FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Pacific University has completed another successful year of educating our students and preparing future leaders to serve, as is evident by the number of awards and accomplishments for students, faculty and staff. As chair of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to report that this continuous trend of excellence keeps Pacific University in the forefront of our peers. The University once again earned high rankings among the top universities in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report, The Princeton Review and Forbes. The atmosphere of discovery and the quality of our programs at Pacific University have generated new grants for an increasingly diverse group of students who come to study under the oaks. I would especially like to thank all the individuals, organizations and groups that make Pacific University unique, and invite you to peruse these pages to discover highlights of this past year. Thank you for all you do to help make future programs for our students at Pacific University possible.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

FROM THE PRESIDENT As I enter my third year at Pacific University, I am constantly reminded of the extremely high quality of work our students, faculty and staff put forth. Like previous years, this past one has been filled with accomplishments, from the establishment of new scholarships and grants to the creation of several new programs. The featured donors in this year’s report are exceptional examples of selfless giving, including Dr. Jim Currie, who endowed a fund to support chemistry students’ travel regionally and nationally to present research. Another, Trustee John King, established the Sara HopkinsPowell Endowed Scholarship Fund in honor of our former College of Health Professions executive dean. Sara, in turn, contributed her own resources to the fund, which allows our deeply committed graduate students the opportunity to gain practicum experience abroad by treating and educating underserved populations. Alumni Clark and Rae Peters, class of 1965, helped establish a scholarship to attract prospective students to the College of Education’s new School of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

The new School will address what is expected to be a high demand for qualified speech-language pathologists by offering a master’s degree beginning in fall 2012. The continued support seen in these examples is truly inspiring, and I want to thank everyone who has given time or gifts to the University. All who contribute truly make a difference in the University’s ability to continue to provide opportunities for current and future students. Your ongoing support is and will be crucial to the quality of the Pacific experience for generations to come.

History buffs will get their chance to view historic images of Washington County in the future through a joint project of the Pacific University Library and the Washington County Museum. A $107,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services supports Washington County Heritage Online through the Library Services and Technology Act administered by the Oregon State Library. The project will create a digital library of historic photographs, illustrating the vibrant history and development of the county.

An extensive personal collection of papers, photographs, memorabilia and other items from Trustee Emeritus and former Oregon Governor Victor G. Atiyeh is archived at the University Library on the Forest Grove campus. The growing collection includes items from Atiyeh’s long legislative career representing Washington County in Salem, his eight-year term as governor from 1979 to 1987 and his post-gubernatorial years as an advocate for the state’s economic interests and the Oregon Republican Party.

The return of football last fall to Pacific University’s inter-collegiate sports not only brought back memories to many alumni, but some 100 players—along with their parents—discovered a University rich with tradition and steeped in academic excellence. Despite a 0-9 record, the team measured its success in team chemistry, in learning and in constant improvement as the season went on.

The collection is housed in the Library’s repositories for Archives and Special Collections and will be available to the public. “It will serve as an immensely valuable resource for those wishing to understand the issues shaping Oregon during the last decades of the 20th century,” noted University Librarian Marita Kunkel.

What Professor Emeritus James Currie misses most in his retirement is interacting with students. That’s one of the factors that led him to create the endowed fund for chemistry students.

That Extra Element Distinguished Professor Emeritus James Currie Jr. loves chemistry and Pacific University’s chemistry students. He loves them so much that he created the Currie Chemistry Fund so they may travel to conferences and symposiums in order to broaden their scope and share their chemistry experiences. This fund will provide for Pacific chemistry students in two principle ways. First, students may use it to help pay for travel costs to attend and present their work at regional or national conferences. Second, the fund will help pay expenses to bring seminar speakers and guest lecturers to the University. Currie established the fund because he saw a gap in student support, especially in getting them professionally involved in their field. This meant being able to attend conferences in order to see and be seen. “The University was helpful when funding summer research for chemistry students,” he said, “but there wasn’t as much aid available

I give to Pacific because when, for instance, a senior presenting a capstone project wanted to travel to a national conference.” Once the fund is endowed, it won’t just be for summer research students; it will be there to help any chemistry student who needs it. The reason for creating the fund is simple. Currie, like most Pacific University professors, enjoyed teaching because of the students. “Rather than one particular memory, I have many fond memories of long hours spent with students in a cramped chemistry lab,” he said. “That’s what I miss the most in my retirement—the interaction I’ve had with students under sometimes difficult circumstances.”

