Home of the Spartans!

We are pace...

Partners • academics • catholic • empowerment

Principal’s Message As we enter Spring and we look to the future, we plan and we prepare. Our theme for the year is “We Are PACE!” This stands for Partners, Academics, Catholic, Empowerment. This is also our purpose, our reason for being. As partners, we work together towards one goal to meet the challenges of a global society. The academic programs offer a dynamic multidimensional curriculum which meets state, national and collegiate requirements for our diverse student population. We dedicate ourselves through the beliefs and teachings of the Catholic faith, to develop the moral, theological, and social responsibilities of our students so that they may improve their communities and create a better society. Through extensive academic, campus ministry, athletic and extracurricular programs, we empower our students to develop the innate and acquired abilities needed to succeed in a global society. This school year is an exciting one for the school. The accreditation team visited our campus in March. We are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council through AdvancED. Accreditation is a voluntary method of quality assurance developed more than 100 years ago by American universities and secondary schools. Accreditation engages the school community in meeting high quality standards, implementing a continuous improvement process, and engaging in quality assurance through internal and external review. Our commitment to accreditation assures you that our school continues to focus on raising student achievement, providing a safe and enriching Catholic learning environment, and maintaining an efficient and effective operation. As part of the process, we will be sending our alumni an e-mail asking for your opinions and your feedback. We want your input and will use it to continue to grow and to improve. We look forward to hearing from you. Yours in Christ, Ana Garcia Principal Class of 1980

Hall of Fame Inductee 2009 A tribute from David Hershberger

G

ary Patrick Hershberger was the third of six children, born August 6, 1950 in Johnstown, PA, to Royal and Jeanne Hershberger. In 1954, the family moved to Florida and arrived in Hialeah on July 4th. He attended Immaculate Conception Church and elementary school. He was an altar boy, then an usher as he grew older, and a member of the CYO. Gary did not have a problem with helping those in trouble, whether it be a friend or stranger who needed help. He chose to follow what he thought might be a calling to the priest hood and attended St John Vianney Seminary during his sophomore year of high school. He only attended that one year and realized he had another calling in life. He returned to Pace for his junior and senior years and graduated in June of 1968. Some time after graduation, Gary decided that he wanted to join the military and joined the Army. He took his basic training in South Carolina and almost didn’t get through boot camp. He struggled with the conditioning aspect but was finally able to complete the training and move on to advanced infantry training. After training, he was accepted into the tank corps and trained in Ft. Hood, Texas. There is a plaque in his honor on a tank at Ft. Hood as he was recognized by those who trained him as an inspiration to those who followed. Gary received his orders to go to Vietnam shortly after finishing tank training. He was able to be home that year for his 19th birthday, but ten days later he arrived in Vietnam. Unfortunately, his tour in Vietnam was short as he was killed Nov. 25th 1969. During his tour, his letters home spoke to the fact that he believed he had found what he was supposed to be doing by helping those

who were being oppressed. Even though his time in the country was short, he had managed to excel at what he did and influenced those who fought with him to be better. Gary came home a hero with the metals to prove it. He was decorated with a bronze star and three oak leaf clusters and the silver star with two oak leaf clusters for meritorious action in battle. The purple heart he received was for the last battle, the one he did not survive. November 25, 2009 marked the 40th anniversary of his death, and I am sure he would be proud to be recognized as someone his alma mater believes reflects the teachings and values they have been imparting on students for 48 years.

The Tradition Continues...

with the Robaina family and the Pidermann family Robaina Family

The name Robaina and Monsignor Pace seem to go hand in hand. Since their inaugural steps on campus in the late seventies to their children at Pace today, the Robainas have been active members of the Pace community for many years.

