Wells: Four communities in Malawi dug five new wells in 2017. Previously, lack of access to potable water forced residents to spend four hours each day walking to distant wells or springs. The new wells benefit more than 3,000 people, freeing them to designate their reclaimed hours for other projects, and providing permanent, reliable sources of clean, safe water to meet their daily needs.

Composting Latrines: Throughout the summer of 2017, 87 families in four communities replaced their dangerous, unsanitary pit latrines with simple, effective composting latrines. Along with improved health and hygiene for 348 family members, the new latrines provide hearty, valuable organic fertilizer for crops and gardens.

Vaccinations and Insurance for Animals: Recurring illness in livestock is a costly problem for those who rely on working animals for income. Community partners arranged for a visit from a veterinarian to perform medical consultations for 35 of their animals, with 22 receiving treatment. Sixteen families also gained governmentsponsored livestock insurance.

New Communities, Same Success: Since beginning work in February 2017, one of Outreach’s newest partners, the Bosque Centro community, has already completed three projects: Accessing 12 goats to raise, breed, and sell; planting 22 pounds of vegetable seeds and 203 fruit trees for backyard gardens; and rehabilitating ponds in advance of the addition of 8,000 tilapia to establish a community-run tilapiafarming cooperative.

Rubbish Pits: Two new Outreachaffiliated communities have already dug more than 100 rubbish pits to combat the deleterious effects of waste and litter in shared public areas. While the scale of this project is considered small, its success has been an incredible means of establishing self-confidence in community members, and a promising indication of all the good things still to come.
