Betsey Joyner - “Living Proof”

Limited Time Offer

etsey Joyner was born in Kansas City, Missouri. At the age of four, she and her sister (age 2) were adopted. Her father worked for AT&T and her mother, a native Atlantan, was a professional artist. Her family moved around quite a bit during her young life. After living in Massachusetts, Betsey attended high school in New Jersey, and later graduated from Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee. She has a degree in Education with an emphasis in Special Education.

Betsey always knew God created her to work with children and teenagers. She spent 30 years working in Special Education and Children and Adolescent Psychology with in-patient and in-community, drop out and delinquents. She lived at a wilderness treatment center for adolescents for five years, and served as a Community Mental Health Case Manager for 10 years in Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia, including Paulding County.

In 2000, she moved back to Paulding where she continued her work. Then in 2004, Betsey received a diagnosis of breast cancer. Through prayer and laughter she persevered through the diagnosis, the surgery, the chemotherapy and the recovery. She wrote about her experience in a story she called “Laughing through the Tears.” In it she writes of Chemotherapy - “Yea, though I walk through the valley of LIFE,” my chant as I entered my first treatment. I refused the sedative the doctor had ordered as I wanted to be lucid for the procedure. What an awful ,wonderful place!  Yucky smell, bad food, wonderful staff. Shots in my stomach. Each treatment my friends sent me with a bag of toys which I shared…Two weeks later, I remember standing outside on a breezy autumn day pulling my hair out by handfuls and watching it drift away. It hurt! Maybe a bird would find it in the spring and use it in a nest. Ashes to ashes.” The joy of her friends got her through the diagnosis and treatment, and she learned to adapt. Betsey writes, “Tamoxifen, hot flashes, new, very curly hair. I suppressed the thought of metastasis, took afternoon naps when I ran out of gas, more and more blood work. I flew to Florida for my first get away in four years to be with a dear friend with stage 3 lung cancer. She said, “I probably won’t feel much like a hostess,” and I said, “That’s OK, I’ll just lie on the bed with you and make you laugh,” and I did.”  Then in 2009, on the fifth anniversary of the first diagnosis, they diagnosed her with stage 4 breast cancer with metastases in the bone and liver. With the additional rounds of chemo, shots, pills and radiation she had to retire from work. She misses the children and their families very much, but she has kept quite busy. Philadelphia – Fun with a Past!

By Pam Walker

ittle did I know when I attended a meeting in the Northeast that I would be visiting Philadelphia? I had been born there too many years back to mention, and had not been back since.

What a surprise! Hosted by the Ritz Carlton Philadelphia, I was in the center of everything. From the window of my room I could see all of the sights of the city and most were within walking distance. The Ritz is housed in what was one the Girard Trust Company. Built in 1904 it was one of “Philly’s” most prominent banks and is now an architectural masterpiece of turn of the century design.

museum dedicated to Benjamin Franklin, and The Betsy Ross House is where the famous flag maker constructed the first flag of the United States of America. You can visit the Liberty Bell Center and view the 2800-pound bell with its famous crack that rang on July 8, 1776, to announce the first reading of our Declaration of Independence. Not to be missed is Independence Hall where our Declaration of Independence was adopted and the US Constitution drafted.

There are many such buildings in Philadelphia. The forefathers wrote our constitution here and the newer generations were not about to destroy the history found here. I had no idea that the Philadelphia depicted in the old “Rocky” movie was more than an art museum alongside a river and some run down areas as seen in the film.

There are many other things to do and see in Philadelphia. The famed Reading Terminal Market is a must see. Wonderful hot apple dumplings and other great Amish treats, as well as, Philly Steak and Cheese steak sandwiches, and fresh grown fruits and vegetables can be purchased at the myriad of booths located there. Chinatown is not far and almost as good as those in San Francisco and New York.

Philadelphia is a beautiful city with numerous Colonial sites that ring with the history of our country. There is a

There are other areas to visit as well. Try Penn’s Landing

along the Delaware River for some great seafood...or visit Rittenhouse Square to shop your heart out at designer and boutique shops. Or enjoy Chestnut Hill with its historic cobblestone streets and homes from the early part of the 18th century. Philly is also a city for the arts. Everywhere you go you will see murals painted on walls of city buildings. There are over 3,500 of them throughout the city. The Ritz Carlton also sits in the center of the city’s cultural arts community and is located on the Avenue of the Arts. There are theatres, museums and beautiful examples of turn of the century architecture all around. There are art tours, sculling tours (rowing boats), bike tours, trolley tours, mural arts tours, food tours and even Segway tours if you are so inclined. Restaurants run the gamut from American to over the top eclectic and cuisines from around the world. Philadelphia is known as the “Birthplace of the United States.” but has definitely become a World City. It is a great, fun city to explore. ……and learn at the same time!

