It’s Time to Go Back to School

I

t is hard to believe that the summer is already coming to an end. It’s time to review the school supplies list, pick out that lucky lunch box, and finish the summer reading assignments. August 21st is the first day of school for most kids in the area. Preparing for school has certainly gotten more complex over the past 20 years. We have gone from wrapping textbooks in brown paper bags to downloading software onto smartphones, iPads and Chromebooks. After-school programs have exploded from sports and music to a variety of different opportunities from computer classes to dual language programs. Parents have more choices as well: neighborhood school, charter school, private school or virtual school. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City Weston is here to help! Check out our Back to School Guide in this issue. It contains useful information on the best preschools, private schools and educational programs in the local area, in addition to almost every after-school activity you can think of, from arts to the YMCA. The material is curated to provide a useful guide to help you get ready for the new school year. Please enjoy these last few weeks of summer. School will start before you know it. Sincerely,

City Budget Receives National Recognition COMMUNITY NEWS

BY STACEY BOMSER

F

or the 15th consecutive year, the City of Weston has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). This prestigious award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting. “This award represents a significant achievement by our budget and finance staff,” states City Manager John Flint of the designation. “Our congratulations to Budget Director Bryan Cahen and recently retired Assistant City Manager/CFO David Keller for their leadership in the City’s budgeting process and their commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.” In order to achieve the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, the submit-

ting entity must publish a budget document that satisfies nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. The guidelines assess how well the budget serves as: a Policy Document; a Financial Plan; an Operations Guide; and a Communications Device. Publication of an award-winning document reflects the commitment of the government body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental accounting. Mr. Cahen and Mr. Keller worked diligently with City of Weston department heads to prepare the annual budget for the Fiscal Year beginning October 1, 2016, pursuant to the GFOA guidelines. The finance staff is currently working on the budget plan for Fiscal Year 2018. Public hearings on the proposed budget will be held in September, and the budget will go into effect on October 1st. According to Mayor Stermer, the annual budget, with its implications on the City’s millage rate and the services provided, is one that touches every resident and business owner personally and financially, so the City of Weston takes its budget process very seriously. The GFOA is a non-profit professional association serving over 19,000 government finance professionals throughout North America. The GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting. Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 8/31/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Power Up at Solar Charging Stations in Weston Parks SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS

BY STACEY BOMSER

A

s part of its ongoing effort to improve the visitor experience in Weston parks, the City’s Department of Parks and Recreation has added solar charging stations in the city’s three most heavily utilized parks. Now, park-goers can quickly and easily charge their cell phones, tablets and small electronic devices. “Like many people, I’ve been many places with a low battery, wishing I had the ability to get it charged up, and parks typically do not have a lot of power outlets,” states Parks Director Don Decker, in explaining why the City of Weston opted to install the solar charging stations at Weston Regional Park, Tequesta Trace Park and Vista Park. Within the first few weeks after installation, Decker said his department had already noticed people using the solar charging stations. “When we get to our busy fall season, we will monitor their use. If there is a demand, we will consider adding more.” The solar charging stations, by Sun Charges Systems, Inc., are equipped with ten rapid-charge USB ports and a 30-inch table on which to place your items while they are being charged; two of the ports

are located under the table to be wheelchair accessible. “The equipment features ‘intelligent device recognition’ and includes a fourstage battery that regulates low-voltage and power loads,” explains Decker. “They are compatible with any device with a battery that is charged by a USB cable. Users need to provide their own USB cable.” Decker says an added benefit of the solar charging stations is that they are available in event of an emergency. “For example, after a hurricane if we are without power for an extended period of time, residents might be able to go to one of the parks to charge up their phone.” The solar charging stations installed in Weston need only one to three hours of sunshine each day to be fully charged. Unlike many public places, Weston does not charge for the use of its rapid chargers. The solar charging stations are conveniently located by the main playground next to the Weston Community Center in Weston Regional Park, near the football concession stand at Tequesta Trace Park, and near the playground in Vista Park. As an added benefit to parkgoers, Weston Regional Park offers free Wi-Fi throughout the 102-acre park.

Proclamation Declares Weston a Purple Heart City COMMUNITY NEWS

BY STACEY BOMSER

W

eston is the latest Broward County city to become a Purple Heart City. The City Commission recently issued the proclamation to Lewis Colon, of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. It is his goal to enlist all 31 municipalities in honoring the service and sacrifice of our nation’s men and women of the armed services wounded or killed by the enemy, while protecting the freedoms our country enjoys. In issuing the proclamation, Mayor Stermer recognized the former Weston residents who made the ultimate sacrifice in giving their lives in the cause of freedom as well as the numerous combatwounded veterans who currently live in Weston and deserve to be honored. The Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration still in present use. Created by General George Washington in 1782 as the “Badge of Military Merit,” the Purple Heart was the first American Service Award available to the common soldier. Over the years, the criteria for which it was

awarded has changed. Today, the Purple Heart is awarded to any member of the United States Armed Services wounded or killed in combat with a declared enemy of the U.S., including certain kinds of domestic terrorist activities. The current medal, which was developed by General Douglas MacArthur in 1932, features a purple heart bordered in gold with a bust of General Washington in the center and the Washington coat of arms at the top. According to the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the heritage the medal represents is sacred to those who understand the price paid to wear it. The Military Order of the Purple Heart was chartered by an act of Congress in 1958. Its mission is to foster an environment of goodwill among the combat-wounded veteran members and their families. One of the ways it is doing this is by enlisting municipalities to become a Purple Heart City. In recognition of becoming a Purple Heart City, George Caffrey, Chair of the Veterans Coalition of the Elks Lodge, presented the City of Weston with a Purple Heart flag. During the City Commission meeting it was held by Weston veterans including Commissioner Margaret Brown and members of the audience.

Do Your Part To Prevent Street Flooding In Your Neighborhood COMMUNITY NEWS

BY STACEY BOMSER

E

arly June’s deluge dumped eleven inches of rain on Weston in less than 48 hours, leaving streets submerged and lake levels rising throughout the city. Hopefully that experience served as a reminder that we need to be proactive to prevent flooding in Weston neighborhoods. As a master-planned community, Weston was designed with an intricate drainage system to move water away from streets and properties to prevent flooding. Swales are a commonly used stormwater management tool. They slow down the flow of stormwater and allow runoff to pool Photos courtesy City of Weston. temporarily until it can drain into the catch basin or evaporate. Swales also act as an important filtration device. Stormwater percolates through the swale into the groundwater aquifer, which is the primary source of drinking water in South Florida. Weston’s lakes and canals were designed to hold and move stormwater, in addition to providing a picturesque landscape. Despite the careful planning, large amounts of rain in a short period time, like we saw in June, can overwhelm the system. Localized flooding, especially in swales and low-lying roadways, is most likely to occur when the catch basin (storm drain) is clogged. The catch basin is designed to trap debris, such as leaves, palm fronds, and litter, so that it does not enter the drainage pipes. Unobstructed water flow through these drains, especially during heavy rain, is essential to prevent flooding. Weston residents should know the location of the nearest catch basin to their home and check it frequently to make sure it’s free of debris, especially after it rains. An unobstructed catch basin will allow stormwater to drain faster, reducing the chance of flooding. The City of Weston produced a video for its YouTube channel explaining exactly what steps residents should take to help keep storm drains clear in their neighborhoods. You can watch “Prevent Flooding on Your Street” at

www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBTX86wrM3Y. It’s important to note that the City of Weston does not maintain catch basins in Homeowner Association neighborhoods. If the catch basin on your street is clogged, please contact your HOA. Residents may also notice elevated lake levels after a heavy rain. This is normal, as the lakes were designed to receive rainwater runoff. The South Florida Water Management District maintains an intricate system of stormwater pumping stations to move water throughout the distribution system. During heavy rains, the City of Weston Public Works Department operates pumps at the maximum allowable levels. There is no need to be concerned by elevated lake levels. They will gradually return to normal as the rain subsides and the water moves through the system. In the event of localized flooding or other public safety concerns, the City of Weston uses its @WestonFLAlert Twitter account to relay notifications of an urgent nature or that will impact persons, property or travel. City officials recommend residents follow @WestonFLAlert, and set the audible alert feature, as well as subscribe to the CodeRED emergency notification system.

City on the Forefront in Fight Against Mosquitoes BY STACEY BOMSER

S

ummer is rainy season in south Florida and that means an increased number of mosquitoes. Aside from the diseases they carry, such as Zika virus, mosquitoes are a nuisance. That’s why Weston’s Department of Public Works is placing larvicide throughout the city, to complement Broward County’s efforts to eradicate mosquitoes. Public Works crews recently placed mosquito larvicide briquets into all 1,600 catch basins located throughout Weston. Catch basins are the grated storm drain structures along the sides of roadways into which rain water runs. These mosquito larvicide briquets are specially-designed to kill mosquitoes in areas that hold water. The extended time-release product lasts up to six months. It has been proven effective in controlling larvae of mosquitoes which may carry Zika, Dengue, and Chikungunya.

