Sexy singer, Claudio won many fans during his residency at Café Royale in Pattaya’s Boyztown and in Bangkok, as half of the El Duo double act. He is now developing an army of international followers as he embarks upon a solo career. The good-looking 26-year-old songster spoke to James Barnes.

“I was born in Manila and now I live in Pattaya and the Philippines,” he says with a winning smile. He wanted to be a dancer but it was his family who recognized his talent for singing and who gave him the confidence to perform. “I hid my voice for many years because when I was a little boy, I loved to dance and I was good dancer. I was a star dancer and instructor in our high school.” Claudio’s father wanted him to sing for friends at house parties but sadly, he died before his son gave his first public performance at a school concert, aged fourteen. “It was his dream for me, Claudio recalls.

A year later, he started his professional singing career. “I love singing, not only because I am sharing my talent, but also showing my emotions, the real me through singing and my music,” he says earnestly. He first came to Thailand in June 2006 with El Duo partner DK. “It was a whole new experience; I was supposed to go Japan, but when I came here, I enjoyed the lifestyle and met new friends, nice people who helped us when we were first in Thailand and just starting to sing.” 11

It makes no difference what sexual preference people have they love my music

“I met a Thai person who worked in a newly opened pub in Silom, Bangkok. They wanted a male singer and he introduced me to his boss, an Englishman. Then DK and I started to sing there as their regular singers. And this Englishman was the one who gave us the name El Duo.” Claudio and DK were old friends, “We used to sing in a boyband in the Philippines.” Now, they have decided to take a break and follow solo projects. “Before I met DK, I was singing as a solo performer in a famous Philippino TV show.” Claudio does not rule out an El Duo reunion, “You never know what will happen in future- if someone wants El Duo for a special show and we both are available, why not?” They remain close friends and help and support each other as they experience a new path. 12

Claudio’s latest singles, ‘Why Do I Cry’ and ‘God Sent You To Me’ have been hits on I-tunes and there are great videos of both on YouTube. He wrote the words and music. “It takes time and you must be in the right mood to compose and write good lyrics.” This thoughtful artist says that he is inspired by his daily life, experience and feelings but does not discuss his private life, “As an artist you perform always as single. In my position, you perform also illusions. Relationships are more private and separated from the music I perform. Nevertheless, I am happy in my private life at the moment.”

Claudio sees being gay as having no impact on his music or his fans. “It makes no difference what sexual preference people have- they love my music. All fans and friends are welcome.” Those fans are growing in number, as Claudio is due in Germany, Holland and England. “I had a record in the Philippines before coming to Thailand and have been in some TV shows and even a movie, and I would love to one day win an award for my music.” He describes his style as, “Pop, ballad, a touch of jazz, R&B and alternative,” and sees himself as an original: “I don’t copy anybody even though; there are singers that I idolize. I still sing the way I am, as my father advised me. I must have my own originality and style. My father was a singer. They said he sang like Tom Jones, but he didn’t think he was Tom Jones! Real artists have their own identity, own style, own mark in singing performance. Therefore, people will recognize and remember me as Claudio and not Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga.”

Claudio dreams of recording a track with his favourite singers, Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion and says that live performance is the most fulfilling aspect of his life. Europe and San Francisco are the places he would most like to visit but there will always be a special welcome for him here in Thailand. You can follow Claudio on Facebook, learn more about him at soundcloud.com/Claudio-songs or buy the music on I-tunes or Amazon MP3. 13

Trafalgar & Josh Terence Teasdale has completed his first novel, which launched with a bang at Pattaya’s ‘The Venue’. Ray Cornell hosted brilliantly and a huge crowd of the great and the good were treated to readings from the book, cabaret and music that was especially composed by George Grey, inspired by this moving tale of self-discovery. James Barnes spoke to the author in his Pattaya home.

psychiatrist and a beautiful but damaged young man. Set in Thailand and Australia, it details the doctor’s brittle affiliation with an estranged and bitter wife, his ambivalent adult children and the fighting acceptance of a collapsed career. Clearly, art and life are very close and although Terence insists that the book is a work of fiction, it is based on his own experience. He has written textbooks but this is his first novel. “I am excited to be moving in to a new era,” he says. “I have always loved words

relationships which have changed in construct even over the last 50 years. Observing friends and their boyfriends in gay relationships all over the world is pondered in the novel- the psyche of people. “ Terence Teasdale feels that Trafalgar & Josh is part of the patterns in all our lives and hopes that the notions of gay relationships will be demystified. “Here in Pattaya, many young gay guys have no role models and have to listen to the mythology of their cohorts when parallel relationships should be the goal. The relationship in the book ends tragi-

Terence Teasdale designed it himself. It is grand but homely, well thought out and furnished with wonders of Thai artisanship and woodwork, shipped down from Chiang Mai. Terence is clearly a man of many talents. Born in England, he says that he’s, “Old enough!” when asked about his age, his eyes twinkling with mischief. He is an adventurer and maybe a rebel too. Expelled from two schools, this sportloving guy remembers a devoted family; his father presented him with a Lambretta motorscooter when he was just 16. Terence jumped on the pillion and took 14

himself off to Spain. “I was raped by an Egyptian in Valencia!” he declares. The author married an Australian woman he met in Switzerland and had three children before he fell in love with a young Maltese guy- the marriage ended and a ten year love story ensued. Terence had visited Thailand many times for work and always intended to move here, a dream that came true just two years ago. To engage the readers’ imagination has been a great challenge.” Fellow author, Peter Rodgers, says: ‘Trafalgar & Josh is a brilliantly written, pacy and moving tale of self-discovery... a roller coaster ride of ambition, love, lust, obsession and heartbreak as its central character confronts those forces which are all too human and which change his life forever.’ “As one ages,” says Terence, “one accumulates experience, especially in