Winter Blues (Seasonal Affective Disorder) By Mobolaji Oyebanjo,MD - Board Certified Psychiatrist and Addictionologist

he arrival of a new year is usually a time of joy for most people, but unfortunately this is not the case for everyone. Many people struggle with depression for various reasons; some because of departed loved ones, some because of the pressure of keeping up with New Year resolutions, some because of lack, some because of lack of sunlight (seasonal affective disorder), and there are a host of potential other reasons.

Call today for Next Day Appointment

Whatever the reason for your blues, need not be so. You are the expert on yourself. If you are aware that you usually struggle during this time of the year, there are certain things you can do to reduce your stress level and improve your mood. If you are currently receiving treatment, be sure to remain compliant with your current treatment regimen. If spending time away from home, make sure you have enough medication to cover your trip. It is unwise to skip treatment for any reason!

Most Insurance Plans Accepted Treating Children and Adults

Here are some tips: Be careful as you make New Year’s resolutions by setting realistic goals. You already have the ultimate gift of life, so count your blessings. Make up your mind to be at peace with troublesome family members especially if avoiding them is not an option. Make plans to spend time with the people you love. Take advantage of the sun when it shows up. Develop a plan to pay off any debt you incurred over the Christmas holiday. Remember your departed loved ones in a special way by engaging in a positive activity in their memory for the New Year. Replace an unhealthy lifestyle with a healthy activity (i.e. cut back on smoking, exercise more, etc.).

If you are sad, empty, hopeless, depressed, heavy, experiencing loss of interest or pleasure, or no longer feel like living, you probably need to see a mental health professional. Depending on the severity of your symptoms (i.e. experiencing suicidal thoughts) you may need to go to the emergency room.

There are different causes of depression; abnormal neurotransmitters, stress, poor diet, financial or relationship problems, loss, lack, poor sleep, medication side effects, alcoholism, prescription pills addiction, hypothyroidism, low testosterone, and lack of Vitamin D – just to name a few. A thorough medical work up might be warranted in some people to determine the origin of the depression.

There are various types of mental health professionals; licensed therapists (LPC’s), licensed social workers (LCSW’s) or psychologists, to name a few. Any of these professionals can help you with talk therapy or counseling. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who, in addition to counseling, can prescribe necessary medication and provide medication management as well.

The good news is you no longer need to struggle with the blues at any time of the year. A simple call to your insurance agency today will help you identify mental health providers in your area. The Yellow Book is also another helpful resource for finding mental health professionals. After all, you deserve a Happy New Year!

“Attention Sciatica And Low Back Pain Sufferers…”

Could One Hour With Our Doctors Give You The Answer To Your Disc Pain?

Now, in Acworth, GA, Dr. Erin Arnold, D.C. & Dr. Amy Valente, D.C. have what may be the most important breakthrough in non-surgical back pain treatment. Before and after MRI studies have shown disc bulges shrink in size – even with the most painful cases of L4-L5 & L5-S1 herniations. If you’ve had disc problems for years, recently injured your back, or you’re suffering with sciatica, you must hear about these new studies. Scientific studies tell us that spinal discs are responsible for most of the aches and pains people suffer from. Discs act like a cushion between our backbones and allow for a space at each level so the nerves can exit the spinal column. When these discs get injured or wear out from bad posture, they begin to degenerate and cause pain. Bulging and herniations begin to form, pressing on the nerve roots. If the herniations occur at L4-L5, they can severely compromise the large sciatic nerve, causing muscle weakness, tingling, and severe pain. The most common invasive treatment for disc herniations is surgery. This costs quite a bit of money. Even with health insurance the patient is left with their own portion of the bill, in excess of $10,000-$15,000, and sometimes more. The recovery time and missed work can be anywhere from 3 to 6 months, not to mention the obvious severe risks associated with all surgery.

p Try dangerous back surgery p Just live with it If you’re like most, none of these have worked for you or you are afraid of what could happen if you do try some of these. Exercising makes you hurt more, pain medications and muscle relaxers cover up the problem and give you side effects. Pain shots can cause more pain, don’t work or don’t last very long or FIX the problem, back surgery didn’t work, or made you worse. Or maybe you were one of the lucky ones that back surgery actually helped, but now the problem is back with a vengeance. Whatever your situation, you owe it to yourself to check into a Breakthrough Computerized Non-Surgical Treatment for back pain and sciatic or leg pain caused by a bulging, herniated or squashed disc or discs. It has helped hundreds of people who were suffering just like you. This new treatment machine we are calling “the squashed disc machine.”

