wasso began as a settlement in 1881 near what is now 66th St North & 129th E Ave. It was named for Elm Creek, a tributary of Bird Creek. When the rail line was extended south from Bartlesville in 1897, a depot was constructed near what is now 76th St North and Atlanta. Preston Ballard had established a post office in 1898 in the general store that he owned, and was appointed the first postmaster. The name of the Elm Creek Post Office was changed to Owasso Post Office in 1900. The first train came into Elm Creek in 1899. There is some confusion as to whether Owasso is an Osage or Cherokee word (most people believe that it is Osage), however, it has been interpreted to mean “the end” or “turn around” because the rail line ended in the area where the City of Owasso Pubic Works Admin building is now located. The steam locomotives got their water supply at the lake near 86th St N & N Mingo, and were turned around near the depot and headed back north. The rail line was not extended into Tulsa until 1905. First national Bank, 1906 The first newspaper, The Owasso Ledger, was published in 1903 by U.P. Wardrip. Subscriptions were $1 per year, paid in advance. The first church building constructed in Owasso was the First Baptist Church, with the first service in a church building held on March 2, 1905. Owasso’s first bank was First National Bank, built in 1906 on the south west corner of Broadway and Main. The first telephone exchange, established in 1905, was Pioneer Telephone & Telegraph Company. Owasso didn’t have a water system until the downtown water tower was erected in 1924. Prior to the erection of the tower, water was brought into town in barrels from the ten-acre Owasso Lake, northwest of the community (near 86th St N & N Mingo Rd). It sold Main St. Owasso, 1909 for 50 cents a barrel. owassochamber.com

Timmy & Cindy All About The Bronze Statues Of A Girl and A Boy Found Throughout Owasso

48 Lifestyle Owasso Magazine 2013-2014

B

ronze statues of TImmy & CIndy can be found throughout Owasso, but what’s the story behind them? The Timmy and Cindy Project is a public arts initiative that utilizes bronze castings of an active young boy and girl. The castings are placed at strategic locations throughout the community on public property. Purchase of the castings is funded by families, individuals, or organizations. Each casting bears a small plaque with the donor’s name. Site selection is made by city staff and the statue donor. Labor to set the statues is provided by city staff. The program began in the spring of 2004 with 14 castings placed at 14 different sites. At this time, there are 35 castings throughout the city. Here’s where you can find them:
