2016 –2017 ANNUAL REPORT

On a March 2017 Isdell Center for Global Leadership (ICGL) study tour, students take a lunch break amidst volcanic ash on Chile's Pichi Llancahue Glacier. One of Villarrica National Park's three active volcanoes smokes in the background.

Dear Friends, As I reflect on my first year as chair of the Pace Academy Board of Trustees, I feel grateful to be part of the incredibly caring and supportive Pace Academy community. This past year the members of the Pace community came together in an inspiring way to support one another and make our school an even better place for our students and families. In the fall, our Pace family faced the challenge of beginning school without two members of the Class of 2017. Our community bonded together to honor them and support each other, and propelled the school to have 2016–2017 be one of the strongest years in our history. Each division saw change and growth: Syreeta Mosely led the Lower School’s tireless work to refresh its curriculum and character education; our Middle School celebrated retiring head of school John Anderson while welcoming the new leadership of Graham Anthony; and Mike Gannon’s leadership underpinned a remarkably successful year for our Upper School, with seniors from the closeknit Class of 2017 earning the reputation as one of the most accomplished classes in Pace history. Professionally, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to help great companies become even better. I feel even more fortunate to be a part of our school community that has that same opportunity. What all of you are doing to improve the school, by giving time, energy and financial resources, is making an amazing difference. Firmly positioned as one of the best schools in Atlanta, Pace is now becoming one of the most forward-thinking, globally minded schools in the country. We are demonstrating our courage to strive for excellence while pursuing strategic goals that are our own—tailored to the interests and needs of our Pace family. We are well on our way to achieving the goals we created together in our 2016–2021 Strategic Plan (found under “About” on paceacademy.org’s home page). Our progress is the direct result of you: our involved and supportive community. On a personal level, I am grateful for the difference Pace has made for our family. Our children are all very different, and Pace has met their unique needs academically and beyond. Our son Grant arrived in fifth grade after addressing his dyslexia, and Pace helped him develop into his full potential as a student and leader. Our three daughters came in pre-first, and Pace has helped each develop uniquely. Hannah found her homes in athletics and yearbook. Morgan found her passions in drama and a year abroad in Italy during her junior year. Julia is both an artist and an athlete, and is finding homes in both as a member of the Class of 2020. Our older three have all graduated now, with fond memories and great appreciation for Pace, and have gone on to the colleges of their dreams. Their development gives us even more appreciation and energy to continue to give back. We cannot thank you enough for all you give, with your tireless support and endless generosity— making all that is Pace Academy possible. Thank you for allowing us to dream big, and to turn these dreams into reality for our children. Sincerely,

Greg Kelly Chair, Board of Trustees

Dear Pace Family, In every family there are times that call for celebration and times that call for reflection and resilience. This was certainly the case for our Pace Academy family during the 2016–2017 school year. As the year began, I saw our school community unite in ways I hadn’t seen before. The faculty, staff and administration came together with sensitivity and compassion as it shepherded the Class of 2017 into a new school year following the unexpected losses of two of its members. The year presented us an opportunity to think deeply about what matters most in a school, and to ensure that Pace Academy is providing holistic support to our students. Our Mental Wellness Task Force began work to do just that: taking the temperature of the student body and finding that so much is right—yet also identifying opportunities for enriching programming to promote the overall well-being of our students. Through the course of the year, our student body demonstrated a remarkable spirit and resilience— in so many ways—time after time giving our Pace family reason to be proud and cause to celebrate. Our Upper School students excelled academically, and we celebrated the Class of 2017 as one of Pace’s most successful. Pace scholars also found time for service, participating in the Covenant House Sleep-Out, raising $20,000 for homelessness, and walking for suicide prevention in Atlanta’s Out of Darkness walk, raising $17,000, the most of any team. The thespian Knights ushered in a Pace-style “Shakespeare in the Park,” performing A Midsummer Night’s Dream in our outdoor gardens. Our Lower School Knights were K–5 chess tournament champions, while our second-graders performed “Singin’ in the Rain” before proud audiences. With its move from Class AA to AAA, athletics embraced a new level of competition with tenacity and enthusiasm, giving us more reasons to celebrate. For the first time, both boys’ and girls’ soccer teams advanced to the state finals; the volleyball Knights also advanced to state; and the boys’ basketball team persevered, claiming the state title for the second year in a row. In the spring, Auction guests celebrated retiring Middle School head John Anderson for 12 dedicated years, wishing him farewell in high style at the Georgia Aquarium. John and I began at Pace the same day, and over the years I watched him build an exceptional, supportive middle school culture—one that will be furthered by the team he cultivated and his capable successor, Graham Anthony. Our remarkable year, marked by deep sadness, yet also by success and celebration, would not have been possible without the support of our generous Pace community. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you. The 2016–2017 Annual Report is for you, in recognition of all you do— and in celebration of you. Sincerely,

