here are few things we enjoy more during the holiday season than traditions; the moments passed down from generation to generation - cookie baking, our parent’s childhood ornaments, and watching “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Some families have traditions galore, while some are creating their very own in the here and now. Nothing warms a heart like watching young people invest in keeping traditions alive, and that’s exactly what Tyler and Hannah Newsome do in their day to day. Tyler and Hannah grew up together, both of them attending Abney Elementary, Moses Middle, and East Paulding High School together. They both spent most of their free time growing up at New Hope Ball Park and East Paulding High School, playing football and cheerleading. While Tyler and Hannah didn’t date in high school, they were always friends. They even had a physics class together, and they now love to joke that if it had been a chemistry class they might have fallen in love sooner! It wasn’t until after Tyler graduated and Hannah was a senior that they reconnected. They’ve been head over heels in love ever since, and just celebrated two years of marriage in November!

Accepting new patients from infants to adolescents. Dr. Lisa’s goal is to provide the highest individualized care possible. As a mother herself, and the only dentist in her practice, Dr. Lisa understands that your child’s well-being and your time is just as valuable as hers. That’s why we NEVER over book, and how we stay on schedule.

This couple has a true treasure on their hands - their Downtown Dallas home! Most homes in this area stay in the family, but theirs was hand-picked by God and given to them at the most perfect time. It is one of the oldest properties in Paulding County - built in the mid 1800’s by Civil War Veteran James P. Cooper. After a change of hands, the home was rented out for nearly 100 years, until Tyler and Hannah found it in 2016! They have slowly renovated it piece by piece, making it their own before moving in after their wedding in 2017.

Tyler and Hannah both help lead the Young Adult Ministry at West Ridge - a community for 18-30 year olds that helps create fully devoted followers of Jesus! “Many students leave the church after high school and never step foot in the doors of a church again. One of the biggest results of this is losing the connection with people your age and in the same stages of life as you. We want to make sure the Church is there to help young adults transition into college, the work place and any other season life brings.” They lead a weekly Friday night Young Adult small group, hosting around 20 young people in their home as they grow closer together while growing closer to Jesus.

Tyler attended Chattahoochee Tech here in Dallas and currently works as an assistant to one of the lead pastors at West Ridge Church. Hannah attended University of West Georgia and now teaches 3rd grade at W.C. Abney Elementary - a sweet tribute to their love story!

Tyler and Hannah have done an extraordinary job preserving the charm of their home; the original heart pine floors, shiplap, and 12 foot ceilings are just a few of their home’s notable features. Decorating a property with such a rich history has fueled their love for old furniture, antiques, and vintage decor. Cover Story Continued on Page 24

Out With the Old

By Stephanie Reck, LMSW, LBT,BCCC

efore we can move into our new season we have to let go of the old first.

in With the New

let go of worry and fear. Anything that could be hindering you from moving forward God very well may have you to remove these before preceding to what He has for you next. If you have gotten yourself into the habit of complaining, God may have you deal with this before experiencing your breakthrough or blessing that you have been waiting for.

“Old what you may be asking?” 1. Old attitudes that kept us in the “wilderness,” and moving into our “promised land.” These attitudes include: complaining, murmuring, fault-finding, covertness, thanklessness, and idolatry. 2. Old mind-sets. Allowing our minds to think whatever it wants, and not taking every thought captive into the obedience of Jesus: (2 Corinthians 10: 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.) Thinking thoughts that are negative, faithless, and hopeless. Some of us have strongholds and lies that we have believed for years and need to be torn-down by renewing our minds in the Word of God. 3. Holding onto the old things of the past. Some friendships, ministries, and possibly marriages did not succeed but when we hold onto these things and condemn ourselves repeatedly for our past mistakes we cannot move forward. Ask God to forgive you if you need to, and believe that God has forgiven you and that

He does not want you dwelling in your past any longer. (Philippians 3: 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.) Moving forward into our promised land will require “letting go” of former things. Former things that are no longer working for us, and possibly areas of sin in our lives that must be dealt with. Ask yourself what is no longer working in your life? For example you want to go forward in your life and experience all that God has for you but you are still holding onto selfishness and pride. Perhaps God is asking you to

Ask God what old things need to be discarded in your life, and what new things He is wanting to bring into your life. You may have to get rid of the old before God can make room for the new. Some things no longer work for us, and we need to have wisdom to what those things are. If you are going to purchase a new car and your old car is still in the garage, how can you make room for that new car? Some will try and fit the new car with the old car, but why would you want to hold onto your old car if it no longer is working? Some of us need to stop holding onto to the things in our past, so that God can make room for the new things He is trying to bring to pass. If what you are doing in your life is not working, it is time to make some changes. The mental health definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. Is it time for change? Contact Stephanie through www.StephanieReck.com

