I
I’M WRITING THIS FROM THE KITCHEN ISLAND as my husband makes dinner. He’s got tacos and burgers on the go while the kids flit in and out, dogs following close behind. It’s a lot of activity for a room whose 1960s layout was designed for a different lifestyle. Today, there’s always someone grabbing a snack, checking what’s for dinner or passing through. I have big plans for the space, and I look forward to the day we can renovate it to better suit the way we live. When I visit the homes we feature, I’m always interested in how lifestyle influences design. No two kitchens are the same, and each one is tailored to different needs and routines. In Joanne and Gary’s home (page 46), Philip Fernandes designed a space for an avid home cook, incorporating high-end appliances and plenty of room to prepare meals and entertain. In a home built by HD Development Group (page 26), Michael Habib prioritized everyday family life with young children. The arrival of fall always brings a sense of homecoming. As the cooler weather ushers us back indoors, our kitchens once again become gathering places for hearty meals, leisurely baking or simply hanging out. And since the season offers so much fresh local produce, there’s plenty of inspiration for the next meal. Wishing you a wonderful and delicious fall,

THIS CAN BE ACHIEVED STRUCTURALLY THROUGH A FEW ELEGANT DESIGN ELEMENTS: Interior Glass Partitions: These maintain a visual connection and allow natural light to filter through the house while blocking sound. PHOTO: GORDON KING AS SEEN IN OUR HOMES OTTAWA SUMMER 2026

