community spotlight Poker Ride Benefit May 17th, 2014

amp Dream began in 1975 as a nonprofit organization established to give special needs children the opportunity to thrive and have fun participating in outdoor recreational activities. Regardless of mental or physical disability, every special needs child is encouraged to attend one of the four yearly camp sessions during the summer months.

Camp Dream’s summer camp sessions are amazing for the children, counselors and volunteer staff. Their main focus is to allow these special kids the time to fellowship, play, have fun and just be children. There is never a cost to the campers, and the friendships and lasting memories made during these session are only a few of the benefits afforded to the beautiful children who attend. These children aren’t the only ones who benefit from their summer getaway. Having a special needs child requires a lot of dedication and very little ‘me’ time for their parents. Many have stated these camps are as beneficial for them, as they are for their child.

Camping sessions are currently held at the Roosevelt Warm Springs institute, and include fishing, dancing, bowling, arts and crafts, team games, horseback riding, and much more. In addition to the camping sessions, Camp Dream sponsors local programs during the year that are designed to bring the joys of the camp to the local special needs communities. These activities include dances, bowling outings, movie outings, trips to the Atlanta Braves, and other sporting and recreational events.

and Strikes early to visit with some of the kids and their parents. They will be participating in a Dream Roll from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Cheer them on as they help raise their own funds to attend camp, and enjoy an unforgettable experience bonding with these precious children. Camp Dream is hoping for a tremendous turnout, and currently looking for a Band, as well as raffle items, sponsorships, or monetary donations for the event..

Camp Dream is only able to host their camp sessions through the generosity of the people in our community through donations and participation in their fund raising events. Because many parents of special needs children lack the resources to pay for the camps, many children are awarded scholarships to attend.

If you would like to help Camp Dream or participate in the Poker Ride contact Valarie Dunn at 770-633-2920 or email Camp applications and more information about Camp Dream’s history, mission, and previous and upcoming camp sessions can be found on their website at www.CampDreamga. org or on their Facebook page at CampDream. They’re also currently in need of camp counselors (age 18 and up), junior counselors (age 1417) and volunteers. If you would like to apply, forms and more information are available on their website.

To fund these scholarships, Camp Dream’s next fundraising event is the Poker Ride to Benefit Camp Dream on May 17, 2014, and YOU can help! In the past, this event has been wildly successful and fun for adults and children alike. The Poker Ride will begin at Stars and Strikes at 2400 Hiram Acworth Hwy, Dallas, GA 30157. Registration begins at 11:30am, with the first bike out at 12:30pm, and the last bike in by 4:30pm. Come to Stars

Camp Dream wants to extend their sincere appreciation to the Paulding community in advance for their help and cooperation in helping make this summer’s camp sessions the best ever!

The Challenge of Achieving Work-Life Balance By Leisa A. Bailey, Ph.D.

ife is busy, and for most the ability to balance its many demands is an important challenge. While the admonitions to “Work to live…rather than live to work” are well known; Americans work longer hours, have fewer vacation days and leisure hours, and spend less time with friends and family than most other cultures. The ability to prioritize between work and personal demands is a skill which is necessary to maintain a sense of balance and health. Additionally, research shows that a poor work-life balance can result in unhealthy levels of stress, unhappiness, and even reduced productivity.

The consequences of poor work-life balance include fatigue which can cause poor personal and work performance; and a lack of time with friends and family which may lead to decrease sense of connection with others and cause relationship problems. Also, when work hours are routinely increased; there can be significant changes in what an employer expects in productivity. The higher expectation “sets up” unrealistic goals which necessitate more hours to achieve. This vicious cycle can be very difficult to alter.

Juggling the demands of career and personal life is an ongoing challenge. It is essential that each person make decisions based on what they truly want their lives to look like and then take the necessary actions to create it. While no single technique will work for everyone, these suggestions may be helpful to achieve the goal of better balance in life. n Carefully track your time to see how the hours are spent. Pay attention to daily tasks, including both work-related and personal activities. Examine this accounting to determine what is necessary and what satisfies you the most.

n Prioritize honestly and ruthlessly. The key is finding out what’s most important - in work activities as well as in your personal activities – and making sure this is reflected in your daily schedule. Give up on the idea that one can do or have everything.

n Give up perfectionism. Perfection can be a guide, but recognize that it is unattainable. Obstacles and challenges will interfere unexpectedly; mistakes will be made. n Take advantage of all available options. Flex hours, compressed workweek, job sharing, and telecommuting are becoming more available. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from your support system. n Learn to say no. When you quit accepting tasks out of guilt or a false sense of obligation, you’ll have more time for the activities that are meaningful to you. Before saying “yes” to anything, sleep on it.

The Beloved Kingdom Ministries is now interviewing for a

Praise/Worship Leader:

Ps. 100:1-2 Please e-mail your interests to Amen!

n Leave work at work. With the technology to connect to anyone at any time, there might be no boundary between work and home. This is a mistake. “Unplug” during meal times…keep your laptop out of your bedroom. Use technology to serve you, rather than abuse you. n Manage time well – even when it feels there is just not enough. At times it is ok to “squeeze it in.” If you don’t have the ability to have dinner with a friend…meet for coffee. Let yourself enjoy the time you do have, instead of lamenting the time you don’t.

