Elementary School, Ouca. Two Courtyards, one Ellipse Project | Elementary School Period | 2008 – 18 Mai/ 21 Jun. Location | Ouca. Portugal Client | Municipality of Vagos Landscape Design | Npk – Arquitectos Paisagistas Associados, Lda. Work stages | International competition entry Area | 3’222 m2 + 33’225 m2 - Landscape Design Cost | 3’836’731 € (estimate)

The two-courtyards school building lies in the middle of a green pine forest on the edge of a fertile and flat area; close to the sea's energy, and with plenty of solar warmth radiating down upon it. Both the design and the materials have been chosen on the basis of sustainable ideas. The architecture utilises lowenergy, prefabricated and high-insulating building components, and the building is clad with concrete prefab panels, contrasting with double-glasing solar reflecting glass.

To minimise electricity consumption the school makes optimal use of natural daylight, sun screening and natural ventilation. Integrated into the green roof's distinctive profile are a hidden solar heating system and a visible battery of solar cells. The school has minimal drinking water consumption and uses rainwater to flush the toilets. The green school arises by opening up for a closer interplay between the exterior and interior, allowing the green surroundings to become visible everywhere in the school.

The site The future school of Ouca, in the municipality of Vagos, is located in the midle of a green pine forest on the edge of a fertile and flat area. The nearby agricultural plots are well designed and display geometric rigor. The precise design reflects the agricultural use of the land made by its people. The local area is dominated by a dense and compact mass of trees with many shades of green.

Water wells Seen from the sky the site and its surroundings are marked by numerous black dots in the landscape. With many diferent sizes these curious and impressive dots are existing water wells. Our proposal opens up a clearing in the trees creating a circular platform with a radius of 58 meters that is 20 times greater than nearest well.

The starting point This platform is large enough to deploy the future school, but it calls for more recreational space, it needs to provide more outdoor space as the opportunity to play and run around. Then the circle becomes ellipse. This is the starting point for our proposal. A circular platform, within an ellipse opened between the trees.

The “podium” Within the circular platform we adjusted a square and built a volume 4.0 m in hight. In this volume opened two courtyards, one for the Pre-School and another for the Basic Education. The new school arises by opening up for space among the local trees.

The courtyards Each courtyard has its own character and was designed to be a recognizable architectural entity. In its relationship with the green surroundings and the common areas of the building, each of the courtyards has its own atmosphere, and is a world in itself.

The program The courtyards help to organize two of the three functional groups of the program, the Pre-School and the Basic Education. The thirth group, lies at its centre, which forms a dynamic and diverse meeting-place. Oriented towards North-South, the school's common functions, form an imaginary axis that both binds and divides the two courtyards

The Gym The gym of the school is half buried to the ground and trapped inside the building ensuring for natural light and ventilation. The volume of land resulting from the excavation of the gym is moved and deposited in a natural depression of the land.

The new school The building arises by opening up for a closer interplay between the exterior and interior, allowing the green surroundings to become. visible everywhere in the school.

Structure and Adaptability The project developed a solution that is easily adaptable to changing school population, teaching practices and programmes. The structural model was decisive to define the building volume, with relatively large spans betwen pillars, allows changes in internal partitioning. In the future, the entire interior partitioning can be reconfigured with great ease, remaining just as unique anchors, the main lobby and the gym.