The Return of
THE ROOM
Designer Tamarisk McNalty Stephens shares her ideas.
The open floor plan has reigned supreme for decades, but a quiet shift is happening. Homeowners are beginning to crave boundaries again, leading to a resurgence of defined spaces. However, because few want to return to entirely closed-plan living, “micro-zoning” has emerged as a movement that creates distinct areas tailored to specific activities.
The Everyday Drawbacks
The Origins of the Open Plan
Visual Clutter: Whether it’s dishes on the island, toys or fitness gear scattered across the floor, maintaining a sense of calm becomes a constant battle.
In older homes, room sizes were largely dictated by structural limitations; load-bearing walls were necessary to support floors and roofs. Yet, these divisions also served a lifestyle purpose. The kitchen was purely utilitarian and tucked out of sight. Dining was a daily ritual celebrated in a dedicated room, allowing families to break bread without the visual distraction of dirty dishes. Parlours were designed specifically for guests and often outfitted with fancy furniture for conversation (not for sprawling comfort – long before screens dominated our attention). As residential engineering progressed, steel beams and engineered lumber enabled larger spans with fewer interior supports. The open-concept main floor was born. It quickly became the preferred choice for modern homeowners because it felt expansive, allowed natural light to spill from wall to wall, maximized flow when entertaining and let parents supervise young children while preparing meals. 16 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6
HOWEVER, LIVING IN A HOUSE WITH LIMITED WALLS HAS REVEALED SIGNIFICANT EVERYDAY CHALLENGES: Acoustic Issues: Sound travels easily, especially with vaulted ceilings and hard surfaces. The noise of a television, a kitchen blender or a remote work call can quickly become distracting.
The Design Dilemma: Testing bold design ideas is tricky. Without natural architectural breaks, it is difficult to know where to start and stop a beautiful wallcovering, a bold paint colour or a panelling detail without committing to the entire space. Limited Privacy: Finding a quiet nook for reading, working or unwinding is incredibly tough when every functional zone bleeds into the next.
Enter the Hybrid Home: Best of Both Worlds We aren’t completely closing up our homes again. Instead, residential design is moving toward a clever compromise: a hybrid balance that maintains the airy connectedness of an open plan while recapturing the intimacy and order of defined rooms.
Large Pocket Doors: These allow a space to feel wide open during a party or cosy and closed off for a movie night while improving acoustics. Architectural Delineation: Ceiling treatments, cased openings and arch details visually identify a room’s purpose without constructing a solid partition. A large twoway fireplace or a change in flooring height or material can also define space. Furniture, Millwork, etc.: Fixed architectural features like double-sided bookcases, wooden slats or laser-cut designs. Freestanding pieces like decorative privacy screens or a beautiful handmade textile hung strategically can all create intentional transitions in space.
The Power of Micro-Zoning For those not looking to renovate, microzoning offers a clever alternative. It is about being highly intentional and assigning a dedicated purpose to every corner. To start, determine which daily needs are currently unmet for your family. By creating targeted solutions for those gaps, your home will instantly feel calmer, more organized and more harmonious. Microzoning gives purpose to underutilized square footage and positively influences daily routines. It can resolve common frustrations by establishing distinct zones for remote work, reading, hobbies, children’s toys or intimate conversation. If you have just a six-by-six-foot space, you can easily create a functional vignette. Layer in a small area rug, a floor lamp, a piece of furniture (such as an antique desk or a small tea table), a comfortable chair and a piece of art. This simple setup can serve as a hidden work-from-home station in the corner of your living room by day, or a quiet bedroom retreat in the evening when the TV in the main living area gets noisy. Whether sparked by the necessity of remote work or a desire for cosiness and more personalized character, delineating space proves that a home functions best when its layout matches the true nuances of our daily lives. What is a Green Roof? Green roofs are artificial ecosystems that provide a nature-based solution to environmental challenges such as climate change and the urban heat island. Green roofs, also known as living roofs, vegetated roofs or eco-roofs, consist of plants established on top of buildings – from small sheds, garages or houses to major installations on commercial buildings (like the Mountain Equipment Company’s Vancouver head office and Toronto’s City Hall). A green roof system is
22 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6
an extension of the existing roof that includes, at a minimum, highquality waterproofing, a root-repellent system, a drainage system, filter cloth, a growing medium and plants. Green roofs are not new. They have been around since the Hanging Gardens of Babylon (600 BC) in what is now Iraq. Sod roof buildings were used in Norway by the Vikings around 600-1,000 CE and are still in use today.
Why a Green Roof? There are many, many benefits to having a green roof, and some of those benefits in the 21st century are the same as in ancient times. There are some big differences, too. GREEN ROOFS AID IN: The conservation of both cooling and heating energy The deposition of particulates and the mitigation of air pollution The control of runoff and water pollution The promotion of biodiversity They also provide aesthetic and health benefits. Green roofs benefit your home by enhancing energy efficiency. They serve as natural insulators, which lessens the need for heating and cooling systems, lowering energy costs. Studies have shown that buildings with green roofs can save up to 25 per cent on energy costs annually. Green roofs offer significant aesthetic and psychological benefits. They can transform bland, unused roof space into beautiful, green oases that enhance the visual appeal of buildings and urban landscapes. The presence of greenery is well known to have positive effects on mental health, healing, stress reduction and overall well-being. Stormwater management is an essential issue in urban areas, and green roofs offer an effective solution. They absorb and retain rainwater, reducing runoff and the burden on drainage systems. That is particularly beneficial in cities prone to flooding, where heavy rainfall can overwhelm infrastructure. Green roofs can retain up to 75 per cent of rainwater, gradually releasing it through evaporation and plant uptake. This makes them an environmentally friendly option for municipalities and homeowners alike. The vegetation on green roofs plays a significant role in improving air quality. Plants filter pollutants and capture airborne particles, which helps to purify the air. That is especially important in urban environments, where air pollution is a major concern. Also, green roofs mitigate the urban heat
island effect, where cities experience higher temperatures than surrounding areas due to human activities and infrastructure. Green roofs help lower temperatures and improve overall air quality by cooling the air through evapotranspiration. Green roofs can also promote biodiversity by providing habitats for various plant and animal species. By choosing various native plants, one can create an ecosystem that supports local wildlife. Birds, bees, butterflies and other pollinators are particularly attracted to green roofs, which can help boost their populations in urban areas. Creating such habitats benefits the environment and enhances the beauty and enjoyment of the space. Starting a roof garden requires a few key steps, including ensuring the structure beneath the green roof is sound and can support its weight. Installing waterproofing membranes prevents leaks, adds a root barrier to protect the roof and ensures proper drainage to avoid water buildup. Choosing the right plants is also important and will depend
on the depth of the soil media. Prairie species are tough and can withstand the weather on a green roof. Sedums are good choices too, as they thrive in our local climate and require minimal maintenance. In a world facing rising temperatures, increasing urbanization and more frequent extreme weather events, green roofs offer a practical and attractive solution that benefits both people and the environment. From their ancient origins to their modern applications, green roofs have proven their value by improving energy efficiency, managing stormwater, enhancing air quality, supporting biodiversity and creating beautiful green spaces in otherwise dull urban settings. Whether installed on a home, garage or commercial building, a well-designed green roof is an investment in sustainability and resilience. As communities continue to seek nature-based solutions to environmental challenges, green roofs demonstrate that even our rooftops can become thriving ecosystems that contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future. FAMILY LIFE
Early morning sunlight spills across open fields that stretch for miles. From their second-storey balcony, the homeowners take in the view while their children play nearby. The balcony wraps from the front to the back of the house, a peaceful retreat where the family enjoys the best of what their custom home has to offer. The home in LaSalle sits on a property chosen for its privacy and convenient access to local amenities. Continued on page 28 26 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6

