We Have Much to be Thankful For

M

any of us take a moment to sit back and give thanks during November. At Our City Media, we have something special to be thankful for, our eighth magazine, Our City Fort Lauderdale, was launched this month! Our City Fort Lauderdale is just like this magazine – full of local community and school news stories and delivered to our readers’ mailboxes every month. We are proud that Our City Magazines are a little bit different than other magazines you might receive. We are deliberately and specifically a local magazine and strive to be your source for community and school news. We are also quite proud of our positive voice. Don’t look in these pages for gotcha journalism, crime blotters or divisive political exposés. You won’t find them. However, do look for uplifting stories such as the incredible, selfless acts our neighbors performed before, during and after the recent hurricanes. You also might find pictures of a cute little puppy or a group of students competing in a science fair. In this time of Thanksgiving, we are thankful for the wonderful group of people we work with, the incredible communities we serve, and the hard-working local businesses and advertising partners that make publishing this magazine possible.

A Category 5 of Kindness COMMUNITY NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

J

ust a couple of months ago, Hurricane Irma blew through Florida leaving many devastated. Although Hollywood did not receive the worst of her fury, she still left much damage in her wake. Many communities lost power for days in west Hollywood, many of which were in low-income areas. These residents had no food in their refrigerators or the financial resources to replenish their supply. Fortunately, Kevin Biederman, Commissioner of District 5, his wife, Donna, and Community Emergency Response Team member, Melissa Gouthro decided that they had to ease some of Mother Nature’s stress. So, they began by donating and delivering some hot meals to the residents. The small gesture then morphed into larger scheduled community barbecues. Organizations and area residents wanted to help in any way they could as part of a relief effort. The trouble was, there was no scheduled relief effort and no resources to have volunteers assist with. Because of Kevin and Donna Biederman’s years of community

service with the Hollywood Jaycees, and the generosity of local chef Kevin Dreifuss, and other sponsors, the small gesture of providing 50 hot meals to residents turned into three community barbecues over a 3-day period serving approximately 500 residents in need. “In the Hollywood Jaycees, the last line of our creed is that ‘Service to Humanity is the Best Work of Life’, and I like to live by this statement,” stated Commissioner Kevin Biederman. “It is not only a nice thing to do; it is the right thing to do as good neighbors.” The first community barbecue was held at the Boulevard Heights Community Center and the second one was held in the driveway of a resident’s house at the corner of 67th Terrace and Thomas St. The final barbecue was held at the Housing Authority Apartments, where hundreds of low-income residents and seniors live. For those not wanting or able to leave their residences, volunteers delivered food to them.

“What a truly humbling experience for us all. They say to prepare for 3 days after a storm and many did, but when power was out for more time than anticipated, it created a hardship on low-income residents. These residents needed help and we were happy to be there with neighbors and friends helping,” added Donna Biederman. Elected representatives Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and her aide, Harrison Grandwilliams, Mayor Josh Levy and Commissioner Biederman’s wife, Donna and daughter, Ciara, visited some residents of the Housing Authority to distribute food and information regarding applying for FEMA assistance. Many individual neighborhood volunteers eagerly assisted by providing coolers, tables and chairs, and labor. “I’m so proud of all of the volunteers and residents who took the time to help each other after the storm,” said Mayor Josh Levy.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Welcome Home! Honor Flight South Florida Veterans Honored BY BEVERLY PERKINS

H

onor Flight South Florida is always looking for World War II Veterans in Broward, MiamiDade, Palm Beach and Monroe counties to participate in “Operation One Last Mission”. This program takes veterans to Washington, DC on a charter flight at designated times during the year, and is free of charge to those nominated. The non-profit charity wants to thank and pay tribute to as many heroes, especially World War II (WWII) veterans, by honoring and remembering them. The fully escorted trip recently returned from one of their fall flights. One lucky recipient of the 140 veterans that were chosen was Hallandale resident Sumner (Shamai) Taplin. The World War II veteran was guided by a Vietnam vet on the 24-hour journey. Besides the obvi-

ous trip highlights, another is the infamous “mail call”. On the plane, all participants had their names called individually, and letters were distributed from family, friends, and students from around the state. Taplin was beyond ecstatic to be the recipient of 300 letters from his loved ones. The mission included round-trip airfare, deluxe bus transportation, meals, souvenir t-shirts and other amenities to travel comfortably. Disabled Veterans are also welcome. Top priority is given to the most senior patriots to make sure they have an opportunity to take part of this program. This experience included visits to the memorials built to honor their service and sacrifice. An outstanding moment of every trip is the visit to the World War II Memorial. In addition, each trip includes a stop at the Marine Corps Iwo Jima Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery where one can see the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Past Honor Flights have included stops at the Lincoln Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, the Air Force Memorial, and even the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial. The group was escorted through the city by a team of well-trained volunteers and a police motorcade.

