Peace is a Choice You Make
Kate awoke like any other day, rolling out of bed with her hair in disarray.
She looked in the mirror while dressing for school, noticed her freckled face and said, “I look like a ghoul! I hate these freckles all over my face, I wish they would go live some other place!
Sneering at herself, Kate headed out the door, yelling to her parents, “See you at four!
She arrived at school running to her friends, hoping to chat before school began but the bell rang, she had gotten there late, so hanging out with her friends would have to wait.
At recess Kate was playing with Sunny, when along came Simon, calling her a dummy. Kate felt angry and shouted back, “Yeah?..Well you look like a woolly yak!
Kate knew that name calling could lead to kids brawling but she was feeling mad and wanted to make Simon feel bad. 9
After recess, Kate’s day dragged on, and she felt sad that everything was going wrong, wondering why everyone just couldn’t get along. Finally, the school bell rang, out of her seat she sprang!
As Kate headed for home her mind began to roam. Thinking about Simon calling her a dummy and getting a queasy feeling in her tummy.
Her feelings were hurt, and she was feeling like dirt. Not only because she was CALLED a dummy, but also because her reply was NOT so chummy. 11
When she got home, Kate turned on the television— only to see a world of division. People needing food and countries at war, she TURNED OFF the television she couldn’t take anymore!
Kate went up to her room to lie down to see if she could shed her frown. 12
She plopped down on her bed, shaking her head. jŲŲŘóƭóśśƭľĞľóƭĞʉŃŦƭľŃơǎŲƙśėɑ What is happening? Her thoughts swirled.
Then she spoke out loud: ɽƙĞƖĞŲƖśĞľĞśƖŃŦķɕʉPŲǎĐóŦUóơơŃơƭɕɾ ±ľĞóơŘĞėƭŲóŦǔŲŦĞśŃơƭĞŦŃŦķɏƙóŃơŃŦķľĞƙȊơƭɑ 13
Just as the words came out of her mouth, óơľŃŦǔďśóĐŘĐƙŲǎȋĞǎŃŦĶƙŲŤƭľĞơŲƵƭľɔ Landing clumsily on her window sill saying, “Please child, come closer, if you will?” My name is Patsy, I came to assist, to show you that which you wished.
Kate was surprised, but curious too, so she moved a little closer, to hear what Patsy knew. 14
“Take time to sit quietly and connect with your heart, THAT is the very place to start.” “Go inward dear Kate.” Patsy did say “Listen to your heart, it will show you the way.” “Peace begins with you and here is what to do, love and self acceptance is the way to a peaceful presence.”
“Peace is a choice you make in each action you take and in the words you speak, this is the technique.” ɽ¾ľóƭŃơƭƙƵĞĶƙĞĞėŲŤɏʉŤǔėĞóƙhóƭĞ YOU have the power to create!” 16
With a smile now on her face, Kate took a deep breath. Knowing how she could help, she felt less stress.
¦óƭơǔȋĞǎŲȅơƘƵóǎŘŃŦķɏɽ±ĞĞǔŲƵơŲŲŦɏɾ then began whistling a country tune! 17
Kate knew now, if she sat still and was calm she could hear her heart’s song. She closed her eyes, focused on her breath and let her heart do the rest.
Inside she saw the world with so many possibilities and began to see ALL of her abilities!
She felt connected to all life the birds, the trees, all people and all creatures of the seas. She heard the answers which came from her heart and listened how to take part.
“Peace is a choice you make in each action you take and in the words you speak, this is the technique.” “Love and self acceptance is the way to a peaceful presence.” 20
Kate learned that what her heart was singing, was the same message that Patsy was bringing.
She now understood where to begin, what she wanted to see on the outside needed to come from within! 22
“It is all here: love, hate, peace and war it is your choice, which one you root for.
The next morning, Kate got out of bed, looking at her freckles in the mirror with dread. She stopped herself, and put her ghoulish thoughts up on a shelf.
Recalling words from her heart and Patsy, the crow, Kate began planting seeds for inner peace to grow. 24
“I love my face covered in spots, I will only think positive thoughts!” Love and self acceptance is the way to a peaceful presence.” 25
Kate was at school, walking down the hall, when along came Simon looking for a brawl. As he passed by he gave Kate the old stink eye. Growling, “You’re a BRAT! What do you have to say about that?!”
Patsy’s words echoed in her mind, as she felt her heart in kind. “I will not take part in your name-calling game, I will not do the same. I choose to create peace of mind instead of name calling and being unkind.”
“Even if you call me a monster from the sea, I love and accept all of me!
Kate walked away with her head held high, ĶĞĞśŃŦķŕŲǔĶƵśóŦėśŃķľƭóơóďƵƭƭĞƙȋǔɔ She was proud of herself that she did not partake in name calling and spreading hate. 29
At lunch Kate shared with her friends what she had discovered. Saying, “Peace is inside YOU, just unveil the cover.
“Peace is a choice you make in each action you take and in the words you speak, this is the technique. Love and self acceptance is the way to a peaceful presence.
Kate already felt peaceful. Knowing that wherever she was she could take a pause, focus on her breath, and let her heart do the rest.
Begin creating peace today! ¦ĞóĐĞǎŲƙŘ(ĞȊŦŃƭŃŲŦɎ Exercises you do that create peace in your body, which will then create peace in the world. Peacework Exercise #1 Take time daily to be still and quiet. Sit so you are comfortable. Then set a timer for 3 minutes. Close your eyes. Focus on your heart and breathe deep into ǔŲƵƙďĞśśǔɔơǔŲƵŃŦľóśĞɏĶĞĞśǔŲƵƙďĞśśǔȊśśƵƖǎŃƭľóŃƙ like a balloon. As you exhale, feel your belly empty of air. Relax your body and listen. What does your heart have to say? You may do this alone, or with a family ŤĞŤďĞƙŲƙĶƙŃĞŦėɔĶƭĞƙƭľĞƭŃŤĞƙķŲĞơŲȅɏǎƙŃƭĞóďŲƵƭ or share with someone what you felt.
Peacework Exercise #2 Ask someone close to you for a list of your 5 favorite words and phrases, or write down a list yourself. Are you using words that create peace and harmony? Or are you using words that could hurt another persons feelings? Are you saying kind things about yourself and others? When you become aware of the words you use, you begin to realize you have a choice on what you say.
Peacework Exercise #3 Do you love and accept ALL OF YOU, from head to toe? Pick one part of yourself you dislike. Most of us have something we don’t like about ourselves. Maybe it’s your feet or hair or freckles. Now stand in front of a mirror, and ơóǔƭľƙĞĞƭŃŤĞơƭŲƭľóƭƖóƙƭŲĶǔŲƵɏʉɽUjÝ1äÅɑɾ
Peacework Exercise #4 Everyday perform at least one act of kindness. How do you know if it is an act of kindness or not? Check in with your heart and body. If you do something and your heart feels open and warm, then you are probably doing an act of kindness. If your heart feels closed, tight, or that there is a wall around it, you may want to rethink your actions. Every day you do an act of kindness, mark it down on a calendar. Celebrate when you reach the end of a month and have done an act of kindness on almost every single day. 35