Fred Assaf Head of School

Dear Friends, I sometimes hear first-time visitors to Pace Academy calling it Hogwarts. With our beautiful Arthur M. Blank Family Upper School and gardens, I can understand why. There is so much beauty at Pace; yet, what’s even more remarkable to me is what you can’t see: the generous spirit of our community, central to all things Pace. Seeing this spirit—your spirit—demonstrated through your untold contributions of time and endless generosity makes me incredibly proud. In my position, I’m able to see how your commitment has built our community, and how it continues to strengthen over the course of every year. As the parent of twin eighth-grade daughters (yes, identical) and a first-grade son, I’m grateful in so many ways to you—our volunteers and supporters—for the part you’ve played in building our small school into an innovative, globally focused environment where our children can learn, grow and thrive, both in and out of the classroom. The 2016–2017 school year gave our Pace family so many reasons to be proud. To name just a few: • The Pace Fund, our school’s most vital annual philanthropic initiative, exceeded previous records, with contributions nearing $2 million and more importantly, 87 percent of families— and 92 percent of new families—participating. • Our hardworking parent organizations, the Arts Alliance, Booster Club and Parents Club, contributed countless volunteer hours and raised funds to enrich the life of our school. Of note was the Parents Club’s spectacular Auction & Gala at the Georgia Aquarium, providing funding for programs such as travel grants for students going on Isdell Center for Global Leadership study tours. • Addressing our shared experience of loss, the Class of 2017 and interested Pace families established the Mental Health Fund to ensure no Pace student is prevented from accessing professional psychiatric support because of limited resources. • Leadership Pace, in its second year, hosted 16 alumni across the generations for a twoday deep dive into the school’s operations, management and future plans, facilitating new connections among participants and renewing their engagement with the school. The Annual Report provides an opportunity to recognize our accomplishments and to celebrate you, a member of our valued community—of current and former parents, alumni, faculty and staff, grandparents, neighbors and friends—for your engagement and the countless ways you give support, every day enriching Pace Academy. Our school would not be the same without you. With heartfelt thanks,

Heather White Director of Advancement

EACH GIFT from our family of parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends enhances the student experience and preserves the dynamic community life that defines Pace Academy. Collectively, on an annual basis, your charitable contributions to The Pace Fund support faculty development, program budgets, campus maintenance, need-based financial aid and more—recurring expenses that would otherwise demand increased tuition. During 2016–2017, all members of the Pace Board of Trustees, 89 percent of the Pace faculty and staff and 87 percent of Pace parents contributed an incredible $1,920,000 to The Pace Fund. With these gifts, Pace provides rich classroom experiences, talented teachers, outstanding faculty enrichment opportunities, and exceptional academic, art and athletic programs for our students.

ALUMNI The percentages listed below represent each alumni class year’s participation.

I am forever grateful for my Pace experience—one of my most cherished assets. Pace gave me lifelong friends, a nurturing community and a dynamic educational foundation. The least I can do is give back. While I wish I could contribute much more, the act of giving every year as an alumnus, in any amount, is powerful. It sends a message to everyone beyond the Castle that we have a bright future that they should want to be a part of. HAYNES ROBERTS ’96

CONSECUTIVE GIVING My two youngest sisters, Robyn and Lindsey; my youngest daughter, Lindsey; my nephew, Fulton; and a second cousin, Juliana, all have earned diplomas from Pace. The oldest graduated in 1978 and the most recent in 2015. The rewards of a Pace diploma are clear, but the personal support and kindness shown by the school are just two of the intangibles that made Pace a unique school for my family. I also realize that my family’s situation is not unique and countless others have received the same generous multi-layered support. Experiencing directly how Pace contributes to families, I give back to help ensure that current and future families can benefit from the Pace experience as my family has.

