The Royal Treatment Royal touches abound at Queens’ MarketPlace if you just know where to look.
ocated in picturesque Waikoloa, Queens’ MarketPlace is set next to palm-lined Anae-
hoomalu Bay, once home to an ancient Hawaiian fishing village and fishponds frequented by royals. Nearby sits King’s Trail, a historic petroglyph-rich lava pathway used by Hawaiian alii. The center’s name pays homage to Hawaii’s great monarchs— explore its entryway and you’ll find plaques celebrating several, including Queen Liliuokalani, Queen Kapiolani, Queen Emma and more. Even the center’s architecture offers royal nods. Its circular Coronation Pavilion was inspired by the Coronation Bandstand at Iolani Palace. Wander through the lush gardens and you’ll encounter beautiful hibiscus, the state flower, often seen as a symbol of royalty. See if you can spot all 10 varieties blooming throughout the grounds.

The Waikoloa Sour is a refreshing mix of Kuleana Huihui (house-blended white rum), aromatic bitters, Orgeat, lilikoi and pineapple rum, topped off with a Spanish sherry.
RUM’S HOUSE At the center’s newest eatery, Kuleana Rum Shack, the drinks, food and atmosphere are all about the local lifestyle. Its garage-style layout is an ode to driveway pau hana (after work) with friendly neighbors. Its Island flavors, including those in the raved about pipi kaula (marinated slow-dried short rib), come from recipes passed down from generation to generation. And its rum, made from 40 varieties of locally grown cane sugar, is the base for unforgettable cocktails.
WOOHOO BAMBOO Cozying up to Cariloha’s apparel and home goods, made from sublimely soft bamboo cotton, is like being hugged by a cloud of feathers. Stop by the newly opened shop to check out its just-released leisurewear for men and women, bedding (including duvets and weighted blankets) and Hawaii-exclusive tees adorned with marine life art by local creative Miyuki Akiyama.
Take Your Pick Family-owned Hawaiian Ukulele & Guitar strikes the right cord when it comes to educating customers about the history instruments. This allows customers to pick the perfect fit from its curated selection of guitars and ukulele. Take note of the shop’s in-house line, featuring designs created for all skill levels and made out of solid mahogany, golden acacia and mango woods.
Shirt Tales Reyn Spooner’s colorful history is built upon aloha shirts that emphasize Island life through eye-catching designs created by local artists. Cases in point, the storied brand’s recently released Diamond Lei and Orchid Bloom (at right, bottom) shirts, which feature lively Hawaiian flora, and its new Year of the Rat print (at right, top), which celebrates Chinese New Year.