Now it is finished, it feels satisfying.” But Terence is not resting on his laurels; he has already completed a health guide book, ‘Aging Successfully’ and he is busy working on his next novel.”I have learned so much writing Trafalgar & Josh and I can’t wait to put that to use in my next book.” Trafalgar & Josh is available at good book stores and online shop at www.outin-thailand.com 15

Lukas Habersaat runs Tarntawan Place Hotel, Dick’s Café Bangkok, Balls, The Sports Bar, Tarntawan Apartments and Dick’s Café Jomtien. He started his career in Switzerland as an apprentice chef and then became a waiter at several 5 Star Hotels. He studied Hotel Management and then went to Monaco for an internship in a 5 Star Hotel. In 1988, he moved to Hong Kong’s famous Mandarin Oriental in several management positions and ending as Special Projects Manager. During his stay in Hong Kong, he participated in staff outings to Thailand, along with Mike Pearson; they both fell in love with Thailand, after visiting Bangkok, Pattaya and Koh Samui.

In April of 1992 he and Mike (who has since passed away) took over as business partners in Tarntawan Place. Back then, it was a basic hotel, with very few amenities. One of the first things they did was to add the restaurant. After extensive remodelling over the years, Tarntawan Place has become a jewel on Surawong Road, with that famous “touch of class”.

16

In 1998, it was time to expand. Duangthawee Plaza was a small Soi, with only a few bars and just one go-go. There they opened Dick’s Café Bangkok. Back then, it was not known as a “gay” Soi, but over the years, more and more gay go go bars opened, and today it is “the” gay go go Soi. Open from 11 am for lunch, they serve up great Thai and International food until 2 am. Locals go there about 7 to watch the young men starting to arrive at the go go bars. The cocktails are great, and you have to try the hamburgers! In September 2004, they decided the time was right to move into Pattaya. At that time, Jomtien Complex was almost a ghost town; the only gay venue was Darby Massage. Over the years, Jomtien Complex has grown and is very popular worldwide. Dick’s Café Jomtien is the place to meet after the beach. Offering the same Thai and International Cuisine as in Bangkok, they have become a Pattaya landmark. In 2005, Lukas and Mike took over the Tarntawan Apartments- right next to the hotel. The studio and one bedroom accommodation feature everything you need for an extended stay in Bangkok. Options are available- selfcatering or as pampered as you want. All apartments are equipped with built-in kitchen and quality dining, living area and bedroom furniture. In 2006 they opened Balls, The Sports Bar, in Duangthawee Plaza, just a short walk from Dick’s. Open from 5 pm daily, they have a great choice of beers and beverages. You can watch your favourite sporting action on their oversized flat screen TV. 17

Lukas has been involved in both Bangkok and Pattaya Gay Pride since both of their inceptions. Lukas, DJ Station and Khun Pakorn started up Bangkok Pride in 1999, funding the operations the first few years. The first Bangkok Pride was Halloween 1999. Lukas later became involved in Pattaya Pride, with Dick’s Café Jomtien as a major sponsor, helping to bring Jomtien Complex into the celebrations, along with the fabulous beach parties. Lukas and his boyfriend of 9 years, Khun Chart, manager of Dick’s Café Jomtien, were married 3 years ago in Switzerland. Who knows what is next for Lukas? The past 2 years have been challenging in Thailand for all business. The Tarntawan Place has just been refurbished with a new hot water system, painting and new carpet throughout. 18

Tarntawan Place is a great choice in Bangkok. The commitment and dedication of their International management team and fine Thai staff has become world-renowned. In their quest for total customer satisfaction, the emphasis remains on guaranteeing the comfort and atmosphere expected for a perfect stay. Situated in a quiet courtyard off Surawong Road, with ample parking, in the heart of Bangkok’s business and entertainment district, the Tarntawan Place is within walking distance  of international banks, major companies and shopping centres. Bangkok’s best nightlife venues are just around the corner, including the famous Patpong Night Bazaar and bars, the Japanese bars and restaurants of Thaniya Plaza [“Little Tokyo”], and the gay hotspots of Soi Pratuchai, Silom Soi 2, Silom Soi 2/1, Silom Soi 4 and Soi 6.

The Tarntawan Place is well established among the boutique range of accommodation that has become the choice of the discerning 21st century traveller. Unwind in the comfort and style of their attractively decorated rooms and suites, generously  appointed with full amenities. They understand the importance of your ‘home away from home’. All rooms include a spacious working area, IDD phone, cable/satellite TV, free Wi-Fi Internet access, fully stocked personal bar and fridge, coffee/tea making facilities and separate bathroom with a bathtub and hair dryer. Deluxe Surawong Rooms and Suites offer superior bedding, fruit and flowers, bathrobes and slippers, turndown service and DVD/music player. The Tarntawan Place presents a package of special privileges, which are all included in the room rate. Be sure to join them for the free weekly management cocktail receptions. Enjoy the relaxed ambiance of their spacious Lobby Lounge Restaurant, which offers a wide variety of Thai and International cuisine. Breakfast and the full complement of their menu are available 24 hours. This helps with those “time zone” difficulties. Sip a pleasant cocktail while relaxing and reading in the Lobby, or use their Business Centre. Lukas is a classy guy and that touch of class is the hallmark of his enterprises.