Laffitte Law Group, LLC

n Practice the skill of “being where you are” and focusing fully on whatever task you are currently engaged in. Most forms of multi-tasking ultimately increase stress, versus focusing on one thing at a time.

Family Law, Criminal Defense, & Mediations Flat-fees for Uncontested Divorces

n Nurture yourself. Eat a healthy diet, include physical activity in your daily routine and get enough sleep. Set aside time for an activity that you enjoy and time to discover new activities to share with family or friends.

Creating work-life balance is an evolving process as your family, interests and work life change. Be open to the changes. What matters is the creation of a personally meaningful life that is happy and healthy.

“Attention Sciatica And Low Back Pain Sufferers…”

Could One Hour With Our Doctors Give You The Answer To Your Disc Pain?

Now, in Acworth, GA, Dr. Erin Arnold, D.C. & Dr. Amy Valente, D.C. have what may be the most important breakthrough in non-surgical back pain treatment. Before and after MRI studies have shown disc bulges shrink in size – even with the most painful cases of L4-L5 & L5-S1 herniations. If you’ve had disc problems for years, recently injured your back, or you’re suffering with sciatica, you must hear about these new studies. Scientific studies tell us that spinal discs are responsible for most of the aches and pains people suffer from. Discs act like a cushion between our backbones and allow for a space at each level so the nerves can exit the spinal column. When these discs get injured or wear out from bad posture, they begin to degenerate and cause pain. Bulging and herniations begin to form, pressing on the nerve roots. If the herniations occur at L4-L5, they can severely compromise the large sciatic nerve, causing muscle weakness, tingling, and severe pain. The most common invasive treatment for disc herniations is surgery. This costs quite a bit of money. Even with health insurance the patient is left with their own portion of the bill, in excess of $10,000-$15,000, and sometimes more. The recovery time and missed work can be anywhere from 3 to 6 months, not to mention the obvious severe risks associated with all surgery.

p Try dangerous back surgery p Just live with it If you’re like most, none of these have worked for you or you are afraid of what could happen if you do try some of these. Exercising makes you hurt more, pain medications and muscle relaxers cover up the problem and give you side effects. Pain shots can cause more pain, don’t work or don’t last very long or FIX the problem, back surgery didn’t work, or made you worse. Or maybe you were one of the lucky ones that back surgery actually helped, but now the problem is back with a vengeance. Whatever your situation, you owe it to yourself to check into a Breakthrough Computerized Non-Surgical Treatment for back pain and sciatic or leg pain caused by a bulging, herniated or squashed disc or discs. It has helped hundreds of people who were suffering just like you. This new treatment machine we are calling “the squashed disc machine.”

But here’s the biggest problem… there is a high failure rate of back surgery. One medical study found that on average, 53% of L5-S1 back surgeries fail to produce relief of symptoms (International Orthop 1987.)

How “Good” Discs become “Bad” Discs Over time the discs in your back tend to get squashed or compressed, especially if you’ve played certain sports when younger or have a job that requires lots of sitting or standing in one place for long periods of time. Car accidents, lifting things, very physical jobs just to name a few.

Before You Go Under The Knife And Opt For Spinal Surgery… You should seriously consider a less invasive approach called spinal decompression.

It’s kind of like a cookie with cream filling, and the cream filling will start to ooze out from between the sides of the cookie if pressure is applied on top of the cookie (like gravity on our spines).

Non-surgical spinal decompression is a new technology that has been proven to reverse disc herniations. It creates a vacuum effect on the disc, which pulls the disc back into its normal position and brings in a fresh blood supply to promote healing.

Eventually this happens to a lot of us. Statistics show over 80% of Americans will suffer with back pain some time in their life.

Do You Have A Disc Problem? If you experience any of the following in your back or neck, chances are your pain is due to a disc bulge, herniation or degeneration: u A vice-like squeezing feeling in your back u Sitting causes back or leg pain u Stabbing pain at the belt line or in your neck u Can’t turn over in bed without hurting u Numbness in your toes or fingers u Fire down your legs u Searing pain radiates into your arm u Prickling in your leg or toes Finally, Some Good News…… If you’ve been suffering with back pain or arm/leg pain caused by a disc bulge, disc herniation or squashed or compressed discs. Until recently, the only advice for many of you suffering in pain was to try what you’ve been told: p Try exercising p Try physical therapy p Try pain medications p Try muscle relaxers p Try pain shots

I started at North Cobb Spine & Nerve Institute for pain in my low back that traveled down my right leg. The pain felt like a burning sensation down my leg and numbness into my toes. I was unable to walk my normal 5 miles. Since starting the spinal decompression therapy I am now able to walk again without any pain. The pain and numbness down my right leg is completely alleviated. I was surprised to find that I am even sleeping better at night and that the tension in my upper back has also been relieved. The staff here has treated my great and is very caring! Thanks Bill Norman My initial reason for coming to North Cobb Spine & Nerve was for the need to get rid of the pain, numbness and tingling sensation in my left hip and leg. The spinal decompression treatment has greatly helped relieve that pain and numbness. I am now able to walk straight again, without pain and my posture has also improved. My family has noticed also that I am feeling better. I am now able to do things with them without dragging behind. The atmosphere and care here at North Cobb Spine & Nerve is very caring, nice and helpful. The most amazing thing about the care is how soon I noticed the difference in myself! Thank you, Deborah McGrew Before I started getting spinal decompression therapy I was having severe pain in my low back and numbness down my leg constantly. I had been suffering with this for 3 years. I had two nerve abrasions, multiple steroid shots in my back, pain killers, PT and water therapy and nothing worked. After the first spinal decompression treatment I could stand up straight with very little pain. I can now sleep through the night and exercise again. I am 90-100% better and I am so thankful I found this office. Thanks, John Ratledge