home & builder Michael Habib
D
Designed and built by Michael Habib of HD Development Group, this family home reflects the homeowners’ vision for a space that balances thoughtful design with everyday functionality. From expansive outdoor living areas to a carefully considered layout, every detail was tailored to the family’s lifestyle. As co-owners of HD Development Group, Michael and his older brothers have built homes throughout Windsor and Essex County for more than 30 years. In 2025, the company was named Builder of the Year by the Windsor-Essex Home Builders’ Association. Michael learned the trade from his father, who instilled in him an emphasis on quality craftsmanship that continues to shape his approach today. Throughout the company’s growth, he has remained closely involved with each project. “My dad would tell us, ‘If you’re going to do it, do it right,’ ” he recalls. From framing to the finishing details, Michael is on site every day. “You can’t just leave it to the trades to build the house,” he says. “I’m involved at each stage, observing their work and holding them to a higher standard. We build each home like it’s our own.”
ABOVE: Warm wood tones and black accents add contrast to the white kitchen. A dining-height table with built-in seating is a cosy alternative to a large kitchen island. LEFT: This kitchen’s clever layout includes an abundance of storage and plenty of prep space.
28 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6
Michael works closely with clients, emphasizing craftsmanship, care and attention to detail during each build. For this home, he collaborated with residential designer JMD Design and Drafting to refine the layout through multiple revisions. The final design prioritizes functionality and comfort over unnecessary grandeur. “We could have built this house bigger,” Michael says of the 3,500 sq. ft. home. “There’s nearly half an acre of property here. But it wasn’t what the homeowners needed. Instead, they wanted a family-oriented space where everyone stays close together.” Continued on page 30
Appliance garages keep frequently used items within reach. When not in use, they are easily hidden away. ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6 | 29
home & builder
Described as a contemporary farmhouse, the home artfully blends contrasting materials and architectural elements to create a distinctive exterior. “There’s a mixture of two styles,” Michael says. “The James Hardie board stone and cedar corbels have a farmhouse appeal. But we also incorporated ACM panelling, glass railings and some flat roofs, which are more contemporary.” An offset front door allows for an extensive row of windows to take centre stage as a unique focal point. Inside, each space was designed to meet the demands of a young family’s daily routines. The kitchen, supplied by Mylen, is the heart of the home, flowing seamlessly into the living room and backyard patio. Appliance garages were requested by the homeowners to conceal everyday items and keep the countertops by Dark Granite clutter-free. A walk-in pantry and separate coffee bar provide storage while preserving a clean, streamlined aesthetic.
Rather than incorporating a traditional island, Michael designed an integrated dining-height table. A long run of cabinetry provides a generous work surface, while the built-in bench creates comfortable seating. By lowering the height of the central table, the design maintains clear sightlines into the adjacent living room, allowing parents to stay connected with their children while preparing meals. This thoughtful approach reflects Michael’s focus on creating functional, familyoriented spaces where everyday moments naturally come together. Continued on page 32 30 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6

Upstairs, the bedrooms are positioned close together, reinforcing the home’s focus on connection. The primary bedroom serves as a quiet retreat, complete with a cosy upholstered window seat and a handcrafted ash wood ceiling that brings warmth to the space. In the en suite, large-format tile from Palazzi Tile & Granite is carried up the walls to create a luxurious spa-like atmosphere. A sleek Europeaninspired curbless shower completes the minimalist design. The second-floor provides access to the expansive wraparound balcony that extends the family’s living space. Showcasing the surrounding landscape, it offers different places to relax as the sun moves throughout the day. Hidden beneath the porcelain tile from Buzon Canada is an innovative system made in Italy by Eterno Ivica. It is commonly found on commercial rooftop terraces and allows water to drain over a sloped structure below. Continued on page 34

HOW SPACE INFLUENCES MOOD, PRODUCTIVITY & CONNECTION
People rarely describe their homes in terms of square footage, cabinetry styles or paint colours. Instead, they talk about how their homes make them feel. They mention the kitchen that somehow makes Monday mornings less stressful, the reading chair they gravitate toward at the end of a long day or the dining room where conversations linger long after the plates have been cleared. Those responses aren’t accidental. That’s because our spaces influence our emotions, energy levels, habits and relationships in ways we don’t always recognize outright. The key to designing a home is how people will move through it. When circulation is awkward, it shows up in small but constant ways: a tight squeeze past an open dishwasher, a hallway that slows everyone down during busy mornings or a shared workspace that always seems to be in someone’s way. Over time, those moments add up. When movement feels natural, the house supports daily life instead of interrupting it. Some homeowners think they’ve outgrown their square footage, when what they’re really reacting to is a layout that no longer reflects how they live. Reworking the floor plan from the ground up, clarifying the separation between public and private areas and reorganizing how key rooms relate to one another will shift how a home functions on a day-to-day basis. The change isn’t necessarily about adding more space, but making better use of the space we already have. That idea carries through to how rooms visually relate to one another. Sightlines quietly guide how a home is experienced. A partial view into the next space, a piece of artwork aligned with an entry or a softly illuminated seating area at the end of a corridor improves a home’s orientation. These moments of visual connection make a home feel more legible and intuitive, encouraging movement without ever feeling forced. Continued on page 38

Design also influences how people spend time together. Open-concept living has dominated residential design for years, but removing walls doesn’t automatically create closeness. Some of the most successful gathering spaces include smaller zones that invite people in without demanding everyone’s attention at once. In one home, an underused formal living room became a library and sitting area connected to the kitchen through wide-cased openings. Deep lounge chairs, bookshelves and soft lighting transformed it into the room everyone migrated toward. The room found its purpose because it reflected how the family genuinely wanted to spend their time. Lighting is another key element that can completely transform how a home feels. Whenever possible, prioritize natural light by maintaining clear sightlines to windows and select window treatments that soften rather than block daylight. Artificial lighting deserves the same level of consideration. Many homes rely on recessed ceiling fixtures that provide brightness but little atmosphere. Layered lighting changes everything. Under-cabinet lighting supports food preparation, table lamps bring warmth to living spaces and bedside sconces create a more comfortable environment for reading and relaxation. Lighting is often the unseen element that shapes the emotional experience of a
space. It can influence mood, support wellbeing, enhance productivity and foster connection within our homes. Natural light brings energy and balance, while thoughtfully layered lighting introduces warmth, intimacy and sophistication as the day evolves. When carefully considered, lighting becomes far more than a functional necessity. It is a powerful design element that enhances how we live, feel and connect within our homes. Of course, texture, sound and colour all shape how a home feels. Spaces dominated by stone, glass and other hard surfaces can be beautiful, but they often amplify noise and feel less inviting. A home with soaring ceilings and extensive tile is easily warmed up with wool rugs, upholstered dining chairs and lined drapery to soften the acoustics enough to make family conversations noticeably easier. Colour is equally personal. While some people are energized by rich, saturated hues, others prefer quieter palettes with subtle contrast. Most successful spaces aren’t dictated by trends. They reflect the personalities and preferences of those who call the space home. Interior design shapes more than appearances. At its best, it creates experiences and an environment that people want to return to at the end of the day. OH