Robaina Family: Adrian 2012, Mercy 1981, Kevin 2009, and Harold

The family of four made up of Augie, Jimmy, Harold and Kathy (Rivero) have now doubled and have enrolled all eight of their kids at Pace. Stacy (‘04), Joel (’05), Janelle (’06), Steven (’07), Andrew (Rivero) (‘08), and Kevin (‘09) are all graduates while Adrian Robaina (Class of 2012) and Alex Rivero (Class of 2013) are current students. “It seemed like every year I had a new Robaina in my classroom,” says Ms. Victoria Spadafora, Department Chair for Social Studies . “These kids have all been incredible students and wonderful examples for our school and I truly enjoyed having them in my classroom.” Harold (’81), is the Executive Director of Major and Corporate Gifts at Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation. He has

been an active member of the Pace Board of Directors since 2005 and is also the Chairman of the schools Marketing Committee. With an extensive fundraising background, Harold was instrumental in the early fundraising efforts of the Dantee Navarro Religious Education Center and organizes the Annual Spartan Golf Classic and the Annual Domino Tournament. “I have fond memories of my days at Pace and today I am still friends with many of my classmates,” said Harold. “It’s amazing to see that many of my friends’ kids are now attending Pace alongside our kids. Pace is truly a special place and I’m always happy to get involved and support in any way I can.” Harold also formed the Proud Pace Parent Ambassador Program where he teaches and informs other parents about the true qualities of Pace High School and everything the school has to offer. These parents then volunteer at the Annual Open House and share this wealth of information with the incoming students and their parents thinking of attending Pace. “The program has been a great success and I’m overwhelmed at how many parents joined this group,” said Harold. “Not only are you learning more about your own school but you also have the opportunity to share this information with incoming families so that they can make an informed decision about enrolling their son or daughter at Pace High School.” Harold’s wife, Mercy (Gomez) Robaina, (Class of ’81) is VP and Branch Manager of BankUnited on Key Biscayne and is also an active volunteer.

Alumni Spotlight Eduardo “Eddie” Flor 2000

ith such a vast selection of accomplished and outstanding alumni, choosing an alumni spotlight is never a simple task, but when this alumnus received the honor of Pace’s 2010 Teacher of the Year award, also known as the Cervantes Outstanding Educator award, the choice seemed obvious. Eduardo Flor, Class of 2000, uses his experience and knowledge to teach students in multiple facets of school life. As a student, he showed leadership qualities and graphic design skills in activities he participated in, the Cervantes Outstanding Educator and after graduating in the spring of 2000, At Awards Ceremony. Eddie received his bachelors in Information Technology from American InterContinental University in 2004 and continued his education by earning a masters in Educational Administration from St. Thomas University this past fall. “I have a love for computers and a love of people,” he shares, “so I decided to join both things I enjoy by teaching people how to use them. It’s important to give back to the community that gave so much to me.” He has put his technology skills to use in the classroom and has served a Departmetn Head of the Computer Science Department Teaching was not Eddie’s first job here at Pace. He began working in the Advancement office, where he was the assistant to the Advancement Director. There, he worked on the school’s multiple publications: The Spartan Parent Newsletter, The Spartan Alumni Newsletter, and a variety of school promotional publications used throughout

“Whether it’s through time, talent or treasure, I encourage all parents to get involved with your kids’ school and education,” says Harold. “A helping hand is always welcome and it’s an excellent way to escape the everyday rush and spend some quality time with your sons’ or daughters’ activities.”

Pidermann Family

The Pidermann family shares a long history at Monsignor Edward Pace High School. Not only did the Pace alumni receive their Catholic education at Pace High School, but they continued their Catholic education at the university level. Martha Nobo attended Pace and had a moment in the spotlight as Prom Queen of 1980. She continued her education at Miami Dade Community College where she received her Associates in Arts, and then continued to receive a Bachelor in Marketing from St. Thomas University in 1987. The following year, she began her career as a teacher for Miami Dade Public Schools. Edward Pidermann was a member of the basketball team from 1976 – 1980. He attended Miami Dade Community College where he received his Associate in Arts, Associate in Science in Fire Science, and Associate in Science in Emergency Medical Services. He has been a firefighter for the City of Miami since 1985 where he currently serves as Chief Fire Officer.