Spinal decompression treatments are very gentle. In fact, every once in a while I even catch a patient sleeping during treatment! How Does This Machine Work? Haven’t you ever had the thought…”Gosh, if somebody could just pull me apart…I would feel a whole lot better.” Yeah, we know you have. And it kind of makes a bit of sense. Well someone else, actually a medical manufacturer, back pain specialists, neurosurgeons and engineers have come up with just that. A machine that gently pulls your apart, stretches the disc to a certain point that causes a drop in pressure inside the disc (like a little vacuum in the middle of the cream filling) causing the cream filling to suck back in! You’ll simply lie on your stomach or back, whichever is comfortable, and then a specialized belt is gently put around your waist. We’ll set the machine to focus on your problem area – then the advanced decompression computer system will do the rest. Most patients feel better with just a few treatments, and best of all there will be no dangerous drugs, no invasive procedures, and no painful exercises. Does Decompression really work? Absolutely! When you come in we will provide you

with studies that show why decompression is a preferred method of treatment. But what provides the best “proof” on how well decompression works is what patients say about it. Just Listen to What Our Patients Had to Say:

As you can see, spinal decompression has a high success rate with helping disc herniations, sciatica, and back pain. In just a matter of weeks you could be back on the golf course, enjoying your love life, or traveling again. Feel the Improvement – and Say “Yes” to Life Again With my “Decompression Evaluation” we’ll be able to find the problem and then get to work on it. Think of how you’ll feel in just a few short weeks. See and feel your life change for the better. Start your body on the way to pain-free, normal living, feel tight joints rest, relax, free up, muscles tied in knots will become more supple and strength in your muscles may increase. You’re able to live life like a normal person again, without back pain – able to play with your kids, enjoy time with friends, and finally get a good night’s rest.

hat would Good Friday look like if Jesus had decided to take care of Himself – for just this one day?

If you are over the age of about 20, you have probably seen the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Let me rephrase that. If you’re over 20, you’ve probably seen the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life” a ridiculous number of times. We know the story. We’ve wept with George Bailey and smiled as Clarence got his wings. Spoiler alert! Just in case you have not memorized the movie yet, let me remind you of the plot. George Bailey has consistently given up his dreams in order to help others. But, after a series of hardships (including the loss of $8000 from his bank), he’s ready to commit suicide…on Christmas Eve. His friends pray for him and ultimately, the guardian angel Clarence comes to show George what the world would have been like without his life of generosity.

What Would Good Friday Look Like Without Generosity?

the historical equivalent of me (unknown) l Nero’s reputation would be much kinder and gentler l The world would have missed out on much of the genius of Dante, Michelangelo, Mozart l Many more people would have died brutal, isolated deaths during the plagues l Formal education would have faced worldwide setbacks l It’s doubtful that the United States would have been founded on democratic principles growing out of a desire for religious freedom l Mother Teresa would have simply been Agnes – a girl with a sensitive heart l Billions of charitable dollars would be missing from the economy to care for everyday necessities such as food, shelter and clothing

l Creation would be groaning…with no hope l Sin would not be hindered…it would reign unchecked (scary, considering how devastating it is after its power has been broken) l The Holy Spirit would only visit by appointment, not residing or abiding, but only visiting l The kingdom of God would not be near l We would still need prophets to tell us the truth and teachers to show us the way l There would be no churches and the Jews would still be sacrificing animals for the sins of their people l An eye for an eye would still trump forgiveness and grace

For a short time, fictional-George gets to see fictional-life without his fictional-generosity. But, what if we could see this in the midst of reality? What if we could see the world minus Jesus’s Good Friday Generosity?

I would guess that you could add to that list. If Jesus had been selfish – for just a few hours one Friday – the spiritual implications would have been huge.

All of those things were hinging on the decisions of Jesus on Good Friday. Each historical and spiritual issue was riding on the generosity of Jesus. And if He wanted to wreck the whole thing, all he had to do was say, “I’ve worked really hard to take care of others. So, today is my day. Today, I choose to take care of me – and to enjoy the fruits of this world. But, just for today.”

Historical Implications of Jesus’s Generosity

Good Friday matters.

Spiritual Implications of Jesus’s Generosity

In addition to the spiritual implications, the historical ramifications would have been large as well: l The calendar would not consist of BC and AD references l Pontius Pilate and so many others would have been

As I have thought about that question, a few obvious things spiritual have come to mind: l Salvation would still be a dream – something espoused by the prophets

And apparently generosity does as well. John Richardson is the Communications Director of GenerousChurch. For more information visit GenerousChurch. com.

