THE OXFORD FOUNDRY A M E R S I F O U N D AT I O N A C C E L E R ATO R

SUPPORTED BY SAID BUSINESS SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD

WELCOME TO THE OXFO L. E. V 8 A C C E L E R A T O R We are delighted to showcase the first 10 ventures joining us on the OXFO L.E.V8 accelerator at the Oxford Foundry for 2018, and who have now taken up a six month term of residence, in the Amersi Foundation Accelerator space. All of our ventures are affiliated to the University, and collectively they demonstrate just how entrepreneurial and diverse our eco-system is: we are supporting 30 entrepreneurs, convering 11 nationalities and 14 areas of study, from an MSc in Medical Anthropology to a DPhil in Population Health, with a 50/50 split between alumni and current Oxford students. While only 2 of the 10 teams have female leaders, this is a statistic I am passionately committed to improving. We are launching our L.E.V8 Women programme to ensure stronger and more prominent female representation across the board. The businesses cover a diverse range of sectors, and each of our teams is working on impact driven and purpose-led solutions to global issues,

from providing transparency and better accountability in the pharmaceutical industry supply chain through blockchain technology, to encouraging affordable, sustainable healthcare access, to providing business solutions in energy conservation. Through L.E.V8, our ventures will receive valuable access to a network of investors, mentors and entrepreneurial experts. Our tailored learning programme will support each participant as they evolve into resilient, empathic entrepreneurial leaders, strong communicators, and strategic thinkers. The L.E.V8 programme will help our teams to be scalable and sustainable well beyond their 6 month journey with us, and we expect that they in turn, will go on to create jobs for others while creating tangible social and economic impact. We extend a huge thank you to the Amersi Foundation for their generous gift and support. Ana Bakshi Inaugural Director of the Oxford Foundry

METRONOME ENERGY “WE MAKE IT CHEAPER AND MORE EFFICIENT TO SCALE AND BALANCE A RENEWABLE GRID VIA UNIQUE DEMAND-SIDE RESPONSE TECHNOLOGY.”

An energy technology company, essential to eliminating any need for future fossil fuel capacity. Metronome Energy is a Demand Side Response (DSR) technology company initially targeting the industrial refrigeration and storage market. We have developed a product – Metronomes - to provide static and dynamic Firm Frequency Response (FFR) services to the National Grid (NG) which gives customers real-time access to operating data from their assets. Metronome Energy maximizes the value of existing power consuming assets. In brief, Metronomes are smart little boxes that measure grid frequency and voltage. They use these inputs to decide the amount of power to draw. This allows us to bid the assets into the NG Balancing Market, which pays to interrupt a process during times of extreme stress to keep the grid from failing. We split this payment with the asset owner, giving them a new revenue stream. A key aspect of Metronomes is that they monitor the output process and do not interrupt supply if it would affect the output - put simply, for the asset owner it will always be business as usual.

SCOODLE “EVERYONE HAS THE ABILITY TO TEACH SOMETHING, AND THE DESIRE TO LEARN SOMETHING. SCOODLE BRINGS THE TWO TOGETHER.”

Scoodle connects students with tutors. Students can ask questions, get answers, and follow up by booking sessions with tutors. Scoodle is a platform that connects students with tutors. The company has already received investment from Morgan Stanley’s CEO in Taiwan and a string of c-suite investors from Miniclip. The idea is pretty simple, and it works in three steps: 1. Students ask questions in any subject 2. We send the questions to the best possible tutors, making sure they get amazing answers. 3. If a student wants to follow up and learn more, they can book sessions directly through the app.

ECOSYNC “ON A MISSION TO REDUCE THE CARBON FOOTPRINT OF LARGER ORGANISATIONS AND INSTITUTES”

EcoSync optimises the performance of buildings, and reduces their energy consumption by software-hardware integration. Large organisations spend millions of pounds on their energy bills and create tons of CO2 – meanwhile 70% of their heated rooms are empty and 40% of the energy is wasted. We wanted to come up with a solution addressing all 3 problems of pollution, cost and wasted energy, and the solution is simple: stop heating empty rooms! EcoSync is a cloud-based platform for existing building technology to synchronise and communicate. We harvest occupancy data from the room booking system and control heating by retrofitting radiators with smart valves. This way we can identify empty rooms and heat only those which are in use and save 40% on the energy bills of larger institutes like schools, office buildings and hotels.