Michelle Pidermann, daughter of Martha and Edward, attended Pace from 2001 – 2005. She was a cheerleader as well as a Danceline member. After high school, she pursued a degree in Communications from Florida State University. After receiving her bachelors in 2008, she began her law studies at St. Thomas University Law School. Her expected graduation date is 2012. Edward Pidermann, son of Martha and Edward, was a baseball star at Pace High School from 2006 – 2009. After a successful high school baseball career, he received a scholarship and is currently attending Barry University. His expected graduation date is 2013. Jennifer Pidermann, the youngest member of the Pace-Pidermann clan, is in her senior year at Pace High School. Since her freshman year, she has been a member of the Danceline team and proudly performs at every Pace event. The Pace family looks forward to her graduation this spring.

He has moderated/advised the Spartan Times Newspaper, the Torch yearbook, the Quill & Scroll Honor Society and the computer club. Under his direction, the Torch staff produced the first allcolor yearbook for Pace. Soon after, Eddie took on the challenge of becoming the Director of Student Activities. This job gave him the opportunity to work alongside administration, At the temple of Athena in Athens, Greece. He has also coordinated a 12-day Greece Study Abroad trip this past summer. To further his leadership role, Eddie teaches/moderates the Leadership class, a group of students who are in charge of running all campus activities and events via a business management type course. This staff has received recognition for a variety of accomplishments including raising over $75,000 from Sparta-Fest field day since its inception in 2007 and collecting the most platelets for the 2008-2009 school blood drives. As Eddie approaches his 10-year anniversary of working here at Pace, he continues to teach, inspire and promote Spartan spirit. The Drama club will be presenting “Thoroughly Modern Millie” this spring, April 13th-15th. Please contact Mrs. Pla-Guzman at cplaguzman@pacehs. com for event details and tickets. Congratulations on all of your success this year!

A Special Thank you

The Pace family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to Mr. Wayne Huizenga and the Huizenga Family Foundation. This foundation graciously donated $20 thousand to the drama club after students wrote letters asking for support. Thanks to this donation, the drama club has been able to put on exceptional performances with their new lighting & sound equipment.

SPORTS Update

The spartans are on fire

Evan Romero 2006 The writers of the Stanford Cardinal were singing praises for Evan Romero, class of 2006, who has gone above and beyond to prove himself as an all-star athlete. Despite all of the questions and doubts Stanford may have had, recruiting Romero seems to be not only the right choice, but the best choice for this volleyball team. Below is an article that was featured on Go Stanford – the Internet site for the Stanford Cardinal reporting on all things athletic.

Picture This: Romero’s a Star Stanford’s all-time kills leader keeps getting better

Feb. 11, 2010 STANFORD, Calif. - Back in 2006, Stanford’s recruitment of volleyball player Evan Romero had several potential flaws. Could a volleyball player with only three months of club experience excel in the big time? Would he be willing to leave his comfortable CubanAmerican roots and move across the country? And, most important of all, was he the right kid? That wasn’t a figurative question about Romero’s ability to fit into the Stanford program. Coach John Kosty literally did not know if he was recruiting the player he noticed at the Junior Olympic national tournament. When Romero’s club coach in Miami sent an e-mail to Stanford describing the player’s talent and outstanding academic work, Kosty remembered being impressed with a certain player on the South Florida club team. He just didn’t know if this scholarship request was for the same person. “Can you send us a picture?” Kosty requested. “We knew who we thought Evan Romero was,” Kosty said Wednesday. “I had a picture of Evan in my head. I just wanted to make sure the picture was him.” Kosty was relieved to find out it was. Now, Romero is a fouryear starter at opposite hitter and the school’s all-time leader in kills in the rally-scoring era (since 2001). As Stanford enters the heart of its men’s volleyball season, Romero leads the No. 5 Cardinal into a big home weekend, with a Friday match against No. 3 UCLA at Maples Pavilion and a Saturday match at Burnham Pavilion against defending NCAA champion UC Irvine. Each begins at 7 p.m. Stanford (5-3) has depended on Romero since his freshman year, when an admittedly “raw” and inexperienced player was immediately thrown into action and struggled as much as his team, which went 3-25. “I remember one game against Pepperdine, I was blocked maybe eight times,” Romero said. “I thought I was pretty much done. I was very frustrated.” Instead, Kosty looked at him and said, “Keep swinging.” The moment became a turning point for Romero, who realized his coaches were not going to lose in faith in him and were willing to give him the time he needed to reach his potential. In the meantime, Romero has continued to develop the volleyball skills that he lacked when he arrived at Stanford