Easter Tradition Brings Beautiful Flowers

hardwood mulch should work fine. Your goal is to provide the bulbs some protection from cold snaps and reduce weed competition. In the spring, your work will be rewarded with new green growth. However, your Easter Lilies won’t bloom at Easter in your yard. The potted plants were grown in nurseries under controlled conditions and forced to bloom at Easter. In our landscapes, Easter Lilies bloom in the summer months. Their flowering is dependent upon warm temperatures and having enough light, but when they flower, they will be just as beautiful and fragrant in summer as they were at Easter. Mary Carol Sheffield is the Paulding County Extension Coordinator and Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources. For more information on gardening in Paulding, contact a Master Gardener or the County Extension Agent at 770-443-7616 or check out online at

very year at Easter, you can find the beautiful white flowers of the Easter lily, Lilium longiflorum, gracing the altars at churches and for sale in nurseries. Covered in large, showy white flowers, Easter Lilies have come to represent the essence of Easter: purity, virtue, innocence, hope and life. If you receive an Easter lily this holiday, you’ll be glad to know that it can be planted outdoors in our area and is considered a perennial; it will return and flower year after year. Care for it well, and you will be rewarded with a yearly show of large, beautiful, trumpet shaped white flowers. How can you make this happen?

Prepare an area for planting your Easter Lilies that is in full sun. Amend the soil in the area well, as Easter Lilies like a well-drained soil and our native soil tends to be heavy, compacted clay. Add at least 4 inches of compost or other fine organic matter and mix it down into the soil to a depth of about 8 eight inches in the planting area. Turn it in to mix it well with the native soil. This will improve the texture of the soil and help improve drainage, so that the Easter Lilies bulb and roots will not become wet and rotted. Plant Easter lily bulbs 3 inches below ground level and put about 1 foot of space between bulbs. Spread the roots in the planting hole and then cover with soil. Water the bulbs after you have planted them. The original plants will begin to die back to the ground. Wait until after the leaves have withered to cut the stems back to the soil surface. This will allow them to retain the energy created by the green leaves. The plants should start to put on new growth soon after you cut them back. In the fall, be sure to provide a nice layer of mulch to insulate the bulbs through the cooler months. You can use any mulch that suits you-pinestraw, pine bark, or any

medical profile

By Kurt Carroll, Sales Director of MYidealDOCTOR

Have You Had Your Yearly Skin Check?

hat is “Telemedicine?” That was my question when a close friend and mentor asked me to go to work with him at MYidealDOCTOR in the summer of 2012.

Telemedicine is basically a “Doctor visit over the phone.” It is best described by my giving you a real life scenario that seems to play out time and time again at my house. I am the father of two ‘perfect’ boys; Riley is 12 and Ryan is 6. My boys have many things in common - their looks, their stature, their blue eyes, etc. But the one thing they have in common that can be a bit frustrating is that they only get sick on weekends and holidays!

Did You Know...

R Everyone needs a yearly skin check. R Light hair, fair skin & sunburns before

the age of 18 increase your risk of skin cancer.

R Rough, dry, scaly patches, pearly white bumps or irregularly shaped moles/ lesions could be signs of skin cancer.

R More than 3 million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. this year.

This is how the story would go before MYidealDOCTOR. My son would come home from school on Friday afternoon, feeling a bit warm. Later Friday night his fever would elevate and his ear would begin to hurt. We would treat his fever and pain with Tylenol until Monday morning at which time we would call the pediatrician and get an appointment for late Monday afternoon - if we were lucky. We would drive to the pediatrician’s office to sit in the “sick waiting room” next to a child with a stomach virus. After waiting 45 minutes past our appointment time, we would finally be called back to the exam room only to wait some more. The doctor would eventually come in, look in his throat and in his ears and say, “Yes, he has an ear infection. I am going to give you a prescription for bubble gum flavored amoxicillin and ear drops.” We finally return home, having been gone for 3 ½ to 4 hours from the time we left. Now, fast forward to present day and let’s address the same scenario with telemedical benefits from MYideaDOCTOR. My son comes home from school on Friday, feeling a bit warm. Later Friday night his fever elevates and his ear begins to hurt. I place a call to MYidealDOCTOR. A nurse answers the phone and asks how she can help. I explain to her what is going on with my son and tell her that I need to speak with a doctor. She asks a few relevant questions about my son’s medical history and allergies and tells me that a doctor will return my call. In less than 20 minutes, a Board Certified doctor calls and asks me to explain in detail the symptoms that my son is experiencing. After a few questions, it is very clear to the doctor that my son has an ear infection. The doctor informs me that he will call a prescription in to my pharmacy for bubble gum flavored amoxicillin and ear drops. Within 30 minutes of my initial call, my son has medicine to relieve his symptoms and the healing process can begin. All this was done from the comfort of my home. This is telemedicine. The American Medical Association has stated that 70% of all doctor visits and 40% of all emergency room visits could be addressed with telemedical services like those offered from MYidealDOCTOR.

