Getting in Shape with Warrior Training Facility

By Kristen Eleveld Working out means different things to different people. Some might go for a quick run, while others are trying new sports every day. But for two local bodybuilders, working out is all about showing up, no matter what you are able to do.

Since 1988, Troy Quick has been passionate about fitness and health. As a certified bodybuilder and former police officer, Troy doesn’t just keep himself in shape—he teaches others how to achieve their fitness goals, too.

“During the police academy, we were asked to write about what inspired us to serve,” said Troy. “My answer was simple: I wanted to help people—particularly at-risk youth.”

Troy went on to serve as a School Resource Officer, which gave him the opportunity to build relationships with struggling, underserved students. Once the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Troy realized his time with those at-risk students had become severely limited—and he decided to do something about it.

Troy began spending his weekends helping those students continue their fitness journey.

With schools closed, they met in parks, driveways, and even Troy’s own backyard. It was during one of these workout sessions that Troy told one of his students, “Real warriors train anywhere and everywhere.” That statement became the mission and foundation of what would become the Warrior Training Facility.

“We weren’t defined by a building,” said Troy.

“We were defined by resilience, discipline, and the willingness to grow regardless of circumstances.”

Once the facility was open, Troy met another local bodybuilder who had a passion for helping others—Todd Price, a business owner in the Gwinnett area.

“I really wanted Troy to succeed,” said Todd.

“After working together for a while, he invited me to be partners.”

Between Troy and Todd, a wide range of fitness skills is represented at Warrior Training Facility. Todd, who teaches boxing (among other

things), has also started working with youth who want to increase their skillset, helping them both with personal goals in addition to school and state competitions.

“It’s amazing to see a kid who struggled at first, get the help he needs, and then realize they can do it,” said Todd. “The most meaningful transformation occurs when a person moves from believing ‘I can’t’ to ‘I can.’”

If you want to get fit but aren’t quite at the bodybuilding state, don’t worry.

Todd and Troy are all about meeting their clients where they are, and slowly increasing their fitness level. It’s a true family environment. Everyone from 12-year-old kids, pro athletes, first responders, and the average Joe are all welcome to start their journey of becoming healthier.

“Everyone there helps each other,” said Todd.

“We become friends and get to know one another, and even refer business back and forth.”

“The original purpose of Warrior Training Facility was never simply fitness. It was prevention, guidance, and empowerment,” said Troy.

“The lessons learned through demanding training environments teach young people that while life is challenging, focus, discipline, and perseverance make success achievable.”

The days grow a little longer, routines begin to shift, and there’s a quiet reminder that progress is always happening—even when we don’t immediately notice it. Spring encourages all of us to keep moving forward.

Each edition of Our Town exists for one simple reason: to keep our community connected. These publications reflect the people, families, and local businesses that make this area such a special place to live. No matter how you experience Our Town—through our publications, online editions, social media, or digital platforms—you are part of something meaningful. This has never been just about sharing information; it has always been about strengthening relationships and highlighting the people who make a difference every single day.

What inspires me most are the people behind the stories. The business owners who open early and stay late. The families shaping their futures here.

The neighbors who step up, support each other, and quietly strengthen this community. These actions may not always be seen, but they matter more than most realize. They are the foundation of what makes Our Town special.

Pet Perch: Spring Has Sprung…a Leak?

The flowers are just starting to bloom, the grass is starting to go from brown to green, and the weeds are starting to peek through the piles of leaves decaying from former seasons and colder temps. Ellie lays quietly on the bed, snoring away, enjoying the sun peeking through the window in the late afternoon. Slowly, a wet spot forms under her as she continues snoring—no sign of waking or caring about the leak she seems to have sprung.

Finding urine spots on a bed (pet or human) or on the carpet is something everyone hopes never to find! Let’s face it, though. Accidents happen. Someone forgot to let Fido out when he was standing at the door practically crossing his legs because he had been waiting so long.

Finding spots on the floor consistently, especially in similar places (the bed, the spot where the dog lays) could indicate incontinence. So, before you run out for the doggy diapers, let’s talk about it.

