ODA 2011 Fall Festival The Oklahoma Dental Association held a welcome back barbecue for all OU dental students during the first week of the 2011 fall semester. The event was held outside the ODA building, picnic/barbecue style, in the

warm and inviting sunshine. Alexander & Strunk Inc. were also there to mingle with the students and show their support as well. This is an annual event the ODA holds for OU dentals students to show their support for us and to give the students a chance to meet and greet. It was a great way for the incoming DS1 class to get a chance to talk to the upperclassmen as well as get to know each other! The evening was filled with delicious BBQ and beverages and door prize drawings for those in attendance. Families were also invited and the kiddos seemed to have lots of fun jumping around in the bouncy castle! All in all, it was a very successful start to the new school year and a fun way to say goodbye to summer!

Pre-Dent Simulation Course- Fall 2011 The ASDA Pre-Dental Simulation Course is held twice a year for predental students that are interested in applying to dental school. For a fee, the pre-dents experience a small taste of what it is like to be a dental student. Breakfast was served in the morning followed by a short lecture on tooth anatomy and dental restorations. Then they waxed up a tooth on a die, took impressions of models, and learned about dental x-rays and dental instruments. During a provided lunch, the pre-dental students asked a panel of dental students questions about applying to

dental school, what dental school is like, and anything else they wanted to know. After lunch the pre-dents cut preps in plastic typodont teeth and filled them with amalgam and composite. The rest of the afternoon consisted of tours of the school and watching a demonstration of casting a gold crown. OU ASDA Vice President Heather Zweifel, DS3, did an excellent job heading up this event and many ASDA members volunteered to help out. The next Pre-Dent Simulation Course is scheduled for April 21, 2012.

In November 2011, ASDA members participated in “Pizza and Politics, an event to raise awareness about the role dentists and dental students play in political decisions at the state and national level. The Oklahoma Dental Association provided pizza for students and dentists. Dr. Krista Jones, Dr. Mark T. Hanstein and Dr. William Lee Beasely spoke about their roles in the Dental Political Action Committee. The

Pizza and Politics topics discussed included state funding for the loan reimbursement of rural dentists and the dental van that provides dental care to low-income Oklahoma residents.

THE

ODA Dentist Day at the Capitol

LIAIS LAIR ON

Gabe Luttrell (OU ASDA Legislative Liaison ’14) with OK State Representative Gary Banz This spring, dental students were invited to attend an evening reception as a part of Dentist Day at the Capitol. Students that attended were able to talk to legislators and dentists about the work they had done that day. The main topic discussed at the event was funding for the Oklahoma Dental Loan Repayment Program (ODLRP) and the Dental Van. The ODLRP was designed to increase dental care accessibility to underserved rural and metropolis areas by providing loan repayment assistance to licensed dentists for a 2-5 year period per dentist. This opportunity was a great way for ASDA members to be involved in and learn about the legislative system pertaining to dentistry.

Annual Session ASDA’s Annual Session is a national leadership conference that brings together ASDA leaders from all 61 US dental schools. Those that attended had access to vendors in order to form contacts for potential lunch & learns for their schools, listened to speakers addressing hot topics in dentistry and were able to interact with other ASDA chapters to exchange and discuss ideas. Awards are also given out each year for outstanding achievements by ASDA chapters and individuals. Some of the highlights of the trip included DS1 Daryn Lu presenting and fielding questions for a workshop: Tips on Working With Predentals, Jennifer Headrick recognized as Delegate of the Year, and Seth Brooks elected as

Most business is taken care of in the House of Delegates meeting where the delegates voted on the Executive Committee appointments and the various presented resolutions. Our OU representatives attended workshops and meetings all day and met with candidates for the Executive Committee. Aside from the 2012-2013 election of national ASDA leaders, updates where presented on addressing barriers to care, the American Dental Political Actions Committee (ADPAC), and upcoming changes to the NBDE Parts I and II. ASDA members that attended Annual Session were Jennifer Headrick ’13, Heather Zweifel ’13, Stephanie McCarty ’13, Seth Brooks ’14, Priyanka Kainthla ’14 and Daryn Lu ’15.

JUST FOR FUN You Know You’re In Dental School When... You have nightmares that all your teeth fall out.

You get a serious guilt trip if you go to bed without brushing your teeth.

You creepily collect jars of teeth in your locker and are very protective of these teeth...very protective.

You can’t help but daydream about fantasies involving your girlfriend/boyfriend and a dental chair.

You find empty composite cartridges, alligator clips, and wooden wedges of all sizes in your laundry, which by the way consists of solely scrubs and underwear.

The first thing you notice on a girl is her cusp size.

Caption This Photo! Have something funny to say about this photo? Send a caption to Diane Vincent via email Diane-Vincent@ouhsc.edu and the best/funniest ones will be featured in the next newsletter!

You have a test tomorrow but suddenly it is imperative that you clean the house, wash the dog, weed the garden, play Draw Something, etc.

Meme Time!

You suddenly develop oral habits you never had before.

When a slow week is having 2 exams and a quiz.

When an 88% on an exam is below the class average.

When you consider naming your kid G.V. Black.
