PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE OCTOBER 2017 It is hard to believe it is already the 4th quarter of 2017. Where does the time go? It was a very busy summer here at the BIA with the Parade of Homes Banquet, the Future Housing Trends presentation with Edsel Charles, the Legislative Wrap Up breakfast and of course the Southeast Building Conference (SEBC) in Orlando. In addition to the Gaylord Palms being an awesome venue, the event itself was outstanding. We had a group of 11 locals representing the BIA. The FHBA Fall Leadership Conference is scheduled for October 18th - 21st in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. We also have the NAHB International Builders Show (IBS) January 9th – 11th, 2018 in Orlando. IBS is on a 2-year rotation between Orlando and Las Vegas and will not be back in Orlando until 2021, so if you are wanting to attend, make your plans soon. Let us know if you are going, as there will be some of us from the BIA attending this event. Our annual Nail Drivers’ Charity Golf Tournament is scheduled for Friday, October 13th; returning to Blackstone Golf Course in Mossy Head. Get your team together and sign up soon. Can’t play or don’t play golf, you can still help. Sponsor a watering hole table to promote your business, supply a door prize or even donate items for our goodie bags. It is always a good time and this is a great golf course. The Nail Drivers’ event is used to fund the William R. McClarrie Scholarship fund. Speaking of which, it is that time of year when we accept nominations from you for recipients for the McClarrie and Mike Josey Scholarships. Deadline for 2018 submission is November 6th, 2017. Watch your email for details. Do you know a member that has gone above and beyond this year? If so, you need to nominate them for the Builder or Associate Member of the Year Award. This annual recognition is presented to one outstanding member in both categories for their contributions to the building industry through the BIA and/or their charitable community involvement. The two winners are announced at the Annual Christmas Party and Board Installation being held on December 14th. We will be having our Christmas Open House at the BIA office on December 6th. We are looking for a sponsor for this fun and laid-back get together. Keep an eye out for information on both-of-these great events. Membership has its privileges. Are you, builders, taking advantage of the NAHB Builder Rebate Program? Builders are averaging about $1400 in annual rebates. What about 6

The Voice | OCTOBER 2017

the CEU opportunities you have as a BIA member? Some of them are free but they may have a small charge just to cover meals and snacks provided. Have you seen the new FHBA EDGE insurance product? Do you know about the new employee screening partnership FHBA has with Background Info USA or their sponsorship of a new Certified Rating Program offering single family home builders access to secure independent energy ratings based on Florida’s Energy Code? And for the Associates, we have been talking about a “Meet the Builder” event to bring the Builders and Associates together in one room. As with any new undertaking it takes some time to work out the details; we'll keep you posted. Builders and Associates can both take advantage of the wide variety of free legal contracts available for download on the FHBA website. There are a wide variety of additional member benefits available to you through both the FHBA and NAHB organizations. Contact us and we can point you in the right direction. Membership is the lifeblood of any organization, especially the construction industry. Without members, there is no voice speaking for our industry. Can you imagine what this industry would look like if there was no push back on our part? If there was no David to stand up to Goliath? Would you be working in construction? We need members. We need our current members to stay with us. We need new members to join so that we can keep standing up for the industry. The construction industry has been around a long time and will continue to be around for a long time to come. Please do business with a member first. And if there are no members for what you need, find what you need and then get them to join. It’s the way the organization stays in existence. This is my last column and I want to say it has been an honor to serve the BIA as the first Associate Member president. I want to thank the board members for putting their trust in me in selecting me for this position, 3 years ago. I also want to thank Alan and Jennifer for their roles in making the BIA run as smoothly as it does. Without their dedication, the President’s job would have been a whole lot more work than it was for me. I also want to say "thank you" for your service, this year, to VP Andy Wilson who will be your 2018 President and Treasurer Doug Liles, who will be your 2019 President. You guys were a rock-solid cabinet. In closing I would like to say that as with anything you do in life, the more effort you put into it the more reward you generally get out of it. Get involved and help others get involved and we can all prosper.

FHBA FHBA MODEL CONTRACTS UPDATED TO REFLECT CHANGE IN STATUTE OF REPOSE LAW Once the Governor signed the Statute of Repose Bill, FHBA Senior Officers had two immediate requests. First, update our model contracts to address the changes. As a result, FHBA worked with a Board Certified Construction Attorney to revise the model contracts in an effort to address the most recent changes to Florida’s Statute of Repose Law. Visit http:// fhba.com/resources/contracts-2/ to access the new contracts (Note: Log in with your e-mail and password, FHBA). Secondly, the Senior Officers asked that FHBA capitalize on the Governor’s promise to support future legislation addressing the law’s uncertainty with respect to residential contractors. The crux of the issue concerns the time when the statute of repose begin to toll. The bill signed into law provides clarification for commercial contractors, but we continue to stress it created more uncertainty for residential contractors. Henceforth one of our 2018 Legislative priorities is to fix the uncertainty created by last year’s bill. Sen. Passidomo (R-Naples) agreed to sponsor the glitch legislation in the Senate while Rep. Tom Leek (R-Daytona Beach) will work on our behalf in the House.