Older dogs, usually females, can experience incontinence due to lack of estrogen over the years. When females are spayed, we remove their ovaries and thus their main source of estrogen. This allows the sphincter (gatekeeper of the bladder) to relax more, allowing urine to flow out. When pets sleep, they are more relaxed, and the sphincter with them. The flow of urine out also means bacteria now has an entryway in. This is one of the reasons it is important to talk to your vet if you think your dog may be experiencing incontinence. Not only does it mean urine to clean up, but also the possibility

Shift…A Word for Your Day

I’ve always enjoyed driving, especially learning to drive a manual transmission.

When I learned, I had to figure out both old-school gear shifts on the steering column and the classic ones between the seats, each with its own quirks and feel.

Getting started was bumpy (literally).

Sometimes I’d stall out or switch gears at the wrong moment. But after some trial and error—and a lot of practice—I got the hang of it, and working the clutch and accelerator felt natural. The driving became a lot smoother.

In a car, staying in the wrong gear doesn’t mean you’re a bad driver; it just means the conditions have changed.

When you don’t shift, the engine strains, progress slows, and the ride gets rough. Pressing harder on the gas doesn’t fix it. A shift does.

Life works the same way. When we feel stuck, our instinct is often to push harder and apply more effort in what we are already doing. What if the problem isn’t effort? What if it’s alignment? Maybe the terrain has changed.

Maybe the pace needs adjusting. Maybe the gear that once worked smoothly no longer fits this season.

I have had many opportunities in life to practice “shift.” Life shifts can be awkward at first. But with each shift, navigating life becomes smoother.

Choosing to shift does not indicate failure. It simply acknowledges that growth requires responsiveness. Sometimes the shift is external, such as changing a schedule, trying a new approach, or delegating/outsourcing.

Other times, it’s internal such as shifting perspective, expectations, or the story we’re telling ourselves about where we “should” be by now.

Shifts happen in moments. If you are driving an automatic car, shifting happens quietly and almost without notice, i.e. moments. When driving a manual transmission car, the “moments” require intention: clutch in, ease off, move the gear, re-engage.

If you’re feeling stuck, try a different question: What shift might be needed at this moment? Up a gear for momentum. Down a gear for control.

One on One: Holden Bus Company

In 2020 Joyce Holden Kuhstoss founded in the City of Tucker, the Holden Bus Company, a local transportation service that specializes in weddings, corporate events, and small group travel.

Purchasing her own bus was always a dream of hers, so in December of 2019 Joyce purchased a bus and had to go to Minnesota to retrieve it. The bus had all the features she wanted, and it was within her budget. Just as she was about to go into business COVID hit, and as Joyce said, “Nobody wanted to go on a bus.”

Joyce had been a commissioned officer of the US Army Reserves. She commissioned in 1985 and served as a patient administration officer. Many years later she drove a shuttle bus for transportation, picking up veterans from offsite parking and taking them to their appointments at the VA. She enjoyed her job until COVID, when everything shut down.

With a Veteran’s scholarship that covered her expenses, tuition, and books, Joyce went to school for commercial driver’s license training at the Central Georgia Technical College in Warner Robbins, Georgia. She wanted to get the CDLB license to drive big buses, but there weren’t enough people registered in the class, so they put her in a class for driving manual tractor trailers. Joyce earned her Class A license and drove a tractor trailer for over two years. When the contract expired for the account that she was driving for, she started the Holden Bus Company in February 2024.

There are now two buses at the Holden Bus Company. One holds twenty-four passengers, and the other holds twenty-seven. They take groups to weddings, corporate events, casino trips, sporting events, museums, and anywhere a group would like to go.

“I’m a people person and love to facilitate experiences in a safe comfortable and cared for environment,” Joyce explained. “One of the ways the Holden Bus Company cares for their passengers is we provide extras blankets, as well as snacks, and beverages. We also play music and encourage guests to get to know each other as a connected team to make new friends.”