All Change at Chiang Mai’s Soho Scott Taylor, doyen of Chiang Mai’s Soho Bar and Guesthouse has sold up and moved on. James Barnes met the new owners, gay couple Shauna and Rabbit and discovered an amazing personal story of change and renewal.

Shauna Pugh fusses about her desk and apologises for the chaos, “We’re still getting ourselves organised,” she says, moving a printer that sits between us. She relaxes as we chat and a sheepish smile appears incongruous as she reveals her remarkable story of tenacity and courage. Born male, she endured the agony of gender reassignment surgery in Bangkok back in 2003. “The pain was unbearable,” she recalls, “but it was worth it. Waking up and knowing ‘it’ was gone was just like being born again.” It took a year to recover and there were the inevitable difficulties with her family: “At times, they just couldn’t handle it but after so many years, they just had to.” 20

Shauna, 49, is from New Orleans and was there during the horror of hurricane Katrina, “New Orleans has the second largest gay community in the US,” she says. “I owned a guesthouse in the French quarter (gay area) there but when I came to Thailand in 1999, I knew this was the place for me.” That experience will ensure that Soho will continue to be a firm Chiang Mai favourite. “My Dad is gay,” she says with a giggle, “And he discovered Soho Bar and told me that I had to buy it!” She decided to open a business here in December 2010: “That’s how long I’ve been begging Scott to sell and eventually I caught him at the right moment.” Scott says that he has mixed emotions about leaving and has not yet decided what he will do in the future. His only plan is an immediate holiday on Koh Samui after he has shown Shauna and Rabbit the ropes.

“The bar will stay the same,” explains Shauna, “but although we will continue to serve Thai food from the Lemon Tree, I am going to start serving some New Orleans dishes.” Shauna is an accomplished chef, proud of her gumbo! “It is the Guesthouse side of the business that I want to develop,” she says. Soho Bar and Guesthouse enjoys a perfect location and under her expert guidance, is sure to succeed. At her side is her charming Thai partner, Rabbit. “I really enjoy the social side of this business,” says Shauna, “and we want to bring the gay Thai and foreign community together,” she smiles at Rabbit, “We can be the seed for that.” 21

Part 2; Building Trust By Dodger

It should not come as a surprise that I ranked “Trust-Building” as the most critical factor, which Thep and I would have to cultivate if we were to have any chance at making it work. I follow a simple set of rules: Never lie to him (even when the truth has its consequences) – do not promise him anything I do not fully intend on giving him. Don’t treat him as my #1 boy, but as my only boyfriend, and prove through my actions that my feelings for him and the commitments I have made to him are unconditional. It took several years before he actually realized that what the mamasans had told him did not apply to all farangs. Then, and only then did we actually start to bond. One of the most difficult hurdles I had to overcome during my relationship-building endeavour was ME! I was forced to take a serious personal inventory to 22

determine what exactly was the driving force behind this totally illogical desire to have a relationship with a boy who is less than half my age. Not to mention the fact that he lives 10,000 miles away, worked as a prostitute, wears lipstick and a dress and believes that by sticking a bunch of candles around a dead chicken and leaving it rot on the balcony for 3 rising suns, somehow repels the evil spirits who lurk around every corner. Or that these farang/Thai boy relationships have a high failure rate. I was faced with one of two options regarding my interest in a relationship: A), Find a guy closer to my own age, with whom I could relate on an intellectual basis and who would present a much higher possibility of success without all the headaches. Or, B), find a young Thai guy who is less than half

my age, with whom I have absolutely nothing in common and where success would rely on nothing short of a miracle. I want you all to know that I gave this a great deal of consideration. 30 seconds later, I decided on Option B.

preparation, etc.. At my request, we had a larger wedding party than was originally planned which included the entire village where I spent about 30,000 baht on a feast for 300 people, booze for all the farm workers, Isaan musicians, etc.

When Thep walked away from the working scene to enter into this relationship with me , he cut his earning capacity by approximately 70%, as the financial support I provide to him and his family amounts to a car payment. The money we used to build the family house was a joint effort combining my money with the money Thep had saved when we were together during my periods in Thailand. It took us 2 years to save enough to complete the house. His parents sponsored our wedding and handled all the arrangements; invitations, getting the ministers, blessing sessions with the monks, food

Thep is the most remarkable person I have ever met, and entering into a relationship with him has resulted in the best years of my life. The many problems we have had together during this adventure have been far outweighed by the pleasures and it will only get better as time moves forward. I know that many of you are not sure of that – but I am, and that’s all that really matters. Next Month: Part 3, Missing the Missing Register free at www.out-in-thailand.com to read Part 1. 23

The Doggy Position They say that humanity is divided neatly into two: cat people and dog people. OUT iT has never been into pussy, so Cesar Millan, The Dog Whisperer, is clearly a favourite. Airing in two-hour doggie dollops on National Geographic (True Visions ch. 19), Cesar’s eyes twinkle and smile dazzles as he tames man’s best friend.

This Mexican American who entered the US illegally, is now fully legit and has really hit pay dirt with a canine empire that cashes in on the ignorance of dog owners. Pet pooches are the world’s number one choice as hairy pals and it is truly 26

amazing how dense their owners can be. They appeal to the appealing Cesar in their thousands in the hope that he will come visit them and cure their canine charges of the problems that dog them.