From the desk of Dr. Luciann Moyher This is a great time in healthcare for chiropractic to shine. At Dallas Chiropractic we take a holistic approach to healthcare. Some chiropractors adjust the spine only, in fact, some only the upper neck. But, Dr. Moyher has always believed in working on the entire spine from upper neck to the sacrum. After 25 years of working with patients, she has expanded her scope of practice to include nutrition, allergy work, and detoxification as well. Again, this is an important time in our history for all of these ideals to be put into action. Americans are sicker than ever. Our bodies are stressed by what’s in the water we drink, the air we breath , and the food we eat. Everyone is on emotional overload at home and in the workplace. All of this affects our health. When Chiropractic began over 120 years ago, the world was not as toxic as it is today. Adjusting the spine and relieving any nerve interference led to miraculous results. But, the world is very different today. The human body does not have the same capacity to respond. We have to work harder at health. An approach must be taken considering the triad of health; structural , chemical and emotional. This is why we offer other services at Dallas Chiropractic. On staff we have an excellent massage therapist, we utilize two different types of cold laser for healing as well as the BAX 3000 laser for allergy sensitivity treatment. We give alkaline, Kangen water FREE to all our patients as well as Zyto biofeedback testing. There are also other basic therapies used to help muscle spasms, fascia and ligaments. Such therapies would include the ultrasound, thumper massager, the massage chair and the muscle stim. Dr. Moyher has taken extensive courses in nutrition , Cranio – Sacral techniques and acupressure meridians. Adjusting the spine comes first, but in many cases, there are more factors to a complete health puzzle.

health Strategies for Surviving the Spring Allergy Season

Paulding’s Most Personal Weight Loss Center Paulding’s # 1 Weight Loss Experts The Best Plans at the Best Prices l Free Consultation

ven though we’re still experiencing some chilly weather, spring has sprung and pollen counts are up. Here are some strategies to help get you through these pollen filled days: Don’t line dry. Hanging laundry outside is a surefire way to capture allergens. Pollen will easily stick whatever is on the line. If you must air dry, do so indoors.

Don’t stop to smell the flowers. Yes, they’re pretty, but sniffing them can only aggravate your symptoms. Fragrances and pollen from jasmine, narcissus, and gardenia are most likely to make you sneeze. Enjoy allergy-friendly plants and flowers include gladiolus, periwinkle, begonia, iris, and orchid. Eat right. You can fight allergies with your diet. Vitamin C-rich foods have been shown to unblock clogged sinuses, so load up on grapefruit, oranges, kale, mustard greens, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts. Research suggests that quercetin—found in black tea, green tea, apples, red onions, and berries—inhibits the release of histamines, which trigger itching, sneezing, a runny nose, and watery eyes; and pineapple and papaya contain bromelain, a mixture of enzymes thought to improve seasonal allergy symptoms.

Forget the fan. Beat the heat with air conditioning, not fans. Window fans can invite pesky pollen and mold spores into your home. When you’re in the car, you should likewise keep cool with AC. Sorry, sunroof!

Leave your shoes at the door. It’s not just your dog who tracks allergens inside the house. Pollens can hitch a ride inside on shoes, so take them off either before stepping foot indoors or immediately upon entry. Maintain the dog. When your Golden retriever, ‘Buddy’ frolics in the grass, he collects allergens like mold and pollen. Wash his paws before allowing him back into the house. Use a salt water spray. Salt water can restore moisture to dry nasal passages, while lessening the inflammation of mucous membranes. Prepare your own by mixing 8 ounces of water with half a teaspoon of table salt in a squirt bottle. Use it twice a day: when you wake up in the morning, and again in the evening. You will get the most benefit from a salt-spray if use it regularly without skipping days. Stay inside. Rather exercising outdoors, take your exercise routine to the nearest gym. It’s important to postpone outside activity until after 12pm since plants typically pollinate in the early-morning hours. The website displays pollen counts for every area in the country. When levels are high, you’ll know to take extra steps to limit your time outside. The highest pollen levels are typically recorded on warm, dry, and windy days, while the lowest are on windless, wet, and cloudy days. Wash your hair. Your hair is a pollen magnet, so take care not to pollinate your house when you go indoors. If you fall asleep with pollen in your hair, it will attach to your pillow, potentially causing nighttime allergy flare-ups. Allergist recommend washing your hair before going to bed at night. Also, take it a step further by washing bed linens at least once a week in 130-degree water. This will rid your bed of pollen and kill dust mite eggs - another symptom trigger. Wear sunglasses. Wearing oversized shades can prevent pollen from getting into your eyes and eyelids. Also, sport a pollen mask and gloves while you’re outside, and avoid touching your face and eyes.

A fresh coat of paint is an inexpensive way to transform a tired look into a vibrant vision. Choosing the perfect shade is often the most time consuming and nerve-wracking part of the process. Knowing this, paint manufacturers are coming to the rescue and providing many new tools to help give you the color confidence you need.

DANNY’S PRESSURE WASHING Available 7 Days a Week

For example, Home Depot and Lowes offer small-size paint samples that can be tinted in your favorite shades and applied directly to the walls you’re interested in painting. These color paint samples help you visualize how the entire space will look before investing time and money on a large painting project. Plus, the most of the color samples are available in highest-quality interior paint so you can test its best paint and perfect color together.