The use of this larvicide by the City of Weston is in addition to the aggressive mosquito spraying efforts by Broward County. The Mosquito Control Division performs preventive truck larvicide spraying in areas with reported concentrations of mosquitoes, such as Weston. The county uses an organic, biodegradable bacterial mosquito larvicide which is not harmful to humans, pets, bees, aquatic habitats or environmentally sensitive areas. In addition, the County Biologist regularly traps mosquitoes, separating them by species to detect any potential viruses. His findings help determine what chemical application Broward County will use and what type of spraying is required, either aerial or ground. Mosquitoes breed by laying eggs in water and near standing water. Mosquitoes can breed and multiply in as little as one teaspoon or bottle cap of water standing for more than one week. Therefore, Weston residents are being asked to do their part to eliminate standing water. At least once a week, empty, turn over or cover anything in your yard that could hold water. This includes buckets, children’s toys, pools and pool covers, birdbaths, trash and recycling containers, and roof gutters. In addition, keep flower pots and saucers free of standing water. Some plants, such as bromeliads, hold water in their leaves, so flush out water-holding plants with your hose at least once a week. Keep mosquitoes out of your home by keeping windows and doors closed and repairing holes in screens. Weston residents can further protect themselves and their family members from mosquito bites by using an EPA-registered insect repellent containing at least 20% DEET or another recommended active ingredient such as Picaridin or IR3535. Wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants is also effective. However, mosquitoes can bite through clothing so consider buying clothes treated with permethrin or other EPA-registered insecticides for extra protection. If you notice excessive mosquitoes in your neighborhood, you can request Broward County Mosquito Control spray the area by calling 954-765-4062 or submitting an online request form at http://www.broward.org/Streets/Mosquito/Pages/ MosquitoSprayRequest.aspx.

he City of Weston contracts the Broward Sheriff’s Office to safeguard our city by providing police and fire rescue services. Weston residents, both adults and teens, can complement these services through several volunteer programs. The Citizen Observer Patrol (C.O.P.) is a volunteer program sponsored by the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) that uses a simple approach to safeguarding neighborhoods through residents’ involvement. COP volunteers are the eyes and ears of the community, assisting and enhancing BSO’s policing efforts. They help BSO fight crime by patrolling the community, looking out for suspicious activity or potential hazards, and offering assistance to local residents. In addition to patrol activities, typical assignments include performing checks on unoccupied residences (at the owner’s request), checking on elderly or homebound residents (as requested), and reporting potential problems and neighborhood hazards to BSO. COP volunteers wear uniforms and drive specially marked vehicles, adding to the crime-fighting presence in the community. Members of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Countywide Operations professionally train all volunteers. Weston Welcomes Student Participation in Local Government COMMUNITY NEWS

BY STACEY BOMSER

W

ith the start of a new school year, the City of Weston is getting ready to begin another season of its “I Led the Pledge” program. This is the 19th year selected students from Weston schools will be invited to lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of a Weston City Commission Meeting. Photos courtesy City of Weston. “Engaging students in local government and civic education has become a longstanding belief for the City of Weston,” states Director of Communications Denise BarrettMiller. “Elementary students are invited to lead the Pledge and schools are also welcome to hold their Student Council induction ceremonies in our City Commission chamber. The Mayor has also sworn in many student government representatives.” Every school in Weston, pubic, private, charter and parochial, is invited to participate in the “I Led the Pledge” program. Barrett-Miller says last year nine elementary schools participated. She says it’s up to each school to select the students. “We have had Student Council members, Safety Patrol officers, and even an entire fourth grade gifted class who sang the Preamble to the Constitution dressed in period costumes.”

In addition to exposing students to local government, the “I Led the Pledge” program allows the City of Weston to recognize its outstanding schools and provide a way for students to receive public recognition. Each student participant is asked their name, grade and why they are there. Family and friends can view the ceremony on WTV, Weston’s government access television station. “The City Commission and staff, as well as audience members, get such pleasure from seeing the students and learning a little about them,” shares Barrett-Miller. “It is just downright heartwarming.” For participating in the program, students receive a special “I Led the Pledge” t-shirt and a desk flag set containing an American flag and City of Weston flag. The “I Led the Pledge” program is not the only way Weston welcomes student participation in local government. According to Barrett-Miller, “Since 2002, the City has offered the Weston University program each year for select high school students to provide a comprehensive look into state and local government. It truly benefits the community as a whole to involve students at an early age.”

s summer comes to a close, back-to-school season will be in full effect. Our streets will become more congested, and our sidewalks will become more crowded as our children walk, bike, or are bussed to school. For some teenagers, this season is also the first time they will get behind the wheel of their cars and commute to school on their own. Teen crashes spike in September of each year as a result, according to the National Safety Council. As we prepare to begin another school year, it is important that our children – and the motorists around them – take proper safety precautions so the school year can be both rewarding and enjoyable for all.

AUGUST 2017 | OUR CITY WESTON

Parents should plan a walking route to the bus stop choosing the most direct way, preferably sidewalks, with the fewest street crossings. If there is no sidewalk, walk as far as possible to the left side of the road, facing oncoming traffic. Plan on arriving at the bus stop about five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Children should wait in a safe place away from the road. Children should not play or run while at the bus stop. When the bus approaches, stand at least three giant steps (about six feet) away from the curb and line up away from the street. Be sure that the bus driver can see your child and your child can see the bus driver. If your child leaves something on the bus, he or she should never return to the bus to retrieve it. The bus driver may not see your child and may begin driving away. If your child drops something near the bus, tell the bus driver before your child attempts to pick it up so the driver knows where the child is.

Walking to School

Plan a route that is safe and includes crossing guards at every intersection, if possible. Identify other children in the neighborhood with whom your child can walk to school. Small children tend to be more impulsive and less cautious around traffic. Carefully consider whether or not your child is ready to walk to school without adult supervision. Walk with your children for the first week or until you are sure they know the route and can do it safely. Children should never run out into the streets or cross in between parked cars. Tell your children to stay away from parks, fields and other places where there aren’t many people around. Teach your child never to talk to strangers or accept rides or gifts from strangers and to run for help if approached by a stranger.

For Other Motorists

Drivers should be aware that children are out walking or biking to school and slow down, especially in residential areas and school zones. During drop off and pick up times, Weston’s schools zones are extremely congested with automobiles. Be prepared for the unexpected as cars pull out into traffic. Motorists should also know what the yellow and red bus signals mean. Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is getting ready to stop and motorists should slow down and be prepared to stop. Red flashing lights and an extended stop sign indicate the bus is stopped and children are getting on or off. Drivers in both directions must stop their vehicles and wait until the lights go off, the stop sign is back in place and the bus is moving before they can start driving again. Investing a few moments to review this information with your children can help them avoid the potential dangers present between your home and their school, and may save their lives. I hope you and your children have a safe and wonderful start to this new school year. For more information, please contact Weston Fire Chief Bruce Angier at 954-389-2015 or at bruce_angier@sheriff.org.

Valedictorian Learns Valuable Lesson After Founding Fundraiser BY STACEY BOMSER

K

arl Ackermann was valedictorian of The Sagemont School Class of 2017, but his most valuable lesson was not learned in the classroom. Rather, it took place on the soccer field. As founder of Athletes Against Alzheimer’s, Inc., Karl helped raise money and awareness to help fight this devastating disease. His involvement with this charity earned him a second-place award in the Holocaust Documentation & Education Center’s “A Simple Act of Kindness” essay contest. Although not personally touched by Alzheimer’s disease, Karl says he has seen first-hand how this form of dementia affects families; his best friend’s grandfather suffers from Alzheimer’s. “I was more than thankful for the good fortune my family had, but the severity and frequency this disease has developed within my immediate community appalled me and prompted me to act.” Karl Ackermann and Bruno Saade founded Athletes Against Alzheimer’s With his friend, Bruno Saade, Karl to raise money and awareness. founded Athletes Against Alzheimer’s, Inc., to increase awareness about this neurological disease which affects more than 5.4 million people in the United States, as well as raise funds for increased research to discover a cure. Both boys were members of the FUTSOC soccer club and through the club and its charitable arm, FUTSOC Cares, solicited donations and enlightened players about Alzheimer’s and why it is important to fight this disease. They collected more than $2,200, which they donated to Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Department of Neurology at The Pauline Braathen Neurological Center. “The support we gathered was phenomenal, knowing that we were able to get

peers from our school to help out in a cause that seems to be overshadowed by many others,” wrote Karl in his essay. “I will not limit myself to what I’ve achieved thus far, even given the money already raised for Alzheimer’s. I will continue to inform the public and create awareness for a cause that was woefully underrepresented, especially in my community.” That sentiment perfectly embodies the goal of the “A Simple Act of Kindness” contest. It challenges students to share how they are making a difference at home, at school, or in the community. In the essay, contestants had to explain what these simple acts of kindness mean to them and how they have affected change for the better. Although he has now graduated, Karl plans to continue raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s disease. This fall, he will be attend the New York University Stern School of Business, where he intends to study finance with hopes of one day working in investment banking. Karl says he also plans to continue playing soccer at NYU on a club team. Athletes Against Alzheimer’s is just one of many charitable causes Karl supported while a student at Sagemont. As Vice President of Rho Kappa, the social studSagemont Valedictorian Karl Ackermann ies honor society, he helped organize the school’s Operation Care Package drive, in which students collected toothbrushes, soap and other hygiene items for American troops. As part of National Honor Society, Karl participated in programs to support ChildNet, Broward Outreach, and UNICEF.