Rover runs away. Fido’s off his food. Pluto’s pissing on the porch. Tyson’s trashing the house. You get the picture. In comes Mr Millan, the leader of the pack, and in moments, he has them under his control. The ‘them’ here are the owners. For it is they who need the training, it is the owner who has allowed the pet to become top dog and kennel master. “It’s not about the dog. It’s always about us. It’s always about the owner. It’s up to us to create an environment and circumstances in which the dog can thrive and be itself,” he insists, the Colgate smile never fading. With his calm assertive philosophy that produces a calm submissive animal, he

teaches how to project the correct energy and reminds that anthropomorphism is a mistake. Guess what? You have to treat a dog like a dog. “Humans are the only animals who will follow unstable pack leaders,” says Cesar, who is not known for his political insights. At this point, your faithful correspondent with the 16:9 aspect ratio eyes, reports that his Thai boyfriend regards The Dog Whisperer with deep reverence, as though Millan is a mystical being, charged with supernatural powers in a dog eat dog world. If only Cesar would come here to sort out the Soi dogs, driving insomniacs barking mad.

OUT on TV EXTRA! With precious little dedicated gay TV on the small screen, the internet takes up the slack… IN BETWEEN MEN is a Change in The Right Direction By Trent Farber Photography: www.danieldottavio.com

“New York passing gay marriage is just one small step,” says Jennifer Gelfer, director of the hot gay web series, In Between Men. “We aim to take the next giant leap.”

At first glance, In Between Men doesn’t appear to be groundbreaking television. It’s often compared to Queer as Folk. But that’s a mistake. The important difference is that the Queer as Folk boys lived in an insular gay world where they ate and breathed the LGBT community. In In Between Men, the guys integrate in the mainstream world – the ‘straight’ world. They’re gay and yes, extremely attractive, but they’re everyday guys living real lives with people from all walks 28

or hold out for someone better. Benjamin Reed, played by the Adonis actor Ben Pamies, is the iconic male figure. He is what gay men want to be and be with. Oversexed and promiscuous but also intelligent and successful, Benjamin is a loving friend and family man whose looks outshine everything except his career ambition. The character of Dane, played by Chase Coleman, is the mirror opposite of Reed. He is naïve in love and his pension for chasing after bad boys gets him in trouble. “So often, gay men look outside themselves for affirmation of worth,” says Gelfer. “Gay men are not taught to love themselves. They’re told they should be something else, namely ‘straight’. Dane is a product of that. He is the American dream – blonde, hand-

We all live in a perpetual state of in-between: in between jobs, in between relationships, friends, family, lovers… “Everyone is looking for a place to belong, someone to love and a fulfilling career,” continues Gelfer. “The world needs to see that gay men are more than the stereotypical camp characters media has portrayed them to be. They need to see that gay men are no different than everyone else.” The first season of In Between Men consists of six ten-minute shows. Wa t c h them now at www. inbetweenmen. com.

of life. They’re how most gay men truly live - and the normalness portrayed on In between Men may just change the way the mainstream world views the gay community. Dalton is the lead character of In Between Men. Played by Nick Mathews, Dalton is a young man at the top of his game who finds little in common with the superficiality of most guys in the city. He struggles with a lonely love life, wondering if he should settle for Mr. Almost-Right 29

WAS JOHN HUSTON A HOMOPHOBE? by Brian Baxter

Checking some credits recently, I came aross the above question. To clarify - for anyone living on another planet- Huston was a prolific director, working mainly, though far from exclusively, in the U.S.A., of some 60 movies, the writer of many of those among others such as Sergeant York for which he received his first Oscar, a prolific actor, especially memorable in Polanski’s Chinatown. He was much married (five times, once to an alligator according to his mesmerising autobiography), the son of a great actor, Walter Huston, an ex-boxer, hell raiser, incessant cigar smoker (he died gasping for breath in Mexico, aged 81), generous to those he loved and notoriously wicked to those he despised, on and off the movie set. His finest films include The Maltese Falcon (his directorial debut), Fat City, The Man who would be King and his most famous are The African Queen and The Treasure of Sierra Madre. He enjoyed sports, hunting and shooting and the good life, being opinionated, outgoing and selfish. The question remains, was he homophobic? And the second question is, who isn’t? 30

Now just before you throw up your hands and scream, NOT me honey, may I suggest you put down that cut glass tumbler full of ice, gin and Schweppes and a thick slice of citrus fruit, before you spill it over your well creased white slacks, which are not quite as slack as they should be at your age. (See what I mean, who isn’t?) Reading this in OUT iT you are quite likely gay, which Mr. Huston was not and more than capable of thrusting that message down anyone’s throat. Metaphorically speaking, of course – though not let’s forget those big Cubans. I posit the notion that we are all guilty of comments about others, which pass as witticisms or banter and may even laugh at some ghastly out dated TV comedy where the mincing lead declares, ‘I’m free.’ Worse still you might be like an American friend of mine, a defiant top (at least since choir school), who believes that all other gays are somewhat inferior. What it is to be macho. And therein rests Huston’s problem, if he had one. The message board had many comments, least attractive of which was ‘what’s wrong with homophobia?’ Nothing worse than racism seems the obvious response. As I’ve observed before in these columns, the fight for gay recogni-

tion parallels that for racial equality. Not there yet: but happily now on the winning side. Huston (1906- ’87) was the product of his times, lacking an understanding of outgoing gays. In that odd phrase, he was a man’s man. Humphrey Bogart was his best pal and fellow macho carouser. Yet Carson McCullers, whom he sheltered at his Irish mansion during her last illness, was lesbian. In his film of her masterpiece, Reflections in a Golden Eye, he allows the character Anacleto to be shown as a dancing queen, whilst the central gay character (magnificent Marlon Brando) is sympathetically directed. In The Maltese Falcon, Peter Lorre is overtly gay and slightly sent up, but this was 1941 and way ahead of its time in depicting an integral film character who happens to be gay. The Man who would be King, depicts the best buddy-buddy relationship in cinema. Huston greatly admired Montgomery Clift’s talent, directed him in two films, and originally cast him in Reflections. Yet he despised Clift’s fascination with rough trade.