Simple sampling

Once you have a sample size of your perfect shade of paint, it’s time to test your hunch. Apply the sample paint on several walls. This will help you envision the color’s look in various light sources, both natural and artificial. Be sure to check the painted wall at different times of the day - giving you a truer view of the end results. If you prefer, you can paint large white poster boards with your sample paint and move them around the room to verify your vision.

Ericka Kay

When testing multiple colors, avoid painting sample strips too close together as this might distort the appearance of the color. When you’re happy with a color selection, head to a local retailer to purchase the paint tinted in the quantities you need.

Real Estate Specialist

Size up your projects

The fun doesn’t have to stop with the walls. The color samples can also work for smaller interior projects because the sample contains a premium paint. Try stenciling your favorite inspirational sayings or words of wisdom on your living room or office area walls. Another quick project is to use the samples to paint the trim on picture frames or mirrors to coordinate with your newly painted room.

Add some final touches

After you plan your painting projects, it’s important to prepare for the small details and finishing touches that help bring everything together. Break out the hot glue gun, some of your favorite springtime silk flowers and bright ribbons to make a whimsical wreath for the entrance to your home. When April showers bring May flowers, you will already have the perfect entryway accessory to welcome in the new season - and guests.

Whether entertaining friends and family or simply relaxing alone with a good book, having an outdoor oasis is crucial to enjoying warmer days and nights. Spring Time is Pest Control Time

By Bob Hamilton

system is not functioning properly it will invite mosquitoes and other insects to drop by.

ould you want any type of pest running through your home? I should think not. Spring time presents pest problems for many homeowners. Therefore, you will definitely want to implement pest control measures when the weather starts warming up.

around your home and look for areas that are structurally degraded. These areas include things such as rotting wood and cracks in your foundation. If you notice any of these problems, then you should get it fixed immediately. The quicker you seal up cracks, the sooner you can stop worrying so much about pests.

As far as pest control is concerned, it is vital to keep excessive amounts of moisture around your home at bay. All types of pests require moisture in order to survive.  If you have standing water around your foundation, it will not only cause damage to it, but will also attract pests.  Increased levels of humidity in rooms in your home will also attract pests, so you may need to invest in a dehumidifier.

Spring signals the beginning stages of life as plenty of new creatures are born. You will likely have plenty of insects around your home. Carpenter ants and termites can cause a lot of destruction as you probably already know. Although, these two pests can give homeowners fits at any time of the year. Stinging insects can also be pests during the spring, and throughout the summer. This is particularly true if they construct a nest somewhere near your home. No one wants roaches or rats in their home either. What makes spring so hard to deal with is it brings plenty of rainfall depending on where you live. With increased moisture around, pests will have an abundant water source to survive. They will especially be attracting to areas of standing water near your home. If your gutter

During the spring, most homeowners start cutting the grass, trimming the hedges, and other lawn maintenance tasks. Always keep your yard as clean as possible so pests do not setup nests or other forms of shelter. Things like dead plants, overgrown shrubs, fallen fruit and foliage can all attract pests. Also, do not have any containers lying around in your yard if they are not needed. Whenever it rains, water will collect in the containers and start attracting pests. Attics and basements are common areas for pests to sleep undisturbed. If you use these areas to store old boxes, then it will really make nice hiding places for them. Keep your storage spaces tidy and do your best to limit the amount of dust that accumulates inside them.

Make sure you never leave any leftover food lying around your kitchen. Even the smallest crumb will attract rodents, ants, and other creatures. Make it a habit to sweep up your kitchen on a daily basis if you can. Frequent vacuuming around your home is also very important for ensuring pests are not attracted to the debris.

You may think that bed bugs have gone away, but they are making a dramatic return. Keep an eye on your bedding, mattresses, and box springs to ensure they have not already begun an infestation.

Pests will obviously need to find some way into your home. Unfortunately for homeowners, there are many possible entrance points they can use. Take a walk

Spending quality time in and around your home does pay off, and increases the chances of a pest-free spring.

Exploring Seattle

By Pam Walker

love to travel….internationally and domestically. Having never been to Washington State, Seattle seemed like a good destination. Well…if you like clouds shrouded mornings and cool weather (enough to wear fleece every day), go to Seattle. Even in the middle of July, the temperatures here are in the 50’s. Conversely, summer afternoons can get as high as the upper 80’s.

so they can be placed on the ice and sold. The fresh flower stalls are also unbelievably breathtaking. How lucky to live in an area where these beautiful arrangements can be purchased so inexpensively. There are many other things to see in and around the Seattle area. Chinatown, the Seattle Aquarium and oh yes, the Seattle Underground (kind of sounds like Atlanta!) However, when you only have one long weekend to enjoy, you have to pick and choose cautiously.