Alex Helton: Community Cheerleader

One Man’s Opinion: Outstanding Georgia Peach Still Finds Olympic Gold in Reach

Alexandra (Alex) Helton is the type of woman who likes a lot of connection.

Plugging in to find out about other people’s hobbies and passions is something that keeps her busy.

She has lived with her husband Blake, and eighteen-year-old son Emmett, in the Smoke Rise community in Stone Mountain for over six years and moved to Atlanta 1999. Originally from Minneapolis, Alex sees herself as a cheerleader for the Smoke Rise local neighborhood and the whole community.

Alex’s theory is that it is up to everyone to bring to their community the energy that they are looking for. One example of her cheerleading efforts was for a group she called Working Title, which was a small networking group she started for people who owned their own businesses or had a side hustle they wanted to promote. The members met monthly at the Corner Cup Coffee Shop on Main Street in Tucker. They were a diverse bunch, representing many various small businesses and entrepreneurs. The participants exchanged information and helped each other by promoting their different ventures. After about eight months Alex had to end the meetings because her life got too busy. However, she made several new friends in the process.

In addition to being an occasional volunteer contributing writer to the community newspaper, the Smoke Signal News, Alex publishes an online newsletter called The Lil Smokie, which is distributed as an insert in that paper. The content is brief information about neighborhood businesses and events, real estate tidbits, and other helpful information on both sides of one sheet of paper. The Lil Smokie is also available digitally. Alex also publishes a second newsletter called Short Takes for people outside the Smoke Rise Community. As she said she is “always looking for new ways to plug in to the community.”

Recently, Alex held Resurrected Threads: A Visible Mending Workshop at Open Door Studios. The workshop helps sewers to resurrect and rejuvenate their wardrobe with innovative ways to cover a stain, a hole, or just to create a new look for a favorite garment. Open Door Studios is an eclectic gift store filled with handcrafted items and art, housed inside the Decatur location of Souper Jenny. That opportunity came about when Alex stopped in to shop and began chatting with owner Meg Morris. Alex’s daily conversations often lead to new friendships.

The first Olympics I clearly remember was the 1972 Summer Games in Munich, Germany. The swimming medals and records of American Mark Spitz (7 Gold Medals), along with the seemingly contortionist vaults, moves, and floor exercises of Russia’s Olga Korbut, were set against the tragic kidnapping and murder of eleven Israeli athletes and coaches by a Palestinian group called Black September, nearly ending the modern Olympiad. During the 1976 games, the world was captivated by Romanian gymnast Nadia Comăneci and her series of perfect 10 scores, an Olympic first at just fourteen years old.

The 1976 Montreal Games introduced me to the sport of decathlon through the story and victory of then Gold Medal winner, U.S. athlete Bruce Jenner. Never much of an athlete myself, I found more interest in the biographies and back stories of the athletes, their perseverance, and years of pushing themselves, often from childhood, to thrive, survive, and become champions in their specific sport. In those days, through the lens of ABC’s Wide World of Sports, the biographer, narrator, and storyteller was sports journalist Jim McKay, with the backing and full support of ABC sports maestro, Roone Arledge. At least for me, these biopics and near mini-documentaries became more interesting than the Games themselves.

ABC maintained the franchise for decades, building its preeminence in sports broadcasting, still evidenced by its creation of ESPN and its offspring. In much the same way an Olympic athlete would be aware and wary of their greatest competitors, NBC Sports saw the benefit of owning global and U.S. domestic broadcast rights to this rating juggernaut. Also, by the early ‘90s, the International Olympic Committee had bifurcated the Summer and Winter games to every two years, alternating, and no host city was any longer expected to host both Olympiads. As the Olympics moved to NBC, the storytelling shifted to Bob Costas’s more humorous and introspective style of telling backstories.

Parrot Talk: To Breed or Not to Breed

Breeding any species of parrot is a significant undertaking. It demands a long-term commitment, and it is not a guaranteed source of income. Parrots require daily observation and education during the process. Breeding parrots is not for the faint of heart, and raising the chicks is an even more challenging task.

All species of parrots, from parakeets to macaws, need similar conditions when breeding. A spacious cage with access to both indoor and outdoor areas is crucial.

