Chris Botti Vivaldi’s Four Seasons PACIFIC SYMPHONY YOUTH ENSEMBLES:

Santiago Strings Youth Wind Ensemble Youth Orchestra

Midori and The Planets The Firebird, Ballet for Kids!

To mark Pacific Symphony’s 2015-16 season, we celebrated the Year of the Musician with a series of portraits taken in popular Orange County destinations. These remarkable images adorned the covers of the program books throughout the year and represented the pride the orchestra has in being part of our community’s cultural fabric.

All part of the Symphony’s woodwind section, Jessica Pearlman Fields (oboe), Rose Corrigan (bassoon), Ben Smolen (flute) and Joshua Ranz (clarinet) traveled south to San Clemente for a day at the pier.

Chairman’s and President’s Message

Pacific Symphony 2015-16

Dear Pacific Symphony Supporters: It truly takes a village. The many achievements of the 2015-16 season are the direct result of the artistic brilliance of our outstanding musicians, a visionary music director, volunteers, board leaders, loyal audiences, donors and a hardworking staff who collectively believe that a great symphony orchestra is a high priority for our region. This report to the community includes artistic highlights from the 2015-16 season, education program results, community impact, audience building and fundraising successes. The enclosed information showcases the Symphony’s financial strength and the critical role you play in making that success possible. As a nationally recognized cultural institution, Pacific Symphony thanks you, our dedicated donors, subscribers and volunteers, who fuel our achievements during the year. As we look back on the past year, Pacific Symphony experienced an incredible season of ticket sales, multiple sold-out performances and another stellar fundraising year—which celebrated Pacific Symphony musicians. These outstanding artists continue to reach new heights of excellence— as an ensemble and as individuals— broadening their repertoire and showcasing their versatility throughout many venues in the community. Michael Kerr

Music Director Carl St.Clair is also pushing new boundaries through exciting commissions, recordings, programmatic formats, digital media and artistic partnerships that further deepen the relevance of symphonic music in the 21st century. Principal Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman provides humor, energy and programming finesse to our much beloved Pops series, while Assistant Conductor Roger Kalia has elevated the quality of the Family Musical Mornings. Under the guiding vision of Maestro St.Clair and gifted ensemble conductors—Roger Kalia, Gregory Whitmore and Irene Kroesen—Pacific Symphony Youth Ensembles have grown into the preeminent training organization in Southern California, with students going on to the finest conservatories and universities in the country.

John E. Forsyte

“Children cheering our musicians who come to their schools, veterans rising to be recognized at the Symphony’s annual July 4th concert, and standing ovations for artistic performances that ignite the imagination…these are the moments that transcend our daily lives and help to remind us of the unique place Pacific Symphony and Carl St.Clair hold in the hearts of Orange County’s communities.” Through the community and regional partnerships we have formed, the Symphony is providing free concerts, therapeutic music and advancing excellence in instrumental education. The Symphony’s vision is to dramatically widen its service territory to cover all areas of Orange County and the greater Los Angeles region. You, our dedicated and generous patrons, are the cornerstone of our every triumph. Maintaining a consistently balanced budget, while investing in innovative programming and pivotal community engagement, the Symphony’s accomplishments would not be possible without your support. Finally, we are deeply grateful to our Board of Directors, Board of Counselors, corps of volunteers and all the many support organizations who focus their time and talent on our success. Thank you for all that you do for Pacific Symphony. Warm regards,

Michael Kerr Chairman of the Board of Directors

John E. Forsyte President and Chief Executive Officer

Music Director’s Message Dear Friends: As I look back on this astonishing season, I am so thankful to all of you for your continuing support of Pacific Symphony, which has helped make this year a success. This ongoing generosity is demonstrated in another record-breaking year of ticket sales that included the sold-out performances of “Turandot,” which set an all-time box office record! And speaking of “Turandot”— what an extraordinary production over three incredible evenings this past February! From full costumes, headdresses and inventive staging using every performance space in the hall, to the amazing video projections that added depth and insight to the story, and our guest artists, chorus and Symphony musicians that voluminously filled the hall—it was a magical presentation! Over three nights, we luxuriated in the beautiful melodies and gorgeous passages of Puccini’s magnificent score, while celebrating Chinese New Year over the week of performances. The 2015-16 season included a number of marvelous highlights, not the least of which was our Opening Night Celebration with Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, which infused a joyful theme to the beginning of the Classical series. This year’s American Composers Festival celebrated the late composer Stephen Paulus through new and seasoned works featuring the William J. Gillespie Concert Organ. The illustrious Midori returned to our stage in April, with her inimitable style and magnificent interpretation. And the superb Simone Dinnerstein graced our hall playing Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” in a themed program that introduced the source material of Charles Ives’ brilliant Symphony No. 2. Pacific Symphony concluded its season with three of the most encompassing works in the symphonic repertoire—Holst’s “The Planets,” Strauss’s “Alpine Symphony” and Berlioz’s “Symphony Fantastique.” This is a mark of distinction.

It’s hard to put into words the magnetic charisma and profound artistry of legendary pianist André Watts. His performance capped off our season and was truly memorable. The Saturday evening performance was shared in an outdoor Plazacast with one of the largest crowds we’ve ever seen at such an event. As André turned 70 just a few days after our engagement, his long career has firmly established him as the greatest of his generation, taking artistry to new heights and inspiring all those in his presence. At the end of this incredible season, we sadly said goodbye to three exceptional Pacific Symphony musicians: Concertmaster Raymond Kobler, Principal Violist Robert Becker and French Horn player Russell Dicey. Ray served as Pacific Symphony’s concertmaster since 1999 and was a loyal and beloved leader of the Symphony. Also saying farewell was Bob Becker—who played his final concert on July 23, 2016 at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre after 33 years of service; together with Russ Dicey— who will continue as our librarian following 34 years in the orchestra. We thank them for their many years of extraordinary contributions.

On behalf of all of us at Pacific Symphony, we deeply appreciate your dedication to symphonic music and for your steadfast support of our efforts to keep music alive and accessible in Orange County. Musically yours,

Carl St.Clair Music Director

Thank you to all Pacific Symphony subscribers, donors, board, staff and volunteers for making this year such a success!

These three musicians—Keith Popejoy (horn), Jeanne Skrocki (violin) and Paul Zibits (bass)—enjoyed spending the morning at Anaheim’s Oak Canyon Nature Center, where sunlit trees and fresh air inspired their musical souls.