OUTDOOR Living
For James Gibb, outdoor furniture is more than a place to sit. “It’s about creating spaces where families gather, friends linger long after dinner and everyday moments become lasting memories,” he says. That simple philosophy became the foundation for Affinity Outdoor Living Products. What began as a vision to help homeowners create beautiful, functional outdoor spaces has grown into a proudly Canadian company known for durable, thoughtfully designed furniture that brings comfort and style outdoors. Affinity’s approach has always been collaborative, focusing on quality craftsmanship and products designed to become part of everyday life.
OUTDOOR LIVING TODAY As outdoor spaces continue to evolve into extensions of the home, homeowners are investing in coordinated environments that feel every bit as welcoming and stylish as their interiors. Affinity has responded with collections that go far beyond Adirondack chairs, offering dining sets, loungers, fire tables, planters and accessories that work together to create visually unified outdoor rooms.

CANADIAN THROUGH AND THROUGH Manufactured in Canada using recycled HDPE plastic, Affinity furniture is built specifically for our climate. Unlike traditional wood, it won’t rot, splinter or require constant maintenance, while its durable construction helps reduce waste by lasting for decades. For Affinity, sustainability isn’t simply a manufacturing decision – it’s part of creating products homeowners can enjoy season after season. 40 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6
LOOKING AHEAD
EVOLUTION While the company has expanded its collections and refined its manufacturing, its greatest success isn’t measured by growth alone. “One defining moment came when I realized that customers weren’t simply buying furniture – they were creating spaces where birthdays would be celebrated, grandchildren would play and evenings spent savouring the moment,” says James. Today, much of Affinity’s business comes through referrals and repeat customers, something the company considers the strongest measure of trust.
New additions to the dining and lounge collections are already in development as Affinity continues to expand its offerings. One piece of advice often surprises homeowners: “Don’t wait until spring,” says James. “Shopping in the fall or winter provides the greatest selection and allows furniture to be delivered before the outdoor season begins, so when the first warm days arrive, your backyard is ready and you can relax and enjoy your outdoor spaces.” OH

HALLOWEEN ENTERTAINING THAT MAKES GROWN-UPS FEEL LIKE KIDS AGAIN STORY NI C OL E H I LTON
Halloween hosting doesn’t always have to include miniature chocolate bars and candy corn. Done right, a playful snack board can add a spooky surprise to your table that’s perfect for parents while the kids are trick-or-treating, seasonal cocktail parties, ladies’ night with friends or even a festive family spread. The secret recipe is leaning into dramatic colours, unexpected textures, fun shapes and themed servingware that help support a spread as creepy as it is craveable. Here’s how you can create your own charBOOterie board, or charcutEERIE board, or whatever you want to call your masterpiece.
CANDYM: Primitives by Kathy – Skeleton Tray
STEP 1:
BUILD YOUR BASE Start by selecting a flat board or tray based on the size of your gathering. Wood brings warmth and an autumn feel, while slate or black serving pieces reinforce a spooky Halloween theme. Neutral-coloured boards provide the perfect backdrop for all the visual interest you’ll create with vibrant cheeses and savoury snacks. Halloween-shaped dishes featuring ghosts or bats add a touch of whimsy, and orange ramekins or small bowls add a seasonal pop of colour. STEP 2:
CHOOSE A MOODY COLOUR PALETTE Once you’ve settled on a serving board, decide on a theme to guide your ingredient choices and overall presentation. Go all in for Halloween with a traditional board using bold orange and black or a witchyinspired spread embracing mysterious purples and a twilight aesthetic. For a harvest look, incorporate warm earthy tones or create a kid-friendly board using items in monster green and vibrant purple. Once you’ve selected a palette, fill your board with ingredients that reflect it, such as blackberries, purple grapes, figs, orange cheddar, merlot-infused cheese, blood orange slices, dark chocolate bark and black olives.
STEP 3:
ADD CREEPY-CUTE ELEMENTS This is where the CharBOOterie board really comes to life, turning an ordinary spread into a festive feast! Use Halloween cookie cutters to transform simple ingredients into frightful shapes like pumpkins, bats, ghosts and witches’ hats – naan bread or sliced cheese works perfectly. Whip up some devilish devilled eggs by adding red pepper horns or wrap cocktail sausages in pastry to resemble mummies. Tap into your creativity by adding candy eyeballs to food items for personality. Let’s face it, making this type of board is one of the few times you’re encouraged to play with your food! 44 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6
Work from the centre outward when assembling your board. Place a wheel of brie in the middle, then use a cookie cutter to cut a themed shape on top, or remove the shape entirely and fill the space with red pepper jelly. Position dip bowls and larger items first, then arrange meats, cheeses and crackers around them. Fold meats into ribbons or rosettes to add texture. Fill any gaps with snacks like apple chips, baby carrots, candied pecans or gummy worms. Cluster ingredients generously so the board feels abundant, then add themed cocktail picks, cheese knives and serving spoons. Guests will definitely want to taste this appetizer with their eyes first.