In addition, each veteran was accompanied by an assigned guardian who pays their way to be a part of the remarkable experience. Upon their arrival at the Fort LauderdaleHollywood International Airport, a special welcome parade with bagpipes, patriotic music, and plenty of loved ones waving American flags greeted the WWII and Korean veterans as they were pushed in wheelchairs by Vietnam veterans. Hollywood resident Joyce Bak said, “Welcome home!” to a Vietnam vet, and with tears in his eyes he said, “I have been waiting 40 years to hear that.” Veterans are encouraged to register for flights at www.honorflightsouthflorida. org or by calling 855-359-1838. Honor Flight South Florida, Inc. (HFSF) is a federal non-profit 501(c)(3) charity, 100% all-volunteer organization dedicated solely to honoring Veterans in Broward, Dade, and Monroe counties. Every donation received goes toward honoring and flying the Veterans to Washington DC.

B

roward County Animal Care and Adoption (BCAC) is dedicated to providing shelter for lost and homeless animals. The agency promotes responsible pet ownership and community safety by reuniting lost pets with their owners, rescuing neglected pets, increasing adoptions, and reducing pet overpopulation. Additionally, it provides the community access to hundreds of shelter pets hoping for a new home. The organization strongly encourages spaying and neutering pets, and have made it simpler by providing a portable spay/neuter unit to help reduce the pet population. The portable spay/neuter unit that was acquired by BCAC has been folded up and is being moved to the next targeted location, John Williams Park located at 6101 Sheridan Street, Hollywood, 33021. The Humane Society of Broward County is the service provider for the 400-square foot unit and appointments for free and low-cost pet spay/neuters are now being accepted.  The goal is to sterilize a minimum of 400 pets per month at this location.  To book an appointment call 954-463-SPAY (7729). Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Celebrates 25 Years COMMUNITY NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

nce upon a time, an American icon shared his name with what has become one of the nation’s premier pediatric healthcare facilities right here in Hollywood. Back then, the deal was sealed the old-fashioned way, with a promise and handshake. The promise, made by then Memorial Healthcare System President & CEO Frank V. Sacco to Joe DiMaggio, was that no child would ever be denied care because his or her family was unable to pay. That was all the very private “Yankee Clipper” needed to hear to endorse a very public use of his name and image. The baseball Hall of Famer then took things a step further after that, cutting the ribbon on the newly-christened Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH).   25 years later, JDCH has grown from a few units on a single floor at Hollywood’s Memorial Regional Hospital to the largest pediatric hospital serving Broward, Palm Beach, and northern Miami-Dade counties. A freestanding facility specially designed to meet the needs of children and families opened in 2011 and today features 650 physicians, 226 licensed beds, seven operating rooms, and an entire floor dedicated to oncology. Rehabilitation, dialysis, emergency care, and a cardiac surgery program that has performed 36 heart transplants in less than seven years are just a few of the other areas of specialization.

NOVEMBER 2017 | OUR CITY HOLLYWOOD

“We’re a quaternary care facility, meaning we treat some of the most complex and critical clinical conditions,” said Chantal Leconte, FACHE, administrator and chief executive officer at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “We’ve grown in the last 25 years into a pediatric healthcare destination that’s known for clinical expertise, advanced technology, and a patient and family-centered approach to care.”    Part of the Memorial Healthcare System (www.mhs.net), the stand-alone facility has received considerable recognition. It was the world’s first children’s hospital designated to be Patient Centered by the Planetree organization, has earned the Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence for Patient Experience five consecutive years, and has been ranked among the top 50 children’s hospitals in the country by U.S. News and World Report for the past five years. Moving forward, a pediatric kidney transplant program will soon launch and a Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital specialty practice will open in Wellington in 2018. It will be the hospital’s third physician practice in Palm Beach County.  Additionally, there are plans to double the size of the current Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, eventually making it an eight-story building. Memorial Healthcare System administrators believe the move will further increase patient access to high-level, pediatric healthcare in South Florida, which has been a guiding principle for the past 25 years.  Two and a half decades later, Joe DiMaggio would be proud that his promise to take care of the children has been kept.