Invest in Your Family and Community Contributed by Roberto De Jesus of Edward Jones Investments - Dallas/Acworth

hy do you invest? For many people, here’s the answer: “I invest because I want to enjoy a comfortable retirement.” And that’s certainly a great reason, because all of us should regularly put money away for when we’re retired. But you can also benefit by investing in your family and your community. Let’s start with your family members, particularly the younger ones. How can you invest in their future? One of the best ways is to help send them to college. A college degree is still a pretty good investment: The average lifetime earnings of a college graduate are nearly $1 million higher than those of someone with a high school degree, according to a study by the U.S. Census Bureau. To help your children or grandchildren pay for any college, university, vocational school or other postsecondary education, you may want to open a 529 savings plan. With this account, withdrawals are federally tax free, as long as the money is used for qualified higher education expenses, including those from trade and vocational schools. (However, if you withdraw some of the earnings on your account, and you don’t use the money for qualified expenses, it will be taxable and can also incur a 10% federal tax penalty.) Plus, you retain control of the funds until it’s time for them to be used for school, so if your original beneficiary chooses not to pursue some type of higher education, you can name a different eligible beneficiary. Another way to invest in your family is to help your adult children avoid feeling obligated to provide financial assistance to you. For example, if you ever required some type of long-term care, such as an extended stay in a nursing home, could you afford it? The average cost for a private room in a nursing home is more than $100,000 per year, according to a study by Genworth, an insurance company. And Medicare typically pays very few of these expenses. So, to avoid burdening your adult children – while also preserving your own financial independence – you may want to consider some type of long-term care insurance. A financial advisor can help you determine what coverage may be appropriate. Moving beyond your family, you may want to invest in the social fabric of your community by contributing to local charitable, civic, educational or cultural groups. Of course, now that we’re in the holiday season, it’s the perfect time for such gifts. Furthermore, your gift will be more appreciated than in years past because one of the chief incentives for charitable giving – a tax deduction – was lost for many people due to tax law changes, which raised the standard deduction so significantly that far fewer people chose to itemize deductions. However, you might still be able to gain some tax benefits from your charitable gifts. To name one possibility, you could donate financial assets, such as stocks that have risen in value, freeing you of potential capital gains taxes. In any case, contact your tax advisor if you’re considering sizable charitable gifts.  Saving for your retirement will always be important. But don’t forget about investing in your family and your community – because these investments can provide satisfying returns.   This article was written by Edward Jones for use by Roberto De Jesus, your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. 678-574-5166

Guess Who’s Coming Down Our Chimney!

Traditional vs. Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery By Anuj Patel, MD, OrthoAtlanta

eck and back issues are leading reasons why patients seek treatment from orthopedic and neurologic specialists. Issues stemming from the spine are both common and painful. Spinal conditions such as spinal stenosis, radiculopathy or herniated discs can impact almost every aspect of a patient’s life. The inherent pain of a debilitating back condition can cause sufferers to abandon their hobbies and once-pleasurable physical activities for fear of worsening spine issues. If you suffer from nerve pain, there are a range of treatments that may improve your condition. Most people opt for non-surgical alternatives first, such as medications and physical therapy, but when conservative treatments have been exhausted, there are a variety of approaches for spinal surgery including the traditional open approach and newer minimally invasive approaches. Traditional Open Surgery Traditional open surgery, as the name implies, is the standard of care to treat most neck and back spinal issues. It consists of exposing the spine through a midline approach for the surgeon to visualize all aspects of the spine. Because of the larger exposure needed, there is more disruption of the surrounding muscle soft tissue. A larger skin incision is needed for the surgeon to see all he or she needs to see. Traditional open surgery also has increased inherent risks of infection, bleeding, and pain due to the larger surgery needed. Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery As the name suggests, minimally invasive spine surgeries (MIS) seek to address conditions affecting the spine in a focused manner without the need for larger dissections involved with open procedures. Innovations in diagnostic imaging and surgical techniques have allowed minimally invasive back surgery to now treat certain spinal conditions that were otherwise only treated with open procedures. This allows surgeons to make smaller cuts and disrupt less tissue while correcting the problem. There are many benefits to using the minimally invasive approach, including less post-operative pain, decreased soft tissue injury, and less bleeding, that can lead to faster recovery time, reduced risk of infection, and better outcomes for patients. Minimally invasive back surgeries can also be less costly since the time to conduct the surgery and the recovery time afterward is significantly shorter in duration.