I guess this is why they have such good wine growing areas. Just 15 miles out of the city you can visit more than 45 wineries. Oh my! Large and small, they all have wine tastings! But why spend your time tasting wine where there is so much more to do? Visit the San Juan Islands for a day and kayak within 20 feet of whales. Drive to Mt. Rainier and hike down the mountain after a gondola ride to the top. I personally liked the side trip to Olympic National Park where from the top of Hurricane Ridge you can see the Pacific, as well as, a range of snowy mountains and where Elk Mountain rises from the ocean to 6764 Ft. In Seattle itself there are tons of things to do with ferry boats leaving about every half hour to get you where you want to go. A visit to the Tillicum Village will get you a ferry ride, a salmon bake and a show about the local

tribes on a pristine island setting. The Chihuly Garden and Glass is a huge complex where the artist displays his monumental sculptures including a 1,340 piece, 100-foot-long sculpture. It’s located near the base of the Space Needle, another must see in Seattle. Pike Market on Sunday morning (or any morning) is something you won’t want to miss. Perhaps the second most famous attraction in Seattle, huge crowds gather around the fish stalls. Workers unpack fresh shipments and then throw the fish… large fish…. across the crowds

On my way to the airport for my flight home, I made one final stop to visit the Museum of Flight on the grounds of the Boeing Aircraft Factory. Board the 1st supersonic Concord, or US president’s Eisenhower & Kennedy’s Air Force One. Don’t miss the museum filled with antique planes from Orville Wrights’ first flight to a NASA Space Shuttle. There is even a replica of a Control Tower to “play” in. Along with Seattle’s famous coffee houses on every block and all the other things to do here, I could have spent a lot more time exploring this great city. If you take a trip, I truly hope you’ll get to see and do the things I missed. Pam Walker is a Virtuoso Travel Advisor and can be reached at

Five Insider Tips to Save Money When Buying a Car

s the weather warms, car buying season gets into full swing. Even though interest rates are still at or near record lows, there are additional ways smart buyers are saving even more cash on their next vehicle and staying within their budgets.

Mention this ad for

on first time charters (two hour minumim)

Barry Masters

“Purchasing power is crucial when it comes to buying a vehicle and it’s important to make sure you’re spending within your financial means,” says Joe Pendergast, assistant vice president of Consumer Lending at Navy Federal Credit Union.”Along with conducting research before choosing a make and model, there are steps you can take to ensure you’re getting the best possible deal.” Here are five tips from Pendergast to get the most car for your money with a payment you can live with:

Step 1: Know what you can afford

Your first step when making any large purchase should be to assess your current financial situation. Review your monthly income, subtract all anticipated expenses, and make sure there’s money left to not only afford a car payment, but also to contribute to your savings. Adding a car payment to your monthly budget shouldn’t leave you without money remaining for things like groceries or unexpected expenses.

Step 2: Review your credit inventory

Take a comprehensive look at your current debt. Are you in good-standing on all prior loan commitments and credit cards? If not, it may be difficult to obtain financing at a low interest rate, which will result in a higher monthly payment. So, if you’re behind on other loans, take the steps now to get in good shape to purchase a car. Go back to step 1 if need be. Once you’ve made sure all your debts are in good-standing and that you’re financially able to take on a car payment, you’re ready for the next step.

Step 3: Check your credit report and score

Getting a car loan at the best possible rate requires a good credit score. Before applying for an auto loan, it’s best to get a copy of your credit report. Although financial institutions will check your credit when applying for a loan, having your report in advance gives you the chance to correct any discrepancies before applying. This leads to a quicker application process and prevents denial because of a credit report error unbeknownst to you.

Step 4: Shop around for the best rate

Before walking into a dealership, check interest rates at different lenders and read the fine print for any hidden fees. The key to a good auto loan is striking the right balance between the rate and how long to finance the loan. New vehicles will have a lower interest rate, but the monthly payments will be larger. Look for the shortest term you can afford without breaking your budget.

Step 5: Get pre-approved

Once you’ve shopped around, increase your buying power by visiting your chosen lender and getting a quick, pre-approved loan. A salesperson will be more willing to bargain if how much you’ve been approved for and what are willing to pay has already been determined. Keep your payment threshold in mind and allow your preapproval to lead discussions at the negotiating table. It will result in purchasing a car at a price that’s right for your budget. If you’re looking to purchase a vehicle this spring, follow these five steps to ensure you’re buying within your means and getting the best possible deal. By doing your homework and talking with a lender, you’ll save as much as possible.

Plan an Easter egg hunt. In preparation, show your children the fine art of dying Easter eggs. To eliminate messy clean-up, give them an apron and let them stand on a chair at the stove to dip the hard-boiled eggs into the dye mixture. Keep the freshly dyed eggs in the refrigerator until time for the egg hunt. Kids may rather help hide the eggs this year and watch the excitement on the faces of the other children as they discover the edible treasures. If the children don’t want to use real eggs, they can fill plastic eggs with tiny treats and hide them for other kids to find.

Children can make their own Easter greeting cards this year. They can demonstrate their creativity with glitter, stickers, and cheerful words of love. When they are done, let them hand deliver their Easter well wishes to friends and family members. Homemade cards show that kids have put some time and thought into what they are going to say. While the kids are on a roll, get them to make some Easter decorations to get everyone in the spirit. Have them write up a list of what supplies they will need to create their decorations. They have to learn to work together and come up with one comprehensive list. Knowing that you trust them to be in charge will thrill the children. Make sure you set up a place for them to work undisturbed. Check on them from time to time to make sure they haven’t glued themselves to the table, but otherwise they will let you know if they need help. Holiday time is not just for you, but also for your children. Easter is about peace and love. They need to learn from you fun ways to celebrate and become a part of the family traditions.