The Hollywood Lions Club ROARS with a 1920’s Fundraising Gala

20

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he Hollywood Lions Club (HLC) recently became an official charter club of Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service club organization with more than 1.4 million members in approximately 46,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world. To celebrate their achievement, they decided to have the “Big Roar”, an inaugural fundraising gala. What better way to let the community know about their presence than with a 1920’s roaring celebration. Members and their guests put on their fedora hats, flapper dresses, boas, and pearls as they dined and danced to raise funds for Project Alive and the cure to treat Hunter syndrome at the Hollywood Beach Marriott in late September. The sold-out event had everyone in full swing before the event even started. Many showed up for pre-celebratory beach events in the early afternoon before the main event took place. A happy hour followed before the cocktail reception and finally the dinner, ceremony, and full party. One highlight of the evening was the Charleston dance contest where the winner received a trophy for their fancy foot work. Hunter Syndrome (MPS II) is a rare genetic disease that affects less than 500 boys in the United States. These boys are missing an enzyme used to break down cellular waste. When that waste builds up, it leads to progressive damage throughout their little bodies. Some never develop speech, but some boys learn like a typical child then begin losing skills and what they’ve learned at a young age. They eventually lose the ability to walk, talk and eat. Most do not live to see their teen years. “Our gala in was a huge success for our first fundraiser.  I love that we can and will help all different charities, but for this one, our goal was to raise $5,000, and we raised close to $13,000!” exclaimed Rich Aube, Hollywood Lions Club President. “We were hoping to sell 100 seats. We maxed out The Hollywood Beach Marriot’s main ballroom at 200 guests and fellow Lions. A big thankful ‘ROAR’ to all those

that attended and/or supported it!” Since 1917, the non-profit service organization has wanted to be the global leader in community and humanitarian service while encouraging peace and promoting international understanding. One hundred years later, the new Hollywood charter plans on helping them achieve their mission. So far, they are off to a great start, they certainly proved they know how to “Roar”! All profits raised from the evening will go towards finding a cure for the disease. To get involved or to make a donation, please contact Rich Aube, Hollywood Lions Club President at HollywoodLionsClub@gmail.com or calling 954-922-9411.

Orange Brook Elementary Students Scored Big with Miami Dolphins Visit

SCHOOL NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he anticipated 2017-2018 school year and football season kicked off. However, not all Broward and Miami-Dade students had the privilege of being prepared with all the proper “training gear”. The Miami Dolphins tackled this problematic issue a few years ago and continue the tradition by hosting their annual “Back to School Backpack Event”. But, due to Hurricane Irma, the event held at Dave & Buster’s in Hollywood was cancelled. Instead, Dolphins players, cheerleaders, and mascot T.D. distributed backpacks directly at the pre-selected schools, one being Hollywood’s Orange Brook Elementary. In addition to backpacks filled with school supplies, the students received team logo t-shirts and had the opportunity to socialize and

engage with Miami Dolphins players. Wide receivers Malcolm Lewis, Rashawn Scott, and Kenny Stills, kicker Cody Parkey and tackle Eric Smith started the morning off at Orange Brook Elementary along with cheerleaders Etta and Tamara and mascot T.D., where they met with 25 select students chosen by their principal based on their hard work in school and need of school supplies. The players and cheerleaders greeted the kindergartners and first graders with high fives as they came into the room before introducing themselves and passing out the backpacks, which contained notebooks, folders, a ruler, and other items. After taking a group photo, the Dolphins served Papa John’s pizza to the students and sat down with them for lunch and conversation. The students also received coupons for a free frosty compliments of Wendy’s. “It’s priceless. It’s really good to see the kids and give back to them and see them happy,” said Malcolm Lewis, whose mother works at Orange Brook. “I’m from Miami, so it’s just a blessing to be in a position

where you can give back and make these kids’ days. It’s all about just giving back when you can.”  “This is our fourth year doing this Back to School Backpack Event and it’s always a great success. This year we obviously got pushed back a little bit because of the storm, but we are glad we got to come out to these schools today to meet with these students and put smiles on their faces,” said Miami Dolphins Senior Vice President of Communications and Community Affairs Jason Jenkins. “We love every chance we get to give back to the South Florida community.”

