Project | EC. House Period | 1988 – Academic work Location | Cacilhas, Almada Architecture | Paulo Albuquerque Award | 1st Architectural Triennial of Sintra Area | 200’00 m2

The site for the house is a small pier on a small beach in Cacilhas, at the left bank of the Tagus River across from Lisbon. The plot can be described as a stone pier, very narrow and slightly bent, the quay is dominated from south by an enormous and very popular cliff. Seen from the ski the cliff presence is strong and impressive projecting a monumental shadow over the riverbank. This extraordinary wall of terra firma gets even stronger and powerful at the water level, however, is the awesome view over Lisbon and the river that catch everyone’s attention.

This is a weekend house for a writer, divorced, and with two twin baby daughters. The brief called for one living room with a kitchen, a large bedroom and a tiny garage. As a professional writer and passionate reader the client asked for a small library and a working place. The plot is an old and abandoned pier, shaky and falling apart onto the waters. In this context, the structural point of view was decisive to determine the footprint of the house. New foundations were laid in the quay where the ground is firm and can support construction. The house with three floors in height and an opaque and windowless envelope seems to be closed and somehow mysterious. Surprisingly a central glass-enclosed living space is carved within the house volume. A mezzanine with a glass roof top let the sunlight shine through and visually connects all levels of the house with the outside, the cliff, the river and Lisbon. The house is caught up between the force of the cliff and the magnificent view over Lisbon. However this is not, only, a house with a superb view over the city, that circumstance was no more than the starting point, every built element, as its own identity and was designed to be an identifiable architectural entity. Each compartment, the living room, the bedroom, the library, the stairways, has its own atmosphere; each one, has its individual character and is a world in itself.