from Monsignor Pace High School in Opa-locka, Fla., where the team’s strategy was, “throw the ball up real high and let him jump up and hit it,” in the words of Stanford assistant coach Ken Shibuya. Height (6-foot-5) and athleticism made Romero an intriguing prospect, not only for Stanford, but in high school. Romero was a basketball player until his junior varsity basketball coach, Altoine Williams - who doubled as the volleyball coach - convinced Romero to join the volleyball team. That was when it all started. At an age - as a high school sophomore - when many of his current teammates were perfecting their craft, Romero was just beginning his. He was competitive kid, fiery, a product of his environment, and a source of pride for his immigrant family. Maybe that’s why it all worked. In 1961, fewer than five years after Fidel Castro and his men landed on Cuban shores in a small boat to ignite the Cuban Revolution, Evan’s mother Iliana was among hundreds of thousands of Cubans to flee the country for the United States. She was 3 years old when her father, Rafael Arias, a salesman who would not have the opportunity to continue under the new regime, obtained a work visa through an American textile company to bring his family with him. Jesus Romero was 8 when he left Cuba in 1967 on one of the so-called “Freedom Flights,” the twice-daily 45-minute airlifts that transported 265,000 refugees from Cuba, to Miami from 1965-1973. With commercial flights between the two countries suspended after the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, U.S. President Lyndon Johnson negotiated for the transportation, which was granted to those Castro called “anti-revolutionaries.” By applying for inclusion, Jesus’ parents were branded as traitors and lost their jobs, as a cook and seamstress. They and other members of the extended family banded together and found work on family farms, and away from the taunts, for those who sought to leave Cuba. By the time they arrived in Miami, the Romeros had little money, few clothes and could not speak English. From these beginnings, Jesus and Iliana Romero each became CPAs, with Jesus now working as a financial analyst for Merrill Lynch. Evan Romero’s paternal grandfather died when Evan was young, but his grandmother, Esther Romero, became a second mother to him, picking up Evan every day from school from pre-school through his sophomore year in high school. Living in an insular Cuban-American community in Miami, she never learned English, and never needed to. Evan would speak to her in Spanish, gather memories and stories of the old country, and savor her Cuban faire of black beans and rice, fried plantains and roasted pork. Esther became Evan’s main lifeline to Cuba, a place he has never been, but takes great pride in representing. That’s because he understands the responsibility that comes with justifying the sacrifices of those before him.

“As I was growing up, my sister, Erika, and I had this silent role in mind that we knew how much our parents had worked,” he said. “We had to make sure to work just as much. “For me, to be at Stanford and my sister to attend University of Florida is a testament to the work our parents did. They both are role models. We know they put in a lot of hard work and so should we.” When it came time to leave for Stanford, his grandmother asked, in Spanish, “Why?” Evan was the first in his family to go away to school, and the first to leave the tightknit circle of relatives that had made a new life for itself on U.S. soil. The choice to leave was not easy, and was a major concern for the Stanford coaching staff. That’s when Al Roderigues, the everpositive longtime Stanford assistant coach, told Romero and his father on Evan’s recruiting trip, “Don’t worry you’ll have a fellow Hispanic with you at all times.” For the most part, that’s been true. Roderigues became something of an adoptive parent for the five members Romero’s volleyball class, driving them in vans on road trips and encouraging them to keep their heads up during that awful freshman season by creating the mantra of “Worst to First.” Roderigues, now battling stomach cancer, continues to be an inspiration to Romero and the team, who see this season as the chance to fulfill Big Al’s wish. For Romero, the path from volleyball apprentice to savant has been painful at times, but through the attention and patience of Kosty, Shibuya and Roderigues, that ability has been refined and fine-tuned. When Evan was freshman, Kosty made him arrive a halfhour early each day to throw a football. Romero had a loopy three-quarter arm swing and Kosty had noticed that top NFL quarterbacks passed with a short, explosive arm swing. That, and a high-release point, is what Kosty wanted Romero to develop. A better technique and aggressive play were pounded into Romero through what Shibuya calls a “crash course” in volleyball skills. For two years, the Stanford coaches did not teach Romero how to tip. “You can’t be a timid opposite,” Kosty told him. Only in the past two years has Romero added change of pace, and wider hitting range to his game, as well as improved blocking and digging, and deciphering the intentions of opponents through their body positioning. “To learn to be a volleyball player just takes a lot of time,” Kosty said. “And if he makes the decision to continue playing, he’s going to get better and better.” That would be fine with Romero, but he offers no hint of what his future holds. Graduate school? Pro volleyball? A return to Miami? But one thing is for sure: Kosty found the right kid indeed.