Huston worked with the gayest of writers, Truman Capote and with actor Sidney Greenstreet and let the former’s campness infuse Beat the Devil. Did he despise them too, whilst admiring their talent? He mainly directed action related movies, but did a brilliant job on melodramas such as In This Our Life with Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland. And enjoyed acting in oddities such as Candy and Myra Breckinridge and played a bi-sexual in The Other Side of the Mountain. The answer? Who knows? Probably yes, despite an innate intelligence, but no more so than tough Hollywood directors of the period and probably now. Should we make allowances for his time and for being straight? Are only we allowed to be ‘homophobic’ just as only the Irish or Jews may tell jokes about themselves? Or should we simply forgive him and be thankful for such films as those above plus Prizzi’s Honour, The Dead, Heaven Knows Mr. Alison, The Asphalt Jungle, The Unforgiven and many more? On balance his seems a small sin, compared with what is happening in the world today. 31

Dear OUT for the money, Recently, after an illness, I brought all my assets from the US and put them into Baht at the local bank. I now have several millions baht just sitting there  and I don›t need this cash as my monthly pension covers all my living expenses. I am retired and don›t want to have to worry about complicated investment.  Do you have a better suggestion as to how to improve the return over the small interest rate from the bank? Thank you for your help.  Sincerely,

Kurt W.

Hi Kurt, If you brought your assets over, that is better than leaving them in the US as it will grow faster here due to the strong currency exchange, so you’ve done the right thing! If you are living comfortably on your pension here and have no major money concerns then what you need to ask is “what do I need this money forwhat do I plan to do with it in the future?” For example , a back up to your pension if it runs out or property pur32

chase? A good idea of what you want will best determine how to allocate this money so that it’s working for you. True, the bank interest rate is minimal, however there are very simple accounts that you can link to your savings account (even in the same institution) that you can move a part of the cash into to give a better return. This can return up to double of what the bank will give on a cash deposit but with the same risk rating as the account you currently have. It’s simple, no fuss, and decent returns on your money.

Remember if this is money that you worked hard for, then let it work for you and provide a reasonable rate of return, the overall outcome should provide a steady growth where you would be living off just the gains alone- not touching the original amount. For more information of what is out there, I would recommend speaking to a professional independent broker as they will give non-biased advice based on what is perfect for your particular case. Ask Darika By Doc John

Medical tourism has become a buzz word in the trade and Thailand leads the pack of medical tourism destinations. Here are some things you should do to make your medical trip safe. Research: - Research the procedure you want; don’t arrive with unrealistic expectations. - Ask your family doctor about follow up care before your trip. - Ask about recovery time, the need for physiotherapy or drug treatments. You should choose an international hospital that is right for you: Consider: - The hospital’s reputation. - Its accreditation. - Its achievements and awards. - Physician/surgeon/dentist credentials. Family Doctor - Inform your family doctor about your decision to travel for treatment: - Visit your doctor immediately on you return. Bring Your: - Medical records, X-rays/scans – carry in your carry on luggage. - Passport and valid visa. 34

-C redit and debit cards, sufficient local currency. -D river’s licence. Take Back: -Y our new records. Information: -E mergency contacts family and friends’ names and telephone numbers. - Inform your embassy in Bangkok. - T ell your employer also. Length of Stay: -C omplications happen, be prepared to stay longer than expected. -Y ou may recover quickly and be discharged sooner than expected. Agents: - Medical tourism companies are specialised middlemen connecting you to a suitable hospital. They take the stress out of arranging your admission by making appointments, meeting and greeting, immigration information, ticketing and possibly travel insurance. They have information on the hospital as well as patient feedback and comments. A net search will list these companies.

Dear Darika, Big fan here. I admit to being one of those who reads your column aloud to friends. You are brilliant! I am a frequent business traveler to Bangkok, where I have been maintaining a serious relationship with a guy I met in a club several years ago. He was #17, which has always been a lucky number for me. I have put him through English classes and he is now working in a department store. Now that we have been “together” for several years I want to show him off to my family. I want him to see New York and experience another culture. Plenty of people have been full of advice about how to go about getting a visa. Rather than blundering through this, I thought it best to seek your wise counsel. Love, Bob in Brooklyn

Dear Bob, Thanks for being a fan. Darika does not pretend to be an expert at anything except making the perfect Bombay Martini, so when it comes to immigration issues all I can do is share my own personal experiences in addition to what I have learned from others. First, it’s safe to assume that most countries in the developed world have similar policies about granting visas. That said, I have seen the most improbable applicants granted visas while others who are educated, well employed and have good reason to return to Thailand have been turned away. I have tried for years to get to the bottom of the secret methods, algorithms, or magical divinations embassies use to decide who is lucky and who is to suffer rejection. My former BF and I attempted the arduous feat of getting a U.S. visa twice. Mistakes were made the first time. Because he had everything going for him, however, we waited a year and a half to try again. I wanted him to see the Golden Gate Bridge, Costco, and Castro Street and spend time with my mother. So we fed a bank account in his name every month until it was plump and made him a director of my company. (Yes, Darika is among the ranks of the employed.) We got invitation letters from reputable people, including a well-known member of San Francisco city government. One of my staff who was among the lucky few to get a visa coached him about how to handle the interview. For a second time the BF queued up at 06:30, waited nearly four hours for his 35

number to be called, and within 45 seconds a guy behind bullet-proof glass affixed another “boyfriends not welcome” stamp into his passport. He claimed not to be disappointed, but he put his passport through the shredder a second time. Rules and procedures are quite clear. However, even if you follow them flawlessly, it is clear that many western nations do not want Thai homosexuals running around loose in their countries. Such people might actually end up taking away a job from a minimum-wage waiter in a Thai restaurant, which would result in the complete collapse of law, order and society. If you do not mind the trouble and expense, go ahead and try to get #17 a visa. However, be prepared for disappointment unless you can produce a highly-paid job, a wife, children and a mother who is dying of cancer. What may be a disappointment for you might possibly a devastating for #17’s self esteem if he is labeled “not good enough.”

