RED FISH IS A HIT. On the highway, facing the parking lot, still a hit. Red Fish totally transformed the sleepy Orange Mall into a hopping spot. The rustic shack is the brainchild of avid fisherman / restaurateur Herbie Merriweather, of Driftwood fame. And with food comes the appetite, because he is now talking about opening a rustic beef shack, with a similar concept, in another location, providing his wife Francine goes along with the idea. Our waitress Angela made all the difference, she was adorable and the food is good too, freshly caught fish, shrimp, conch, funchi, plantain & pickled onions. Honestly, the Creole sauce was anemic, but overall it was a good experience. I noted lawyers from neighboring offices, contractors, hoteliers and entertainers among lunch clients, and the car wash polished my car nicely, while we were eating. No credit or debit card facilities, bring cash. GOLF IN MEXICO. Adam Williamson, Tierra del Sol’s Head Golf Professional is moving on. In fact he is leaving the island to go to Mexico. Having said that I need to explain that he was offered an attractive position as golf pro at the Oakdale Country Club Golf Course, a beautiful and challenging course, located in the mountains of Western Maine, USA, in the town of Mexico. So no Tequila, but since the Pine Tree State is also nicknamed Vacationland, it can’t be that bad, and having lived here for 10 years, chances are we will see him back, he is just homesick a bit for America. Undina and the family will follow him in July . . . . YEMANJA OFFERS GLUTEN FREE, VEGAN AND VEGETARIAN DISHES. True, Yemanja has always offered vegetarian dishes with delicious woodfire grilled vegetables but in recent months chef Joyce Husken has been exploring gluten-free and vegan cuisine in addition to her already yummy vegetable tempura, grilled stuffed Portobello and zucchini. Believe it or not, her melt-in-your-mouth bread basket is gluten-free, and the most popular item on the menu is currently the Yoga Girls Mediterranean Quinoa Salad with Zaatar and Harissa dressing. Carnivores, do not fret, Joyce just introduced a to-live-for Picanha, new on the menu, with a trio of sauces, homemade BBQ, chimichurri & garlic, to make you happy. HOLLYWOOD SMOKED WEMA. I went to San Nicholas early. Competing team-members were entertaining the crowd with hot-dog eating contests, while their smokers and grills were preparing the goodies for the judges. The only one ready to serve was BBQ King Ribs. He had a line. I joined. Monkey see, monkey do. I should have waited for chef Garcia’s ribs from the L.G. Smith’s Chop & Steakhouse. The ribs I bought from BBQ King were terribly disappointing, fridge and cardboard flavored, bony and black, served with two soggy rolls, watery, tin-flavored beans, and a nicely seasoned chicken leg, still very pink on the inside. We have been enjoying the Hollywood Smokehouse barbeque too long. It spoiled us for all others. Incidentally, the delicious pork sliders at Wema Goes Memphis were smoked low and slow by the Hollywood Smokehouse heralding its opening mid-June, in a full-time location at Alhambra Casio & Shops. Tina, that’s awesome, writes chef Urvin Croes, I’m already planning my Sundays to include your BBQ brisket. BURGER KING IN NOORD. Burger King is opening a new eatery in Noord, checking into the historic Rio Grande Rum Shop. Pheeew!!! Relief. At least it’s not a snack truck and not a Chinese hardware store. LOVEBIRDS REPORT. Having lunch at Taste of Belgium power couple Nancy Gravenstijn and Randolph Arends, who have been together for a while. Nancy is a legal-eagle, at the helm of her own company, Advocatenkantoor N.S. Gravenstijn and Randolph is super busy tending for Living Today Aruba, his successful real estate company. Sounds like a perfect match. Randolph recently starred on a TV show aired in the USA focusing on House Hunters on the island. LA LINDA, FOREVER. I met designer Michael Douglas at La Linda’s Department Store, where he is the buyer on the fabric floor. He reports going to a show in the USA, to exciting Las Vegas of all places, to bring the latest styles and colors to Aruba. The store has a very good fabric selection, I admit, besides four floors of friendly merchandise. At 12:30pm we all took the elevator, on our way out for a lunch break. I tried to sneak into the cafeteria on the fourth floor, but it also closes midday. The very friendly girl working there invited me to come back for a cappuccino at 2:30pm. BEST GADO GADO. Surinam food lovers, and there are many of those among my friends, you will be happy to hear that Yanti is now double its original size, on L.G. Smith blvd 122. They enlarged the space but not the prices, and the humble eatery is always packed for lunch. NO DIET FOOD. I finally tried the Keshi Yena at Cappuccinisimo, on Caya Dr. JEM Arends in the building of Dr Tim Peterson’s clinic. Wow. Worth the trip to the neighborhood. Stewed shredded chicken, raisins and pickled onions on a bed of funchi, under a blanket of cheese by chef Rosanna Peterson. DRESS TO IMPRESS. Mango is undergoing a complete remodeling to include three floors of fashion for Men, Women and Kids including accessories, bags & shoes. Mango is a clothing design and manufacturing company, founded in Barcelona, and it has been in Aruba for many years. The total revamp is spearheaded by Melissa Chemaly, who now runs the show. SHOP TILL YOU DROP. With the closing of the Westin Resort & Casino, two of our favorite fashion stores, Tradewinds and Eva Boutique had to be relocated. Owner Liza Blok-Ponse reports they moved next door to the lobby of Divi Phoenix. Yolanda Hagelen, director of operations for the CRD Group NV, joins her in inviting their loyal local clients to come for their usual fashion fix, in the stores’ new home. HUGO BOSS AT ROYAL PLAZA. If the mountain will not come to Mohamed, Mohamed must go to the mountain. If cruise ship passengers don’t reach Plaza Margarita at the head of the main street to shop at Hugo Boss, then HB must move closer to the harbor, to Royal Plaza, second floor, into a stylish location, reports Gibi Lopez, best-dressed man, Dyanne’s husband, proprietor and businessman. CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH. In the business world, you make an appointment, then you go to the meeting prepared. In reality the 20+ officials enforcing the much-needed restaurant inspection, including fire marshals, the health department, the gas installation inspectors, Police and Immigration just show up, storming businesses by surprise. The team trouped into Que Pasa restaurant at 8:15pm one night recently, the place was packed, with each of the officials demanding to see papers and licenses, relevant to their department. Guests thought at first that they were being robbed, then settled into their dinner-specials once explained the situation. The chef demanded that visitors wear hair nets prior to entering her kitchen, good girl, then upon careful inspection the team left satisfied. Que Pasa passed with flying colors. I still think you should make appointments, send out lists of requirements, make it a learning opportunity thus reducing the number of punishable violations. RC@visitaruba.com