Pace’s accreditation visit

Since 1971 Monsignor Edward Pace High School has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and School (SACS) and since 2009 by the AdvancED (the parent organization of SACS). For the past 39 years the school has participated in an accreditation process of an internal and external review. School Accreditation engages the entire school community in a continuous process of self-evaluation, reflection, and improvement. It invites external scrutiny and welcomes the constructive feedback of peers. It demands rigor, is based in data, and approaches documentation of results with discipline. To earn accreditation, a school must meet the AdvancED standards, engage in continuous improvement, and demonstrate quality assurance through internal and

external review. The standards are based in the research on the factors that impact student achievement. The accreditation process helps schools bring together all the

parts of the school to improve student and organizational performance. For the past 18 months the school has been preparing for its five year accreditation visit. We have written a Standard Assessment Report, a School Improvement Plan, and prepared for a visiting team called the Quality Assurance Peer Review Team.

On March 28-30, 2010 a five member team visited our campus. The purpose of a Quality Assurance Review is to: evaluate the school’s adherence to the standards; assess the effectiveness of the s c h o o l ’s improvement efforts; review performance results and how those results are used to inform improvement efforts; provide high-quality feedback with clear recommendations and actionable next steps; and make an accreditation recommendation. We are very proud of all the work we have done and know the visit will be a great success. We will keep you posted. Once the accreditation process is complete you will be able to view our entire report and the report written by the visiting team.

Best All Around Athletes Invited to Aloha Prep Bowl Jonathan Ragoo and Zachary Soto (pictured below with Head Football Coach Alvin Slaughter 1992) were among the nation’s best all around athletes to be invited to the Aloha Prep Bowl on Saturday, December 12th. These students played on the second annual Aloha Prep Bowl’s Mainland team versus Hawaii. Football University, a camp for invitation-only high school football players, founded this event which invites only the those students who not only excel in sports but in academics as well. Congratulations to the only South Florida Catholic high school students invited to go!

The Writing Center

Monsignor Edward Pace High School has collaborated with St. Thomas University’s writing department to create a writing center for Pace’s students. Once a week, tutors from the University Writing Center at St. Thomas work in Pace’s brand new Writing Center to help tutor students in writing. The Writing Center has computers and other essential writing tools necessary to help students improve their skills. This program serves several purposes: students receive free help from college students, tutors gain experience working at a high school, and students gain a deeper understanding of the writing process, as well as what it means to work with peers. To celebrate writing, the University Writing Center staff invited Pace students to visit their center on October 20th, the day that the National Council of Teachers of English designated as the National Day on Writing (NDoW), and participate in various writing activities. They served food, drinks, and a creatively designed cake shaped in the initials NDOW. Students had the opportunity to read their published works out loud from Pace’s new gallery of writing – Spartan Café. Pace High School is very fortunate to have such a strong relationship with St. Thomas University, and the addition of this center will only strengthen the ties.

the pace anglers make history The first Spartan Anglers Fishing Tournament was held on August 29th in Islamorada, FL. The event was hosted by the Pace Advancement Office and the Pace Anglers club in order to raise money for the school and club as well as bring the Pace Family together for a lot of fun down in the Florida Keys. Sixty participants including Pace faculty, administrators, parents, students and alumni came together for a great time! The event included a captains meeting in the library at Pace two nights before the tournament. Six inshore teams and six offshore teams fished in the tournament and targeted species that would earn them the most points. After a day of fishing everyone gathered for a Barbecue, awards presentation and raffle. The event was a big success thanks to our participants, six fishing guides and over twenty sponsors! The 2nd Annual Spartan Anglers Fishing Tournament will be held in July 2010.