But here’s the biggest problem… there is a high failure rate of back surgery. One medical study found that on average, 53% of L5-S1 back surgeries fail to produce relief of symptoms (International Orthop 1987.)

How “Good” Discs become “Bad” Discs Over time the discs in your back tend to get squashed or compressed, especially if you’ve played certain sports when younger or have a job that requires lots of sitting or standing in one place for long periods of time. Car accidents, lifting things, very physical jobs just to name a few.

Before You Go Under The Knife And Opt For Spinal Surgery… You should seriously consider a less invasive approach called spinal decompression.

It’s kind of like a cookie with cream filling, and the cream filling will start to ooze out from between the sides of the cookie if pressure is applied on top of the cookie (like gravity on our spines).

Non-surgical spinal decompression is a new technology that has been proven to reverse disc herniations. It creates a vacuum effect on the disc, which pulls the disc back into its normal position and brings in a fresh blood supply to promote healing.

Eventually this happens to a lot of us. Statistics show over 80% of Americans will suffer with back pain some time in their life.

Do You Have A Disc Problem? If you experience any of the following in your back or neck, chances are your pain is due to a disc bulge, herniation or degeneration: u A vice-like squeezing feeling in your back u Sitting causes back or leg pain u Stabbing pain at the belt line or in your neck u Can’t turn over in bed without hurting u Numbness in your toes or fingers u Fire down your legs u Searing pain radiates into your arm u Prickling in your leg or toes Finally, Some Good News…… If you’ve been suffering with back pain or arm/leg pain caused by a disc bulge, disc herniation or squashed or compressed discs. Until recently, the only advice for many of you suffering in pain was to try what you’ve been told: p Try exercising p Try physical therapy p Try pain medications p Try muscle relaxers p Try pain shots

Spinal decompression treatments are very gentle. In fact, every once in a while I even catch a patient sleeping during treatment! How Does This Machine Work? Haven’t you ever had the thought…”Gosh, if somebody could just pull me apart…I would feel a whole lot better.” Yeah, we know you have. And it kind of makes a bit of sense. Well someone else, actually a medical manufacturer, back pain specialists, neurosurgeons and engineers have come up with just that. A machine that gently pulls your apart, stretches the disc to a certain point that causes a drop in pressure inside the disc (like a little vacuum in the middle of the cream filling) causing the cream filling to suck back in! You’ll simply lie on your stomach or back, whichever is comfortable, and then a specialized belt is gently put around your waist. We’ll set the machine to focus on your problem area – then the advanced decompression computer system will do the rest. Most patients feel better with just a few treatments, and best of all there will be no dangerous drugs, no invasive procedures, and no painful exercises. Does Decompression really work? Absolutely! When you come in we will provide you

with studies that show why decompression is a preferred method of treatment. But what provides the best “proof” on how well decompression works is what patients say about it. Just Listen to What Our Patients Had to Say: I started at North Cobb Spine & Nerve Institute for pain in my low back that traveled down my right leg. The pain felt like a burning sensation down my leg and numbness into my toes. I was unable to walk my normal 5 miles. Since starting the spinal decompression therapy I am now able to walk again without any pain. The pain and numbness down my right leg is completely alleviated. I was surprised to find that I am even sleeping better at night and that the tension in my upper back has also been relieved. The staff here has treated my great and is very caring! Thanks Bill Norman My initial reason for coming to North Cobb Spine & Nerve was for the need to get rid of the pain, numbness and tingling sensation in my left hip and leg. The spinal decompression treatment has greatly helped relieve that pain and numbness. I am now able to walk straight again, without pain and my posture has also improved. My family has noticed also that I am feeling better. I am now able to do things with them without dragging behind. The atmosphere and care here at North Cobb Spine & Nerve is very caring, nice and helpful. The most amazing thing about the care is how soon I noticed the difference in myself! Thank you, Deborah McGrew Before I started getting spinal decompression therapy I was having severe pain in my low back and numbness down my leg constantly. I had been suffering with this for 3 years. I had two nerve abrasions, multiple steroid shots in my back, pain killers, PT and water therapy and nothing worked. After the first spinal decompression treatment I could stand up straight with very little pain. I can now sleep through the night and exercise again. I am 90-100% better and I am so thankful I found this office. Thanks, John Ratledge

As you can see, spinal decompression has a high success rate with helping disc herniations, sciatica, and back pain. In just a matter of weeks you could be back on the golf course, enjoying your love life, or traveling again. Feel the Improvement – and Say “Yes” to Life Again With my “Decompression Evaluation” we’ll be able to find the problem and then get to work on it. Think of how you’ll feel in just a few short weeks. See and feel your life change for the better. Start your body on the way to pain-free, normal living, feel tight joints rest, relax, free up, muscles tied in knots will become more supple and strength in your muscles may increase. You’re able to live life like a normal person again, without back pain – able to play with your kids, enjoy time with friends, and finally get a good night’s rest.