V E R AT R A K “INCREASING VISIBILITY, TRUST AND EFFICIENCY BETWEEN SUPPLY CHAIN COMPANIES”

Veratrak is a blockchain-based enterprise software, purpose built to drive efficiencies in the pharmaceuticals supply chain. Fundamentally, as a first iteration, the problem our company is committed to solving is inefficient document management practices within the pharmaceutical supply chain. Critical supply chain documents such as product batch records, certificates of analysis, and product master data are currently shared through email, fax, and other timeintensive solutions that are prone to delays and mishandling. This lengthens lead times for deliveries, contributes to higher working capital requirements and is difficult to audit. Veratrak is a highly secure, auditable, document sharing platform that allows supply chain partners to communicate sensitive information more efficiently.

UTIL “SOLVING THE WORLD’S BIGGEST PROBLEMS BY PLACING SUSTAINABILITY AT THE HEART OF MAINSTREAM FINANCE.”

Util provides responsible asset managers with data and metrics to make more sustainable investment decisions. Util is an Oxford-based financial technology company providing responsible investors with actionable data and metrics. Solving the world’s major problems requires an estimated $4trn a year, and such amounts can only be serviced by mainstream investing. To support the asset management community in investing more responsibly, Util has developed a unique methodology, powered by machine learning, to holistically analyze the financial and non-financial value companies create and destroy for all their stakeholders. Util’s methodology is developed alongside worldclass academics and practitioners, and over 2018 Util will seek to develop its product offering alongside it’s two commercial partners, Hermes and ACTIAM (together managing $130bn assets), to bring its flagship data and analytics to the financial services industry, a $28.7bn global market.

BORESHA “UNLOCKING AGRICULTURAL CREDIT. EXTENDING RURAL ECONOMIES.”

Boresha Technologies manages working capital loans for informal supply chains in emerging markets, using proprietary digital ledger technology. Boresha is a financial technology company that increases lending activities in Africa’s informal economy, and is the first to address a £50 Billion unmet demand for small farm loans. Our founding team has years of grassroots experience in agribusiness and finance in Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia. We partner with informal aggregators who dominate rural markets, and help them to provide working capital loans to their farmers. We charge a transaction fee for all loans on the platform. Our marketing strategy is referral-based, our model requires zero working capital, and our service can be scaled to most agricultural supply chains and emerging markets. We are beta testing our application in Uganda’s dairy sector, where our first 7 clients operate milk businesses worth a total of £6.5 Million per year. We are raising funding to further develop our platform, and perform extensive market testing and behaviour change testing with our pilot users.

B R E AT H E O X “ENSURING NO ONE, IN ANY PART OF THE WORLD, EVER NEEDS TO BE HOSPITALIZED FOR ASTHMA, LET ALONE DIE FROM IT.”

BreatheOx is developing a home monitoring system to predict and prevent asthma attacks. In the UK, every 10 seconds someone is rushed to the emergency room, every 8 minutes someone is hospitalised and every 8 hours someone dies due to an asthma attack. Costs to treat patients with asthma attacks go up to billions each year. Despite advances in medical sciences and technology, and after spending billions, asthma sufferers still have to go through this traumatic experience of having an attack. One of the key reasons for this is the failure to identify early warning signs. Clinicians have no way of picking up on these subtle changes while the patients are at home and by the time patients themselves perceive the symptoms, it is often too late and they have to be rushed to the emergency. We are developing an automated and realtime home monitoring system that monitors asthma symptoms at home, predicts the risk of future attacks (up to days in advance) and enables the patients to self manage their conditions at home to prevent the attack.