Play Like a Girl – Hollywood Hills Football Player Receives Prestigious Honor BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he Miami Dolphins strive to emphasize the importance of education, physical fitness and positive choices for kids in a safe and fun environment in an effort to create leaders of tomorrow. The nonprofit organization, Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE), dedicates itself to harnessing the unifying power of sport to advance race relations and drive social progress while developing meaningful educational programming. Together the two organizations formed an alliance to achieve their similar goals. The perfect partnership shows their dedication to promote positive youth programs in educational systems. An example of their joint venture is a sixteen-week awards program which lasts the duration of the Dolphins season. The program recognizes members of the community who have demonstrated their commitment to being leaders on and off the field. Each week, the Dolphins will identify a high school coach of the week, high school player of the week, youth player of the week and team mom of the week. In week three it was announced that a Hollywood Hills High School student earned the “High School Player of the Week” title. Holly Neher, a 5’0” junior entered the game in the fourth quarter and completed a 42-yard touchdown pass to Alexander Shelton. With that pass, Neher became the first female quarterback in Florida high

school history to throw a touchdown pass in a varsity game. “To be named the Miami Dolphins player of the week is a tremendous honor. It’s an amazing feeling of accomplishment, and I’m happy that a lot of hard work has paid off,” said Neher. “I couldn’t have won this award without the support of my teammates and coaches.” “We are overwhelmed to have someone from our program recognized by the Miami Dolphins as the player of the week. As a school who is proud to participate in the Rise program, we’re thrilled that Holly’s ground-breaking achievement is being recognized by our hometown team. Holly is such a tremendous athlete because she is a hard worker who understands the value of team.  Her constant desire to improve has made her not just a great female quarterback but a phenomenal football player. She really has the ‘it’ factor, going back to flag football, there was something about the grit and the drive,” stated Head Coach Brandon Graham. “That said, she has had to earn everything. What makes Holly’s accomplishments special is that she knew before the season that If she didn’t earn it, then she wouldn’t play. I think it would’ve devalued everything she’s worked for.  The entire program and Hollywood Hills high school is proud of Holly for becoming the first female to throw a touchdown pass and for becoming a role model to young ladies everywhere.”  Besides being an amazing athlete, Neher is a stellar student with a 4.0 GPA. She would love to attend Florida State University and study law.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patient’s once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, fine needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

hen my five-year-old daughter was a toddler, she ate everything and anything. I thought I had mastered toddler meals. Then my son came along, and I was suddenly introduced to the concept of picky eating. He would wiggle out of his high chair, run away, throw food and pour bowls of cereal on his head. After speaking to other parents and many of my patients’ families, I realized that toddler eating habits are a common source of stress. Most toddlers go through a phase of picky eating as part of their development. They are learning to say “no” and express their preferences for the first time. It is not unusual for them to eat only one or two things for weeks at a time. Often times, they will eat well at breakfast and refuse any food the rest of the day. It is also common for toddlers’ tastes and preferences to change readily from one day to the next. Your two-year-old can go weeks loving strawberries and then suddenly throw a tantrum at the mere suggestion of strawberries for snack. This is a normal part of toddler’s’ emotional development. The most important thing is to continue to offer healthy foods even if your child consistently declines them. These situations often contribute to stressful mealtimes. Parents feel exacerbated and end up giving in to their toddlers’ requests out of desperation. I often tell families that you may choose what goes on the plate, but your child chooses how much of it they eat.  Try to avoid making special meals for them and encourage them to eat whatever the rest of the family is having. If they refuse, you may offer a piece of fruit, otherwise the meal is over.   Kids will generally not starve themselves and will eat when they are hungry. This may take some time; however, the key is consistency. Meals should be a relaxing time shared with other family members. Kids should not be punished for refusing to eat, nor should they be bribed with sweets or other things to encourage them to eat. It is important to continue to offer healthy options for meals and snacks. Food should be age appropriate. Avoid finger foods that could cause choking. Children don’t fully develop the grinding motion involved in chewing until they’re about 4 years old, so stick with foods that are small and easy to chew and avoid those that might be swallowed whole and get stuck in your toddler’s windpipe. Foods to avoid are: ▸▸ Raw carrots ▸▸ Large sections of hot dogs ▸▸ Raw celery ▸▸ Raw cherries with pits ▸▸ Whole Direct Linegrapes ▸▸ Round, hard candy ▸▸ Peanuts and other nuts ▸▸ Popcorn If your family has dietary limitations such as vegetarianism or veganism, or if you have concerns about your child’s weight gain, be sure to talk to your pediatrician about the need for vitamin and calorie supplementation.