Who Will I Be Today?

By Linda Weaver

happening in their lives. They need someone who has received God’s grace and mercy to show them that same grace and mercy.

cripture tells us that God’s ways are higher than ours. Our imagination doesn’t do justice when it comes to working out the details of our lives and the purposes God has for us. We can’t know just how effective we can be in His hands until we follow His guidance and step out in His courage as He directs us.

No experience is wasted. We need one another. We should sometimes forget the awkwardness we are subject to or the inconvenience of the disruption in our lives - if God has a task for us that is not exactly what we had made room for in our goal setting.

Our first concern is usually ourselves. We consider all the ways that our lives will be affected and how we are going to be inconvenienced. We reason and plot, plan and scheme. We don’t mean to be crafty. But we can be. Robert Burns was a poet from Scotland. In his Scottish dialect he said, “O wad some Power the giftie gie us to see oursels as ithers see us!” Or simply, “I wish for a power to give us this gift: Being able to see ourselves the way other people see us.” (Wikiquote)

We should always be available to God if we truly want Him to use us as His disciples. We must look beyond our own comfortable surroundings and yield to His call - whatever it might be. Linda Weaver is a Christian author, speaker, and teacher. Her passion is that God’s Word become such a major part of each believer’s life that it becomes the standard for their daily living.

Each of us sees ourselves differently than others do. We wear many masks. We want others to like us and to accept us, so we have become adept at changing those masks as needed. We work so hard at being what others want us to be that we do not become all that God intended. We rest secure in our own decisions instead of yielding to His direction for our lives. I don’t know about you, but I have an idea of how I want my life to be. I set my goals and work hard at achieving them. If something comes up to interfere with my preconceived ideas, it upsets me - or, it used to. I have discovered that God’s ways are always so superior to mine. I have to bury my flesh, my emotions, my “rights”, and my will. It’s called FAITH. God sees potential in all of us. He knows our limits. He uses all the pain and failures in our lives to train us. We don’t pass through our trials and tribulations for no reason. Even if we have brought them upon ourselves! God can use everything that is meant for our destruction as a gift to someone who needs us to understand what is

Looking forward to a great 2014!

A Gardeners’ New Year’s Resolutions

225 Legion Road Dallas GA 30132

By Mary Carol Sheffield, Paulding County Extension Coordinator

Tue - Fri 8am-6pm Sat 8am-1pm

very year I make a short list of resolutions for the New Year. I’m sure many of you do, as well. Usually, mine revolves around longer, more frequent workouts and fewer tempting desserts, but this year, I thought maybe I would think about my resolutions in terms of my yard and garden. So here goes.

$5 OFF

I resolve: 1. To keep a garden notebook. I’m not good at journaling, but if I think of it as data collection that makes it a little easier for me. I will record weather data; including the date of the last frost, amount of rain that collects in my rain gauge after that afternoon shower, and daily temperatures. I will also include my planting dates for when I start seeds and a map of my vegetable garden plot. 2. To sketch out my landscape and all the plants currently in place. I’m also not an artist, but a large piece of graph paper, a tape measure and a measuring wheel would go a long way towards preventing me from digging up dormant plants. It will also help me to plan for future bed installations and plantings. Before I do this, I will call the “Call before you dig number” (811) so that I can add the underground utility lines to my map. 3. To spend at least 10 minutes each day, scouting my beds for insects, diseases and weeds and to take preventative measures to help reduce problems with these pesky garden visitors. 4. To use my UGA Extension soil test recommendations to help cultivate a healthy lawn and garden. Not only will following these recommendations help my plants look better, but they will help me prevent excessive nutrients from entering ground water and streams in my area. 5. To keep a list of plants and their sources that I buy for my garden and record the date I purchased them as well as the date at which they get planted. 6. To look for ways to reduce water consumption around my landscape, including planting drought resistant plants and watering on a consistent schedule. (Water between 10 pm and 9 am in order to use water efficiently.) I will also consider adding a rain barrel to my landscape this year to capture rain water from my gutter system, for use in my landscape. 7. To visit botanical gardens in my area and in my travels. What better way to be inspired to plant and create new areas in our own landscapes. 8. To plant a few new varieties in my vegetable garden, along with the tried and true varieties that always produce well in our area. 9. To reduce the area of my lawn to just the amount that is manageable and useful for my landscape needs. 10. To lose ten pounds while putting all of these resolutions into action.