T

he International Dance Academy (IDA), Florida’s proven premier Ballet School, is now celebrating its 18th year. It is the most prestigious educational dance center in the area. In addition to the directors, who are active teachers and choreographers, IDA boasts an exceptionally trained international faculty. IDA is simply the best, taking the dancer from class to professional stage with excellent results. Its graduates are accepted into prestigious college dance programs, with many students receiving substantial scholarships. IDA is the only school in South Florida to offer the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) instruction and certification. RAD is the most highly-regarded international educational training and examining organization in the world, under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Once again, IDA obtained excellent results this year with the majority of its dancers receiving Distinction.

The diplomas they received are respected and recognized worldwide and are an impressive addition to college applications. At IDA, children are highly motivated, learn to have confidence in themselves, and are educated in technique, mostly in the French language. They are exposed to magnificent music by the masters and experience the valuable lessons and excitement of the stage and backstage. IDA is proud to produce dancers who are contracted to professional ballet companies immediately after graduation. On the strength of their dance ability, other graduating students enter prestigious colleges and universities such as Notre Dame, Princeton, Yale, and Penn State, to mention just a few. It is an accepted fact that the discipline and dedication of a ballet student sets them apart academically. The International Ballet Company, a non-profit youth organization affiliated with IDA, provides its dancers, tiny tots to pre-professional, the opportunity to take the pure classical ballet technique which is emphasized in class to the professional stage. Shows are SPECTACULAR with stunning costumes, magical special effects, wonderful music, and exciting and interesting original choreography. Dancers are introduced to the professional stage with two full-length ballets each year: The Nutcracker in December at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts and a spring show such as Sleeping Beauty, Save our Oceans or Little Red Riding Hood in May. The studio also offers an outstanding Summer Camp which culminates with a stage show, complete with dancers in full costume performing in a theater. The Summer Intensive program attracts serious dancers in the community wanting to prepare for the start of the new academic year.

International Dance Academy, founded in 2000, is located in the Broward Lakes Business Park at 825 Shotgun Road in Weston. For more information on all programs call 954-476-4419 or visit www.danceIDA.com.

Indian Trace Elementary Spanish Club Shines at World Language Competition BY STACEY BOMSER

SCHOOL NEWS

I

ndian Trace Elementary School’s Spanish Club dominated at the Broward Public Schools’ World Language District Competitions. All of the team members who participated took home gold medals. This was the fourth year the school offered Spanish Club as an after-school activity for fourth and fifth grade students. Once a week, Spanish Teacher Beatriz Cuervo taught students about Hispanic culture and the arts. The Spanish Club spent several months preparing for the World Languages Academic Competition. Students entered the declamation, skit, talent, and 3D projects categories. According to Senora Cuervo, the judges evaluated the contestants based on creativity, artistic value, pronunciation and stress, intonation, gestures, and proficiency in handling difficult structures. Three students participated in the 3D project category, creating folk art related to the Hispanic culture and an oral presentation. Meilin Cuevas made a dress that Inca women wear in Peru. Eileen Hernandez made a guira and a tambora. These two musical instruments are essential to playing Merengue in the Dominican Republic. Scarlett Grom used clay to make models of different types of

tropical fruit. In the declamation category, Daniel Peretz won a gold medal for reciting the popular Venezuelan poem San Isidro Labrador. For the skit category, Indian Trace presented a play based on the novel La Casa de los Espiritus (The House of Spirits) by Isabel Allende. Arianna Nadorfy, Amanda Sanchez, Camila Lopez, Gabriel Quintero, Derek Whiteside and Juan Velasquez all performed. Members of the Spanish Club showed they had rhythm when they danced the Merengue to Ojalá que Llueva Café for the talent category. Iliana Gracey, Anabell Machado, Samantha Colby, Allena Dinneen, Delfina Diaz Valdez, Vanessa Cornier, Tomas Congote, Marc Norori and Axel Giron participated in the dance from the Dominican Republic. Senora Cuervo says is extremely proud of her students for the hard work and dedication they put into preparing for the World Language District Competitions. “I am so glad I had the opportunity to work with these terrific young people in the Spanish Club. We learned not only the diversity and richness of the Hispanic culture, but also that success requires discipline, sacrifice and commitment.” Indian Trace Elementary competed against teams from Eagle Point, Oakland Park, Embassy Creek, Westchester, Riverside and Ramblewood elementary schools.

Eagle Point Elementary Rockets to the Top in Science

SCHOOL NEWS

BY STACEY BOMSER

A

t Eagle Point Elementary School, students are immersed in science, both in and out of the classroom. Science is considered a “Special Class” just like art, music, media, Spanish and P.E., thus providing students with additional “hands-on” science lessons which strengthen their understanding of concepts learned during classroom curriculum. Science Teacher Emily Taggart says this formula has proven successful. “Last year, Eagle Point earned top school in the District for science according to fifth grade test scores from 2015-2016. Based on newly released raw test score data for 2016-2017, it looks as though we have held the lead for yet another year.” Mrs. Taggart says, “science is definitely a priority for students at this Weston School of Excellence.” Its SECME Club once again took top honors at the Broward SECMESTEM Olympiad, where teams from different schools compete in science, technology, engineering and mathematics related challenges that include building water bottle rockets, mousetrap vehicles, balsa bridges and other tasks. The first place Flying Falcon team “For two consecutive years, was honored during a banquet. Eagle Point has earned first place in this district-wide competition and our club is only two years old,” boasted Mrs. Taggart. “Even more impressive, the same group of girls won that honor twice.” In the bottle rocket competition, The Flying Falcon came in first place. This team consisted of two members of the prior year’s winning team, The Speedy

2017 bestof weston

Cheetah, Lara Demoraes and Marion Zachs, plus new member, Elke Gomez. All three girls were from Ms. Echemendia’s 4th grade high achievers class. “Apparently these three scientists have discovered the winning formula for the best designed rocket with the longest hang-time in the county,” shared Mrs. Taggart. “They had a winning time of 11:09 seconds, with the next closest time of Teams from Eagle Point Elementary’s SECME Club 7.78 seconds.” competed in the Broward SECME-STEM Olympiad. At the competition, The Flying Falcon was the only group to receive a standing ovation. According to Mrs. Taggart, “You can imagine how thrilled these rocketeers were when they saw their rocket gently float down to earth as the crowd went crazy.” In addition to the bottle rocket competition, members of the Eagle Point SECME Club also entered the poster and banner contests. Mrs. Taggart says this year the students will compete in the mouse-trap car event, since they have proven themselves so successful. To prepare for the bottle rocket competition at the SECME-STEM Olympiad, the students create blueprints, design the fins and have a practice launch to test their designs. Mrs. Taggart says they then make any modifications they deem necessary to make the rocket more light weight, more friction-free, or adjust the trajectory. “It is true science, engineering, technology and mathematics at work in this club.”