I truly embrace the mission of the University. I believe the spirit of the liberal arts and sciences is the foundation of a meaningful life. I genuinely have been lucky to pursue my life’s work here, and I am pleased to help sustain that mission and that spirit. In addition, it is a convenient way to support a specific program that I am committed to (the Philosophy Department’s annual student conference). At the same time, it’s nice to know this can help the University achieve its broader fundraising goals. Dave Boersema, Philosophy Professor

That interaction will only get better thanks to this fund, since it will open doors previously closed to some chemistry students and provide new ideas for students to consider when seminar speakers or guest lecturers come to campus.

PLANNE D GIVI NG THE POWER OF A GIF T

Tradition of Philanthropy A gift can mean the world to a Pacific University student. Scholarships facilitate a lasting legacy of support for students in need. Please pay it forward to a future Boxer. All gifts to Pacific University are essential in its continuing success, no matter the size or timing. While many choose to make gifts during their lifetimes, some may make gifts to the University in their estate plans.  Most often this is done through a provision in their will or trust. A well-planned gift helps ensure Pacific University remains the high-quality institution it is today for generations of students to come.

Bob Lohr O.D. ’69 was a nontraditional student who assisted the College of Optometry by creating the Dr. Robert M. Lohr Endowed Scholarship Fund with his bequest.  He also was a generous and loyal donor throughout his lifetime. The Lohr fund helps optometry

students who are going back to school after changing their career paths, as he did. His daughters also generously contributed to the fund that meant so much to their father.

Charles Ward ’49 left his entire estate to Pacific University in order to honor both of his parents, who were graduates as well. His mother, Norma Minkler, graduated in 1914, and his father, Charles E. Ward, a United Church of Christ minister, graduated in 1912.

Heart of Oak Society honors individuals who have made a provision for Pacific, such as a bequest, trust or life insurance policy through their estate. If you have made such plans, please let us know, so we can say thank you by recognizing you in this special society. As a member of the Heart of Oak Society, you will receive a personal invitation to the President’s Dinner as well as other special events. In addition, you will have the pleasure of knowing you have provided an everlasting gift.

As a member of Pacific’s earliest legacy families, Ward wanted to honor the prominent place his alma mater played in his life. His gift funds a need-based scholarship that helps undergraduate students complete their education.

Highly coveted research grants have been awarded to two assistant professors in the University’s School of Pharmacy. The Medical Research Foundation awarded a $40,000 grant to support new investigators to Fawzy Elbarbry. His project seeks to lay the foundation for understanding the underlying mechanism of the anti-hypertensive effect of sulforaphane and how it may affect Cytochrome P450 enzymes. The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy granted a $8,600 New Pharmacy Faculty Research Award to Cassandra Arendt. Her research is titled Localizing ligand specificity determinants in purine nucleoside transporters. Pacific grads Terra Nielson ’11 and Sara Brells ’11 succeeded in reducing the number of plastic water bottles sold on campus in 2010-11. Dining Services at Pacific University agreed to the DRINK LOCAL campaign and no longer provides bottled water for sale, though there are bottles still available in vending machines. Instead of using and discarding plastic bottles, students now refill their own bottles at one of several hydration stations found on campus.

Homeless shelters and hunger organizations in San Francisco were the recipients of volunteer efforts of a dozen Pacific University undergraduates during spring break last March. The Alternative Spring Break is organized every year through the University’s Center for Civic Engagement (CCE). Last October, students also traveled to Tacoma, Wash., to provide similar community support to local organizations as part of the Alternative Fall Break. Students involved in the CCE’s alternative breaks help serve meals, build homes and learn first-hand the effects of poverty and misfortune.

