OUTWARD BOUND

AT ANAKIWA ANAKIWA, 1962

At the time of the Treaty of Waitangi the residents of Anakiwa were Ngāti Rāhiri. Although this hapū departed during the 1850 land wars to support their whānau in Taranaki, other hapū and whānau of Te Ātiawa have manawhenua (authority over the land) throughout the area to the present day. In 1962, the Outward Bound Trust of New Zealand purchased a guest house built by the Beauchamp family who had farmed Anakiwa since 1863. Governor-General Lord Cobham opened the school on 1st September 1962 and shortly after thirty-six young men were welcomed on the first course. Ten years later the first women were invited to attend. Over the years the school has grown significantly with the original guest house being replaced with new buildings in 1980 and the addition of a new watch house in 2018 as part of Project Refresh, a major building campaign to future proof the school. Outward Bound and Te Ātiawa recognise the diverse history of Anakiwa, and actively work together to protect the uniqueness of the area.

OUTWARD BOUND

AN INTERNATIONAL MOVEMENT Outward Bound New Zealand is part of an international network of over 30 Outward Bound schools worldwide. Originating in Britain and influenced by philosopher and educator Dr Kurt Hahn, its initial purpose was to help young WWII servicemen better survive the physical and mental challenges of war.

The first Outward Bound School opened at Aberdovey in North Wales in 1941 and its mission quickly grew to include people from all backgrounds. Courses are designed to give participants greater insights into their own abilities and tenacity, summed up in Kurt Hahn’s favourite expression “Plus est en vous - There is more in you”. The name ‘Outward Bound’ is a nautical term to denote a ship about to head out of port to open sea.

WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE?

THERE IS MORE IN YOU (Kurt Hahn, founder of Outward Bound).

This simple idea forms the basis of Outward Bound’s philosophy and is the guiding principle for all our experiences. We specialise in facilitating complex, fun and challenging experiences in the outdoors that help individuals realise their full potential.

“There is so much more to Outward Bound than physical challenges. Every strenuous activity, every test of endurance, every uncomfortable night’s sleep is designed to teach you something about yourself.” Jo Percival, Mackenzie 638

WHAT MAKES A GREAT STUDENT? Often when we speak to people about “who” Outward Bound is for, we hear stories about young people who were sent here to get “straightened out”. Yes, we love developing youth into confident and resilient adults, but what might surprise many, is that most of our students are aged 18+yrs. We value diversity; any age, gender, ethnicity, or religion. To date our oldest student was 78! Know someone who is keen to beat that record? Send them our way!

Here are the key attributes that make for a great Outward Bound student:

Open to Learning

Above anything else, you need to be open to the process of learning more about yourself and working in a team. This is not to say that you won’t find working in close quarters with others challenging… but being open to what is on offer is fundamental to making the most of your Outward Bound course.

Open to Getting Involved

The more you put into your course, the more you will take away. Giving things a go is pivotal to the success of your OB experience.

A Base Level of Health

You do not have to be an athlete to get the most out of your course but ensuring you are physically and mentally in good shape will support you to reach the best course outcomes.
