Past Events

In January, POINT hosted a seminar for seniors entitled “Lifelong Learning and Volunteering” which consisted of a panel of speakers. Topics touched on the benefits of volunteering from a volunteer perspective, how to seek opportunities including the application process and the importance of active living for Older Adults. Thank you to our engaging speakers for sharing their wealth of knowledge and personal experiences. This event was also the launch of our Senior Volunteer Guide which provides information on volunteer opportunities for Older Adults. POINT also held a Brain & Body Health Workshop for seniors in March, during which our guest speaker taught the group about the various types of memory loss and dementia and ways to prevent these issues as we age. The latter half of the workshop was an active component where participants learned a few dance moves from our Zumba instructor while also learning the benefits of warm up and stretching exercises. The group loved it!

& New Publications

Also in March, POINT launched the Technology for Seniors Guide, an introductory guide providing information on Smartphones, Tablets and Social Media. The guide was a project supported by grants from New Horizons for Seniors and the Province of Ontario. The contents of the guide were based on challenges faced by seniors of North Toronto who shared their experiences in a focus group conducted in November 2016. Thank you to Bill and Ian our Computer Instructors for co-facilitating and answering numerous questions from our participants! Also, a big thank you to the seniors of North Toronto for sharing your stories, challenges and questions with technology. The book is a hit! If you would like a copy of these Guides, please visit our office at 200 Eglinton Ave W. or view it online at If you would like to learn more about Computers, the Internet, Smartphones or other devices please contact us to register for a FREE Computer class.

Spring is finally here! These past few months POINT has been busy successfully running programs, supporting walk-in clients and, with the help of your feedback, planning our upcoming summer events. We couldn’t have done this without the dedicated staff, committed volunteers, and our community at large. Thank-you! I’d like to take this opportunity to talk about some unprecedented challenges that POINT is now facing including the closure of the North Toronto Memorial Community Center. The extensive maintenance and repair will begin in September 2017 for 18 to 24 months. This makes forward planning and fundraising even more difficult. However, until the Community Centre’s closure, POINT will continue to provide its regular community information services, assist walk-ins and host the planned events for our groups - the seniors, newcomers, families, children and youth. These events will be posted on our website, bulletin boards and email blasts. Alternatively you can stop by the office and come in for a chat. We’d love to hear from you. Behind the scenes the POINT board has been diligently working on the 2017-2020 strategy which addresses these challenges. A members’ focus meeting was held April 11th 2017 where the board outlined our proposed strategy to solicit member input and feedback. Stay tuned …
