The Olympia Union Gospel Mission (OUGM) began its work with the homeless and needy in 1995 through a street ministry outreach. Sandwiches and hot drinks were offered in an atmosphere of love and acceptance. Our goal was, and still is, to share God’s love in practical ways.

MISSION

The OUGM exists as an Evangelical Christian Rescue Mission, serving Thurston County, to share the good news of life in Jesus Christ by meeting the physical, mental and spiritual needs of individuals in crisis. The Mission is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization and does not receive government funding, but relies solely on the generous support of individuals, churches, businesses and private foundations to maintain services. All donations are tax-deductible.

OLYMPIA JAZZ SENATORS

Olympia Jazz Senators (OJS), founded by Norm Wallen in the fall of 2005, has become the premiere big band in Thurston County. OJS members hail from Florida to Alaska bringing a wealth of experience and expertise. Members include public school band directors, active and retired, as well as members of our Armed Forces, including the United States Army, Navy and Air Force Bands. This swinging ensemble performs classics of Glenn Miller, Buddy Rich, Count Basie, to the contemporary sounds of today. Drawn from a vast custom library, the Olympia Jazz Senators perform new compositions and arrangements by one of the Senators. No matter what the genre, the Olympia Jazz Senators present every tune with their own unique twist. Saxophone: Gary Scott (alto 1), Ninee P. Wolff (alto 2), Aaron Wolff (tenor), Rudy Draco (tenor), Derek Nelson (bari) Trumpet: Ben McDonald (lead) Barry Caldwell, Steve Ross, Rich Little Trombone: Peter Plumley (lead), Peter Klinzman, Mark Stout, Martin Woodruff (bass trombone) Rhythm Section: Tarik Bentlemasani (guitar), Rick Jarvela (bass), Steven Bentley (drums), Josh DiStefano (piano) Arranger: Don Neptun MUSIC DIRECTOR Tracey D. Hooker (Olympia Jazz Senator’s Director) is a Grammy Award winning musician and author of “Autobiography Of An Unknown Jazz Trumpeter” from the South Puget Sound area. He currently serves as Band Director at Nova School. Mr. Hooker is a graduate of Regents College (SUNY) and a 22 year veteran of the United States Navy Music Program. In addition to having performed with many notable touring bands such as the O’Jays, Temptations, Debbie Boone, to name a few, Tracey regularly performs with the Keith Henson Octet, Freddy Pink (70’s cover band), Life Center Church Orchestra, Purple Phoenix Orchestra and his own quartet, the Hook Me Up Band. Mr. Hooker maintains a trumpet studio in his home and is the trumpet artist for the Cannonball Music Company, along with an endorser of Marcinkiewicz mouthpieces. 7

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & PRODUCER Trained as a biochemist, Skip Steffen was involved in Laboratory Medicine at Providence St. Peter Hospital from 1970 to 2000. In 1995 Skip became a Board member of the Olympia Union Gospel Mission. He held the position until 2005 when he became Executive Director after retiring from St. Peter Hospital. The first Dental Benefit show was in 2003 when Skip was still on the Board and he was able to “just show up” and enjoy the Breath of Aire Choir performance. In 2004 Skip became part of the planning team and over the years has become more and more involved in the annual production. In 2011 Skip played the part of the monster in “Putting on the Ritz” and cavorting around the stage on stilts taught him that it was much safer to be behind the scenes than on stage as part of the cast. Providing our low income, un- or under-insured citizens in the greater Olympia community access to dental and other health care services has always been seen by Skip and the other Board members as an important role for the Mission. Over the years, both the types of performances in the show and the dental clinic services have undergone change, but both play an important role in the lives of Olympia area citizens. Skip has found the role of producer to be both very enjoyable and challenging. He wishes to express his sincere appreciation to the Olympia Jazz Senators and all the performers for their support and willingness to pull together to create yet again another great evening of entertainment for the Olympia audience.

BEHIND THE SCENES NO-FEE DENTAL CLINIC MANAGER Shelley Case has been a dental assistant for twenty-eight years, working in different specialties. She came to the Olympia Union Gospel Mission in 2010, and has been serving as the Dental Clinic Manager since 2017. “I am so thankful to God for giving me this opportunity. I love working for and with our volunteers and helping to serve our community.”

Plan ahead and mark your calendar for the next spectacular show presented by your talented dental community SATURDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2021 Don’t miss it! 9