A special thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Pat and Glenda Kelley for providing the barbeque, awards, and raffle location, and to WaterMark Marina for providing the fishing location. For more information about the tournament, the club or the guides and sponsors please visit the club website at: www. paceanglersclub.com or email Scott Giberson at: sgiberson@ pacehs.com.

Haiti Relief Efforts Pace has worked hard with Haitian relief efforts since the tragic earthquake. Faculty and students joined forces to collect food, shipping supplies, and monetary donations to send to Haiti. Donation boxes were placed in every classroom, and each morning, students made sure to fill those boxes with anything they could. Parents made generous donations as well, and Pace partnered with Amor en Accion to work twice as hard in making sure all the donations were put into the right hands. Campus Ministry dedicated Catholic School’s Week to helping Haiti, and the final day of the week, SpartaFest, donated half its proceeds to Haiti. The wrestling team also joined in relief efforts by selling wrestling t-shirts and donating part of the funds raised. The hard work doesn’t end here. Pace will continue to help with donations as part of its mission to help its brothers and sisters around the world.

IN MEMORIAM: Personal Reflections on the Life and Death of Fr. Cyril J. Smith By Luis Segio Hernandez, Jr.

“Before all else, dear brothers, love God and then your neighbor, because these are the chief commandments given to us.” These are the first words of purpose given to those who would choose to live in harmony according to The Rule of St. Augustine. There is no doubt that Fr. Cyril J. Smith loved God, and by his example, he made Christ’s love visible to all of us – his neighbors – at our beloved Pace community. There are a plethora of great and beautiful things that can be (and have been) said about Fr. Smith. At his vigil and mass, fellow Augustinians, clergy, as well as faculty and colleagues from Pace, all reminded us how much Fr. Smith has meant to us and to the life of our Church and school. Mr. George Rodriguez cloaked Fr. Smith in a series of words as fitting as they were moving and poignantly proclaimed what we all know in our hearts to be true – that Fr. Smith was “a model priest.” Likewise, Mr. Les Brown reminded us that as an adept administrator, Fr. Smith wanted to run Pace on a different time from the rest of the world – in both a concrete as well as metaphysical sense. As a former pupil, I hope to join in this chorus of praise and thanksgiving that Papa Smurf, as so many of us affectionately called him, so duly merited by providing a few vignettes from a student’s humble perspective. As an Augustinian, Fr. Smith lived a life of both contemplation and action – for as the Bishop of Hippo clearly set forth in The City of God, “the active part having reference to the conduct of life, that is, to the regulation of morals, and the contemplative part to the investigation into the causes of nature and into pure truth.” Intellectually, he combined his studies in theology and philosophy with graduate studies in biology. In practice, Fr. Smith served as both a priest and an educator, and he blended these two roles seamlessly throughout his entire ministry, which lasted over half a century. Yet, as if that was not enough, Fr. Smith dared to do one of the most remarkable things I have ever witnessed – he lived the truth. Living the truth is serious business, but perchance what endeared Fr. Smith to all of us even more is the fact that he never took himself too seriously. One of my fondest memories of Fr. Smith is indeed one that brought much laughter to the entire Biology course he taught our sophomore year. We were studying the structural and functional properties of living organisms, namely the cell, and the specific tail-like projections that extend from them known as cilia. Fr. Smith had a gift for bringing the subject of science to life, and as he stood against the dark greenishblack chalkboard he lifted his hand up to the board and began to mimic the sweeping motion of cilia by wiggling his index finger. Instantly, the class bursts into giggles, chuckles, and uncontrollable laughter. Fr. Smith managed to perform a small miracle that day, in bringing the class back into decorum, yet he did so while smiling with us. In fact, I don’t think I ever saw Fr. Smith get visibly mad, irritated, or angry – that was simply not his style. He was compassionate, understanding, helpful, polite, cheerful, and had a wonderful sense of humor. One of my favorite photographs with Fr. Smith was taken across the fence at a final National Honor Society event we held at St. Thomas University. In the middle are fellow classmates, Arelis, Betty, and Poly, each holding a yellow rose. As someone snapped the photograph, Papa Smurf and I could not help but be silly – we each took the picture while biting down on our respective roses. They say that patience is a virtue, and indeed Fr. Smith was a virtuous man. In addition to his teaching, Fr. Smith also impacted the lives of many students outside of the classroom – whether through campus ministry, Boy’s State, or the Optimist Oratorical contests. I was fortunate to have participated in all three, and my heart is filled with gratitude for the generosity of Fr. Smith’s selfless devotion of his time and talent. In fact, as we would meet to help prepare me for the Optimist Oratorical competitions, Fr. Smith and I had our own sort of friendly ongoing battle – a hand-gesturing tug-of-war if you will. I suffered from the innate disposition of having been born half-Cuban and half-Puerto Rican, and thusly felt compelled to move my hands excessively