day after the deadline for this month’s column. Darika has removed all of her rings so that she can cross as many fingers as possible for this lad. However, he has paid off the police, and many more paws will be outstretched before his debacle is resolved, if ever. I hope that he can get on with his life in happiness, but that seems less likely as he falls ever deeper into systemic corruption.

Like pretty plants, most boyfriends are best admired ‘in situ;” in other words, in their natural habitat. I will not be trying the visa thing again. Actually, Darika has very few reasons to return, except for Mom and Costco (and not necessarily in that order). Good luck! OUT in Bangkok B

Bangkok is the frenzied hub of Thailand. The Skytrain and MRT (subway) have made it much easier to get around, taxis, tuk-tuks, buses and motorcycle taxis are plentiful. There are many markets, glitzy malls, beautiful temples and museums, as well as the bars and shows for which the city is famous.

Recommended Attractions: • Jim Thompson’s Houses • National Museum/Wang Na Palace with its excellent exhibits for a slice of Thai history • Wat Arun for breathtaking views of Bangkok and Chayo Phraya River • Grand Palace/Wat Phra Kaew with its amazing Emerald Buddha, colourful mosaics and glittering spires • Wat Pho, Bangkok’s oldest temple and home of the Reclining Buddha • Wat Traimitr (Golden Buddha)

Road. Everything is within easy walking distance. Silom is the main gay area. Silom’s Soi 2, Soi 2/1 and Soi 4 are close to the BTS Skytrain (Sala Daeng) and MRT Subway Silom) stations. Silom Soi 4 offers a more relaxed atmosphere with its mix of clubs, restaurants and bars. Telephone Pub, The Balcony and Sphinx all serve food and some have ‘happy hour’ and monthly promotions. A two-minute walk from Soi 4 is Silom Soi 2/1, where local expats and Thai guys congregate for dinner and drinks at Richard’s Pub & Restaurant and later at G.O.D. nightclub. Silom Soi 2 features gay disco, DJ Station, for the hip crowd. An entertaining mini cabaret show launches the fun around 23:00. Facing DJ Station, Expresso is a place to cool off and reenergize.  Disco Disco is another party palace. Between Silom and Sathorn Road, there are several massage salons. Soi Duangth39

Stop in at Dick’s Café or Maxis Restaurant on Soi Duangthawee for some great food before hitting the bars. The world famous Babylon Sauna and hotel is on Soi Nantha (off Sathorn Soi 1). Lose all track of time in the sauna, steam rooms, playrooms, bars, restaurants, swimming pool, gym, hair salon, reading lounge and internet room. Babylon is extremely popular among Thais, expats and visitors, so expect weekends to be busy. College-aged Thai men and business professionals go to Ramkhamhaeng (Lamsalee) and Kamphaeng Pet Road. Soi 89/2 draws thousands of university students, working professionals, and those that just like a good time. The most popular places are Club 9 Café, ICK Pub, See Men, Crazy Dance Club, and Lamsalee Dance Pub. Although it is probably 98% Thai, the foreigners are welcome as long as they remain polite. OUT in Chiang Mai C

Chiang Mai is known as ‘The Rose of The North.’ Steeped in history, this ancient capital of the Lanna Kingdom nestles in bucolic beauty and is blessed with a milder climate than most Thai holiday destinations- a feature that attracts Thais and foreign tourists, especially for the February Flower Festival, Songkran in April, Loy Krathong in November and New Year revellers. Great retail therapy is available at Central Airport Plaza and the walking street market on the Rachamadoen Road, every Sunday.

The Old City, just 2.25 sq Kms, is guarded by a moat with floodlit fountains and remnants of the archaic red brick city walls that form a perfect square with gates at the cardinal points. The atmosphere is tranquil and the charms of cobbled lanes, countless temple courtyards and the distinctive Lanna architecture with its multi-layered roofs, are irresistible. Chiang Mai is known as the cultural Capital of Thailand because of the bounty of handicrafts, exciting arts scene, writer’s club, galleries and bewildering choice of restaurants, bars and live music venues. Gay Life The two main Gay centres are outside moat. The Chang Pueak neighbourhood, north of the moat is where you will find The Spirit House Restaurant & Bar that 50

serves Thai and western food, with a soundtrack of classical music and a collection of fascinating antiques, many of which are for sale. Nearby you will find the Circle Pub and Freeguy host bars. Adam’s Apple Club has a sensational show and a collection of beautiful guys above the sophisticated Metro Bar which is at street level. Just across the road is Lotus Hotel & Garden Bar, the first gay hotel in the city and an established Chiang Mai institution. On the Changpueak Road, The Playhouse Theatre is Chiang Mai’s newest attraction. This lavish venue showcases famous pieces from international musicals, performing art, and dance shows. Niammanhaemin and Santitham has some of the most expensive real estate outside of Bangkok and a hip and hap-