• Standard Construction Contract on Builder’s Property • Residential Builder’s Agreement • Standard Construction on Owner’s Property • Standard Remodeling Contract Finally, if you see Sen. Passidomo or Rep. Leek, thank them for their willingness to help!

SAFETY JOBSITE GUIDELINES FOR HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS • Take photos of valuables that cannot leave the jobsite • Clean up all construction debris • Tie or band together all loose building materials • Remove your permit board and jobsite signage • Turn off electricity, water, and gas • Push over portable toilets and secure them by placing concrete blocks or sand inside

Northwest Florida was spared from the wrath of Hurricane Irma, but with over one month left of the Hurricane Season, we all need to keep an eye on the Gulf and Atlantic to be prepared in case next time we’re not so lucky. Following are guidelines from FHBA to prepare your jobsite in case of a storm. 1. Approximately 60-48 hours prior to hurricane landfall, postpone delivery of building materials to all jobsites except any you may need to secure a site from storm damage. 2. As a hurricane’s direction and force intensifies within 48-24 hours before landfall: • Stop all construction activity • Activate your hurricane jobsite plan • Notify your subcontractors to help you secure the jobsite 3. Jobsite preparation tips: • Give priority attention to those located in populated areas • Confirm batteries are reliable in all important equipment and tools, including cell phones • Fill up gas tanks in work and personal vehicles

4. Advise your subcontractors to leave and not return to the jobsite until the hurricane threat has passed. Let your subcontractors know who will be contacting them after the hurricane passes. 5. During the final 24 hours prior to hurricane landfall, go home to prepare your family and personal property Any questions on preparation or protection, contact your local Emergency Management offices now, before an emergency occurs. Okaloosa County Emergency Manager; Randy McDaniel, 850651-7150. Walton County Emergency Manager; Jeff Goldberg, 850-892-8065.

IBS THE ROI OF ATTENDING IBS: IS IT WORTH IT? When considering whether or not to attend the NAHB International Builders’ Show® (IBS), one of the first things you look at is the expense. The Builders’ Show is not terribly expensive, but depending on where you are coming from, between registration, airfare and accommodations, the costs can add up. And if you haven’t attended IBS before you may wonder, “Is attending this particular trade show really worth it?” Every year, people tell us they made “the connection” that brought in new business or helped solve a major challenge. Others share how amazing it is to see cutting-edge products all in one place, along with their gratitude for the incredible education options that gave them the tools, tips and insights they can use in their businesses, plus get the needed CEUs for their licensing. The truth is, we know that the return on investment completely outweighs the hard costs. Here are the reasons why attending IBS is completely worth the investment:

Networking | Build Business Connections • Networking: The greatest insights often come from others in the industry because they understand your unique challenges and share similar goals. There are plenty of networking opportunities at IBS to meet others and talk shop. • Get Immediate Answers: Trade shows create an environment for easy communication between exhibitors and fellow attendees which helps you get the answers you need—often providing that nugget of information to steer your business in the right direction.

Show Floor | See, Compare & Preview New Products • See: IBS features more than 1,400 manufacturers and suppliers from around the globe. Nowhere else will you find so many products under one roof than the IBS show floor. • Compare: Walk the show floor to compare products and services, and to talk to knowledgeable product reps who can help you understand their products better so you can make informed decisions. • Preview: Exhibitors often launch new products at IBS, and new companies come to make a splash in the industry, meet buyers and get media coverage. Only by attending can you see these innovative products first-hand.

Industry Insights | Research, Learn & Grow Professionally • Access to Experts: IBS is where all of the well-known industry experts congregate. This is where you can hear success stories and critical insights from keynote speakers and sit in on specialized education sessions. • Spark New Ideas: When you attend IBS, you’re bound to discover new concepts that help you in business especially when you attend education sessions and live demos. • Stay Competitive: IBS provides current data on marketing trends, consumer preferences, economic outlooks and more to help you make smart business choices. • Industry Benchmarks: Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses versus the competition by attending IBS programs that reveal the latest industry information.

If you haven’t attended IBS before, you qualify for the First Time Attendee rate of $150 for a full registration that includes all of the show’s education and an expo pass. And for returning IBS registrants, you’ll save $50 if you register by November 11. Make 2018 the year you invest in your professional development.