If kept indoors ultraviolet light on a timer is vital. The right size of the nest box, cage, and perches all influence your success. Diet must be tailored to provide necessary nutrients—such as extra calcium from almonds, broccoli, and dark greens—and textures, especially when the female is laying eggs and the male is regurgitating for her as she sits on the nest. Then come the parrots. Many parrots are monomorphic and require a DNA test to determine their sex. Just because a bird is DNA-identified as male or female doesn’t always mean it is viable or old enough to breed successfully.

After several breeding seasons have passed without fertile eggs, it would be time to take both birds to the veterinarian for a laparoscopy to check the viability of their organs. By this point, years have gone by, and the birds have not produced, costing only money for breeding setup and food. The parrots are no longer considered pets because breeding parrots tend to be unfriendly and may even attack when fed or watered. They still need clean cages. Parrots can live long lives depending on the species and may not breed until they are in their teens. If their environment changes at their breeding location, such as construction, new caretakers, or relocation, it might delay them another breeding season. Breeding birds is a long-term, selfless commitment.

Breeding does not guarantee financial rewards. Parrot prices fluctuate

annually, depending on supply and demand, elections, and new laws regarding the movement of certain species. You may have babies for sale, but you may struggle to find someone knowledgeable enough to buy them at the right time, even if the price is correct. When babies stay with their parents too long, they become wild and may bite humans. This causes them not to fetch a reasonable price. Babies should be removed from the nest when their eyes are just opening. They need to be kept at a controlled temperature, fed 3-5 times daily with formula at the proper temperature, and not overfed. Babies must not be aspirated, exposed to human viruses, or exposed to household chemicals that could cause death.

Daily inspections, fresh foods, and water are not the only essential components of successful breeding. Nest boxes must be inspected, and getting the breeders regulated to these inspections is critical. Daily maintenance of humidity near, around, and inside the nest boxes should be maintained at 50% to 75%. If humidity is low, mist the outside of the nest box with water.

Paper litter inside the nest boxes pulls moisture from the eggs, and a dehydrated egg (even if fertile) will be unable to hatch. Make sure that before the eggs are in the nest box, non-aromatic wood shavings are supplied. Even if the breeders toss them out of the cage, continue to replenish them until eggs are found. Eggs should NEVER be disturbed. If a mother leaves the nest during feeding, watering, or inspection, she must return before lights out.

Some species are stimulated to breed when given more frequent showers.

Breeding parrots is a true labor of love and not for the faint of heart. It is often years before any monetary reward is realized. Many heartbreaks are almost a requirement before the first baby appears. Some females die egg-bound. Some males are not viable. Some pairs will not produce. Some eggs end up broken or infertile. When the babies do hatch, some parents are overzealous and preen the baby’s toes off or preen until the baby has bald spots. Some parents will not feed the babies and they die. Some parents will kill the babies. When the babies survive for the first two weeks with the parents, they can be removed from the nest and hand-fed. These animals grow into adults knowing they are birds, but connected to humans. They make an incredible, astonishing, lifetime companion with the mentality of a 2-year-old human child.

Catching up with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority

On November 9, 2025, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority presented its second annual event, A Jazzy Sunday in Autumn II: Artistry Set to Jazz, Culture, and Taste, at Factory Atlanta. The theme was rooted in a vision to create an immersive experience with music at the forefront—one that curated a seamless fusion of culture, artistry, and taste—while honoring the long-standing tradition of Sundays as a time for community gathering and connection.

The goal was to cultivate an atmosphere of renaissance and refinement, with a touch of nostalgia, through music, visual art, and fine cuisine. At the same time, the event served a greater purpose: supporting local artists and entrepreneurs, along with community programs focused on education and literacy, service initiatives, civic engagement, and the provision of scholarships and educational opportunities for local youth.

One of the evening’s highlights was the opportunity for one-to-one engagement with local business owners and community organizations, including the Gwinnett County Library and several independent authors.