Benefits of Using a Slow Cooker By Judy Hayes

peratures and contained heat, so there’s less energy output needed to keep it hot. Also, if you’re cooking during the warmer months of spring and summer, you don’t heat up you whole house, like a conventional oven.

lthough you can use your slow cooker any time of year, many people associate them with the warm, rich foods of autumn and winter. Regardless of what style or size of slow cooker you have, there are other benefits to using a slow cooker as well.

4. Versatility - You would be amazed at what you can make with your slow cooker. Most people associate them with roasts and stews, and slow cookers are great for that. However, you can also make jams, cobblers, sauces, desserts, pasta, and even bread in your slow cooker. You can even make yogurt with the right recipe.

1. Busy Cook’s Friend - The slow cooker can be a busy cook’s best friend, especially if you are going to be gone all day. While quick-cooking foods can be convenient too, a slow cooker allows you to do something else all day while dinner cooks. There are some breakfast foods you can allow to cook all night, too, so that you can awake to a hot breakfast or have a meal ready to take to a morning or afternoon potluck.

5. Easy Clean-Up - While you can’t submerge the heating unit that surrounds the crock in the middle, you can submerge the crock. It’s usually very easy to clean, as most crocks are glazed ceramic. You have a complete meal in one pot, so you don’t have a lot to wash.

2. Extra for the Freezer - One of the great advantages of the slow cooker is that you can cook extra food for the freezer. You can have a slow cooker going any day of the week, including days where you are cooking regular meals, and simply freeze the meal when it’s done.

6. Low Temperatures - Have you ever been frustrated by burned, scorched, or stuck-to-the-bottom-of-the-pan foods? One of the things that a slow cooker can help avoid is burned food. The low temperatures mean you won’t have to deal with those high-heat problems.

3. Low Energy Use - A slow cooker on your counter uses a lot less energy than a conventional oven. Even though it’s on for hours, the slow cooker uses low tem-

Most of the time, anything you can cook in an over, you can make in a slow cooker. However, before you just throw everything into the slow cooker and hope for

the best, there are some general principles you should consider. 1. Temperature - In most slow cookers, “Low” is around 200 degrees F, and “High” is about 300. Cooking takes about twice as long on Low as it does on High. If your recipe calls for long oven baking or stovetop simmering, then you can probably get away with 8-10 hours on Low (a standard cook temperature and time for roasts and red meats). 2. Liquid - Slow cookers produce very moist heat. This means your recipe will retain more moisture than it would if it were baked in the oven. So a good rule of thumb is to reduce the amount of liquid in your recipe by about half. However, if you’re cooking rice or some other grain, then you should use an amount of liquid that is just shy of the standard amount. 3. Oven versus Slow Cooker - Here is a handy guide for oven times converted to slow cooker times: Oven: 20-30 minutes Slow cooker: 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours on High; 4 to 6 hours on Low Oven: 35-45 minutes Slow cooker: 2 to 3 hours on High; 6 to 8 hours on Low Oven: 50 minutes to 3 hours Slow cooker: 4 to 5 hours on High; 8 to 18 hours on Low **Editor’s Note: See page 38 for some delicious, slowcooker recipes for the month of January.

fitness Do Not Even Think of Getting Fit this New Year… Unless…

By Jason Goggans

ell, it’s that time of year again. The holidays are over, the New Year is here, resolutions have been made, and the gym parking lots look like Atlanta rush hour at 5pm on a rainy day. Of course, the number one resolution this year will once again be to lose weight and get healthy…and once again over 95% of people will fail and fall off the wagon before January even ends.

I am all for resolving to get fit and healthy. I think there is no more important pursuit in life than health; without it we have nothing. The issue I have with New Year’s resolutions is that people are resolving to get fit, lose weight, and get healthy for all the WRONG reasons. They do it because, well, that’s what you’re supposed to do in the New Year, right? They are approaching it with the absolute wrong mindset. Getting fit and healthy should be much higher on the priority list than something you decide to do every January. Getting healthy and fit is something you do because you want to feel good, look good, live a long time, set a good example for your family, avoid the doctor as much as possible, have energy, etc. These things aren’t only important in January. They’re important all the time! Exercising, eating right, getting enough sleep, and limiting stress are not easy things do. Therefore when you do them for the wrong reason you almost zero chance for success. There’s just not enough internal motivation there to push through when times get tough…and they will get tough. That is the inherent reason that New Year’s resolutions almost always fail.