Dear Friends, In 2016–2017, the Pace Academy Alumni Association continued to gain momentum in alumni engagement as it pursued a wide range of endeavors in coordination with our school’s administration and volunteer leadership. My thanks goes out to all Pace alumni—each one of us plays an integral role in developing Pace’s ever-growing status as a leader, locally and beyond. Our newest members from the Class 2017 brought Alumni Association membership to 3,642. We applaud this accomplished graduating class, which raised the bar for excellence at Pace to a very high level. It’s exciting that the next decade will add more than 1,200 new alumni; our valuable Pace network will continue to grow and strengthen. During the year, more of our alumni and family members than ever before attended school and alumni events, many on campus, thanks to the remarkable Arthur M. Blank Family Upper School. (Please contact the Office of Alumni Relations if you are interested in scheduling a tour.) In particular, the fourth annual Knight Cap, a springtime bourbon and wine tasting at Chastain Horse Park, brought more than 250 alumni, spouses, administrators and faculty together, raising more than $31,000 for need-based student financial aid. Thanks to all attendees and sponsors for helping Pace ensure access and equity for every member of the student body. It is especially exciting to see how we are growing as a cohesive, strategic and action-minded group. Leadership Pace, in its second year, brought a diverse group of 16 alumni back to campus for a two-day retreat, offering participants behind-the-scenes access to the school’s leadership and operations. After discussing the topics and challenges most relevant to Pace today, the class developed recommendations for the Board of Trustees. This initiative is preparing alumni to engage with the school in meaningful ways and to take on leadership opportunities in shaping Pace for the next generation. The fledgling Leadership Pace session produced impressive outcomes, and I highly encourage alumni to apply to participate in coming years. Finally, I offer my sincere appreciation to all of the members of the Pace Academy staff, Alumni Association Board, class delegates, Homecoming & Reunion committee, Knight Cap committee, event volunteers and alumni speakers for their ongoing service to the Alumni Association. I especially want to thank donors to The Alumni Fund, which supports need-based student financial aid, and to recognize the Class of 1994, winner of the Spirit Week Challenge with 51 percent participation. Alumni support broke a new record, with total donations of nearly $139,000! Your generosity, at any level, makes a significant impact on the Pace community. It has been an honor to serve as the Alumni Association president, and I look forward to seeing you on campus or at an alumni event in the near future. Sincerely,

Charley Brickley ’88 President, Pace Academy Alumni Association

ALUMNI SCHOLAR AWARD

THE PACE ACADEMY Alumni Scholar Award Committee was proud to present the 2017 Alumni Scholar Award to junior JEB CARTER (pictured, right). Carter is an avid thespian who spends most of his time in the Pace theatre program and has performed in every Pace production since coming to Pace in the sixth grade. While he devotes much of his time to theatre, he also approaches all other areas of his life with great passion and enthusiasm. He is an avid participant in Model UN, a tenor section leader in chorus and a Pace Ambassador. In addition to these, Carter is a member of Pace Academy Student Support (PASS) and a member of the Pace a capella groups. During his summers, he lifeguards and volunteers as a children’s clinic instructor at a tennis facility. With a keen interest in math and sciences, he plans to pursue electrical and mechanical engineering in the future. The Alumni Scholar Award is presented annually to a rising senior who embodies Pace’s values of high moral character, academic achievement, leadership and service, thereby enriching the school community as a whole.

In 2015, under the leadership of Trustee and Alumni Scholar Award Committee member John Inman ’83, the committee redefined the award, now regarded as one of Pace’s most prestigious honors. Today, a scholarship of $10,000 is applied to the winner’s senior-year tuition.

THE CLASS OF 2017 GIFT TO PACE ACADEMY

“THE CLASS OF 2017 has decided to make our senior gift to Pace Academy a donation to the Pace Academy Mental Health Fund. We believe that there should be nothing standing in the way of any student going to receive help and know that this gift will hopefully create a support system for all students in distress. The goal of the Mental Health Fund is to remove barriers to Pace students needing urgent psychiatric care beyond on-campus services provided. The Mental Health Fund will cover the cost of psychiatric care for any student in crisis who needs help and does not have the financial capacity to seek treatment. Any funding requests for services will remain strictly confidential and the fund is available to any Pace student.”