Backing onto a picturesque ravine alive with wildlife, this threebedroom ranch-style bungalow is the home Gary and Joanne Smith have always imagined. “It’s incredibly peaceful and beautiful here,” Gary tells us. Surrounded by towering, mature trees and lush greenery, the house is a stone’s throw from Lake Erie. Continued on page 49

The couple first met in Grade 5 before life led them in different directions. They reconnected six years ago and recently married. Now retired, Gary and Joanne decided it was time to build a home that was practical yet big enough to accommodate family and friends. Their roots run deep in the local area. “Gary’s family spans seven generations in the town of Essex, and he is part of the fifth,” Joanne says. “I also grew up in Essex.” The property, located in Kingsville, sits on a former horse ranch once owned by the prominent Pettapiece family. “The developer still lives down the street,” explains Gary. “His dad planted these beautiful trees 50 years ago.” A surprising discovery makes this place even more meaningful. “We found a small historic cemetery adjacent to our property, where some of our ancestors are resting.” The Smiths knew exactly what they wanted in a home and turned to Philip Fernandes of Philip Fernandes Designs Inc., who specializes in custom home exteriors and interior layouts. “Philip was already familiar with the property and asked thoughtful questions about how we wanted to live in the space,” recalls Gary. Every detail of Philip’s design exceeded their expectations. “We didn’t make a single change to the plans.” Philip describes the home’s design as French country. “It has a timeless look and feel,” he says. “Joanne and Gary embraced this design direction and fully supported our material selections.” Continued on page 51

The site presented a number of challenges that required careful planning. “It was very tricky,” Philip explains. “We had to consider the ravine, setbacks due to water levels, sightlines, privacy and the garage requirements.” Because the property backs onto land protected by the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA), Philip worked with the agency to ensure compliance with regulations, including deeper footings. He included Gary and Joanne in a conference call with ERCA while he talked them through his plans. Once Philip’s designs were finalized, Randy Gray of Gray Development Group began construction. “Randy handled the project’s challenges well, and our communication was excellent throughout,” says Philip. This is the second home Randy has built for Joanne. “It was a really good experience, and the quality was outstanding,” she says. The couple curated the interior décor with a neutral palette that exudes a warm, timeless feel. The exterior stone facade lends the home a classic presence that is reflected in its elegant design. “We wanted a home that looks like it’s been here for 100 years,” says Gary. “Philip designed the house around the existing mature trees, preserving them wherever possible.” Martindale Windows & Doors Inc. supplied expansive windows that frame views of the property’s natural setting. The theme of bringing the outdoors in continues in the dining area, where a walkout opens onto the screened-in terrace. A towering Indiana stone fireplace, crafted by local mason Jake Quiring, is the focal point in the
space. The stone was supplied by Artistic Stone Carving Ltd., while Forest Glade Fireplaces provided the insert. “We can’t say enough about Jake; he did an amazing job,” says Gary. A cosy seating area with rattan furniture overlooks the thoughtfully designed backyard by George Kroeker Landscaping. The dining area flows naturally into the well-equipped chef’s kitchen. “I love to cook, so I wanted a lot of room and finishes that are easy to maintain,” says Joanne. High-end appliances are tucked neatly into Shakerstyle cabinetry by Frank Cremasco Fine Cabinetry, creating a refined, uncluttered aesthetic. The spacious island, countertops and backsplash are topped with easy-to-clean quartz by Dimanti Countertops. Layered lighting, including pot lights in the kitchen, dual pendants over the island and a sparkling chandelier in the dining area, adds warmth and functionality. The nearby pantry is close but not too close. “Philip convinced us to put the pantry near the mudroom. It really gives the kitchen a cleaner, sleeker look,” says Joanne. The coffered ceiling in the great room elevates the design, creating an open, airy feel. Windows lining the north wall showcase the landscape beyond. “No matter where we sit, we are looking at greenery,” says Joanne. The windows, fitted with motorized blinds from APW Custom Home Theatres, are part of an automated system that controls the home’s systems. “We can operate everything through our phones no matter where we are,” explains Gary. NAKED
The Times They Are A-Changin’ –BOB DYLAN
BIRDING
Bay-breasted Warbler
Most people start birding naked. But it’s not what you’re thinking. For whatever reason, someone came up with the term “naked birding” to describe birding without binoculars. It also includes birding without cameras, field guides, Merlin, eBird, spotting scopes or a phone loaded with bird apps and notifications set to bird alerts. In other words, without the full inventory of paraphernalia today’s birders don’t leave home without. 56 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6
You were likely birding naked the first time you noticed a bird. You weren’t intentionally looking for birds, but one day something caught your eye. You heard a song, noticed a movement, spotted a bird that happened to land nearby. You gave it a good once-over with your bare eyes. Perhaps there was something about this raw look that made you want to know what kind of bird you were looking at. It was your first time being a bare-naked birder.
NAKED FEEDER WATCH If the birding bug does bite or even nibbles at you gently, you can often continue to pursue birds nakedly by putting up a feeder. You don’t need binoculars to watch birds just outside your window. Binoculars are, in fact, sometimes a hindrance, as their narrow field of view minimizes the wider field of activity. While some species sit and sample the seeds, others beeline in from any direction and grab-and-go with a single seed. Sorting out the feeding styles helps you understand the species. Chickadees and nuthatches zip in and out; the jays, goldfinches and woodpeckers stay put for a bit. Soon, even without binoculars, you’ll be familiar with at least 10 species.

