It is held every three years and will run at the Düsseldorf Exhibition Center from 7

to 13 May 2020. Its last edition attracting 2,866 exhibitors and 170,899 visitors in May 2017 was highly praised by exhibitors. Many companies reported they had never closed so many concrete deals during a trade fair before. 2020 will also see the upstream supplies trade fair ‘components – special trade fair by interpack’ being held again concurrently with interpack at a central location at the exhibition center. Due to the positive response to the 2017 event, possible extensions are now being sounded out. Registrations for both trade fairs have already started and will be accepted until late February 2019. Exhibitors and visitors at interpack 2020 can look forward to a completely re-designed South entrance with a brand new Hall 1. From summer 2019 this new building will replace the former Halls 1 and 2 while also offering six conference rooms in addition to the exhibition area. It will be directly linked to the Congress Center Süd. z

Tetra Pak delivers more than half a billion fully renewable packages


etra Pak has now delivered more than half a billion packs of Tetra Rex Bio-based, the world’s first beverage carton to be manufactured entirely from renewable materials. The landmark event was announced at the Museum of Brands, in London, where the package, was featured in a new sustainability display.

Tetra Rex Bio-based, which was launched in October 2014, is manufactured solely from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified and controlled sources paperboard, together with plastics derived from sugar cane, all traceable to their origins. Packages made from renewable materials are essential for preserving the environment for future generations. Renewable resources can be replenished naturally over time and enable a move away from fossil fuel-based materials, reducing the environmental impact as well as improving resource efficiency.




Christina Chester, product director at Tetra Pak said, “We are delighted to see the growing popularity of Tetra Rex Bio-based among customers. Packages made entirely from renewable materials are not only good for the planet, but also good for brands that seek to differentiate themselves with stronger environmental messages. MPS opens branch office in Asia


he official opening of the MPS Systems Asia office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia earlier this month marks the next step in MPS’ strategy to expand local presence throughout the Asian market. Tim Klappe, recently appointed as managing director for the Asia Pacific region, will lead operations of the new branch. Joining Klappe in the new branch office is George Tan, MPS area sales manager.

Klappe is well known in the printing industry through his various executive positions representing reputable print-industry brands while living and working in Asia for over 27 years. “With its central location in the South-Asian region, Kuala Lumpur is an ideal location for a dedicated MPS office,” commented Klappe. “Now that the infrastructure of the local branch is fully operational, we are focusing our efforts on business development through supporting our existing Agent network and increasing local representation. In fact, we just signed an agreement with a new agent in Taiwan, Chimeng Packaging.