Acworth Pulmonary & Sleep Acworth Pulmonary and Sleep, LLC provides superior evaluative services and treatment of pulmonary diseases and sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, asthma, and COPD

If you are serious about getting healthy once and for all don’t start by making a New Year’s resolution. Start by changing your mindset and figure what is your true motivation. Once that’s determined, then go ahead and make the resolution. Just don’t let the resolution BE your motivation. As the saying goes “To change your life you have to change yourself. To change yourself you have to change your mindset.” One last piece of advice I will give you to help your chances of success in the New Year is do not make weight loss your primary goal. Even when you are doing things right weight loss can be a weird and funny thing. Weight loss is rarely linear. There are peaks, valleys, and plateaus. You can lose 5 pounds one week, two pounds the next week, and no pounds the week after that. While that is very normal, it can lead to frustration and a belief that all this hard work is not worth only losing two pounds in two weeks. Instead, how about exercising and eating right to be healthy, to feel good, to live a longer life, and a happier life. When you exercise and eat right these things will happen and frustration will often be avoided. Fixate on the number on the scale and you will often be let down, frustrated, and confused. The best part is if you concentrate on these other goals the weight loss will happen as well! So this New Year do not even think about getting fit and healthy unless you focus on the right goals, change your mindset, and do it for the right reasons and utilize the right motivations. Happy New Year and make it a great 2014! PAGE 22 PAGE 22

The Top Home Decorating Trend: Infusing Natural Elements into the Decor

ature is bringing a breath of freshness into home decorating, but it’s more than just incorporating flowering pots or opening windows. The latest home decorating trend features natural elements in the textures and finishes of furniture and accessories, giving homeowners an elegant - and often calming-- result of blending nature and home living into a beautiful space.

Rugs Golden

“We really want to see the handprint of nature in our homes now,” says Elaine Griffin, New York interior designer and author of Design Rules. “Organic in the home is huge. It’s one of the biggest trends for the year, and it’s going to stay with us for a while.” Bring this elegance into your own home with the following decorating suggestions from Griffin: * Bring exotic looks into your kitchen with new cabinets that go beyond the basic oak or cherry woods. Griffin suggests using rosewood or zebra wood - woods formerly reserved for custom furniture. And as both new construction and remodeling projects embrace the open floor plan concept, cabinets are visible from several rooms, which makes it a style upgrade not only for the kitchen, but for adjacent spaces, as well. * The latest furniture design trends also reflect the growing popularity of organic materials and textures, Griffin says, whether it’s a table tops left in the natural oak wood finish, or driftwood incorporated into furniture or accessories. The pale gray coloring of driftwood, combined with honey or pale colors used on other furniture or the walls is opening up spaces - moving away from the darker colors. * The natural look isn’t just for the kitchen and living areas; it’s also perfect for the bathroom. Robern vanities and mirrors featuring Digital Wood harness the warmth of six different wood species using high-definition scans that are printed on the backside of the glass surface. The result: an easy-to-maintain material that won’t be affected by the humidity or heat commonly found in bathrooms. * The era of matching all fabrics, styles and materials in a room has shifted into combining elements of all into a beautiful room setting, Griffin says. “All great rooms need a mixture of finishes for furniture, with something that’s painted, something that’s wood, something that’s a metallic gold leaf, something that’s ceramic,” she says. “That’s the secret to professionally styled rooms.”

How to Modify Your Home to Accommodate Sudden Limited Mobility

ost people plan for a long time when they decide to remodel or renovate their home, but if you or a loved one suddenly becomes disabled or mobility impaired, you may be caught off guard. The home that you love and want to continue living in may suddenly pose great Photo courtesy challenges to you, and you might not know where to start. Fortunately, there are numerous home modifications and home renovations you can do to make your home more accessible.

When remodeling now, it is important to think about what the future may hold, and incorporate many of these home improvement modifications. Make sure the custom kitchen, bathroom or home remodeler you choose is also a certified aging in place specialist and experienced in the principals of Universal Design. Kitchen modifications are a great place to start for

your independent living solutions. The kitchen is often a focal point in a home, where friends and family gather to eat and talk. Some kitchen renovations can include lowering some countertops, increasing floor space, adjusting the height of your appliances, enhancing the lighting and designing rollout and sliding shelves. Kitchen remodeling is a great way to add ease to your everyday living now, and in the future.

