The chamber serves the needs of business and industry while addressing the desires of a growing population. Our membership base is highly diversified. Whether it’s a sole-proprietorship, or a large corporation, the general expectations are the same—promoting pro-business legislation, growing the primary job sectors and expanding the residential marketplace. The Owasso Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to advancing the growth of existing businesses, advocating for new business development and creating an enhanced quality of life for our citizens. Led by a professional board of directors and staff, our primary mission is to foster an environment in which investments, both commercial and residential, provide the business and home owner with the greatest possible return on investment. The Owasso Chamber is a powerful voice for business and industry. In order to advance business friendly legislation, we work closely with administrators and elected officials—from Owasso’s city government and school administration, to our county, state and federal delegations. Concentrated efforts include, advocating for educational initiatives, expanding transportation corridors, broadening the range of healthcare services and expanding economic & workforce development within our city and region. Chairman Mitchell stated, “Our involvement in acquiring the Macy’s fulfillment center was at the forefront of 2014’s accomplishments. This 1.3 million s/f, $180 million facility will bring an estimated 1500 full time and part time jobs in early, 2015. Additionally, residential, retail, and healthcare markets are growing. We are excited about the rapid expansion of restaurants to serve the citizens of Owasso and northeastern Oklahoma.”

In 1990 a small group of visionary people in Owasso saw the need for a crisis pregnancy center. More and more women were opting to end their pregnancies in abortion and this group wanted to create a life affirming, Christian response to the challenge. On February 24, 1990, the Pregnancy Resource Center of Owasso (formerly Life Alternative) was formed. With just a telephone line and a small office on 86th St N., volunteers manned the center two days a week. In the first year, 39 clients visited the center for information, counseling and a free pregnancy test. PRC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Donations are their sole source of income and all of their services are FREE. Their services include Pregnancy Testing, Limited Ultrasound, Sexually Transmitted Disease Testing (STDs), the Earn While You Learn (EWYL) educational program that originates during pregnancy and continues until the infant is 4-6 months old. (This is the one on one visits with a mentor). After the EWYL program is completed, the clients are then placed into a Group class, which is a support group with their peers. Since January of 2014, over 2021 appointments have been held. Coming in 2015-DAD’S PROGRAM. Some of their events Learn how to be a Partner www.prcowasso.org

Schools….

A Pride of the Community

THE OWASSO SCHOOL SYSTEM Owasso, the fourth-largest school in Oklahoma, is well known throughout the state for the quality of education provided. Owasso has eight elementary schools serving children pre-K-5th grades. The sixth, seventh and eighth grades have schools for each grade. Ninth and 10th grades attend the Mid-High across the street from the high school. Eleventh and 12th attend the high school. The school population is 9,640. Dr. Clark Ogilvie is Superintendent of Schools. Five school board members serve five wards of the city for terms of five years each. They are Frosty Turpen, serving as the 2014-15 president; Gail Ballinger, Brent England, Pat Vanatta and Rhonda Mills. The district boasts strong academic, fine arts and athletic programs, including schools scoring high on state testing, and ACT scores which are above state and national averages; vocal music programs scoring superior at state competition; a band program that is among the best; and a baseball team that has won a record 12 state championships.

High School Lobby Ogilvie predicted a 10,000-member student body within five or six years after he came, but that slowed when the recession hit and student growth went flat. That has picked up recently and that goal should be reached in a year or two. With all the elementary schools at capacity he is looking at a bond issue in 2015 to build a ninth grade school in the northwest area near 116th and Hwy. 169. Another plan is for a 1 to 1 technology for grades 9-12 in which each student will have an I-Pad device, eventually replacing textbooks. This will be done gradually. He said having watched the school grow along with the city’s growth has been exciting and positive and he looks forward to great things for the district in the future.

