The building was designed based on sustainability and efficiency. The building has curtain walls and skylights to allow for natural lighting as well as a louver system near the classrooms for cooling/shading. It has a rooftop farm on top of the lobby area as well as an atrium. Upon entrance to the site, cars can either park their cars or drive underneath the classrooms to the entrance of the building to either pick up or drop someone off.

Po r t f o l i o

For this project we designed a site which accomodates a building, 200 parking spaces, and a service entry road. The building needed to include a reception area, 20 classrooms, a dining area, a meeting area, a business room, a lobby, and an auditorium. The emphasis was placed on creativity in the process of integrating spatial, structural, mechanical, and electrical systems in the design.

The Apex Preface Part I Fort Greene is a diverse neighborhood filled with lots of history. This neighborhood got its name from the American Revolutionary War era Fort built in 1776 under the supervision of General Nathaneal Greene, whi aided George Washington during the battle in Long Island. Fort Greene has many different notable landmarks and buildings. Fort Greene park is one of the many parks built in Brooklyn designed by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmstead. Brooklyn Technical High School is a specialized, prestigious high school located here. Fort Greene is also home to the museum of Contemporary Disporan Arts, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Urban Glass. The site of this project, is located on the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Prince Street. The site sits on land split into both commercial and residential zoning. It’s near Flatbush Avenue, a major Brooklyn Roadway that leads to the Brooklyn Bridge. Many bus and subway routes travel near this site. The Brooklyner, the Oro Condominium, MetroTech Buildings, Avalon, and Toren are some of the major residential sky risers located here.

The Apex is a cluster of both residential and commercial space given the same type of ecological, sustainable, and design style treatment. These buildings are modernist and dynamic with subtractive spaces. The buildings are connected through a community greenhouse roof system, similar to the concept of Rooftop Farms, a community market that grows and sells fruits and vegetables in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The approach of this cluster of buildings will be similar to the approach of the Shenzhen Interchange and Linked Hybrid in how it twists together natural green space with ecological systems. These buildings are designed with structural and functional efficiency with dramatic new forms and technology. The tower is LEED Certified, and contains integrated terraces to take advantage of cityscapes. The proposed Residences between Fleet Pl. and Ashland Pl. take advantage of natural sunlight and contain terraces and penthouses much like Richard Meier’s building on Prospect Park. This project investigates what conceptually links residential spaces to commercial spaces as well as how different types of buildings within a controlled design approach complement each other. The tower includes office spaces and hotels and is right next to the midway. The Art and Design Center is located across Fleet Street. The residential buildings contain studio, 1, 2, and 3 bedroom dwelling units with amenities, terraces, and a greenhouse on top which spreads throughout the buildings.

“Fort Greene is home to the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA), the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Urban Glass, and the prestigious Brooklyn Technical High School. Although brownstones are prevalent throughout the area, potential residents are often charmed by 19th century mint-condition Italianate, Greek Revival, Romanesque and Renaissance row houses that remain. Residents enjoy weekend flea market excursions, purchasing produce from the local farmer’s market, or going for a peaceful stroll in Fort Greene Park. Designed by the same team responsible for Manhattan’s famed Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the park’s blossoming chestnut trees and spacious grassy areas have become a local staple.”

“Home to Pratt University and block after block of historic brownstones. Just walking around this part of the city is enough for an enjoyable experience. There are plenty of great restaurants and cheap cool bars. Fort green park is really nice.. maybe not as nice as prospect park but definitely worth checking out. A very diverse friendly community.”

Description: WORKac , with their Shenzhen Metro Tower project, has initiated an appreciable effort in this direction bringing in diversity in the lines of the pragmatic style of Shenzhen Metro Corporation and infusing it well with eco-consciousness and their own style of surrealistic architecture. The imminent tower named as the Shenzhen Interchange, holds an attractive landmark position being at the metropolitan crosspoint of the underground Metro, significant horizontally intersecting boulevards, ground-level bus station, shopping podiums and important central offices and hotels. This position makes it all the more crucial for the venture to become more of an architectural statement for the New York based WORKac designer group and the neighboring area as well.

Building: Linked Hybrid Architect: Steven Holl Location: Beijing, China Description: The 220,000 square meter pedestrian-oriented Linked Hybrid complex, sited adjacent to the site of old city wall of Beijing, aims to counter the current privatized urban developments in China by creating a new twenty-first century porous urban space, inviting and open to the public from every side. Filmic urban public space; around, over and through multifaceted spatial layers, as well as the many passages through the project, make the Linked Hybrid an “open city within a city”. The project promotes interactive relations and encourages encounters in the public spaces that vary from commercial, residential, and educational to recreational. The entire complex is a three-dimensional urban space in which buildings on the ground, under the ground and over the ground are fused together.
