Industry Hills Golf Club

Rustic Canyon Golf Club

1 Industry Hills Pkwy, City of Industry, CA 91744 (626) 810-4653 • www.ihgolfclub.com

15100 Happy Camp Canyon Rd., Moorpark, CA 93021 (805) 530-0221 • www.rusticcanyongolfcourse.com

The game’s greatest players have graced these greens making it a destination for more than 25 years. It is perhaps best known for its long, gracious fairways. At the same time, the club features a history as long as its landscape. Industry Hills counts itself as one of the oldest and most prestigious public courses on the West Coast. Thirty-six holes of championship golf spanning 650 acres are found on the Dwight D. Eisenhower and Babe Didrikson Zaharias courses. Both are considered among the best layouts in Southern California. Novices and professionals alike marvel at the unique layout including 160 sand bunkers, eight lakes, and a endless horizon of large undulating bent grass greens.

Rustic Canyon is a tribute to the very roots of the game with a lay-of-the-land creation by Hanse Golf Design. Hanse Golf shaped the large contoured, free-form green complexes and sculpted the bunkers from the natural landscape preserving and incorporating into the design the native barrancas. The canyon hills are dotted with sagebrush, cactus, waves of brome and stipa grass highlighted by a few picturesque oaks. Rustic Canyon is an exercise in restraint with flat, wide-open fairways that fade into the native surroundings and bunkers edged with shaggy eyebrows of thick, drooping fescue. The ground game is critical as the greens play to a bump & run approach. Rustic Canyon is a strategic course for golfers who savor the discovery of a proper approach position on an expansive fairway to best attack the green depending on the pin location.

Camp Pendleton. That name is heard daily on both local and national news but very few people know just where it is located or, for that matter, what it is. The history of the base starts way back in the early Forties when both the Army and the Marine Corps were searching for an area to create a large training facility. In 1942, 122,798 acres located in Rancho Santa Margarita y Los Flores were transformed into the largest Marine Corps base in the country. On September 25, 1942, Franklin D. Roosevelt officially dedicated the base. In October of 1944 the base was declared a “permanent installation” and in 1946 became the home of the 1st Marine Division. Camp Pendleton is named after Marine General Joseph Henry Pendleton (1860-1942). A $20 million upgrade and expansion went into effect during the Korean War which included the creation of Camp Horno. During that period approximately 200,000 Marines passed through the base on their way to Korea and later Vietnam. In the ensuing years Camp Pendleton has continued to grow. Recently efforts

www.whfchiro.com have been put into place to preserve the history of founders of the base. That culminated in the recognition of the original ranch house as a National Historic Site. Today, Camp Pendleton spans over 125,000 acres and plays host not only to the Marines, but all branches of the U.S. military. The coastline (17 miles) is used for amphibious shore-to-shore training. The main base located in the Mainside Complex has a daytime population that can exceed 100,000. Camp Pendleton remains the last undeveloped portion of the Southern California coastline and acts as a gateway between Orange County and San Diego County. In 1954, the camp started hosting Basic Training familiarization for teens between the ages of 14 and 17. They are referred to as the “Devil Pups.” The training focuses on fitness, discipline, love of country and the Marine Corps. It is a program that is still in effect to this day. So the next time that you take the I-5 on your way to Sea World or Disneyland just remember, that empty area of undeveloped land that you are coasting through is a training ground for many fine young men and women who have served and are still serving your country today.

California Poppy

The California Poppy was declared the state flower of California in 1903. Its scientific name is Eschsholtzia californica. A naturalist, Adelbert Von Chamisso named this unique flower. Von Chamisso had sailed to San Francisco discovering hills populated with this golden beauty. Throughout the history of this flower it has been used for food and to produce oil. During the spring season pollen is collected from this flower.

Manufacturers used this collection of poppy pollen to create a wide array of cosmetics distributed world wide by top cosmetics companies. The California Poppy is not indigenous to one area. The plant is found in Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, the state of Washington and California areas near Mexico. They are also found beyond Mexican borders in Sonora. The plant is known for adapting to its surroundings. It is drought resistant. This wildflower is fast growing and will span out for miles. The plant itself is only two inches in height with one flower per stem. In the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve is 1745 acres of land covered completely by these wildflowers. The days of May 13th through 18th are considered California Poppy Week. This tradition began in 1996. The middle of May is considered wildflower season at which time the beautiful flowers are in full bloom.

Whale Watching Every year, approximately 26,000 gray whales migrate from the frigid waters of the Arctic region to the warmer waters off of Baja, California. Their migratory path is over 10,000 miles long and takes them to their customary breeding grounds. The San Diego coastline is one of their passing points on this yearly voyage, and a great place to take in this spectacle. According to the Birch Aquarium in San Diego, gray whales are most often seen off the Sand Diego coast from late December through March. At the peak of the migration, a dozen or more whales can be seen together at a time. These mammals often dive into deep waters for three to five minutes and then rise through the surface to “blow. It is common to see the whales from the coastline, and two of the best vantage points are at Cabrillo National Monument or the cliffs of Torrey Pines State Beach. Another opportunity for whale watching is aboard one of the whale watching cruises. Many charter boats offer this service from December through March, and the prices are quite reasonable, averaging about $30 for a two hour cruise.
