Eighteen students from the Hudson and Holland Scholars Program, Groups Scholars Program, and 21st Century Scholars Program travelled to Brazil from May 11 through June 24, 2017 as part of the History of Race in the Americans: Exploring Racial Identity and Representation in Brazil study abroad course. During the trip, students traveled to Rio De Janeiro and Paraty exploring the multifaceted dimensions of race and racial identity in the Brazil with particular emphasis on Afro—Brazilians and the African Diaspora in Brazil. The trip included visits to historical and cultural sites, academic institutions, non-governmental organizations, and local communities. Students examined the causes and effects of Brazil’s complex past on contemporary society and consider race as both a social construct and as a lived experience in this fascinating part of the world.