Indian Trace Elementary Enlists “New” Technology

SCHOOL NEWS

BY STACEY BOMSER

T

here’s an expression: everything old is new again. That seems to be the case with Recordex. The interactive flat screen panel, which has been used in business for decades, is now being used in classrooms. This is the second year Indian Trace Elementary School will utilize this revolutionary technology. Third grade teacher Patty DeBiase was one of the first instructors to implement the Recordex. The Media Center also has one, as does a second-grade classroom. Additional units will be added this school year. Mrs. DeBiase says Recordex has many advantages over the SMART Board, utilized by many schools in Weston. “A SMART Board is interactive but has some drawbacks. You need to be connected to a computer and an LCD projector, plus speakers and a document camera. So, basically you need a table to put all these devices in front of the whiteboard. The Recordex is a digital initiative that supports strategic academic goals. We can use it just like a computer and go on the internet. It comes with a 75-inch flat panel screen, a slate, document camera, wireless box and audio amplification system.” Recordex provides unparalleled learning opportunities. “This equipment

allows me and my students to do many things we could not do previously. All lesson material can now be accessed directly from the computer and displayed on the interactive flat board,” explains Mrs. DeBiase. “It allows me to work in small groups and diversify my instruction while the students are engaged and collaborate in a small group. The students can write on it using a special pen or their fingers. They can even take a screenshot using the built-in feature that captures a student’s work, so that I can review it later, thereby eliminating paperwork.” Her students use Recordex to do research, make group Power Point presentations, and play educational games. For example, to prepare for tests, Mrs. DeBiase will have the class play Jeopardy or Classroom Feud. Recordex can also be used for virtual field trips to places that are not feasible to visit, such as Colonial Williamsburg. Last year, Mrs. DeBiase’s class used it to join a live stream with the author of A Fish in a Tree. This year she intends to use it to stream the school’s morning announcements. “As with any new technology, I am still learning the many uses of Recordex,” shares Mrs. DeBiase. “I am going to continue using it to enrich our curriculum and strengthen our state standards. I would like to find another third-grade class in the county that has a Recordex and become what used to be a Pen Pal, where the students can share what they are learning and exchange ideas.”

C

hange is the only constant in the universe. As parents we intuitively understand this, because raising our children is a series of progressive changes. One of the biggest changes, both for parent and child, is starting school for the first time. For many toddlers, preschool may be the first time they are away from their parents during the day and this can be unsettling. Initially, toddlers don’t understand that when Mommy takes him to preschool for the first time that Mommy will be coming back, and they don’t have the verbal skills yet to communicate their fears. This can lead to anxiety, tears and outbursts. In addition, transitions – stopping one activity and starting up a new one – can be difficult for toddlers. This is because toddlers have a Zen concept of time: there is only the now and the future does not exist. Just try telling your toddler that he can play later, but right now he has to go to the grocery store. While change and new beginnings can be challenging, parents can help ease their child’s separation anxiety over starting preschool. I know: I am a parent, a teacher and now a director, and I did it all wrong before I knew better. Learn from my mistakes. Our children are very sensitive to our moods, so if your child senses your anxiety about the first day of school, he will be anxious too. You may want to develop a ritual – “Mommy will give you three butterfly kisses when you start school and I will always come back and give you three butterfly kisses when school is over.” It is natural to cry, but don’t cry until you have turned away. When you leave, fight the urge to peek in the window because long goodbyes are more painful and create a sense of uncertainty in your toddler. The most important thing is to set expectations. Use simple words and explain to your child, for example, “After your nap (or lunch) Mommy will be here to take you home.” You may want to develop a routine at home before leaving for school. Rather than announcing that you are leaving in ten minutes because toddlers do not have a sense of time, set a timer. Tell your child, “Every day before you go to school you and Mommy have things to do. We eat breakfast, get dressed and then you can play until you hear the timer ring. Then we put away your toys, put on our shoes, and go to school together.” Teachers are very effective at helping with transition. Talk to your child’s teacher and ask her to work with you by reading a book or singing a song to establish an arrival routine. Ask your teacher to remind your child that “Mommy always comes back after lunch or nap”. You may want your child to bring a favorite stuffed animal for comfort. Change is growth and our children will be changing and growing for a long time. Working together we can help ease the anxiety and share the joy. Sheila Woldenberg is the Director of Temple Dor Dorim’s Early Childhood Center. It has earned and maintained the highest form of accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and is currently the only preschool in Weston honored with that designation. Giving Your Child Every Advantage BY CELINA CHOCRON

W

ith the new school year starting soon, it is important to reflect on what our expectations are for our children and how we can set up a plan. Let’s use a car trip as an analogy. If you were taking a cross-country road trip, you would make a plan to assure that you have an enjoyable trip. With school starting, your child is about to embark on a ten-month journey. Therefore, you should plan now to ensure a successful, pleasant, and smooth school year. For a road trip, the first step is to check the status of your car and make sure everything is working properly. For your child’s journey, the first step is to check “his status”. What are his strengths? What are his challenges? Beware of the following signs: ▸▸ short attention for their age and grade ▸▸ trouble organizing assignments or activities ▸▸ difficulty initiating a task, unable to finish homework in an assigned time ▸▸ impulsivity If your child presents these signs, he might need support with his executive functioning skills. It is not about just telling him to pay attention and focus; it is understanding that his brain is wired differently and that he needs to acquire those skills by implementing specific strategies. Executive functions consist of several mental skills that help the brain organize and act on information. These skills enable people to plan, organize, remember things, prioritize, pay attention and get started on tasks. If there is a deficit, all activities that involve those skills might be negatively impacted. The second step, after reviewing and analyzing the status of your car, is to fix all the defects to get ready for the trip. In your child’s case, if you suspect a certain type of disability or challenge, it is imperative that you look for professional help, learn your rights, and acknowledge the options. You have the right to request a free psychological evaluation and your child has the right to receive “free and appropriate education”. Moreover, you have the right to appeal any decision made by the school district related to eligibility or services. It is important to point out that if your child is eligible for special education he could still be served in a regular classroom. Also, your child has the right to receive related services at school, such as speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy. The last step is to make sure that all the parts in your car are working effectively. This holds true for your child as well. Once the plan (Individual Educational Plan) is created, make sure that every little detail (goals, strategies, services, accommodations) is perfectly designed and gives your child every advantage for a successful school year. Our children are the future of our community. We need to assure that we are building great people in all aspects. Be prepared for the journey! Celina Chocron is the founder of Special Needs 360. She has a Master’s degree in Special Education with Autism endorsement, as well as reading and ESOL endorsement. She has more than 20 years of experience as an ESE specialist, support facilitator, behavioral coach, special education teacher, pre-K and elementary school teacher, curriculum coordinator, and principal. New Preschool Programs Prepare Students for the Future

SCHOOL NEWS

BY STACEY BOMSER

T

oday’s children are growing up in a world vastly different from their parents. These children need to be able to compete to succeed. That’s why many preschool programs are now adding STEM and bilingual programs to prepare young children for life in the increasingly global world in which we live. A Children’s Carousel has introduced a new STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program for its pre-K classes. It complements the preschool’s existing math and science curriculum. “We live in an age of automation and engineering. We must prepare our children early to compete in the global workforce. This starts with us in the Early Learning field as the primary stakeholder in STEM education,” states Terry Chemtov, owner of A Children’s Carousel. “We hope to inspire the future innovators and pioneers.” He says this will happen through hands-on labs, online applications, programming, coding, robotics and exploration of the world around them in relation to STEM. “I don’t want to give away our secret sauce, but our new STEM program will allow for discovery and then application of material. By allowing the children to explore and breaking up concepts such as ‘terminal velocity’ and its application to the material, we are able to help the students absorb it easier. You would be surprised what children can learn when you set the bar high enough.” Recognizing that these are four- or five-year-olds, songs, rhythm and other traditional preschool teaching methods will continue to be utilized. Plus, Chemtov says the STEM and robotics

curriculum A Children’s Carousel has adopted was specially designed by a team of engineers and scientists to inspire and engage students. “Through Design, Technology and Innovation, children will travel the galaxy utilizing their new-found skills to help solve problems and make it back to Earth with the resources they need to save the planet.” Being bilingual is another skill that is becoming increasingly important in today’s world. Temple Dor Dorim’s Early Childhood Center is the latest Weston preschool to offer a dual language (Spanish-English) program. For years, Tiny Planet and Tree of Life preschools have offered bilingual curriculums. ECC Director Sheila Woldenberg says introducing a second language at a young age is beneficial to children. “Research shows that the bilingual brain is sharper and more focused. Students advance in early reading and cognitive skills. In addition, students learn to problem solve and their overall school performance gets better over time.” Woldenberg says children enrolled in the dual language VPK class will spend the morning speaking English and learning the skills to prepare for kindergarten. In the afternoon, they will study conversational Spanish and learn about Hispanic cultures. The students will learn handwriting through our Handwriting Without Tears program in Spanish, as well as work on core academic skills in math, science, technology, health and nutrition in Spanish.