Attendees learned about Gwinnett County’s newest library, the Hooper Renwick Library, which also functions as a museum dedicated to Black history in the county. Guests were also able to get a head start on holiday shopping while supporting local entrepreneurs through vendor booths featured throughout the event.

Local artists were celebrated, including Najee Dorsey of Black Art America, which was named one of the top art galleries in Georgia and throughout the Southeast in a 2023 feature by Atlanta Magazine. Dorsey, who served as a special speaker at last year’s event, returned this year as a vendor and was honored with a solo exhibition.

Fundraiser Chair Ms. Moore-Johnson shared that Delta’s ongoing partnership with Najee Dorsey and Black Art in America was integral to the visual fine arts component of the event.

“We were intentional in creating opportunities to educate on investing and ownership in the visual arts space,” she explained. “Najee’s solo exhibition, along with his Zoom artist talk held a week prior to the event, strengthened the educational component, aligning with Delta’s commitment to

Up Close with the Snellville Book Festival

The second annual Book Festival was held at Grace Church in Snellville with over eighty authors proudly displaying and signing their books.

It was my first time attending a book fair as a vendor. It was fascinating to see the many genres of books, adults, young adults, children’s books, fiction, and non-fiction.

Many had a fantasy theme with plenty of dragons displayed on their tables.

The Book Festival was the brainchild of Mary Treadwell who decided to create a forum for independent authors to promote their books. Mary has been a voracious reader since she was a child and became involved with authors when her friend wrote her first book. Mary soon began assisting authors in publishing, editing, and promoting, and even assisted a friend who opened a bookstore for independent authors. Mary hosted book signings and launches and was involved in the annual writers’ conference. In the fall of 2022, Mary was asked to head up the Georgia Independent Author of the Year Awards and the Georgia Independent Author Association.

Before her involvement with authors, Mary Treadwell had two successful careers as a social worker and a 911 Communication officer.

I had the opportunity to chat with several of the authors, and it was a great learning experience for me. The authors had creative displays on their tables, and bookmarks and business cards with their information was available for people to take.

Shelby Hailstone Law writes young adult fantasy fiction. Her series, The Scaleshifter Saga, is about two young people who are forcibly turned into

dragons to be used as weapons of war. She also writes fantasy fiction without dragons. Her display was most eye catching.

Martha Ratledge Buchanan is an author, columnist, motivational speaker, storyteller, and humorist. A retired teacher, Ms. Buchanan is busy with her many interests including a humor column “Hey Y’all” published since 2015. She is a member of many literary organizations including the Southern Writers Association, which she encouraged me to join. Her books include several genres.

She has a background in clinical research, including oncology. Delatria’s seven-year-old daughter has recently published a book with her own illustrations titled Foxy’s Book of Friendship and Kindness.

One of the more unusual books was how to prepare for the aftermath of a loved one’s death, titled The Plan written by Valisha J. All these authors have been showcasing their books at book fairs and festivals. The event also featured a muscle car showcase, highlighting four classic cars that exemplified the elegant artistry of automotive design. Guests enjoyed capturing photos of these unique vehicles while dining on exquisite cuisine, all set to a backdrop of lively jazz music. Featured musical performers included Regina Troupe and Friends, a five-piece Jazz and R&B band; and Carey Durham, a violinist specializing in Jazz and R&B. Planning for A Jazzy Sunday in Autumn II began in January 2025, following a thoughtful review of what worked well in the previous year and what could be enhanced. This process included an extensive search for a venue that aligned with the desired atmosphere and program vision.

Reflecting on the planning journey, Ms. Moore-Johnson shared, “Long planning timelines in volunteer-driven, service-oriented organizations can be challenging, as we all balance family, work, and other commitments.

However, our ability to stay focused came from a shared commitment to the vision and the cause.”

She continued, “As Deltas, our sisterhood is rooted in service to our communities, expressed in many forms. At times, that work is hands-on through direct service and volunteerism; at other times, it takes shape through fundraising, allowing us to sustain and expand our impact locally. Knowing the importance of this work—and the communities we serve—kept us grounded, motivated, and focused throughout the planning process.”