The location of your master bedroom is another concern if you suddenly become disabled. Having a master bedroom addition on the first floor would be the ultimate option for your accessible home improvement renovations. If there is no space to add in a master bedroom on the first floor, there are other options. You can install a private home elevator or a stair lift into your home, which will accommodate you getting up and down in your home more easily. Enhanced lighting is another element that is crucial to your accessible home remodeling needs. Having automatic lights outside ensures that you have appropriate lighting at night. You can also enhance the lighting in each room of your home. Adding in more lighting in your kitchen over the areas in which you work can make sure that you are safe while cooking, and adding in lighting to the bathroom can eliminate safety hazards. In addition to the interior disabled home modifications you may choose to utilize, there are also exterior home renovations that can help you. The location of your garage will become increasingly important, so you can get in and out of your home more safely.  If you do not have a garage, you should try to move a parking area as close to the front of your house as possible.  You may need to have a ramp added to the front of your home, in case you need to have wheelchair accessibility.  Done correctly, a ramp can be architecturally pleasing, and look like it was part of the original home design.

Bathroom remodeling is another important element in your accessible home renovations. Some possible accessible bathroom ideas include installing a walk-in-shower or no threshold shower, adding slip-resistant flooring or a walk-in-tub. You can also have the height of your toilet adjusted and have grab bars added to increase safety. It is also very important to make sure you have a bathroom on the first floor of your home so you do not need to go upstairs to use the facilities.

How Using Outdated Technology Can Impact the Reputation of a Small Business

mart business owners know how important it is to preserve their company’s reputation, but many may not realize the extent to which their current and potential customers care about the technology they use.

According to a recent survey, more than 90 percent of consumers said they would - or would consider - taking their business elsewhere if a company uses outdated technology. Respondents cited convenience and better customer service among reasons modern technology matters to them when it comes to working with small businesses. In fact, 68 percent of consumers think the use of modern technology is critical to the success of a business, and more than 60 percent said they are likely to become a repeat customer of a business using modern technology. What qualifies as “outdated?” About 60 percent of consumers consider operating systems and desktop computers that are 5 to 10 years old to be outdated. That means that the estimated 30 percent of small businesses that are still running the 12-year-old Windows XP operating system fall into the category of “outdated” in consumers’ minds. But there are more than just reputational considerations for businesses still using an outdated operating system. After April 8, 2014, businesses running Windows XP will no longer receive security updates or technical support for the system, meaning their systems may become more vulnerable to security threats. Modern technology options abound The good news is that businesses in need of a technology facelift have a whole new world of devices and capabilities at their fingertips. For example, an array of Windows 8-enabled devices have become available in the last year, such as affordable tablets, laptops and other form factors that offer mobility and productivity at the same time. In addition, cloud technology has given small businesses access to the same powerful technology larger companies use, but in an affordable and manageable pricing structure. Many small businesses are using cloud technology to reach new customers and enable employees to collaborate from separate locations. One such company, OnPoint CFO & Controller Services, which provides outsourced accounting and finance services to companies, is using the cloud-based productivity service Office 365 to enable its employees to collaborate with one another and their clients while working from home offices. “Standing still is falling behind,” says Brian Clark, OnPoint CFO Co-founder, president and CEO. “Either you implement new technologies or you risk getting passed by your competitors.” Modern technology can help small businesses not only get more done, but reach more customers and retain them too. family focus Children Get Headaches, Too

By Mary B. Hammock, MSN, CPNP

any parents worry that headaches in children are signs of brain tumors or other serious medical conditions. However, headaches in children are common, and frequently attributed to acute illness and infection, including sinus, throat, and ear infections, and often accompany fever. Children also suffer from headaches attributed to high levels of stress or anxiety, just like their parents. Good health is the best method of prevention.