BACK WHEN
Apparently, there actually is a Naked Hiking Day, celebrated universally on the summer solstice, but this is not what we’re talking about here. Birding naked on your daily walk or weekly hike is a whole different thing. You’ll be au naturel in the birding sense – fully clothed – but toting no more than your water bottle. If your walk is on a trail, you’ll enjoy a range of bird watching and hearing along the way. You’ll be surrounded by songs from birds perched in trees, all within close enough range that you can usually identify them with your naked eye or tuned-in ears. I still remember finding, without binoculars, my very first, very beautiful Bay-breasted Warbler on a walk. It was a personal best for me as a serious newbie birder!
Birding back in the day didn’t look the same as it does today. Then, birders sallied forth with gear that amounted to nothing more than binoculars and a field guide. They were partially-naked birders! A bird was identified by flipping through your Peterson guide and comparing it with other birds on the page. Birdsong was learned from a vinyl LP record album; rare bird alerts were a phone pyramid – the finder phoned two people, who phoned two people, etc. (am I really that old). Province-wide bird news came from a weekly column in The Globe and Mail. To hear birdsong better, you cupped your hands around your ears. No one carried a long-lensed camera.
NAKED DRIVING
But things have changed. The LP record progressed to a tape, then a CD and now a variety of apps on your phone. Provincially, rare bird alerts were gleaned from the always-outdated, Ontario-wide hotline and an email listserv. Alerts now come from any number of sources: real-time WhatsApp, Signal, Messenger, Discord groups and eBird postings, each with its own urgent notification sound on your ever-present cell phone. The bird ID tools, tech and aids at your disposal go way beyond the seminaked birding of not that long ago. The learning curve was much different, too. Birds could not be ID’ed via multiple pictures fired off in the field and later pulled up on your computer screen for a slow and studied identification. You couldn’t ask for “ID please” on Facebook (and receive random, sometimes ridiculous suggestions by the way). Birds heard in the field were not recorded and instantly identified by Merlin.
AND NOW
PHOTO: LUCIE DESJARDIN
PHOTO: LYNNE RICHARDSON
Some of your best naked birding can be from your car while on a country drive, a road trip, driving to work or simply running errands. With binoculars left at home or tucked away in the back seat, and eyes (mostly) on the road, it’s still easy enough to catch good glimpses of birds as you roll along. On rural drives, roadside telephone poles are great for perching Red-tailed Hawks, or in winter, a most coveted Snowy Owl (don’t park below the pole). Flocks of various species congregate on the telephone wires. Bluebirds, sparrows and meadowlarks perch on fenceposts. Roll down your window and hear a Bobolink’s burbling medley from the pasture fields. And if you dare to quickly put your eyes to the skies, you’ll likely spot a teetering Turkey Vulture or a soaring hawk up in the blue.

NAKED HIKING
PROS AND CONS Perhaps back then, the partially-naked birders took more time to study the bird, its habitat, activity and field marks. Perhaps they listened more intently to the song to commit it and the sighting to memory for later identification back home, when tapes and reference books were consulted. Or does today’s instant ID gratification of a bird’s species and song build your birding knowledge and skills faster and more accurately? For one, these techy tools certainly open the field of birding to the wider population, given the amazing popularity of Merlin and other birding apps. And they make the introduction to the joys of birding simple and accessible. But birding naked heightens the acuity of your most essential birding skills – your eyes and ears. With no binoculars, camera, Merlin or identification apps, you simply notice a bird, focus on what it looks like and what it’s doing, what habitat it’s hanging in and how small, medium or large it is. This lays a solid foundation for birding observation skills. A quick and easy ID pop-up from Merlin is only a start; continued study through observation and listening turns you into a real birder. Really, nothing can replace the experienced eye or ear. And just like the days of naked birding, going birding with an experienced birder is still one of the best ways to learn more. Regardless of whether you’re birding naked or fully teched out, whatever your style of birding, as a current popular meme says: “Don’t ever let anyone talk you out of that 30-minute birding walk. Those two hours could be the best five hours of your day!” But please, keep your clothes on. OH ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6 | 57