Twelve Weston Students Receive College-Sponsored Merit Scholarships BY STACEY BOMSER

▸▸ Cypress Bay graduate Adriana Sasso received a scholarship from the University of Central Florida. ▸▸ Evan Segaul is the recipient of a National Merit Scholarship from Vanderbilt University. He graduated from Cypress Bay. ▸▸ Michael Valladares received a scholarship from Boston University. He is a Cypress Bay graduate. These distinguished high school graduates join nearly 7,500 others in the honor of being 2017 National Merit Scholars. In total, these students will receive scholarships for undergraduate study worth more than $32 million. In addition to college-sponsored awards, two other types of National Merit Scholarships were presented earlier this year – corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards and National Merit $2500 Scholarships. The 2017 National Merit Scholarship competition began almost two years ago when more than 1.6 million high school juniors, from 22,000 high schools, took the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as the initial screen of program entrants. Last fall, about 16,000 Semifinalists were named. These students were the highest-scoring program entrants in each state and represented less than one percent of the nation’s seniors. In order to become a Finalist, each Semifinalist had to complete a detailed scholarship application. They also had to take the SAT and earn scores that confirmed their performances on the initial qualifying test. From the Semifinalist group, about 15,000 students attained Finalist standing and only about half of those students were chosen to receive National Merit Scholarships. The National Merit Scholarship Program started in 1955. Over the years, more than 330,000 outstanding students have won National Merit Scholarships worth over $1 billion.

even Weston schools earned Golden School Awards from the Florida Department of Education for the 2016-2017 school year. The annual awards recognize exemplary volunteer programs that promote parent and community involvement in education. Country Isles Elementary received special recognition for 30 consecutive years of earning the Golden School Award. Principal Mindy Morgan credits the school’s outstanding parent volunteers and community partners for its ongoing success. “It is such an honor to work with the volunteers at Country Isles. They are continuously there to support programs at our school that benefit our children,” stated Principal Morgan. “They are dedicated to the child and working with school staff to make a positive learning environment for all students. Many of them I see on a daily basis and I am so grateful for their continued support year after year.” Manatee Bay Elementary Principal Heather C. Hedman-Devaughn was equally appreciative of the volunteers at her school for helping Manatee Bay earn the Golden School Award for the fifth consecutive year. “This award recognizes one of our greatest tenants of success, the positive and consistent relationships that we have between community partners, parents, staff and students,” shared Principal Devaughn. “It’s encouraging for all to be part of such a healthy environment.” Eagle Point Elementary, Everglades Elementary, Gator Run Elementary and

Indian Trace Elementary, as well as Falcon Cove Middle School, were also named Golden School Award winners. To earn the Golden School Award, the school’s total number of hours of volunteer service must equal twice the number of students enrolled in the school. In addition, schools must have a volunteer coordinator and at least 80 percent of the staff members trained related to volunteerism. Falcon Cove Middle School also earned the Silver School Award. This recognizes secondary schools whose students volunteer within elementary schools or community organizations. To earn this award, the composite student volunteer hours must equal at least one half the total number of students in the school. In addition, a volunteer coordinator must provide training to students and faculty participating in volunteer programs. There are numerous opportunities for members of the community to volunteer in Weston schools. Volunteers can participate in programs such as Meet the Masters and Math Superstars, provide classroom assistance or literacy coaching, aid in the office or media center, coach a sports team, and much more. All volunteers must complete an application. For more information contact Broward Schools Volunteer Services at 754-321-2300 or visit www.browardschools.com/ getinvolved/Volunteer-Services.

Is Poor Gut Health Hindering Your Weight Loss Efforts? BY JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE

I

n the last decade, scientists have paid close attention to the gut/brain connection, and numerous studies have linked gut health to an array of health conditions. If you have been carrying some excess weight, guess what? Ensuring you have a healthy gut will help you feel better by regaining lost energy, and it may also give your body a much-needed push to shed those extra pounds. The collective genetic material of all your microbes is known as microbiome, a mixture of more than 100 trillion microorganisms that can affect a wide range of biological functions. We carry three pounds of it in our gut! Bacteria are the oldest form of life on earth, but there’s the good and the bad. If you end up with a less than desirable mix, a lot can go wrong - including problems with digestion and nutrient absorption. Having the right flora in your gut, for example, decreases the amount of fat that is absorbed by the intestines, which pushes it out in the waste. Even hormone production is linked to what happens in your gut, and it is no secret that hormonal imbalances are at fault for those rounder midlines. Keep in mind your gut has to get rid of toxins and break down all the foods you are consuming. What if it can’t do it efficiently, because it doesn’t have the right tools? Unfortunately, more and more Americans are suffering from unhealthy guts because of poor nutritional choices. The situation is reaching epidemic proportions, especially considering the fact that digestive disease is responsible for many other chronic health conditions. The good news is that healing is only a choice away. The solution to having a healthy gut falls solely on a person’s willingness to make the correct nutritional choices. The power of food cannot be underestimated - it is crucial in keeping our bodies looking good and operating at optimum capacity. A healthy balanced diet coupled with supplementation are the first steps if you are serious about regaining control of your health. But with so many different supplements available over the counter, along with an advertising frenzy for products that promise to bring back the “good” bacteria into your gut or make you “regular” again, it is very easy to feel overwhelmed and confused. This is why it is important to work with a qualified practitioner who can guide you in the right direction. As a functional medicine practice, Bellissimo Medical offers patient advice on how to restore health and balance through proper nutrition and medical-grade supplements. We look at you as an individual, analyze your history, and customize a plan tailored to your needs because we understand no plan fits all. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. indmill Reserve is one of the most exclusive enclaves of luxury homes in Weston. The estate residences in this private gated community are nestled among 139 acres of lakes and accented by pristine preserve views. Sovereign Real Estate Group is pleased to represent 13th Floor Investments in offering the final 22 home sites for sale. Licensed Real Estate Broker Robert Coalla explains why this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for prospective home buyers. What is the connection between Sovereign Real Estate Group and 13th Floor Investments? 13th Floor Investments is an investment and development firm. It purchased in bulk the 22 remaining lots in the exclusive, gated, 94-home community of Windmill Reserve. Senior Vice President Don Ginsberg felt this investment in the sought-after City of Weston was something they just couldn’t pass up. Sovereign Real Estate Group is a full-service real estate firm and is proudly the exclusive sales representatives for those 22 remaining lots in Windmill Reserve. These are the final lots of this kind available for sale anywhere in Broward County. Has Sovereign Real Estate Group been able to generate new interest in Windmill Reserve? Absolutely! The closing on the purchase of the 22 lots was in late April. In late May, we re-opened the on-site sales center and by

mid-July we had already sold six home sites. We are confident the Sovereign Real Estate team of professionals will close-out this community. Beyond sale of the home site, what services can you offer to prospective luxury home buyers? Although we are only offering the sale of the lots themselves, we do have a local Florida bank that is offering a loan product to help the buyer purchase the lot, provide the financing for construction of the home, and then having the loan converted into a permanent home mortgage with excellent rates and terms. For those buyers who do not have an architect and builder, we can recommend three different reputable luxury home builders that are active in southwest Broward County. Why do you think there has been a resurgence of buyers in this development? These buyers are the last ones able to select a lot and choose their own builder. Plus, they have the flexibility of building the architectural design of their choosing, whether that be Mediterranean, Contemporary, Transitional or Modern design. It’s exhilarating. We are thrilled to be a part of the sale of the final, undeveloped, ready-to-build home sites in the City of Weston. This opportunity will never be available again.