DR. CLARK OGILVIE, SUPERINTENDENT Dr. Clark Ogilvie is in his 11th year as Superintendent of Owasso Public Schools. During his tenure Owasso patrons have approved 11 bond issues totaling $120 million. That has gone to renovate all existing buildings and build two new ones, Barnes and Stone Canyon Elementary schools. All schools were given new secure entrances providing added safety for students and personnel. The high school underwent an extensive renovated. A Wellness Center was added at the north end of Owasso Stadium. Ogilvie said those returning to a reunion of the school’s only football championship “were blown away. They couldn’t believe how far the facilities have come in 40 years.”

The Owasso Band Program has a long history of excellence. Since 1980 the High School Band has earned 98 State Sweepstakes Awards. The high school has five contest-level concert bands. The PRIDE of Owasso marching band has received First Divisions in the State Marching Competition for the past 41 consecutive years. The band places more students on All-Region and All-State Bands than any other in the state. The concert bands consist of 365 musicians ninth through 12th grades. All are a part of the PRIDE marching band for parades and pre-game shows. 270 participate in the competition band; the others are divided into five concert bands and two basketball pep bands. Students begin the program in the sixth grade. There are two seventh-grade and two eighth-grade bands, making a total of nine bands and 891 musicians in the program. Chris Harris is the Director of Bands. His staff consists of Chris Barber, Steve Workman, Jana Gorham, Shawn O’Kelley, Cindy Craft, and the newest addition, Brady Hollon. Susan Majestic is the band secretary.

2014 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin Outstanding Marching Band

TRANSITION: Passage of the Baton David Gorham and his wife Jana took over a successful program in 1989, and in the ensuing years built it not only in numbers (from 124 to 380 members) but into one of the best bands in the state. Gorham was selected as the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association Director of the Year for 1997. A few of the many honors the band received during his tenure were the prestigious David Gorham international Sudler Flag of Honor and the Sudler Shield, for outstanding marching and concert respectively, by the John Philip Sousa Foundation, the only Oklahoma band to receive both. His Wind Ensemble twice has made appearances at the Midwest International Band Clinic in Chicago. The concert bands have participated in contests in Chicago, Washington D.C., Orlando, St. Louis, Houston, Virginia Beach, Atlanta, Chattanooga, and San Antonio. A highlight was placing seventh out of 90 bands in the Grand National Championships in Indianapolis. It has made five appearances in the Tournament of Roses Parade and once in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. His hobby has been arranging and composing band music. He retired this spring to spend more time doing that. Jana is still in the program and David continues to support the band wherever it goes.

Chris Harris, who has been with the program since 2004, took over as Director of Bands the summer of 2014. He is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma with BA and Masters Degrees in Music Education. He and wife Marti have one daughter, Claire, who is a percussionist in the eighth-grade band. Chris takes over the business portion of the bands as well as overseeing the whole program. He conducts the Wind Ensemble, coordinates Chris Harris the marching band in performances and competition shows, and teaches AP Music Theory, a college freshman class for high school students. Taking over the bands has suddenly thrown a lot of things his way which he says he’s catching up on with a lot of help from his staff, the administration and the community as a whole. His motto: “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” “I’ve been here long enough to see how the system works,” he said. “With the assistant of the sixth-grade center the kids get off to a great start, without which the rest is shot. “The driving force of the band program is behavior and citizenship. If you don’t have that you never reach your peak as a musician. You take that with you your whole life.”

Everyone knows and agrees that school is important for our youth. But what about school extracurricular activities? Does football really makes a difference in a young man’s life? Is singing in the choir something nice for an adolescent or something more? Is participation in a student club organizing projects to help others really good for our Owasso youth? Owasso Community Resources believes that extracurricular activities can offer youth a safe and supervised haven and a chance to learn new skills such as conflict resolution, prepare for a successful career, improve grades and develop relationships with caring adults. The opportunity to participate in school extracurricular activities can be critical in helping our youth develop in positive ways and to avoid behavior problems and conflict. Angel Scholarships are only available through a referral by the school counselor. For more information go to www.owassohelps.org.