From HARVEST to HALLOWEEN S T ORY N I CO L E H I LT O N
SEASONAL TIPS FOR STYLING YOUR FRONT PORCH
Celebrate fall from the moment guests arrive with a front porch that’s as inviting as it is seasonal. Refresh your space by swapping summer wreaths and floral arrangements for autumn-inspired accents that create a standout harvest display. Using the season’s offerings from local farmers’ markets and garden centres, you can mix pumpkins and gourds with complementary décor for maximum curb appeal. Put on your flannel shirt, grab a pumpkin spice latte and an apple fritter and let’s get started!
PICK THE PERFECT PUMPKINS When planning your display, consider the full footprint of your porch from the ground up to your front door, including steps and railings. Treat each step as a natural layer; placing pumpkins at various heights will instantly add visual impact and create a fuller look. A well-balanced display starts with variety. Look for unique heirloom or hybrid pumpkins like Cinderella (vibrant with a classic shape like Cinderella’s carriage), Lumina (bright white and smooth, often referred to as having a ghostly appearance), Porcelain Doll (pretty pale pink colouring) or Blue Doll (grey-blue or teal-blue hue with a flattened ornamental shape). Add a few jack-o’-lantern pumpkins into the mix, since they are truly the original pumpkin style that will take you from harvest to Halloween. 58 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6
MUMS THE WORD No fall porch is complete without hardy seasonal blooms. Chrysanthemums are classic for a reason, offering rich colour and staying power, while ornamental cabbage and kale add texture that can last well into the first frost, even carrying your display into the holiday season. Choose planters that work well with your home’s style, such as baskets, terracotta urns or autumn-themed pots, to anchor your arrangement. When grouping pumpkins, the rule of odd numbers still applies, but think of it in layers: a planter can act as one element in a grouping of three or five. For example, use one planter with two pumpkins. Finish off your fall foliage by hanging a grapevine wreath with magnolia leaves, eucalyptus or olive branches on your door.
Arrange your pumpkins in odd numbers – groupings of three, five or seven tend to feel more naturally aligned with the rules of thumb for home decorating. Start with your largest pumpkins as anchors, then layer small and medium ones around them, allowing some to overlap or tip on their side for a full look. Loose groups rather than rows will guide the eye toward the front door. Fill any extra gaps with interesting gourds.

DÉCOR & MORE Once your foundation is set, it’s the finishing touches that will bring your front porch to life. Start with a natural coir doormat to ground the space (go oversize for both aesthetics and function). Add faux-flame lanterns and a cast-iron or wooden welcome sign to set the tone. For comfort and texture, style outdoor seating with cosy throw pillows and blankets to extend your outdoor living time before the good weather fades away. Mixing materials like knits, plaids and weathered wood helps create that relaxed, curated fall feel. This is also where you can have a little fun as October unfolds. Subtle spooky décor – think carved-style skulls, perched crows, black lanterns and hanging bats – can be introduced gradually to transition your porch into haunting season. The result is a space that feels welcoming by day and just the right amount of fright at night! OH ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6 | 59

LAKESHORE LANDSCAPING Outdoor living has become an extension of the home, and backyard spaces are being designed with the same care and attention as interiors. For more than 30 years, Lakeshore Landscaping has helped homeowners make the most of every square foot. Offering landscape design and hardscaping, this award-winning company brings backyards to life, making them as beautiful and inviting as rooms inside the home.
BACKYARD REFRESH Not every project begins with a blank slate. Lakeshore Landscaping often transforms existing yards into outdoor retreats. This project originally featured dated materials and an impractical layout. By refreshing the pool and incorporating new hardscaping, the team reimagined the space to suit the homeowners’ lifestyle. Dedicated areas for dining, cooking and lounging create a welcoming environment for everyday living and easy entertaining.
DESIGNED WITH PURPOSE Lakeshore Landscaping approaches every outdoor area with the same attention to detail that a designer brings to interior spaces. Every square inch is carefully planned, with traffic flow, plumbing, draining and electrical all considered before construction begins. Carefully selected materials and landscaping complete each custom design, resulting in outdoor spaces that are as functional as they are beautiful. OH