The chapter also expressed gratitude for the support of community sponsors, including Primrose Schools of Lawrenceville. Ms. Tanisha Turner, owner and operator of Primrose School at Sugarloaf Parkway since 2003, was recognized as a proud Bronze sponsor. She shared that supporting the event was an opportunity to invest in a Black-owned venture.

Founded in 1913 at Howard University, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is a private, not-for-profit organization with over 350,000 initiated members and more than 1,000 chapters worldwide. The sorority is committed to sisterhood, scholarship, service, and social action. Proceeds from this event directly benefited student scholarships, educational initiatives, and public service programs.

When asked how others in the community can support this mission, Ms. Moore-Johnson explained, “Within our organization, we support many initiatives through Delta’s Five Programmatic Thrusts and its commissions, such as Arts and Letters and Social Action. We are always identifying new ways to connect and assist within the communities we serve.”

Joyce coordinated a program for years for seniors at her church, and saw how the seniors enjoyed these outings, which was her inspiration for the Holden Bus Company.

“My heart is with the seniors; they are my focus and passion,” Joyce declared.

The buses have traveled on trips to Virginia, Tennessee, and all over Georgia. The furthest round trip, over 2,000 miles, was to Omaha, Nebraska.

A group of students from Nebraska were stranded at the airport in Atlanta, and the Holden Bus Company came to their rescue.

The Holden Bus Company prides itself on being a small company with a big heart. There are three part-time drivers, and her first cousin Marsha Holden is the trip coordinator. Joyce requires her drivers to be trustworthy, safe, and calm while driving. This service offers many exciting trips featured on their website, or they can be hired for local shopping trips and weekend getaways.

Like a Bridge Over Troubled Waters

In the world most of us live in, bridge builders bring people and places together. They connect, solve problems, and find solutions. In a more literal sense, bridges cross creeks and streams and span great rivers, lakes, and even parts of oceans, helping transportation, commerce, and even to some degree, evolution. Physically and aesthetically, the world’s great bridges offer both scenic “must-see” sights and engineering marvels, as well as some of the most unique views, like from the top of the Golden Gate Bridge or the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Which brings us to Detroit, Michigan, and its sister city, Windsor, Canada, on the banks of the Detroit River, which connects Lake St. Clair to Canada and the north and Lake Erie to the south. The Ambassador Bridge, an international suspension bridge connecting Michigan to Canada, opened in 1929.

The privately-owned, toll bridge is the busiest international border crossing in North America in terms of trade volume, carrying more than 25 percent of all trade between the U.S. and Canada by value.

The Ambassador Bridge was owned by Groose Pointe, Michigan billionaire Manuel Moroun until his death in July 2020. The previous owners put the bridge on the New York Stock Exchange in 1979. Mr. Moroun bought controlling shares and eventually acquired the bridge. But this bridge, which is under constant use and has limited traffic capacity, is now also nearly a century old.

The government of Canada began construction of another bridge, the Gordie Howe International Bridge, in 2012, allowing six lanes of traffic and connecting Interstate 75 in the United States with Canadian Highway 401 in Ontario. The Ambassador Bridge currently connects to Windsor city streets on the Canadian side, despite the presence of massive trucks, which are not allowed to use the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. After attempting to buy and upgrade the Ambassador Bridge from Mr. Maroun, the Canadian government bore all the costs and built the now-complete Gordie Howe International Bridge spanning the same Detroit River, a bit downstream.

The Canadians used both U.S. and Canadian workers and steel to build the bridge. Tolls will be charged for crossing, and until the $4.7 billion in USD construction costs are recouped ($6.4 billion CAD), the Canadian government and public/private corporation created to construct and manage the bridge will receive all proceeds. Once those bonds are retired, Canada and the state of Michigan will split the toll proceeds.

Gwinnett Technical College: Names Tracey Duck 2026 Rick Perkins Instructor of the Year

Gwinnett Technical College has announced that Tracey Duck, Psychology Program Director, has been named the 2026 Rick Perkins Instructor of the Year, one of the highest honors awarded by the Technical College System of Georgia.