Prashanth Kumar Class of 2017 President

THE PARENTS CLUB THROUGH PACE ACADEMY’S active Parents Club, parents can connect with others and engage in the life of the school. Parents find a wide range of opportunities to volunteer through its numerous committees, activities and fundraising initiatives, all of which serve to enhance the school community. Its successful annual events, including the Fall Fair and Auction & Gala, fund requests from teachers and administrators for projects that enrich the Pace experience. The Parents Club’s funding of the Citizens of the World Travel Grant Program has had a particular impact in recent years. This grant is given annually to make Pace’s Isdell Center for Global Leadership (ICGL) study tours more affordable to all Pace students by providing airfare, once in Middle School and once in Upper School. In the 2016–2017 school year, 70 percent of nearly 200 students participating in the study tours used the travel grant for airfare.

BOOSTER CLUB IN THE 2016–2017 school year, Pace Academy teams began competing in the Georgia High School Association’s (GHSA) Class AAA, a move up from Class AA. Although Pace is the division’s smallest school, our student-athletes were undaunted by the challenge. The boys varsity basketball team prevailed over a talented rival, winning a hard-fought state championship. We were also proud to have state runner-up teams in girls volleyball, boys tennis, and boys and girls soccer. A total of 16 varsity teams qualified for the state playoffs, with six contending for state titles. Further, multiple studentathletes succeeded at the state level in swimming, cross-country, wrestling, and track and field. Pace finished fourth out of the 58 schools in the GHSA AAA Region Directors Cup, which recognizes the combined achievements of all varsity athletic teams. Through membership and sponsorship of events such as the Pace Race, the Booster Club supports and enhances Pace Athletics with equipment, facilities improvements and services not covered by the school’s annual operating budget. Booster Club members work to create opportunities to involve our community and enhance school spirit. During the 2016–2017 school year, the Booster Club funded the final phase of the weightroom renovation, a space utilized by almost every student through physical education class or team sports. Booster Club funds were also used to install fence screens around the tennis courts, add signage to Walsh Field, purchase tickets for students to attend state-playoff games, help pay for videography for teams and coaches to use as teaching tools and enrich Pace Athletics in innumerable other ways.

A RT S A L L IA NCE EXECU T IV E OF F ICERS

A RT S A L L IA NCE DIV IS ION REPRES ENTAT IV ES

WITH THE SUPPORT of the Pace Academy Arts Alliance and tremendous faculty leadership, more than 80 percent of Middle School students and 85 percent of Upper School students pursue artistic endeavors. In 2016–2017, 154 Middle School students participated in band, chorus or strings, and in the Upper School, 58 played in the band and 38 played in the orchestra, while 41 students sang in the chorus. Every year Pace thespians play to packed houses, while Lower School musicians entertain classmates at morning performances and lunchtime concerts. Our student-artists are often recognized for their talents; in 2017, students received 43 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and a Pace student claimed the girls solo state title in the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Literary Meet.

GEORGIA TAX CREDIT AT PACE ACADEMY, we believe all students deserve an outstanding education regardless of a family’s financial situation. By participating in the Georgia Private School Tax Credit Program, we can obtain funding to supplement the financial aid we have available to offer enrolling students. The tax credit program, established in Georgia in 2008, enables couples, individuals and businesses to reallocate a portion of their Georgia state taxes to financial aid at independent schools of their choice. Funds are awarded to students starting at Pace in Pre-First or first grades or matriculating to Pace from public schools in any grade. Funds are assigned based on a family’s demonstrated financial need. In 2017, 422 members of the Pace community of parents, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, faculty and staff, and other friends of the school participated in the program, reallocating more than $760,000 to allow highachieving students to attend Pace.

2016–2017 ENDOWMENT DONORS

ENDOWMENTS THE PACE ACADEMY Endowment is a pool of funds, restricted and unrestricted, that continues in perpetuity, thereby forming the monetary basis on which the school can grow and flourish. The principal of the Pace Academy Endowment is invested for future earnings, providing a stream of income to support current needs. Gifts to the Pace Academy Endowment represent a lasting belief in the school’s mission, and can provide a tribute in honor or memory of individuals or loved ones. Over the years, many families and foundations have established a variety of endowment funds for purposes that enhance student and faculty experiences through scholarship, fellowship and financial assistance, programmatic advances, and special awards. We are grateful to these generous donors for their foresight and thoughtfulness in making gifts of permanence in areas crucial to Pace Academy’s future.