WANTS & NEEDS ST O RY ANDREW HI ND
Luxury, comfort and style are words that mean different things to different people. When asked to point out a favourite feature in their home, or something they look for in a potential new home, what people rave about can vary greatly. Sometimes, what one craves can change with the speed of a TikTok reel – and, as it turns out, for good reason. “Social media is impacting what people want, opening their eyes to things that can be done and what they can have,” explains Scott Young, owner of Scot-Build Developments Inc. “It can lead and influence trends.” Nonetheless, it is possible – even if only in broad strokes – to paint a picture of what homebuyers in Ontario are looking for, at least circa 2026. “When buying or building a home, today’s buyers are increasingly looking for features that combine comfort, functionality and long-term value,” explains Ida Sproule, a sales representative at Remo Valente Real Estate. “Open-concept living areas remain highly desirable, particularly when paired with modern kitchens featuring large islands, walk-in pantries and quality finishes. Buyers also place high value on spacious primary bedrooms with en suite bathrooms and walkin closets, as well as convenient features such as main-floor laundry, mudrooms and ample storage throughout the home.” According to Ida, the features people find desirable have changed significantly in recent years. 68 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6
“Over the last four to five years, homebuyer preferences have evolved considerably, with greater emphasis placed on functionality, flexibility and affordability,” she explains. “Dedicated home office space has become one of the most sought-after features as more people work remotely or in hybrid arrangements.” As one might expect, what one values in a home varies across buyer segments. Homeowners with families, for example, place great value on access to good schooling and tend to compromise on amenities and other desirables to achieve that end. “Willingness to compromise decreases as the wealth increases,” offers Steve Simon, team leader at Lifestyles North. “This group values quiet, private outdoor space, community, gathering/entertaining spaces, suitable décor, garage functionality, kitchen, primary suite and closets. The basement is often tricked out with large TVs, billiards, air hockey and other games. They want to create a destination so the kids, and more importantly, grandkids come to visit often.” Energy-efficient construction, including high-performance windows, insulation, smart thermostats and efficient heating and cooling systems, is increasingly important as homeowners seek to reduce utility costs. Additionally, because of the cost of housing, buyers are also placing a premium on finished basements and flexible living spaces that can accommodate multi-generational families or potential rental income. “Elements that provide added value are popular,” asserts Scott. “People are seeing the value of metal roofing rather than shingles because of longevity – you are really lucky to get 25 years from shingles, despite what manufacturers say – and aluminum windows rather than vinyl because of durability and long-term value.”
“People know that exteriors add value,” Scott adds. “We are seeing a lot of money being spent on outside appearances – landscaping and the concept of bringing the inside out.” This includes feature walls, or even the entire garage, clad in a different material to provide visual interest, and glass walls surrounding pools and fire pits. Outdoor living spaces include covered patios and decks for entertainment and relaxation, as well as gardens to beautify the property. Realtor Steve has noticed some distinct trends among higher-income earners. “A few things that have risen in prominence within the more premium segment over the past several years include dog washes, tricked out garages/man caves, hydronic heated floors on the lower level and/or throughout.” Having a custom home built allows one to truly optimize it to one’s tastes. Take, for instance, Amanda Lambert, who, with her husband, is in the middle of building a new house. It’s her fifth build, and with each one she focuses on features that ideally suit her taste and lifestyle. “I have to have walk-in closets, vaulted ceilings with wooden beams and a bathroom in each bedroom for convenience,” she explains. “My focus, though, is a large fireplace and big windows,” Amanda continues. “Our homes are always open concept, so the fireplace – with an amazing wood mantel – stands out as a focal point. Large windows are important to me to let in lots of light for ourselves and my plants, and to offer views because everywhere we move is so beautiful.” Ontario is a mosaic of people. As one would expect, tastes differ greatly based on personal taste, income, family status and needs. The one commonality is that everyone wants their house to feel like a home. It’s that elusive, comforting sensation that guides us when buying, building or renovating a residence. OH

FALL EATING
STO RY B A I L E Y F R A NKLY N
Fall is arguably one of the most delicious seasons, and as we move into cooler months, we start to crave richer, deeper flavours and different cooking methods than we do during warmer seasons. In order to take full advantage of seasonal eating during fall, you must know what’s in season, as well as the ideal cooking methods for this time of year.
WHAT’S IN SEASON FROM OCTOBER TO DECEMBER IN ONTARIO: Fruits: cranberries, pears, plums Vegetables: artichokes, beans, beets, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, swiss chard, fennel, garlic, parsnips, potatoes, pumpkins, spinach, squash, sweet potatoes, turnips Produce available year-round: apples, greenhouse strawberries, mushrooms, carrots, greenhouse lettuce, greenhouse peppers, greenhouse tomatoes, greenhouse cucumbers 70 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6
WHAT’S AT PEAK NUTRITION? During the fall, recently harvested produce that has only travelled a short distance is at its peak nutritional value. Therefore, look for fruits and vegetables that are locally grown in Ontario, greenhouse-grown and/or are in season. Cucumbers, tomatoes and mushrooms, once considered summer-only staples, are now available year-round thanks to advances in greenhouse growing. If something has travelled a long distance to get to your grocery store, chances are it was harvested days or even weeks ago, and its nutritional value has been declining since then. Look for produce that’s local to Ontario or buy directly from the growers at farmers’ markets. Now that we know what’s in season, we can discuss the best cooking methods for these foods. During fall and winter, we naturally move away from lighter, brighter ingredients and cooking methods, embracing warmer flavours and slower preparations. Roasting: an easy and flavourful way to cook almost any seasonal vegetable. Roasting adds flavour by browning and caramelizing the produce’s natural sugars and creates a crispy texture. At its most basic, roasting vegetables requires oil, salt, pepper and an oven set to a higher temperature (usually around 400°F). However, you can get as creative as you like with flavours by trying different herbs and spices. Slow cooking: a great way to cook those hearty, seasonal root vegetables and tougher cuts of meat. It’s a cooking method that slowly cooks food over a longer period. It includes methods like braising and stewing, as well as recipes like pot roasts. Ideal for fall and winter when you want something warm and flavourful and have the time (and desire) to get something on the stove in the morning and let it simmer all day. Grilling: cooking on the barbecue is great any time of year. It’s a simple way to highlight the natural flavours of seasonal vegetables (or fruits) and meats without adding too many other ingredients. Similar to roasting, grilling adds depth of flavour through browning and caramelization, which is why you don’t need to do much to have your grilled food taste good. To prevent vegetables from falling through the grates, try skewering them. This is perfect for mushrooms, artichokes and greenhouse peppers.
