“The Midtown Toronto Youth Council (MTYC) gave a voice to the youth in POINT's catchment area. For the first time, they had an avenue to discuss the issues that they saw and faced in their communities without fear of being judged or discriminated against, and it provided them the opportunity to work with like-minded peers to solve these problems. I loved being a part of this fantastic group of motivated youth, and always left our meetings inspired by the ideas generated and in awe of the time and effort they invested in the goal.”

I am excited to tell you what’s been happening with the Mid-Town Toronto Executive Network Forum. We continue with our Executive Breakfast Series meetings. On October 18th, we hosted our second meeting of the Executive Breakfast series. The guest speaker was Elizabeth Nykorowytsch Macnab, Executive Director of the Ontario Society of Senior Citizens’ Organizations, who presented on the topic of “Voices of Older Persons: Strategies for Positive Active Aging”. The next session is scheduled for November 29th, with Ann Rosenfield, CFRE, speaking on effective fundraising strategies for non-profit organizations. The forum benefits Executive Directors and Board Chairs by fostering new connections, a knowledge exchange between leaders of community services organizations, opportunities to learn about new trends and emerging issues in Midtown, and encourages potential future interagency collaborations to strengthen the ability of Midtown organizations to respond to unmet community needs. In other news, POINT in partnership with the Toronto Green Community, delivered the annual children’s summer gardening program, “The Great Garden Adventure”, with many children from the local community enjoying planting, watering, and learning about nature and gardening in the Eglinton Heritage Garden, located directly behind the North Toronto Memorial Community Centre. POINT staff and volunteers have also been busy implementing workshops and day trips under the POINT Senior Services Program. Workshops included: Creative Writing, Second Careers for Seniors, Power of Attorney of Property, and Preparing a Will. Recent day trips for seniors in need were outings to the Distillery District, St. Lawrence Market, Credit Valley and the town of Orangeville for a Fall Colours Tour in October. Welcome to Joanne Fernandes, who joined the POINT staff, as the new Community Information Service Coordinator. Joanne began her new position at POINT on September 26, 2016. Many thanks and best wishes to Jordana Rovet, who returned to school to pursue her Masters degree. With the holidays approaching, and many activities planned for the remainder of the year, on behalf of the POINT staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers, we wish you a happy and safe holiday season.