Is there anything else you would like to add? For me personally, it’s exciting to be back in sales in Weston, as I was part of the original 26 agent New Home Sales team with Arvida, the developer for the City of Weston. During the mid90’s through 2001, Arvida sold nearly 1,400 newly-built homes per year. So, out of the nearly 20,000 home dwellings built in Weston since 1986, we are now selling the final 16 home sites. This is truly a rare opportunity -- especially to be able to choose your own builder and architectural design. Robert Coalla is a Broker-Sales Associate for Sovereign Real Estate Group. ew scientific evidence suggests a headache arising as a result of mechanical problems of the neck (cervicogenic headache) is often incorrectly diagnosed as a tension or migraine headache. It is not surprising, then, that a major study recently published in the respected Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics has established that for patients diagnosed medically as having “tension” headaches, chiropractic treatment is more effective than standard medical management of the

headache. The antidepressant drug amitryptyline is often prescribed for chronic headaches. In this study, six weeks of drug therapy was compared to six weeks of chiropractic adjustments. The patients selected for this study had a history of at least one headache per week over a minimum of three months. The study found although drug therapy and chiropractic adjustments were virtually equally effective at reducing headache pain, relief with the drug therapy was accompanied by side effects in 82 percent of the patients. It was also noted that previous studies have shown amitryptyline can aggravate cardiac problems and glaucoma. By contrast, the patients receiving chiropractic adjustments reported no side effects. The real benefit of chiropractic care became apparent during the four week follow-up period after the interventions were stopped. The patients in the drug therapy group returned to their previous levels of headache suffering, while those who received chiropractic treatment reported continued headache relief. This group also reported higher levels of energy and vitality than the drug therapy group. Previous chiropractic and biomedical researchers have shown headaches can result from irritation of the spinal nerves caused by subtle joint motion and alignment problems involving the upper vertebrae of the neck. As the first controlled experiment comparing chiropractic and medical approaches to headache treatment, this study substantiates numerous accounts published in the clinical journals of relief from both tension and migraine headache following chiropractic care. ast month’s editorial (Part 1) covered the process in deciding upon the need, and therefore use, of sedation dentistry. This process requires the consideration of many factors, ranging from the child’s dental needs and age to family finances. This month’s article will assume the need and focus mostly on available options. In other words, it will tend to be less emotional and more scientifically driven. The major criteria in choosing a specific sedative agent is the depth of sedation desired. The concept of level of sedation is so important that most professional organizations categorize sedation not by the individual drugs or route of administration, but rather through the level of sedation created. The categorized levels of sedation are the following: minimal sedation, moderate sedation, deep sedation and general anesthesia. The importance of this distinction is that a facility must be adequately staffed and equipped to monitor the level of sedation used. It is important to note that facilities offering different modes of sedation are strictly regulated and go through an annual recertification process. In an effort to simplify the discussion, I will review some sedative medications based on mode of delivery, as this is usually how they are presented in the office setting. Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” is the only inhalation sedative used in pediatric dentistry. It is used as a “minimal sedative” mostly for its relief of anxiety. It is mixed in combination with pure oxygen, which assures proper concentration of oxygen to the body. Its excellent safety record, along with versatility of use, makes it the most commonly used sedative agent in pediatric dentistry. The oral sedatives can potentially span all of the levels of sedation. For example, Diazapam (Valium) or Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), when used by themselves, are mostly used as minimal sedatives. However, when used in larger doses, or in combination with other oral sedatives, these agents can cross over into moderate sedation or even deep sedation. There are many factors having to do with their absorption through the digestive system which make them more unpredictable in terms of the degree of sedation as well as duration of effect. For this reason, their use is not usually recommended for extensive treatment plans and is usually titrated from visit to visit. The sedatives delivered intravenously are used for the purpose of deep sedation. The use of these agents can be used for extended treatment times and can usually be reversed if needed by antagonist agents. Thus, intravenous sedation is the most versatile and predictable technique used in the dental office. General anesthesia, practically speaking, provides for similar conveniences as intravenous sedation. However, general anesthesia must be performed in a hospital setting and is specifically used for patients who have a higher potential for airway obstruction. When considering the use of sedation for your child, it is important to recognize that one form of sedation is not inherently better than another. Be open to all options and consider which is most appropriate for the individual patient and situation. The goal of proposed treatment should not only be the effective completion of needed dental work, but more importantly doing so with a resultant positive attitude and safety of the child. This cannot be consistently achieved with a one size fits all approach. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 954-236-3434.

oot and ankle injuries are very common in sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries that occur during the teenage years may manifest themselves later on in life. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in Direct Line the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing, the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive activity. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle. A miniature camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized and small instruments are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion. Arthroscopic surgery may be used to treat conditions such as chronic joint pain and swelling, arthritis and bone spurs, loose bone and cartilage fragments, still or scarred joints, as well as ankle fractures that have not completely recovered. The advantages of arthroscopic surgery include faster recovery, less pain and swelling, avoids large incisions, low risk of infection, it’s an outpatient procedure, and provides a quicker return to activities. Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically a full return to activity may be possible.

n today’s world, anti-aging awareness is on everyone’s mind. The big question I often get is when should I start working with a cosmetic surgeon to prevent future aging. My answer is always the same: the sooner your cosmetic surgeon gets to know you, the better. We all know that once the first signs of aging appear, the process seems to progress quickly. In order to tackle the inevitability of aging in an aesthetically natural and appealing manner, we must first have an understanding of how our faces progress and change through time. To begin with, let’s keep it simple and compare your face to the fabric on a chair: you first notice a small stain, which can be lightened to appear invisible. Over time that stain becomes more prominent and others appear around it, making the fabric appear even more stained. Then, one day, you notice the fabric isn’t as firm as it used to be, having lost its elasticity in some areas. Upon further inspection, your once plump and heavenly cushioned chair has become saggy and sunken, exposing parts of the chair’s skeleton. And then one day, you attempt to sit on your chair and the sturdy framework that lent you faithful support all of those years, finally gives in and crumbles. This is very similar to what happens to the face.    The chair’s fabric is your skin, revealing the earliest evidence of discoloration. The plump cushion is like your youthful cheeks, which are made up of all the underlying muscles and fat. And, the framework, which holds it all together, is similar to your facial skeleton. These seemingly minimal changes in your framework are often masked through time by the superficial cushioning of your facial muscles and fat pads, until redistribution and loss of tissues reveal a frail structure. Lastly, it is important to understand the implications of facial bone loss on the aging face in order to restore a natural youthful appearance. The facial skeleton experiences morphologic change, and an overall decrease in volume, with increasing age. As we approach our early 30s, bone density begins to experience a gradual rate of decline.  The aging process happens simultaneously. The facial muscles and fat pads decrease in volume, while the skin that holds them together loses its elasticity, culminating in a true domino effect. From the top down, your temples appear more sunken which leads to the formation of heavy pads beneath your eyes, followed by folds around your mouth (laugh lines), which weigh down the corners of your lips resulting in jowls along your jawline and the appearance of a saggy neck. If your goal is to age gracefully, and have a “less is more” approach, quick fixes are never the solution, rather starting earlier than later with your cosmetic surgeon will always yield the best results. This slow and steady approach involves maintenance through regular use of SPF and antioxidants to periodic laser treatments, fillers and neuromodulators.

TEE TO GREEN

P

utting is the most important part of the game and you can only excel with confidence. The good news is that putting isn’t difficult, you know you can make a short putt. The bad news is you know how difficult it is to consistently make short putts. Once you start to miss the short putts, your confidence wanes. To start holing them again you need a boost to your confidence, and therein lies the problem. How do you regain your confidence? How do you conquer the game of confidence as putting is often referred to? Repeatedly missing short putts is no fun and destroys the enjoyment you should have playing this wonderful game. Do you feel humiliated at missing another short putt? It’s simply embarrassing. No wonder it can feel like you are on a slippery slope as your game slips into an exercise of hitting and hoping. Putting with doubt and without confidence is a card wrecker, but I bet it hasn’t always been that way. Your current putting is probably totally alien to how you played as a kid when there was no fear or tension. Can you remember the competitions you used to play with your friends? There was no room for thinking you would miss. You were all absolutely confident of winning the hole. I have great memories of playing 18 holes as a junior golfer, having something to eat and drink in the clubhouse, and then out for evening contests on the practice putting green. There simply wasn’t time for dwelling on the prospect of a three putt. Instead, thoughts were of how to hole yet another monster putt. If you analyze what has happened over the decades, you may now find that the second you take your putter out of the bag, you are immediately in a love or hate relationship with the club. Quite simply, are you relishing the challenge ahead of you, or are you fearful of what might happen next? Are you fueled with positive or negative emotions? Even before you start to read the line of the putt, are you tentative rather than enthusiastic? You definitely need the solid belief that stops you from being tentative. One that comes from having real confidence. The kind built on proper foundations. Because this is the part of the game where you mentally have to be at your toughest. The truth is, you need a strong mental game to putt well. The pressure builds up as you get nearer the hole because there is no longer any more room to recover. You can recover from a sliced drive with a good recovery shot to the center of the fairway. You can even recover from a poor approach shot with a well-played chip shot. But when it comes to putting, there is nowhere to recover except from duly holing the putt in front of you. Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts to building the confidence you need to putt successfully. Next month, we’ll examine some common misconceptions about putting and learn how to help develop the skills you need to putt confidently.

