When one thinks of Stellenbosch landmarks, it’s mainly Cape Dutch gables, ancient oak trees and whitewashed university buildings that spring to mind. Yet one of the most eye-catching and talked about buildings in the Boland town is not one of its historic landmarks – it’s a private residence on the slopes of Stellenboschberg, built only 50 years ago. De Hoge Hoek is an example of one man’s love of wood, and was described by one architect as “the most beautiful house in the most beautiful town in the most beautiful corner of the world”. This unique
and sometimes controversial home has now come onto the market through Pam Golding Properties, priced at R6,9 million. The name “De Hoge Hoek” is Dutch for “the high peak” – a name reflecting both the property’s elevated location and its unusual hyperbolic paraboloid roof design. The home’s story begins in the late 1950s, when Dutch timber merchant and sailing enthusiast Kees Bruynzeel moved to South Africa. He wished to construct a home demonstrating the possibilities of building with wood, and hired a rising star from a leading Dutch architectural practice, Aart Bijl, to realise

his vision. Bijl and his mentor Pius Pahl were both followers of the Bauhaus tradition, known for its clean straight lines and integration of form and function. The young architect both incorporated and exceeded this tradition as he designed the new Stellenbosch home from the roof down – using teak rafters and yellow wood ceilings to create the unique saddle-shaped sweep. The roof never rests directly on the walls, but rather on the home’s massive windows, and has space to move under pressure from inclement weather. The home’s walls were designed on a slight slope of just three degrees, creating elegant lines with a finish of face brick, using custom-made extra-slim bricks. The home is noted for the high quality of workmanship, with finishes including teak panels, moulded plaster ceilings in the bedrooms, and huge expanses of glass set in teak frames. The unique roof design means that some corners of the home enjoy a ceiling height of up to 6 m, while the large windows frame magnificent views towards the Simonsberg, Stellenboschberg and even the back slopes of Table Mountain. On completion in 1962, this supermodern design met with mixed reaction from the local community – it outraged some and delighted others, most notably engineers and creatives. And it has remained a talking point ever since.
On both levels of De Hoge Hoek, several rooms have sliding doors open ing into the garden, which includes a large saltwaterchlorinated pool measuring 4 x 10 metres. De Hoge Hoek occupies a plot of just over 2 100 m² and has its entrance on the upper level, leading into a mainly open-plan living space with a formal lounge, dining room and study, a modern kitchen and a small mezzanine library or family room. The lower level contains the sleeping quarters, with a master bedroom suite and two additional bedrooms, as well as a family bathroom, linen room, wine cellar and several storage rooms. A double garage and off-street parking area are also located on this level.
On both levels of the home, several rooms have sliding doors opening into the wonderful garden with its large saltwater-chlorinated pool while two of the bedrooms open into the more private inner garden. An annex to the main building includes a laundry and small guest suite or staff quarters. The property is located in the suburb of Welgelegen. When it comes to selling your property, do you list with your friend, or not? Can your friend sell your property? Probably. You could even sell your property yourself. However, you need to consider whether you just want to sell your property, or you want to sell for maximum price. There is a big difference – and it can mean tens, if not hundreds of thousands of rands to you. For most property owners, their property represents a significant part of their net worth. It doesn’t really make sense to sell for less than you deserve, does it? Anyone will buy a bargain. If you stuck a board outside your property saying “For sale at 15% below market
value” you are bound to get interest, and you would sell in no time at all. But, if you want to sell for full market value then more is needed. A really good agent will be able to help you achieve maximum price. How do they do this? It’s a combination of print advertising, electronic and website marketing, and use of technology, that will ensure your property is exposed to a wide buyer audience. Your top agents will also have access to a database of buyers they are already working with. For example, at Harcourts Platinum when we take a new listing we match it to our database of over 3 000 buyers. These buyers are targeted as they have already indicated what they are looking for.
They are invited to view the property, very often even before the first adverts appear. Often we will have a group of different buyers viewing the property at the same time. When a property enjoys massive marketing and buyer competition then buyers are motivated to make their best offer – not just any offer. That’s the difference between just selling your property and selling it for what it’s worth. When interviewing agents in your selection process, be sure to enquire what they will do to market your home to ensure it stands out and appeals to a wide buyer audience. Find out if they have

access to a buyer database, and how they use technology to access these buyers. When you’ve compared estate agents, select the one you believe will do the best job for you and help you achieve full market value. If, however, they don’t, then you may find yourself selling for less than you need to – and this could put unnecessary strain on a good friendship. Skilled, calm Alex wins Ford Ranger Odyssey expedition QUICKPIC Ford South Africa announced the winner of the inaugural Ranger Odyssey Africa during a special event held in Hartbeespoort today. Alex Cruickshanks (28), from Randpark Ridge, beat out nine other hopefuls to the ultimate prize: a fully accessorised Odyssey-edition Ranger Double Cab 3.2 XLT M/T 4x4. Alex, who works as a management consultant, used his sporting prowess as a multiple SA rowing champion to his advantage during the gruelling 22-day cross-Africa expedition that saw 10 specially selected contestants take on six countries and 7 860 km of some of the continent’s toughest and most beautiful terrain. Throughout the Ranger Odyssey, which navigated its way from Nairobi in Kenya, through Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, Mozambique and finally back into South Africa, the participants were evaluated on a number of different criteria by the group of judges, which was made up of the expedition leader and the driving instructors, as well as a media specialist, who had first-hand experience of each of the contestants every day. The criteria included convoy and off-road
driving skills, vehicle maintenance and care, team interaction, individual skills, problem solving, leadership, adaptability, responsibility, brand awareness and communication abilities. They also had to submit a daily blog throughout the trip which was uploaded to the Ranger Odyssey website. The contestants received a score out of 10 for each aspect every day, and when the scores were tallied at the end of the expedition, Alex emerged as the clear winner. “Alex is not only an extremely skilled, but also a very calm individual who works well in a team,” said Ford South Africa’s Marketing Manager, Gavin Golightly. “The feedback we have received from the judges on Alex’s abilities, his attitude and unshakeable temperament makes us confident that the right person won.