What is Easter all about? At home or in your church, ask the children to read the Easter story. Once they are finished, ask them to tell you in their own words what the true celebration of Easter is all about. In the Christian tradition, the Easter holiday symbolized the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. People all over the world can now live free because He gave His life for the sins of all mankind. Sunrise services are held at churches to remember the women who went to Jesus’ tomb early that Sunday morning and found that He was no longer there. If your children have questions about the season, be prepared to answer.

Give the children a pet. On Easter, the most popular ones are rabbits and baby chicks. Teach them how to care for their new addition to the family. Rabbits and chicks need to be handled gently just like a newborn human baby. Show them how to feed, water, and clean their pets. Let the children know that their pet is not a toy. Giving children a pet helps them learn responsibility for something other than themselves. You may need to assist them until they get the hang of things.

aster is right around the corner. People are preparing for a time spent with family and friends at a big Sunday dinner. Let the children help you prepare for the Easter activities this year and maybe learn a thing or two.

Valid at all locations. Must present coupon. Dine-in only. One coupon per table/party. Not valid on holidays, special events, or with other discounts. Expires 4/30/14.

Recently, David was asked to photograph the Top 5 Athletes in Paulding County.  Always pushing the creative envelope, David brought the same enthusiasm he brings when he’s hired to shoot for his commercial clients.  No matter if he’s shooting a mother’s belly bump, a family portrait or a wedding, David will surpass expectations and bring the experience to a whole new creative level. David has a mastery of lighting, styling, editing and most of all, a vision for capturing a portrait in time that tells the perfect story. (DOB ~10-01-2002) – Looking For Love! She’s a beautiful Seal Point Mitted Ragdoll whose owner recently died. A friend took Sophie but could not keep her so she surrendered SOPHIE to us. SOPHIE liked the friend’s cat and tolerated her dog, so SOPHIE would do fine in a home with other animals. She is quiet, inactive, and tolerates, but doesn’t like to be held much, and she would love to find a home where she could be happy on her own terms and live out the remainder of her life with a family who loves her for who she is. SOPHIE recently had her annual checkup, so she is up-to-date with vaccines, and at the time of adoption, SOPHIE will receive at least 30 days of prepaid pet health insurance. SOPHIE’s adoption fee is our senior fee of $100.00. To see all our cats available for adoption, please visit, then emails us,, or call 678-522-2152, to schedule an appointment to meet your new family member! ***Fancy Feline Rescue of the South is in need of volunteer help ranging from cleaning, feeding, and socializing our cats at the rescue center to helping out at our weekend adoption events twice monthly at the Kennesaw Petsmart. pet news

Hiram Animal Hospital

o Kill Paulding reported a 23% REDUCTION in the kill rate in Paulding Animal Control (PCAC) in 2013. This reduced rate was no accident. Many people, in many capacities, some working full time jobs, have stepped forward to help make this happen. Local businesses helped volunteers with fundraisers supporting the No Kill Paulding fund at The West GA Spay/Neuter Clinic. This clinic helped those who specifically adopted from PCAC receive a discounted rate on spay/ neuter and rabies shots, thus making it more affordable for people to adopt.

No Kill Paulding has several outdoor adoptions throughout the year. Because of this, more than 200 less animals were processed through the shelter in 2013 versus 2012, and nearly 200 more were adopted. Rescues such as RescueCats, Animal Savers, Cherokee Humane Society, Fancy Feline, Mostly Mutts, Half the Way Home, Atlanta Persian Siamese, Atlanta Humane Society, and more, have greatly added to those rescue numbers as well. Citizens signed up to be fosters or volunteers for these rescues, and as a result, 358 more animals went to rescue in 2013 than in 2012. There were months that more cats went to rescue than had gone in entire years previously. Shelter volunteers give tirelessly of themselves delivering animals to rescues throughout other counties in Georgia. So that pet’s pictures and videos would be available on Facebook, volunteers spend hours snapping and posting pictures to inspire people to adopt on PCAC’s Save a Life Tuesday, a program which has also greatly helped animals get adopted before euthanasia day. There are many ways to support the shelter pets. Yard sales, bake sales, online fundraisers, and petitions have assisted in raising the needed funds for vetting and sponsoring pets for adoption or rescue. Even local businesses (The Regal Beagle and Tractor Supply Store) and their customers donated free bath coupons for newly adopted pets and free food to help those that might have to otherwise surrender their pets. This greatly improves pet retention. Several local vets even provided discounted services to help more pets go to rescue.

So you see, the 23% reduction in the 2013 euthanasia rate was no accident. It was a great effort made by many people, in many ways, to save the lives of these pets. As good as this rate is, however, this is only the beginning. 2013 demonstrated that the “11 Steps of the No Kill Equation” work, and the wonderful outcome is that 816 less animals died in 2013 than in 2012. The good news is that so far, in 2014 the numbers continue to decline. So with your help, just imagine what we can do together for the remainder of the year. No Kill Paulding hopes you have been inspired to adopt/foster or sponsor an animal yourself. Maybe you will adopt from PCAC, but wherever you choose to adopt, you have definitely saved a life.