while speaking. Fr. Smith knew that in proper oratory, excessive hand movements could be distracting. It was a delicate balance, if my hands became tied up I could risk becoming speechless (the rumors you may have heard about Latinos are true) and, if I moved my hands too much I would risk distracting the judges (and that could cost you points). He patiently taught me to hold my hands at the center, and to strategically make small gestures to accentuate my message. We had found a happy medium, and yet again, Fr. Smith had somehow managed to work another small miracle. St. Augustine once expressed that “patience is the companion of wisdom,” and Fr. Smith was a very wise man. When it came to the optimist contests, he brilliantly employed a divide and conquer methodology. Rather than sending all his students to compete at the same Optimist Club, he would divide us up and send each of us to a different Club. As we would advance, we may eventually have to compete against each other, but at least we would all not eliminate ourselves at the first round. As I competed at the Miramar Club and advanced to the Zone round in 1994, Fr. Smith was unable to join me as he was unfortunately hospitalized. However, his reputation had so preceded him that the Optimist Representative, Angel Arroyo, even acknowledged all the great work Fr. Smith had done for students at that time. In 1995, as we moved North advancing from the Club and Zone levels to compete at the Regionals, Fr. Smith was in better health and there by my side. I received second place at that level, and hence was not able to make it to the final District level competitions. I had lost before in years past, but for the first time there was something that just did not feel right. For the first time, I suspected either a racial or unfair bias had affected the judging. The much younger boy that won had literally quoted much of the Robert Frost poem, “The Road Not Taken.” Ironically, I had also quoted from that same poem in my speech but only the closing line. I wondered: “How could you call something a speech when so much of the time is taken to reciting an entire poem?” As I left with my family, there was Fr. Smith by our side. I do not remember the exact words he said to console me, but I know that he knew, and that was good enough for me. It is true that Fr. Smith was a teacher and mentor, but before he ever walked into a classroom, he already taught us countless invaluable lessons by the sheer force of his quiet example. Fr. Smith cared deeply about all his students, and any of his former students can attest to the fact that Fr. Smith was always present to support us at our events. I know that Fr. Smith always came to our Drama productions and quietly sat in the back. What I only learned recently was how in his own youth, he loved to perform himself. Fr. Smith was so modest, that in all our conversations, it never even came up. What did come up in a lot of our conversations was what perchance at his core drove him the most – his concern for our spiritual formation. When Fr. Smith learned that I was going to Washington DC with the Close Up program my Senior year, he shared with me how he was ordained a priest in the crypt church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Naturally, while I was there, I went down into the crypt in honor of Fr. Smith to see the church where he had become a priest some 42 years before. A decade later, as I was back in DC working on Capitol Hill, I would often frequent the Shrine to attend mass at the Crypt Church in Spanish, and Fr. Smith was very much in my thoughts and prayers. This past year, my friend Lorenzo Cobiella and I were attending a law-related dinner at St. Thomas University when we noticed the lights were shining bright at Pace High for this year’s Homecoming game. As we approached Fr. Smith, I wiggled my index finger and asked him if he remembered our Biology class and cilia. Fr. Smith smiled and laughed. We talked about the latest student who had approached him for advice regarding the Optimist Oratorical Contest – his students were ever present in his mind. As the floats and convertibles passed, the students cheered “Fr. Smith” and waved at him. And there again, Fr. Smith who never missed an opportunity to support his students smiled