Friends of Speech Clark ’65 and Rae (Salvador) Peters ’65 met in a phonetics class at Pacific University, but it definitely wasn’t love at first sight. Rae noticed that Clark was late to class, and she did not care for his slicked back hair. Rae sat in the front of the class, while Clark took a seat in the back. A year later, they were a couple and as Rae recalls, “had a great time in class.” Both share a passion for speech, its importance in education and for Pacific University. After graduating in 1965, Rae went on to become a speech therapist in the Lynch School District, and Clark taught speech at Clackamas High School. After raising their children and supporting them during their education at Pacific Lutheran, the couple decided it was time to “come home.” With their deep connection to the University and to the field of speech, the Peters have been instrumental in bringing a speech program back to Pacific University.

That work included Clark’s participation in the “Friends of Speech Program,” which counted among its members the late Dr. Fred Scheller. As a result, the new Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) master’s degree program at Pacific University will begin in Fall 2012. The Peters founded the first scholarship for prospective students to motivate others. Through their generous donation, Clark and Rae have established the Aurora Peters Speech-Language Pathology Endowed Scholarship Fund. The Peters hope to inspire students who will benefit from their financial support and hope their gift will encourage others to donate and continue the legacy of speech at Pacific University.

Students giving back For Evan Schreurs ’14, giving means receiving. As a member of Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (STAT), Schreurs knows the importance of student giving. Students are able to help directly fund the changes they wish to see within the University and thereby have their voices heard. By providing gifts to Pacific, students are helping improve their University as well as that of future students. Schreurs encourages his fellow students to help facilitate the changes they wish to see through giving.

Eyes on the Community James Berglund becomes the first recipient of the Massih Prize for a Distinguished Optometrist. James H. Berglund O.D. ’60 may have preceded Kamelia Massih O.D. ’85 at the College of Optometry, but they both share a spirit of service to Pacific University. Berglund is the inaugural recipient of the Kamelia Massih Prize for a Distinguished Optometrist, supported by an endowment established by the late Massih’s estate. The recently established prize will be given annually in recognition of a Pacific alumnus or alumna who has made a significant impact on the optometry profession. “It is truly an honor for me to be the first recipient of the Kamelia Massih Prize,” Berglund said. Berglund spent 21 years in the optical field, both in private practice and in the eye-care products industry. In 2000, he and his wife Mary ’58 donated $3 million to establish the Berglund Center for Internet Studies. Today, Berglund Hall, a LEED-certified building, houses the Berglund Center, as well as the

College of Education, its Early Learning Community daycare and the College of Arts & Sciences’ Business Department. Berglund’s career and support of Pacific exemplifies Kamelia Massih’s values, said her brother, Fariborz Maseeh. She came to the United States from her native Iran in 1978 to pursue a degree in biology. After graduating from Oregon State University in 1981, she completed her doctorate of optometry at Pacific in 1985. She had her own practice and spent countless hours supporting local and national charities.

David Wolf O.D. ’83 believes the eventual move of the College of Optometry to the Health Professions Campus is necessary to continue growth. Not only will it attract bright new students, but it also will draw more cutting-edge professors so the size of Pacific’s optometry classes may remain the same to allow for more contact time with professors. “The expansion of the Health Care Professions has upgraded Pacific’s offerings. Thinking about the shared experiences of all the health professional programs is very exciting,” he said. Wolf serves with Scott Nehring ’79, O.D. ‘83 and Eric Knutson O.D. ‘66 leading efforts to raise funds for this initiative.

“Dr. Berglund preceded Kamelia as a practitioner, but his lifetime commitment to the values Kamelia held so dear makes him most worthy of being this award’s first honoree,” said Maseeh. “Our family hopes this gift will recognize excellence of optometry graduates of Pacific University and will inspire other alumni to carry on Kamelia’s passion for serving our community and those in need.”