It is estimated that 25% of adult migraine suffers started with migraines before their fifth birthday. It is also known that children exhibiting car or motion sickness, with a family history of migraines, will often develop migraine headaches later. Adult’s migraines usually start in the early morning, whereas a child’s may develop in late afternoon. In general, a child’s migraine occurs on both sides of the head instead of just one side in adults. Also, an adult’s migraine usually lasts at least four hours but a child’s may last less than four hours. In general, migraines can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, sensitivity to light and sound, throbbing or pounding pain and pain that worsens with exertion. Even small children may get migraines, resulting in unexplained crying or holding their head. Tension headaches are the most common headache in children, not associated with illness. Emotional factors are the most common cause of tension headaches. Stressful situations at school, competition, family or friend friction or excessive demands placed by the child or the parent can induce the diffuse pain described as a tight band squeezing the head. Tension headaches can last from 30 minutes to several days. These headaches are usually not associated with nausea or vomiting and do not worsen with exertion. Younger children may withdraw from play or want to sleep more. Cluster headaches are not common in children under 12 years old. These headaches can occur in five or more episodes, ranging from one headache every other day to many headaches in a day. Sharp, stabbing pain on one side of the head lasting fifteen minutes to three hours is the hallmark of cluster headaches. These headaches are often accompanied by tearing, nasal congestion, restlessness or agitation. Most headaches aren’t serious but certain symptoms warrant further investigation. Any headache that wakes one from sleep, change’s one’s personality, includes vomiting more than once, follows a head injury, or is accompanied by fever and neck stiffness require immediate medical attention. More typical headaches require individualized treatment, depending on the age and weight of the child and the frequency and severity of the pain. Reassuring the child that the headaches are the result of no serious abnormality generally reduces the number and severity of attacks. Regular sleep and eating habits do a lot to stave off headaches. Be sure your child stays well hydrated, especially in hot and humid weather. Caffeine and simple sugar intake should be restricted and monitor the time spent in front of a screen. It is important to identify triggers of headaches and record them in a headache diary, including what took place or what was eaten at the time of the headache and what made the headache better or worse. Avoiding triggers is an important step in successfully treating headaches. Identifying stressors that trigger headaches and teaching coping skills are successful ways to treat tension headaches. OTC ibuprofen and acetaminophen can be used to provide relief and should be taken at the first sign of a headache. If headaches come monthly, are concerning or particularly distressing, or cause missed school days, seek guidance from your healthcare provider to determine if preventative therapy or counseling is necessary. Healthy Steps Pediatrics is helping to grow healthy children one step at a time. If your child suffers with headaches that need further evaluation, call 678-384-3480.

For Betsey, it’s very important that she make herself available to others, despite what she is going through. She created her own “Living Proof ” witness cards with the Bible verse, Isaiah 53:5. Her heart’s desire is to be a faithful witness for Christ to unsaved family and friends, while emphasizing the daily “JOY” of having a relationship with Jesus Christ, and the “FREEDOM” of knowing Him. Her diagnosis has not held her back, but has been the fuel that keeps her fire going. She continues to volunteer and witness to women here in Paulding and through out our country through organization like the Susan G. Koman Foundation, the Little Pink House of Hope, the Second Wind Retreat in Blue Ridge, and New York’s Comedy Cures. d, Linda Verscharen

Betsey (rt) with supportive frien

In addition to her volunteer work, Betsey loves the theater, art, fashion and traveling on mission trips. She has lived and worked in Europe on missions four times; once to France with her 85 year old mother. Since the last diagnosis, she has traveled all over the United States and has tentative plans for a trip to Ireland in the spring. Betsey Joyner has an infectious smile, positive personality, loves to laugh and make others laugh with her. She truly is living proof that with Christ, you really can laugh through the tears. 49 Hosiery Mill Road Suite 135 Dallas, GA 30157

t’s a New Year and for many of us that means making resolutions. It’s a time to reflect on the previous year and decide what changes and fresh starts we would like to make in our lives. It’s also a good time to reflect on what changes we could make in our dog’s life for a healthier pet too. Here are 10 Pet Resolutions you might want to consider making for your furry friend.

10 Dog New Year Resolutions Dental Hygiene - Healthy teeth and gums are important components for your dog’s overall well-being. Resolve to brush your dog’s teeth on a regular basis. Exercise - As it is with humans, dogs need plenty of exercise which will help prevent obesity and keep their muscles strong. Incorporate a 30 minute brisk walk with your dog daily and add another 30 minutes of a physical activity involving running, like chase. Veterinary Visits - Prevention is the best medicine. Be sure to take your dog to the vet for a complete annual exam and vaccination protection. Good Nutrition - Feed your dog a premium dog food to ensure he is getting the essential nutrients he needs to thrive..... and no more table scraps! Pet Insurance - If you can afford it, look into adding pet insurance. It’s worth the peace of mind it gives you knowing you will have the funds to care for your pet when he needs it. First Aid - Prepare a first aid kit for your dog. When the time comes to quickly tend to your dog’s minor injuries, you will be glad you have on-hand the items you need. -Obedience - Teach your dog the basic obedience commands: sit; stay; heel; down; come. Bonding - Be sure to spend some quality alone time with your pet daily. Whether you go together on a road trip, to the dog park, or just spend some time on belly rubs, it’s important to continually develop a strong relationship with your pet. Grooming - Groom your dog on a weekly basis. Make sure to at least brush your dog out weekly and check those nails for a trimming. Then, if necessary, you can arrange a monthly trip to a professional dog groomer to keep your dog looking and smelling great! Spay or Neuter Your Pets - This is super important to help with the pet population and studies have shown that dogs who have been fixed have a reduced risk of certain diseases.