pening scene of bars (don’t miss the very gay friendly Glass Onion), boutiques and coffee shops. Krits is a popular gay restaurant next to rainbow bar, La Vie en Rose- just off the Huay Kaew Road where you will find the Soho Bar and Guesthouse and SoupaSteak Restaurant/Darlings Wine Bar. For a work out or chill out, go to The House of Male is open from midday to midnight with pool, steam room, gym, friendly male staff, private rooms, bar and food. Tuesday and Thursday are ‘Buddy Nights’ where entrance is two for the price of one- very popular with students from the local university. Nearby is the long established PJ’s Place guesthouse, renowned for sweet and personal service. Santitham is not far with many new eateries, guesthouses, bars

and coffee shops, including Thai restaurant/guesthouse, Sabaidee Santitham. On the east side of the city, on the bank of the River Ping is Club One Seven which offers great accommodation, bar, sauna, pool and gym in a complex comprising two traditional Thai teak houses that feels like a rural retreat. Nearby you will find the excellent Blues Club Massage for a truly personal service in Lanna luxury. Getting around Travelling around the city is easy. Choose from Thai tuk-tuks (negotiate the fares first), songtaews (red pickup covered trucks, with two rows of bench seating, patrol the main routes charging a flat rate of 20 baht per person within the city limits and longer journey fares negotiable) and yellow-metered taxis.

Phuket has two big, but very different show/cabaret theatres: Simon Cabaret in Patong Beach is known for one of the best ladyboy shows in Thailand. The show is regularly updated and tickets can be bought almost anywhere. The 21.30 pm performance may be best as large tour groups often occupy the earlier shows. Phuket Fantasia in Kamala is an indoor theatre, which seats several thousand and tells the spectacular story of the Prince of Kamala. Watch out for elephants and aerial acrobatics! 60

Visit Promthep Cape, the southernmost point of Phuket and is especially beautiful around sunset, the Big Buddha overlooking Chalong Bay, which is over 25 meters wide and 45 meters high, adorned with 135 ton of white jade marble, and nearby Wat Chalong. There are nature parks, waterfalls and diving, snorkeling and sailing. Shop ‘til you drop in modern air conditioned malls in Phuket Town as well as in the main beach resort of Patong Beach. Phuket Town has a charm of its own, especially the old ChinesePortuguese quarter. 61

The epicentre of gay life on Phuket is Patong Beach, largely concentrated at the base of the towering Royal Paradise Hotel, called Paradise Complex. The main gay venues are situated on the exit road out of Paradise Complex, with most of the gay (friendly) hotels & guesthouses, and cabaret/go-go bars, a gay sauna, disco’s, go-go and host bars, restaurants, bars, karaoke bars, etc. Cabaret shows are in 3 go-go bars of which My Way is the oldest and biggest, as well as Tangmo and Yes (formerly Dempsey’s) totally refitted and styled, and 2 disco’s, Kiss Club and Boat Bar. This last one has just finished a total makeover. The shows at the 3 go-go bars are mainly later in the evening and at the disco’s after midnight. A lot of effort is put in these shows, and most patrons bounce from one to the next. Also popular are the outdoor “Beer Bars” of which the most popular now are Sundowners and Connect (which also serves western and Thai food all day), also My Way, Time Bar and James Dean & Friends. The more upscale, lounge style bars are CHIC and Orchid Lounge, which are located oppo-

site each other. Let’s not forget the outdoor bars of Kiss and Boat Bar. Kiss has a lively outdoor set-up while Boat Bar is known for its friendly atmosphere. We can also recommend Knud’s Bar next to Spartacus massage. The newest bar, Temptasian, is on the main walk way into the complex, along with the famous massage house for men, Blue Dolphin. For all the venues, check out our map of Paradise Complex. Outside Paradise Complex, there are some gay and gay friendly venue’s worth the visit. Among them the oldest gay venue, the go-go/karaoke bar Superboys in Soi Yaiyui (roughly half way between the gay beach and Paradise Complex). Next to them is cafe/bar The Backstage, which also serves good Thai fast food, coffee and is slowly starting to build its own little cabaret show. Near Paradise is James Dean Bar, roughly behind Paradise, and a little further away, the recently refurbished Club One Seven guesthouse with their friendly helpful staff and restaurant, excellent coffee corner and bar.

OUT in Koh Samui W

With jungle covered craggy hills, lush coconut plantations, and quiet beaches, balmy evenings Koh Samui is the perfect place to kick back, recharge and of course party a little. Samui is Thailand’s third largest island with a Thai population of 50,000 an area of 228 sq km thus Samui is considerably smaller than Phuket, 570 sq km or Singapore 699 sq km.

Samui is a rapidly growing gay holiday destination especially for romantic couples where gay life is a relaxing, quieter, fun contrast to the exuberant gay life of Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. As the spa capital of the region Samui is also the perfect place to indulge yourself in affordable massage and body treatments. For gay men the Emerald Green Mens Club in north Chaweng is the premier gay only destination for high quality, man 4 man massage and body treatments, they also provide their services in the spa at the super chic X2 Resort Samui, south of Lamai. 70

The most popular way to get about on Samui is self-ride motorbike, rental cars are available and hotels can arrange drivers. Taxis are notoriously expensive but songtaew pick-up trucks are a cheap de facto public bus service. If you want a tour around Samui or go diving with a gay guide, contact Rainbow Scuba & Tour. There is plenty of eye candy on the many idyllic beaches around the island.

