Women’s article & teams

The OEFN Women’s football competition is now in its final four home and away weeks and wasn’t there some great games last weekend. It had everything from Yarra Junctions surprise victory over Olinda Ferny Creek, to the cracking match between ladder leaders Upwey Tecoma and Healesville and finally Seville’s gallant display against Belgrave.

Belgrave started with a flurry of scoring against Seville last weekend which left Seville on the back foot all night. Despite two late goals in the final term, Seville were able to hold Belgrave to just one behind for a large portion of the match. Danielle Weisgerber & Catherine Smith lead the way for the magpies, whilst Captain Nicole Kimpton & Kylie Ockwell were strong in defence all night for Seville. Seville just lacked some ball winners through the middle of the ground on this occasion.

Yarra Junction started well against Olinda ad held a small lead at quarter time. Olinda was able to reverse that lead into it’s favour by half time with both sides having missed some major scoring opportunities. It was these opportunities that Junction were able to capitalise on in the second half, kicking the only goal and taking out their 3rd win of the season, which also keeps a small chance of finals action alive for the Eagles. Olinda was just far too inaccurate in front of goal on the day, with one goal and nine behinds, resulting in their 3rd loss of the season. Adele Ormsby & Sarah Wilcox were best for the victors, whilst Emmalee Keegan & Claire Hyett were named as best for Olinda.

Upwey Tecoma and Healesville played out a titanic affair on Saturday evening with the home side securing the victory with the last centre clearance of the match. It was a very accurate Healesville with five straight goals who held a four-point lead at half time. In the second half Upwey were able to kick four goals, one behind to Healesville’s two goals, five behinds to remain in top spot on the ladder. Emma Caccetta & Kiana Oates were named in best for Upwey, whilst Amy Frazzetto, Milla Potter were in the best for Healesville.

The OEFN Women’s competitions are heading toward just their second Finals Series starting on Sunday the 31st July, with the first ever OEFN Women’s Grand Finals to be played on Sunday the 14th August. The 9 teams are playing in a two-conference system, with each team’s conference listed next two the teams name in the fixtures and ladders. Each conference has a top four, 3-week finals series, with both Grand Finals being played together on the 14th of August. It sure is an exciting next seven weeks coming up for the OEFN and our Women’s footballers. Make sure you get along to support then and see how well they are going.