Duck, whose career has been shaped by a passion for teaching and the science of human behavior, views instruction as integral to her field. She noted that the American Psychological Association has a division dedicated to promoting excellence in the teaching of psychology, which reinforces that teaching is considered part of the psychology industry. She explained that by helping students strengthen their learning skills, sharpen critical thinking, understand human behavior, and recognize social influences, she applies psychological science in her teaching every day.

Duck’s instructional approach encourages students to embrace personal growth and challenge themselves. One ongoing project asks students to try a completely new experience, such as attending a cultural festival, participating in an outdoor activity, or visiting a place of faith different from their own. Her goal is for students to discover

Bridge construction project. Trump had personally overseen the renovation of the Williamsburg Bridge in New York City, connecting the Lower East Side of Manhattan with Brooklyn at an earlier point in his career.

But the Moroun family perhaps found one more court of last resort— pleading their case again to President Trump, who now opposes the opening of the Gordie Howe. Trump says that more U.S. steel should have been used during construction, and that more U.S. workers should also have been involved.

If only viewed through President Trump’s often repeated trade policy, the president has claimed that allies and trade partners have taken advantage of the U.S. for decades, not paid their fair share, and that our trade partners need to do more business and buy more American-made goods.

Additionally, he demands that trade partners shoulder a larger portion of the costs for national defense and infrastructure investments.

During my first and subsequent visits to Detroit, I often found the highlights of my stay to be across the bridge in Windsor, which had lower crime rates, casinos, and other entertainment options, along with the unique pleasure of crossing the 7,500-foot bridge span or its tunnel partner to make the trip. I don’t recommend either during the depths of winter, but in spring, summer, and early fall, the views are breathtaking.

It seems that President Trump’s judgment is clouded. Increased trade between the two countries, as well as commerce between Ontario and Michigan, benefits the entire region and the U.S. economy. It makes no sense to spend billions without opening the U.S. side of a new, improved bridge. Only the Moroun family appears to oppose the beautiful addition to the waterfront and skyline of both cities. Or maybe there’s a much more logical explanation. The Ambassador Bridge is Exit 47 off I-75, while the new Gordie Howe International Bridge is Exit 46. Oh, Canada!

“Of course, I want them to love psychology, but that is not going to happen for everyone,” Duck said. “I do hope they see the value that an understanding of human behavior brings to their training, regardless of what career field they are preparing to enter. Getting out of their comfort zone is where they learn and grow, and it is that kind of insight that I hope they take with them for years ahead.”

Duck emphasized that receiving the award reflects the excellence of the entire Gwinnett Tech faculty.

“I am honored to earn this award, but I truly do not see this as just about me,” she said. “One of the things I love about Gwinnett Tech is that we have an absolutely top-notch team of faculty, and I am privileged to represent that group in 2026.

The people I work with are extremely knowledgeable in their respective fields, hard-working and dedicated, and resilient. But most of all, our faculty truly cares about our students and helping them succeed. I have worked at other higher education institutions, and I know we have something really incredible here.”

Duck holds a Master of Science in Psychology from Florida State University and resides in Bethlehem, Georgia.

The Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction was established in 1991 and recognizes outstanding technical college instructors across Georgia. The award honors educators who make significant contributions to technical education through innovation, leadership, and commitment to student success.

The Parts of Life We Don’t Always Talk About

There’s a lot about daily life that doesn’t always get talked about—not because it isn’t important, but because it’s familiar. Routine. Expected. It’s the part of life many people quietly carry, often while making sure everyone else is okay first. These are the moments that don’t come with announcements or recognition, yet they make up many of our days.

Most days are built this way. They’re shaped around schedules that rarely align perfectly, responsibilities that don’t stop just because we’re tired, and habits formed over years—sometimes decades—of doing what needs to be done even when no one is watching. This kind of stability becomes second nature, woven so deeply into daily life that it’s easy to overlook how much it actually holds everything together.