When Blue Light Strikes

BY DR. JANE THERRIEN

O

ver the past ten years, many things have happened to alter our visual behavior and environment. With the growth and influence of the mobile connected digital devices, they have become a large part of our society in which the younger generation has become dependent on it. We use this technology as a basis to how we receive and transmit information. With school starting back up, we are seeing a very popular trend in school-aged children. Our prominent digital society has captured the eyes of millions of kids and adults who have their sight locked onto a screen daily. Studies suggest that 60 percent of people spend more than six hours a day in front of a digital device. That’s a whole lot of light exposure we are seeing daily. Blue light is everywhere and our eyes are constantly exposed to these harmful UV rays emitted from the smart phones, tablets, PCs, etc. These devices use a blue light for energy efficiency. When blue light reaches the back of our eye it affects our retina and can lead to eye strain. As light passes through the eye, wavelengths are managed by various parts of the eye. Blue light is unfocused in front of the retina, and scatters. The eye then constantly tries to focus the light, causing fatigue and strain. When blue light is emitted to the eye, especially right before bed, the light can suppress the production of melatonin, which is the hormone that signals the body to sleep and rest. It is important to know the dangers of exposure of UV light and the ways you can prevent too much exposure leading to these different eye diseases.

Some wavelengths of blue light that are emitted can be harmful to our eye health and vision. One of these harmful lights is blue-violet light, which can lead to age-related macular degeneration, with excess exposure. It is one of the most well-known leading causes of severe vision loss and blindness in adults over the age of 50. Light sensors in the macular provide central detail vision, but when those sensors are broken they send out a distorted image to the brain. Depending on the length and amount of exposure, it can also damage the retina. The vitality of protecting our eyes from too much exposure to these lights shouldn’t be taken lightly. Weston Family Eyecare is pleased to carry harmful UV blocking lenses, that are built into your everyday ophthalmic glasses. With new advanced optical technology, we are given the opportunity to go about our days with a safer approach. O

ver the past several years, it has come to my attention that many couples who are considering a dissolution of marriage are attempting to initiate the process in a more civilized manner. Instead of retaining an attorney, filing for the dissolution and serving their spouse, they first seek to try and resolve it by reaching an agreement. This process obviously has many possible advantages. It is obviously less costly, since the costs of litigation can be expensive. By dissolving the marriage in a rational manner, it usually leaves the couple on much friendlier terms after it is finalized. Most importantly, the couple is able to decide what is best for them and what is best for their children, instead of being told what is best by a judge. I am not suggesting that this process can work in all cases, but there certainly seems to be a movement towards this manner of resolution. A couple who wishes to resolve their marriage by negotiation should deal with each other in good faith. If there are hidden assets or attempts to gain an advantage in the negotiation, a fair and equitable resolution will not be reached. In some relationships, one party may be the person in charge of finances and, as such, may have greater knowledge of the financial position of the parties.

It is important to understand that once an agreement is signed, it is binding on both parties and very difficult to set aside. A settlement without all the information and without proper advice can often lead to inequitable results. I suggest that even if it is the intention of both parties to settle their dissolution without litigation, it is still beneficial to retain an attorney to counsel you. Of course, one attorney cannot represent both parties, but getting attorney’s involved to insure that the agreement that is reached is equitable and consistent with Florida Law can be a great benefit. I have been retained by several individuals who are in the process of negotiating a settlement with their spouse. They are seeking my guidance and expertise to assist them in reaching an equitable and lawful agreement. Most individuals do not have knowledge of certain aspects of the law and, as such, it is to their benefit to have counsel. Once an attorney is retained, a possible settlement can be discussed. Financial information can be required to insure that there is full financial disclosure. After discussing a possible agreement with the client, a proposal can be sent to either opposing counsel or, if not represented, the other spouse. This will start the negotiation process without the stress of time limitations and potential litigation. I call the above process Divorce Planning and I suggest anyone contemplating a dissolution should consider this as the starting point. If negotiations fail, the more traditional method will still be available. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

A

erobic movement of any kind helps to relieve depression and anxiety by boosting our brain’s dopamine levels and providing endorphins, but some types of exercise are superior for healing chronic conditions, mood disorders, and addiction. Yoga’s therapeutic benefits have been studied in recent decades, with much of the research being in randomized controlled trials — the most rigorous for proving efficacy. Because yoga combines physical postures (asanas) and controlled breathing, it is more beneficial in relieving depression and anxiety, and controlling addiction, than running six miles a day. Here’s a brief explanation of the science of yoga -- what specifically is happening in our bodies that makes these changes in us.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

How Yoga Helps with Depression, Anxiety, and Addiction

2017 bestof weston

Yoga Helps with Detoxification

“Ninety-five percent of all disease is a result of nutritional deficiency or toxicity.” Most of our toxins are stored in fat cells just beneath the skin, so we release them by sweating the way we do in a heated room, or providing heat with our way of breathing. Also by twisting we provide detoxication to our bodies.

Yoga Gets the Blood Flowing, Boosting Your Health

Yoga redistributes blood flow, increasing oxygen delivery and improving the circulatory system. The postures work to increase the flow of fresh, oxygenated blood to every part of the body. In essence, we are creating a tourniquet effect cutting off the blood supply to different organs and glands. Then, after 20 seconds holding the posture, the blood’s volume and pressure have reached maximum capacity and the newly oxygenated blood rushes in and floods our system. No other form of exercise can create this volume and force. The built-in Savasana in yoga trains and establishes our heart rate variability, a predictor of heart health and of general health.

Yoga Helps You Control Your Breath and More

Learning how to breathe is a critical component of the yoga practice. By voluntarily changing the rate, depth, and pattern of breathing, we can change the messages being sent from the body’s respiratory system to the brain. Breathing exercises, or pranayama, are introduced in each class, improving the function of the lungs. Properly functioning lungs send fresh oxygen throughout the body, purifying our blood.

Yoga Tames the Stress Response

Unlike some aerobic activity that increases cortisol levels, yoga tames the stress response by priming the parasympathetic nervous system. It is established science that yoga destroys and metabolizes stress hormones. Yoga moderates our stress response systems which, in turn, decreases physiological arousal — like reducing heart rate and lowering blood pressure. Yoga also increases heart rate variability, which can be an indicator of the body’s ability to respond to stress and an overall gauge for emotional resilience.

Yoga Provides You with a Caring Community

The yoga community is one of the most supportive communities of compassionate individuals you’ll ever meet. We all struggle, thrive, fail, and persevere on the mat together. That’s how to learn what we say in yoga, Namaste, “the light within me acknowledges the light within you.” Many of us are battling chronic illness, and all of us are trying to clear the mental clutter from our brains to make room for more positive and peaceful emotions. It’s extraordinarily encouraging! Carolina Sanchez is the owner of Weston Yoga and Wellness Center. It is located at 2600 Glades Circle, Suite 400. here are many good reasons to become a Rotarian. Friendship and camaraderie, business development, opportunities to serve the community, personal development, fun – these are just a few of the benefits you’ll hear new and longtime Rotarians speak of when asked about membership in the world’s oldest service organization. Engage them in further conversation and you’ll find that Rotarians are quick to share not only the reason they joined a Rotary club, but what being a Rotarian means to them on a very personal level. “Rotary has changed my life,” says Herb Schultz, a member of the Weston Rotary Club for about seven years. “It’s given me an organized platform to channel my desire to be of service, and has connected me with many wonderful people who share a passion to do good things. I feel a part of something much bigger than what I could have done on my own.” Frank Dreier echoes the sentiment of service as its own reward. “I joined three years ago because of a desire to contribute and give back to our community,” says Dreier. “Working with fellow Rotarians to bring positive changes to others’ lives and being surrounded by so many truly dedicated people is a humbling experience, but also inspires me to continue my Rotary journey. BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK

BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

J

ust 100 years ago, state legislatures began passing laws to seal the birth certificates of children adopted at birth. By doing so, this created privacy for the birth parents, adoptive parents, and added an air of legitimacy to children born out of wedlock. States then issued an amended birth certificate so that adopted children approaching and becoming adults could prove their eligibility to get driver’s licenses and passports and also be able to register to vote. Much has changed today. Out of wedlock births do not have the same stigma that they once had, and more and more people who adopt children have what they call ‘open adoptions.’ Adopted children, such as me, who become adults, now question laws that block us from gaining access to our records. For this reason, I filed HB 257 this past year, that would allow children adopted as babies to be able to get a copy of their Original Birth Certificate upon becoming 18 years of age. This is part of a national trend, and over 20 states have changed their laws to accommodate adult adoptees just within the past 12 years. HB 257 is the first bill of its kind to be filed in Florida.

