adopted home is in the hamlet of Kingston Lisle, near Wantage, and she combines her expertise as a cook with her involvement in bloodstock. With a background of the pony club and hunting, she is recognised as a first class judge of horses. A familiar sight at all the leading sales, she helps agent Amanda Skiffington. She also gained a few brownie points around Lambourn by procuring a greyhound on one of her many jaunts to Ireland. Named Petite Glory, the brindle bitch won the 2002 Waterloo Cup for a syndicate of well known racing personalities. Mr Pointment is the third

foal out of unraced Bettyhill, the first being the prolific scorer Ground Ball. Bettyhill is now carrying to Old Vic. Unfortunately, she lost her 2006 produce, an own-sister to Mr Pointment, as a foal. Her next offspring, a filly by Presenting, was bought in at Tattersalls Ireland last November, less than two weeks before Mr Pointment scored at Aintree. Anthea Gibson Fleming has already been involved with a Waterloo Cup winner and obviously she now has another target firmly in her sights. “Yes” she admits, “it certainly would be nice to bring off the great Liverpool double.”

BREEDERS IN THE NEWS

Brocklehurst turns to the web to attract new clients David Brocklehurst, who recently launched www.charlockstud.com, was determined to create a stud website with a difference. His aim was not simply to promote the benefits of Charlock Stud, which he runs with his wife Caroline in Northamptonshire, but to educate those logging on to the website about the ins and outs of breeding. “We wanted to provide a lot of information about the business of breeding, as well as racing, that you would not normally find on other studs’ websites,” said Brocklehurst. “We wanted to focus on three outstanding features: to explain how you can get involved in breeding and racing; to set out the criteria

that people use to select a broodmare; and to go through the breeding cycle of events throughout the year. “There is a huge shroud of mystery over the breeding side of racing and we wanted to de-mystify the whole process, so that people are not deterred from getting involved.” He added: “Many people in racing find the thrill of breeding a winner as great as owning a winner. We put together partnerships for quality broodmares whose progeny will be attractive to owners at the sales. “By pooling their resources, owners of broodmares will stand a far better chance of enjoying success.”