You can see it across Gwinnett County and the surrounding areas if you slow down enough. It appears in early mornings that begin quietly, in errands that turn into conversations, and in familiar places where faces may change but the rhythm remains the same. You notice it in people who know exactly where they need to be—not because it’s exciting, but because it matters.

Much of this work goes unnoticed. The work of keeping track of things.

The work of remembering for everyone. The steady effort of showing up, even on days when energy is low. It doesn’t come with applause or recognition, and it doesn’t neatly fit on a calendar. But it holds families together, keeps communities moving, and creates a sense of continuity that’s easy to overlook until it’s gone.

There’s comfort in that steadiness. In knowing which route to take instinctively. In seeing familiar faces at regular times of day. In routines that may seem ordinary but provide grounding when everything else feels uncertain.

That kind of familiarity is powerful—especially in a world that seems to move faster every year and demands more from people all the time.

Golds. And more recently, I was inspired by the backstory of UGA Gym Dawg Simone Biles and her seemingly endless string of 11 Olympic Golds and 30 world titles. But a pattern had begun to emerge for me as well. Most of these athletes would see their careers end by 30, and the years of training and sacrifice came at a price. The luster of the medals seemed to become, at least to me, more than an occasional price too high to pay.

And now, another fellow Georgian instead reminds me that no matter the obstacle, anything is still possible. Elana Meyers Taylor, of Douglasville, Georgia—a 41-year-old mother of three children, two with special needs—is an expert in the demanding sport of mono (single) bobsledding. Her husband, Nic, is also a Men’s Olympic monobob athlete. The 2026 Winter Games in Milan was her fifth Olympiad. Meyers Taylor had won five prior medals: three silver and two bronze. With the Gold in 2026, Meyers Taylor became the oldest woman in U.S. history to score a winter Gold. Yet her teammate and close competitor, Kaillie Humphries, is only one year her junior and was also the defending Gold Medal champion from 2022. This time, Humphries would take the Bronze.

Although her teammate was also one of her closest competitors worldwide, the training biopics and their medal ceremony—where they now share 10 Olympic medals—showed that their bond and friendship are even stronger.

Well, Elana, you earned it. After emerging from the monobob and wrapping herself in a U.S. flag for warmth, she watched the clock chronicle her record time, fractions of a second better than her field of competitors. In that moment of elation, it was hard to tell which provided her more warmth: that flag or her rising spirits. I hope that iconic moment, followed by millions of moms worldwide high-fiving one another, demonstrated once again, where there is a will...there is a way.

I also hope that the endorsement deals that follow this victory and that iconic moment are as lucrative for Meyers Taylor as they were for Spitz, Jenner, Lewis, Biles, and others. Her backstory is just as inspiring, but her mid-life day-to-day obstacles to staying on top of her game are even more worthy of smiles and remembrance. Welcome home, Elana Meyers Taylor.

Over the summer Alex organized a drive to collect schoolbags and school supplies for local children in need by partnering with Omega Support Center. The Omega Support Center is a non-profit 501c3 charity located in Tucker. Omega has an ongoing mission to provide resources and education to small business owners, non-profits, and community members. Founder and Executive Director Christy Bloodwordth is someone who Alex hopes to continue to partner with, since their efforts make a big difference in people’s lives.

Alex is an active member of many organizations including the Smoke Rise Garden Club, the Tucker Business Association, and a member of the Gwinnett Tucker Toastmasters Club 833.

Part of Alex’s motivation for connection comes from a career shift she made in 2023. She left corporate America and her various roles in IT, HR, marketing, and project management to work in real estate. Despite knowing this career path would not be easy, she wanted work that emphasized connection with different groups of people. Her hope is that her enthusiasm for creating new associations throughout the community is something that people appreciate when they select a real estate agent.

Not every day is memorable, and not every week feels significant, but together, these ordinary moments build up to something meaningful.

And while they may not grab headlines, they matter deeply—to families, neighbors, and the people who quietly keep everything running.

It’s easy to focus on what’s new or what’s next. But there’s a comforting sense in what remains constant, what repeats, and what keeps working even when life feels hectic or complex. Those parts of life don’t seek attention.

They simply deserve to be acknowledged.