As simple as this sounds, there has been opposition in every state where there has been an effort to make changes to accommodate adult adoptees. The most common are that the privacy of the birth parents will be at risk, adoption rates will go down, and abortion rates will go up. In every state where the law was changed, these arguments were debunked. In passing new laws, some states allow adoptees to obtain their birth certificate as easily as non-adoptees, and in some states there are restrictions, such as allowing birth parents to be able to remove or redact their names from a requested certificate. Law changes have been signed by Democrat and Republican Governors. This year, the Original Birth Certificate bill in Florida did not get a hearing as it was a new idea that the legislature did not weigh in on. Opposition groups in most states have generally been those in the business of adoption, fearing loss of control of the search process of adults who want to locate birth parents, or birth parents searching for the children they gave up for adoption. Often it is attorneys and organizations in the adoption business fearing loss of revenue. In my first year working this bill, there were no statistics to show that states that have opened up birth records have less adoptions or more abortions. It is time for Florida to join the chorus of states that now recognize that children of adoption, once they become adults, should be entitled to the same rights as all citizens. While I applaud parents who adopt, I ask that you allow us to be the independent adults you raised us to be and give us the same rights that you have. State Representative Richard Stark (D-Weston) represents House District 104 which includes all of Weston. You can reach Rep. Stark at Richard.Stark@myfloridahouse.gov or by calling his legislative office at 954-217-0287.

Multidimensional Approach to Facial Rejuvenation

A

s a person ages, there is a loss of collagen and elastin in the skin, alteration in the skeletal framework, and a progressive loss, or atrophy, of facial fat. These alterations in skin, fat, and bone result in distinctive changes in facial appearance. Increased skin laxity, prominence of the nasolabial folds and jowls, increased depth, and number of facial wrinkles characterize the aging face. A youthful face is fuller, more angular, with high cheekbones, a distinctive jawline, and smooth skin. To achieve the optimal result in facial rejuvenation, it is necessary to address all the underlying elements that affect the appearance of the face. There are four areas to treat skin surface, laxity or excess skin, soft tissue support structure, and biochemical composition within the skin. The first is the skin surface - fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, and skin texture. This area is rejuvenated through typical skin treatments, such as sublative eMatrix laser therapy, chemical peels and microdermabrasion and Botox® and Dysport®, as well as topical creams, such as Retin A, glycolic based products, and moisturizers that contain Hyaluronic acid. These products help diminish fine facial wrinkles and improve pigmentation. The second area to address is skin looseness or laxity, as well as skin excess. When redundant skin creates deep folds and jowls, the excess skin should be removed. There are multiple face-lifting techniques. The specific procedure should be adapted to the individual patient’s anatomy through a minifacelift or full facelift, or modification of these procedures such as an “S” lift or lifestyle lift. Thirdly, the soft tissue structure that supports the skin may need to be enhanced. Fat grafting adds volume that is lost as a result of atrophy of facial fat and descent of supporting soft tissue. During the early stages of facial aging, soft tissue fillers, such as Juvederm® (Voluma and Vollure), Restylane® (Refyne and Defyne), and Radiesse® can accomplish this as well. Finally, an area that most surgeons and patients neglect is the skin, the organ. The biochemical makeup of the skin is affected by what we eat and put into our bodies. Omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants aid in restoring a healthy appearance to the skin. Consuming foods high in essential fatty acids, vitamins A, C, D, and E and antioxidants make the skin appear more youthful. Avoiding sun exposure and not smoking also improves skin appearance. To summarize, as we age, the alterations that take place resulting in an aging appearance are multifactorial. Because of this, treatment options must also address all these components – the skin surface, skin excess, structural support, and the skin composition. Seven Reasons Why You Should Work With A REALTOR® BY ANGIE GUERRERO

REAL ESTATE

W

e are not just agents or salespeople. We are professional members of the National Association of REALTORS® and subscribe to its strict code of ethics. This is the REALTOR® difference for home buyers and home sellers: An expert/licensed advisor: Selling a home usually requires dozens of forms, reports, disclosures, and other technical documents. A knowledgeable expert will help you prepare the best deal, and avoid delays or costly mistakes. Also, there’s a lot of new jargon involved, so you want to work with a professional realtor who can speak the language and keep you up to date with the deadlines and is able to deal with all parties involved in the process such as inspectors, insurers, lenders, appraisers, title companies, surveyors, etc. Objective information and opinions: REALTORS® can provide local information on utilities, zoning, schools, parks, hospitals and more. They also have objective information about each property. REALTORS® can use that data to help you define if the property has exactly what you need. They have a duty to provide this information to you so you can make the best decision. Property Marketing Power: A home doesn’t sell due to advertising alone. A large percentage of real estate sales come as the result of a realtor’s contacts with previous clients, friends, and family. Personal showings, professional photography, brochures with key information about your home, list of upgrades and video tours are a must nowadays and should be available at all homes when listed by a professional Realtor. When a property is marketed by a REALTOR®, you do not have to allow strangers into your home. Your REALTOR® will generally pre-screen and accompany qualified prospects through your property. Don’t settle for less! Negotiation Knowledge: There are many factors up for discussion in a deal such as deposits, closing dates, inspection dates, etc. A REALTOR® will be able to look at every angle from your perspective, whether you are selling or buying, including the preparation of a purchase agreement that allows you the flexibility you need to take that next step or the negotiation of that offer you have been waiting for. Up-to-Date Experience: Most people sell only a few homes in a lifetime, usually with quite a few years in between each sale. Even if you’ve done it before, laws and regulations change. Also, laws from state to state/country vary significantly. REALTORS® handle hundreds of transactions over the course of their career. They are constantly trained. A Gibraltar Rock during emotional moments: A home is so much more than four walls and a roof. And for most people, property represents the biggest purchase they’ll ever make. Having a concerned, caring, honest, but objective, third party helps you stay focused on the issues most important to you. Ethical treatment: Every REALTOR® must adhere to a strict code of ethics, which is based on professionalism and protection of the public. With a REALTOR®, you can expect honest and ethical treatment in all transactionrelated matters.

PET OF THE MONTH

Why Prevent Heartworm Disease? BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM

PET CARE

H

eartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition that affects dogs, cats, and up to 30 other species of mammals. It is caused by parasitic worms (heartworms) living in the major vessels of the lungs and, occasionally, in the heart. The scientific name for the heartworm parasite is Dirofilaria immitis. Although heartworm disease is virtually 100% preventable, many dogs are diagnosed with it each year. Heartworm disease has been diagnosed in all 50 states. The American Heartworm Society (AHS) estimates that one million dogs in the United States are infected with the disease today, and this number may be rising.

What Is ProHeart 6?

ProHeart 6 is an injectable medication that is used in dogs six months of age or older to prevent heartworm disease. Your veterinarian will administer ProHeart 6 as a single injection under your dog’s skin. Once the drug is given, it continuously prevents heartworm disease for six months. Using ProHeart 6 means that you don’t need to remember to administer a monthly oral or topical heartworm preventive medication to your dog. Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes. To properly protect your dog, ProHeart 6 should be administered within one month before mosquitoes appear where you live. If you are switching from another heartworm preventive medication, ProHeart 6 should be administered within one month after the last dose of the other product. This will help ensure that your dog is continuously protected. In addition to preventing heartworm disease, ProHeart 6 treats hookworm infections. Hookworms are parasites that can live in the intestines of dogs. These parasites attach to the inner lining of the intestines and drink blood. Hookworm infections can cause severe diarrhea, blood loss, and weight loss. In young puppies, severe hookworm infections can even be fatal. Hookworms can also infect humans, so treating infected dogs also helps to protect other family members.

Important Safety Information

Before initiating heartworm prevention with ProHeart 6, your veterinarian may recommend a full physical examination for your dog. Some diagnostic testing may also be recommended, including a heartworm test. Any dog that tests positive for heartworm disease should be treated before receiving ProHeart 6. Your veterinarian will likely review your dog’s medical history before administering ProHeart 6. Be sure to discuss any of your dog’s previous illnesses or medical problems with your veterinarian. ProHeart 6 should not be used in sick, debilitated, or underweight dogs or in dogs with a history of weight loss. It should be used with caution in dogs with a history of allergies, such as food allergy, flea allergy dermatitis, or allergic reactions to vaccines. Talk to your veterinarian about administering ProHeart 6 along with vaccines. Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E. Cordova and his staff are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 2701 Executive Park Drive, Suite 1. Celebrating the

Best of Weston

The publishers, Terry and Christy Jaillet, and staff of Our City Media welcomed community leaders and business owners to a celebration in honor of the 2017 Best of Weston winners. Midtown Athletic Club hosted the party which included an awards presentation. Winners received a beautiful crystal award which they can proudly display in their office or establishment. The annual Best of Weston magazine distinguishes Weston’s best businesses and community events as chosen by the readers of Our City Weston. Categories include Health & Wellness, Beauty & Aesthetics, Children’s Products & Services, Home Services, Professional Services, Pet Services, Restaurants, and Best of the Best, which recognizes the most popular community events and cultural programs held in Weston. You can view Best of Weston 2017 online anytime at www.ourcitymedia.com.