When you feel hungry there is a huge variety of places to eat, from top of the bill restaurants to cheap eateries and Thai market stalls. Check out eating options in OUT iT Magazine or on the website at the end of this article or cruise the Internet; your hotel will have a copy of the Samui dining guide. The center of gay day/night life on Samui is Chaweng. Most gay businesses hang off the 3-4 kilometre long Chaweng Beach Road, so taking this road from the north end opposite the Nora Beach Resort is the Emerald Green Mens Club, Samui’s leading gay spa for quality massage and herbal body treatments. Further down the road in the main part of town, behind Starbucks is K Club, a lively small gay bar with take away staff. In south Chaweng is Boy Zone bar at the end of a soi opposite the Centara Grand Beach Resort, a bar with a gay/mixed crowd, take away staff and an 11.30 pm show. In the same soi is Tropical Fah Samui for gay massage, body treatments, facials etc. Samui has two cabaret clubs, both in central Chaweng featuring Thai ladyboy and gay lip-synch performers. Starz Cabaret above the entrance to Khun Chaweng Resort pumps out a classy, fast paced show while just past the north end Starbucks is Moulin Rouge, recently expanded and refurbished. Shows for both are daily, kick in about 8.30 pm with bar service and free entry. Over the hill in Lamai, opposite Holiday Park Resort is Sabai Bar a gay/mixed bar open daily from 5 pm. If dancing, drinking and cruising is your number, remember Chaweng is a late hour party town. From midnight Thai and Farang gays head to Green Mango and

Sweet Soul bars in central Chaweng for a diet of loud music, mixed crowds, no frills bar service, daily until 3 am. Out of town on the ring road close to Makro is Mekkala Men Spa an intimate massage business run by long established Samui resident, Khun AJ. A short distance further on in Mae Nam is gK Men’s spa close to Bandara Resort for a range of massage styles and treatments. Pick up a copy of OUT in Thailand magazine at any gay venue for an accurate gay Samui map and venue listings. There are no gay hotels on Samui. There are a wide range of accommodation options from famous brand name hotels through to exclusive private villas or simple, Samui style bungalows and good quality, gay only, owner occupied B&Bsomething for all needs. Check out the options on the website below or search the Internet. Websites for all the gay businesses in this guide and more detailed information on gay accommodation, bars, restaurants, massage, things to do, what to be aware of @ www.gaykohsamui.net & www. gaykohsamui.com 71

Happy Hour

Pattaya has a bustling, vibrant scene 24 hours a day. Shopping starts at sumptuous malls- Central Festival, Royal Garden, Mike’s Plaza and The Avenue. For the Movies, cinemas abound. For dining, there’s a range of restaurants suiting all tastes and budgets, from local street stalls, to five star gourmet haut cuisine. Water sports include diving, jet skiing and parasailing. Try Gokarting or bungee jumping or a massage at one of the many salons. There are many gyms and exercise facilities.

Just some sample highlights around Pattaya; Pattaya Elephant Village has guided tours through the jungle on elephant back, ox cart, rafting, and much more. Nong Nooch Tropical Garden has beautiful landscaped gardens and amazing panoramas. Don’t miss the French Garden and Orchid display. Also daily cultural and elephant shows as well as a charming zoo at this “Chelsea Flower Show” winning Garden. Tiffany’s and Alcazar Ladyboy cabaret shows, both on second road, are a feast of glamour and

glitz. Tiffany’s in particular is energetic and tours the world with its spectacular show. The crystal clear waters of Koh Larn, are 45 minutes by ferry. This island, the nearest to Pattaya of many, offers relaxation in the most tropical of styles.

Gay Pattaya In the day time, you can play at the gay beach at Jomtien. Dong Tan Beach is a short ride from Pattaya. Here you can relax in deckchairs or on loungers, and be waited on all day. It is, however, in the evening when the city comes truly alive. The longest established gay area is Boyztown. Here, and in the adjacent Pattayaland, you can find a selection of 25 establishments. The illuminated sign of Boyztown is the adopted logo for Gay Pattaya. Boyz Boyz Boyz is the oldest and original male gogo bar in Pattaya and their show is a “must see”. The Copa Showbar has an exciting, twice nightly, cabaret show and a unique erotic underwater show. Funny Boys Gogo has recently been voted the best gay venue in Pattaya. Panorama Pub at the end of Boyztown is the place for “watching”. The stylish Wild West Boys presents two shows nightly is not to be missed. In Soi 3, check out the excellent Happy Place Bar where you’ll find gorgeous guys and plenty of special promotions. The Sunee Plaza area, with almost 50 assorted establishments, is the largest of Pattaya’s gay nightlife zones. It’s a vibrant and energetic area with lots of fun and enjoyment on offer, whatever your tastes. The trademark neon sign of Krazy Dragon will lure you into the “Number one male table top dancing bar”. Mike’s Bar La Cage on Soi V.C. is now an institution, with its parties - one a week in high season. Corner Bar has been open almost as long as Sunee and now has an authentic “Texas” feel and offers Texan snacks. Wonderland, Sunee Plaza’s cabaret show bar has twice nightly shows at 10pm and 12pm. Often described as being “more earthy” than Boyztown, Sunee Plaza is well worth getting to know.

The third main gay area, over the headland in Jomtien, is the Jomtien Complex. Here you can find a variety of gay bars, restaurants, and hotels. The Venue is the flagship hotel, and cabaret show bar, with regular new spectacular shows. Of the many beer bars particularly notable are Question Mark Bar and Two Faces. Some of the bars also offer massage services and there are two specialist massage houses. You might like to try the newly opened Ganymede bar with its guest rooms above. Finally, for the true Night Owls, Pattaya offers a selection of world class late night discos.