Noam Chomksy’s visit to Pacific in April drew an overflow crowd of 1,500, many of whom waited in line for the event hours before its start. The renowned linguist, philosopher and political dissident discussed prospects for peace in the Middle East. University alumna Candace Yonashiro ’10 of Honolulu has been named the 2011 recipient of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance’s (AAHPERD) Research Consortium’s Undergraduate Student Research Award. Yonashiro sought to better understand the role of culture on dietary behavior, leading all facets of research in producing Influence of Hawaiian Culture on Dietary Behaviors of College Students with professors Rebecca Concepcion and Brian Jackson. Her research suggests that native Hawaiian college students who study on the mainland experience additional stressors, compared to their mainland counterparts, which may reduce their intention to eat well.

Pacific’s support of the Oregon Japanese relief effort reached a high point on April 20 as a delegation of students, faculty and staff took part in an auction and dinner to raise funds for those stricken by the March earthquake and tsunamis. The event, Pink Zone 2011: From Oregon with Love, was organized by the Japan-America Society in Oregon with proceeds going to MercyCorps’ Oregon Japan Relief Fund. Nicole Nowlin ’11 spearheaded the effort by securing $1,500 from the College of Arts & Sciences Student Senate (CASSS). Subsequent donations from ARAMARK/Boxer Dining, Student Life and individuals resulted in additional support of $1,030.

A Fund for Global Learning Pacific University received a $100,000 gift from Board of Trustees member John King to establish the Sara Hopkins-Powell Endowed Scholarship Fund. The fund is in honor of Hopkins-Powell, the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and former executive dean of the College of Health Professions (2005-10). She also has donated $10,000 to this fund. “I am honored that trustee John King and the University have established a fund for graduate students in education, health professions and optometry to study and work internationally,” she said. “These experiences change lives, and my hope is that this donation encourages others to contribute so that even more students can have this opportunity.” The fund supports student and faculty international education opportunities, as well as international students’ education at Pacific. Community service to underserved populations is usually a component of applicant proposals. “The Sara Hopkins-Powell fund was established to encourage Pacific University College of Health Professions students to experience

learning overseas,” King said. “A college education is incomplete in today’s global society without a foreign language and time spent in foreign countries.” “I chose to honor Sara because she provided outstanding leadership as the first dean of the College of Health Professions,” King added. “Pacific University is stronger due to her vision and accomplishments.” During the time Hopkins-Powell served as executive dean of the College of Health Professions, the College established its Health Professions Campus in Hillsboro, a highly successful Interprofessional Course and an Interprofessional Diabetes Clinic. Her leadership resulted in the expansion of the College’s services to meet the needs of underserved communities in Washington County and Portland. King has enjoyed a distinguished career in healthcare, having served as chief executive officer for Legacy Health System from 1991-99. He is currently a consultant and a member of Pacific’s Board of Trustees since 1999.

The first three recipients of the Sara Hopkins-Powell Endowed Scholarship Fund are on their way to treating patients worldwide. Melissa Lutsch, a special education endorsement candidate in the College of Education, traveled to Mexico in March 2011 to teach in a local community. Amanda Terrell, a doctoral candidate in the School of Professional Psychology, traveled in July 2011 to Nicaragua to treat abused and orphaned girls. Brandon Smith, a student in the School of Physician Assistant Studies, will travel to Kenya in May 2012 for a six-week practitioner rotation through the Ray of Hope Foundation.

With this growth, the need for greater depth in the liberal arts foundations is necessary for strong professional development. Undergraduate programs in exercise science, psychology, business, music and dance have experienced heightened popularity and continue to serve as both catalyst and springboard for undergraduates striving toward advanced degrees. The Masters of Fine Arts in Writing, also a program affiliated with Pacific’s undergraduate college, continues to break enrollment records with a nationally-ranked cadre of writers from across the country who gather here year after year to polish their craft and contribute to a body of thrilling new literature.