Minimally-invasive surgical procedures that are becoming more common include MIS lumbar microdiscectomy for removal of a herniated disc that pinches a nerve causing severe leg pain, numbness or weakness, MIS lumbar microdecompressions for treatment of spinal stenosis, MIS TLIFs for treatment of spinal instability, and MIS cervical laminoforaminotomy for treatment of cervical radiculopathy.

To learn more about traditional vs. minimally invasive spine surgery, and what may be right for you, contact the orthopedic specialists at OrthoAtlanta. Anuj Patel, M.D., is an orthopedic surgeon at OrthoAtlanta specializing in minimally invasive spinal procedures including adult degenerative spinal surgery of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, adult spinal deformity including scoliosis, traumatic spinal injuries, total disc arthroplasty, spinal tumors, and pediatric orthopedic spine surgery, including scoliosis.

Going Green

By Pamela Turner and Mary Carol Sheffield

ith the New Year, many Georgians may be resolving to live greener in 2020. The best way to start is by making a few small changes at a time. Here are a few ways Paulding County residents can start saving money, conserving natural resources and reducing waste without sending their families into green culture shock. Plan to bring your Christmas tree to Keep Paulding Beautiful’s, annual “Bring one for the Chipper” Event on January 4, 2020 or drop your tree off at Home Depot in Hiram a few days before the event. Trees are chipped for mulch, used by pond managers to create fish habitat and you can feel good that your Christmas tree does not go in the landfill, but is used as a valuable resource beyond the holiday season. Take a reusable bag to the store when you grocery shop. Plastics (including plastic bags) make up 8% or 14.4 million tons of trash each year.

Downsize by donating. If you want to give away things you no longer need, donate to a local non-profit or check out a local, web-based Freecycle Network. This is a grassroots, nonprofit movement of people who are donating things they no longer need or want, and getting new stuff for free from other people in their community. Local groups are moderated by a volunteer and membership is free.

Replace incandescent light bulbs with Energy Star qualified compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL). According to the EPA, if every home in the U.S. replaced one light bulb with a CFL, enough energy would be saved to light more than 3 million homes for a year.

Select the appropriate load size on the washing machine and follow the detergent’s manufacturer instructions on using the right amount. Save water in the kitchen. Instead of washing one dish at a time under running water, fill up the sink or a dishpan with soap and water and wash several dishes at once. You could save 5 gallons a day of water.

More About the Cover

Feature Photographer

However, their love for antiques goes far beyond finding beautiful pieces for their home! Tyler and Hannah have traveled all across the southeast in search of unique antiques. Tyler ended up building a shed behind their house that has transformed into a charming little country store. It has become a home to all of the unique pieces they’ve found over the years.

Channing Jackson

hanning Jackson is local natural light photographer, who has enjoyed capturing life through a lens for as long as she can remember. It began the first time she used her Dad’s film camera; photographing the beauty she found in the everyday life around her. What was once just a childhood hobby has flourished into a profession that has given her the fulfilling privilege to capture the warmth of the human spirit in the portraits she takes today. Her impeccable taste and keen eye are the instinctive tools she uses to cultivate her craft.

They sell quite a few of their finds at Woodstock Antiques, and have dedicated an Instagram page to their journey - @georgia motoroil. Their favorite find to date is an original sign from Moss Chevrolet Dealership which was once located in Downtown Dallas - now Wender & Roberts Pharmacy. The 4x8 foot hand-painted sign dates back to the 1940s and can now be found in the Newsome’s dining room, hanging above the fireplace.

When Channing is not behind her camera, she is spending quality time with her husband of 12 years and their two wonderful children. Traveling and exploring with family is something she enjoys deeply because of the opportunity to document those special memories through her lens.

As for their own Christmas traditions, Tyler and Hannah’s favorite thing is to decorate their tree together while listening to Christmas music! They always try to pick out a new ornament whenever they go somewhere new. They look forward to spending time with family and their sweet pup, Georgie, this holiday season!

As a natural light photographer, Channing can capture just about anything your heart desires. She specializes in weddings, couples, family and portraits.

Bringing new life into old roots has been such a testament to God’s faithfulness in their lives, and they hope to pour that same knowledge into the generations to come. It has been so special getting to know people who love Dallas and are committed to keeping traditions and history alive! Read more about the Newsome’s in our extended article and see more beautiful photos from our cover shoot on our website, www.ourtownfamily.com
