Pipo Tafel V ita. Person. Life. Pipo Tafel was bor n in 1979 in Stuttgart and currently lives in Cologne. Before studying Media Arts at Kar lsruhe University of Arts and Design from which he graduated in 2012 cum laude, Pipo Tafel studied dance at Folkwang University of the Arts and accomplished the apprenticeship program D.A.N.C.E. in Brussels, Marseille, Aix-en-Provence and Dresden, directed by Angelin Preljocaj, Frédéric Flamand, W illiam Forsythe and Wayne McGregor. Tafel received the C ul tura l Pri z e for Me di a A r t s Baden-Wür t t em ber gischer Kulturpreis Förderpreis in 2011 for his installation Shadowing (2011), made in collaboration with Daniel Berwanger. He was nominated for the federal Media Arts Award For Emerging Artists in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2012. Other works include Breaking (2012), Rekonstruktion (2010), Nachtfalter (2009), ERICA (2008) and Salz im Auge (2009), which received a honorary mentioning from Deutsche Film- und Medienbewertung, the German public rating agency for cinema. Pipo Tafel received a dance research fellowship by the Arts Found ation of North-Rhine Westphalia and a research scholarship by the French Ministry of Culture in 2006. He was awarded with the

German Academic Exchange Service scholarship in 2007 and received the production price Tanzplan Dresden at Semper Oper kleine szene Dresden for his performance project ERICA in 2008. From 2008 until 2012 Tafel was selected for a studio fellowship by the Imhoff Foundation at the prestigious Kœlnischer Kunstverein. He received a performing arts stipend from Art Foundation Baden Württemberg in 2009 and was North Rhine-Westphalia dance research fellow together with Felix Bürkle in 2010. The same year he was invited as artist in residence by Charleroi Danses, Choreographic Centre of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and received the Interdisciplinary Media Arts Production Grant by Kunsts tiftung NR W together with the state chancellery stipend NR W. In 2010 he won the Walter Fink Award of the ZKM for Dance, Electro acoustic Music and Media together with Daniel Berwanger for the installation project one three two 133 (2010). Pipo Tafel is currently visiting lecturer at Palucca University for Dance Dresden (since 2010). In 2012 he was visiting lecturer at the Karlsruhe University for Arts and Design, Cultural Academy Baden-Württemberg and federal cultural program Kultur und Schule.

Works Tafel has been working as a dancer and performer in theatre production Clavigo (2004), his solo Ameland (2005), duo entre-acte (2006), the performance installations Human Writes (2006) and RONG (2007) by W illiam Forsythe and his own works ERICA (2008) and the dance film Salz im Auge (2009). Due to a chronic gastro intestinal disease, he stopped working as a dancer after a last solo performance at the Imatronic festival for Electronic Music at ZKM Karlsruhe in 2010. His short films sfghfs (2004), Les Souvenirs (2005) and Salz im Auge (2009) were shown in festivals in Europe an d norther n America such as 6th Dance Camera West Film Festival Los Angeles, La Biennale de Charleroi Danses, FIBER festival Amsterdam, FiSH national competition “Young German Film” Rostock, Intercollege Media Art Exhibition Kyoto, Screendance Basel, 2.PIXeLdaNce video art festival Thessaloniki, Dance Camera Istanbul, Festival BXS Bravo La Raffinerie Brussels, Les Rencontres//02 - Féstival des jeunes créateurs d’Europe des arts performatiques Marseille, UNERHÖR T! Film Festival Hamburg, 16th Inter national V ideo Festival Bochum, Tanzwoche Dresden. Tafel was winner of the student competition of the Inter national Dance for the Camera Festival 2006. In 2007 his multi-channel installation meme ri for choreographer Wayne McGregor, toured to theaters in Dresden, Brussels and was presented at Sadler’s Wells Theatre London. ERICA (2008) was performed at Semper Oper kleine szene in Dresden and invited to Bremen to the contemporary dance festival Xtra Frei. His collaborations include installation works for shows in Hellerau European Center for the Arts Dresden, dance nrw festival, PACT choreographic center NR W and Folkwang Tanzstudio, directed by Rodolpho Leoni and Pina Bausch. Group exhibitions include shows at the Gall ery BLAST (2009) and Clouth Werke Köln (2010), Grenzwerte Mixed Media Medienkunst am Oberrhein Freiburg (2011) and V ision Seeing at Neues Museum Weimar (2011), cur ated by Andreas Beitin and Peter Weibel. Most recently his film Breaking (2012) was shown at the 54th Nordic Filmdays Lübeck (2012).