and waived back at them. It was the last time that I would get to speak in person with Fr. Smith. On that fateful Friday, I was deeply saddened as I heard of the news of the passing of our beloved Fr. Smith. Earlier that morning, while watching Walter Cronkite’s Funeral Service on CNN, one particular passage stuck with me from the reading of Paul’s Letter to the Romans. I felt it was unusual that a particular phrase would stick with me off the television set, but after hearing the sad news of Fr. Smith a few hours later, something juxtaposing the two clicked within me. I called St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York, to inquire about the passage. It was Romans 12:9-21. As I looked for the text, I could not find the right interpretation that I had previously heard. Then it occurred to me, as an Episcopal church, they quote from the Book of Common Prayers. Alas, I found the right translation, and as I began reading, I was struck by the heading to the passage: “Marks of the True Christian.” Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all… Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. These words from Paul’s epistle summed up Fr. Smith’s life so beautifully, for indeed he was a “True Christian.” In the early 5th century, Augustine of Hippo wrote “The City of God,” one of the classics of Western thought, philosophy, and religion, to restore confidence in his fellow Christians following the sacking of Rome. In our lifetime, as we have witnessed some difficult times in our own church, we too long for a restored confidence in our faith. Some 1,599 years later, a fellow Augustinian by the name of Fr. Smith was that beacon of light calling us to God. We may never fully know how many lives and students he positively impacted, but I do know that a piece of Fr. Smith will forever live in my heart – and my faith and love of God will be forever stronger because of him. Witnessing the outpouring of love and appreciation for Fr. Smith from our community, I know that I am not alone. Together, let’s rededicate ourselves to that which would please Fr. Smith more than anything and become, within our selves, visible expressions of Christ’s love for our neighbors. Today, my hands are not moving but are folded in prayer while it is my heart, which stirs and moves in praise to God for you. I know you are up there in heaven with our Creator and smiling Fr. Smith, for you have won the most important tug-of-war in life – that between good and evil. Thank you Fr. Smith. Thank you for your life and for your example, and for the blessing you have been to all of us. You are so dearly missed, and we love you.

our Players had a GREAT time

THANK YOU to all those that participated in the Annual Spartan Domino Tournament! Through your support and generosity, we were able to raise funds for the Monsignor Edward Pace High School Student Endowment Fund. This fund was created to help students who encounter extreme financial hardship while attending Pace High School. Thanks to our sponsors, alumni and friends, the event was a great success and all who participated enjoyed a wonderful evening that included domino games, a grand raffle, music, food, and drinks. This year our main sponsors were J & J Specialty Products, !Que Barato!, Bacardi, Quality Air Craft, the Berrios Family, Vicky Bakery, Presidente Beer, Walmart, Target, Havana 1959 Cigar Co., Law Offices of John Rodriguez, Mr. and Mrs. Armando Hernandez, and the Rivero Family. Special thanks to the Domino Tournament Committee for their constant support! Congratulations to Fernando Gomez (Pace parent) and his guest, Alex Rodriguez, for winning First Place in the Domino Tournament. The runner up team was made up of Jorge Lorenzo (Pace Alumni parent) and Juan Carlos Peña (Pace parent). The teams battled each other in a very exciting game for the Champion’s Trophy. We look forward to your participation in the next Domino Tournament taking place September 2010 as we strive to make this annual event bigger and better.