Buttock Enhancement (a.k.a. Brazilian Butt Lift) BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, MD, FACS

ASK THE EXPERT

J

ennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian started a craze for an enhanced buttock. Flat or less protruding rear ends everywhere are being surgically enhanced into more shapely curves and feminine fullness. More women everywhere are considering, or getting buttock enhancements – lifted, sculpted, or augmented. Tighter fitting clothing, such as low-cut sweats, workout pants and leotards are seen in public more often, and a more shapely feminine figure has become aesthetically more desirable. The popularity of the butt lift is not just a U.S. fashion fad. Many women desire to enhance their buttock and thigh region to create a beautiful buttock shape and the very attractive sweep of the lower back, hips and waist. The buttock augmentation (a.k.a. Brazilian Butt Lift) is enjoying a surge in popularity, because women are unhappy with their buttocks - viewing them as too flat, too wide, or sagging. They were either born like this, or lost the form and shape of their buttocks after losing or gaining weight. Pregnancy, or just aging alone, can also affect the size, projection, and profile of the buttocks. Inability to achieve perky buttocks and sexy curves through exercise and muscle toning has frustrated healthconscious women. There are a variety of cosmetic surgery procedures available for those who desire youthful, fuller, and perky buttocks, with a more sensual body profile. These techniques vary depending on what is actually missing and what is the overall body frame and form. For example, there are many who are either genetically or by weight gain have developed “fat and wide” buttocks. Liposculpture can shape their buttocks and the surrounding tissues to make the buttocks rounder and more proportional to the rest of the figure. On the other hand, there are those who have “flat and wide” buttocks. In addition to utilizing liposculpture to shape their waist, hips and buttocks, fat injection or grafting is used to augment the buttocks and to provide fullness and projection. Because it also helps to lift loose buttock tissue, this procedure is also referred to as a Brazilian Buttock Lift. Contrary to the above, there are some with sagging buttocks who are not a candidate for Brazilian Buttock Augmentation. These are people whose buttocks sag as a result of massive weight loss, such as after a gastric bypass surgery. These individuals would benefit from a body lift procedure which removes excess skin and helps to lift their thighs and buttocks. During your consultation, Dr. Messa will review your treatment options for buttock contouring, augmentation and enlargement. He will discuss if you are a good candidate, surgical options and techniques, potential risks and complications of surgery, pre- and post-operative instructions, as well as what to expect after surgery. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. KAPOW Lessons Make Some Noise at Boulevard Elementary! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

incorporate the real-life application of the skills they teach on a daily basis. The goals of KAPOW can be summarized in three words: Relate, Reinforce & Connect. In order to achieve this goal, KAPOW brings community and business volunteers into schools to teach kids about work, and how to be successful. John Casbarro, President of Learning for Success, Inc. which manages KAPOW in South Florida states, “Young people need to understand that there is a reason for studying beyond doing so for the sake of learning. The KAPOW program addresses this need by helping young people understand early in life that reading, writing, and math are vital to success in school, work, and life.” Although, not in comic books, the individuals who take part in the program are indeed superheroes.

SCHOOL NEWS

W

hen one sees the phrases such as ZAP, POW, KABOOM, or KAPOW many think of the pop art images placed in comic books alongside their favorite superheroes. However, the KAPOW we are referencing is the program created by Learning for Success, Inc. (LFS). As part of the Kids and The Power of Work (KAPOW) program, students from Boulevard Heights Elementary learned about positive work habits and attitudes during their scheduled KAPOW lesson with volunteer Scott Evans and teachers Alexis Starzyk and Cindy Caviares. The lesson was also attended by City of Hollywood officials Hilde Johnson and Renee Richards, and Principal Juan Alejo. “This is my third year as a Kapow volunteer and I am always inspired by the eager and excited response we get from the kids,” says Scott Evans. “I too am impressed by the real concern the teachers and principals have for the students and the quality of their education. Hilde and Renee were very impressed. The lesson was great, the kids were wonderful, and the exchanges we had with the City folks was much appreciated!” KAPOW, now in its 25th year, serves 6,000 students annually. The unique collaboration between the school district, 100 area businesses and community organizations, volunteers, and 64 South Florida schools introduces and exposes students to career awareness through professionally designed lessons taught by volunteers in the classroom and on work sites. KAPOW addresses this need for relevance through a powerful set of lessons for elementary, middle and high school students taught by volunteers and teachers, field trips to work sites, and curriculum-relevant activities for teachers to

KAPOW is always looking for business or individual volunteers, as well as schools interested in participating in the program. For more information about volunteering or how your school can participate, email KAPOW Program Director Tania Reynolds at taniakapow@gmail.com or call 954-680-3916.

S

ciatica (pronounced sigh-at-eh-kah) is a term used to describe the symptoms of pain such as tingling, numbness, or weakness in the leg. The pain typically begins in the lower back and travels down the buttock and then down the large sciatic nerve in the back of each leg. Although sciatica is not a medical diagnosis, it is a symptom of an underlying medical condition. Common lower back problems such as a herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, or spinal stenosis often cause sciatica symptoms. Physicians may diagnose a patient with sciatica if they have one or more of the

following symptoms: ▸▸ Leg pain that is often described as burning, tingling, or numb ▸▸ Difficulty moving the leg, foot, and/or toes ▸▸ Sharp pain which makes it difficult to stand or walk ▸▸ Constant pain on one side of the buttock or leg ▸▸ Radiating pain down the leg and possibly into the foot ▸▸ Lower back pain

Sciatic pain can vary from infrequent and annoying to constant and debilitating. This is usually a result of the location of the pinched nerve which can intensify during sudden movements, or changing positions such as moving from a sitting to standing position. The sciatic nerve is the largest single nerve in the body and is made up of individual nerve roots which start in the lower back. Symptoms occur when the large nerve is compressed or irritated at or near its point of origin. The condition will need to be treated if it is severe with ongoing flare-ups of sciatic nerve pain so it does not worsen over time. However, nonsurgical treatments in conjunction with certain exercise can relieve the pain most patients experience. These include heat/ice, pain medications such as muscle relaxers, and epidural steroid injections. Some may be temporary fixes and work for some patients but not all. When the pain is severe or does not get better on its own, a more structured treatment approach, and possibly surgery, may be the best option to preventing or minimizing future pain and/or dysfunction for those who cannot get relief otherwise. It’s best to share all your symptoms with your physician so the best approach can be made to design a treatment program. Felix M. Ramirez, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Pembroke Pines/Hollywood area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. Interventional Pain Physicians of South Florida is located at 2301 N. University Drive, Suite 204, Pembroke Pines, FL 33024. To schedule an appointment, please call (954) 447-0577.

I

t’s difficult to grasp how the fury and force of hurricanes are unless one is in it. Like many of you, we have just been through Hurricane Irma, and myself and the entire RE/MAX 5 Star Realty team have you in our thoughts. We hope that you, your family, friends, and neighbors are safe and recovering, and rebuilding from any damage that may have occurred. We are all still extremely fortunate and blessed to not receive the strongest part of the storm and are thankful for the positive lessons that came out of such a negative part of nature. During the time, I created a short list of the good things Irma did

bring to all of us. ▸▸ Families were brought together. ▸▸ Friends, communities and neighbors were helping each other. ▸▸ The power of praying is important to so many. ▸▸ There was no discrimination. Race, color, religion or age didn’t matter. ▸▸ Our similarities were all made apparent and made us forget our differences. ▸▸ People neglected errands, and chores got done. ▸▸ Diets and counting calories didn’t matter. ▸▸ Garages and pantries got cleaned. ▸▸ People paid attention to one another instead of smart phones. ▸▸ Kids played with real toys, and families played games. ▸▸ People used humor instead of anger to cope with stress. ▸▸ It was confirmed that stuff is not important, only people are. ▸▸ It doesn’t matter what you drive or where you live. ▸▸ It shows us how great it is to live in America.   ▸▸ Everyone showed how much love there was for each other. ▸▸ Respect for the powerful forces of Mother Nature. I personally feel blessed with my neighbors and friends. I was also blessed to have had a generator, and feel good that I could run extension cords to my neighbor’s house and help others. I am glad that we live in a country with all the resources for a fast recovery.  A country that even politically divided is still united when this type of event take place. Local governments were prepared to prevent and to create a faster recovery and solutions making us extremely blessed to live in America and live in Our City Hollywood.   Always here for you, Alex Alex Bruno is a top producer at RE/MAX 5 Star Realty for 12 years, and is currently a Top 1% Selling RE/MAX real estate owner/agent in South Florida and Number #1 in the City of Hollywood.
