THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA

2018 Status Report

Mission The mission of the Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering is to provide our students with educational experiences which allow them the opportunity to develop technical competence and intellectual perspective to function effectively in and continue professional growth during their careers. These experiences occur primarily through research, innovative classroom instruction, lab experiences, and student mentoring.

Academic & Student Life Here at the Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering, it is our highest priority to ensure that each student is prepared for their future in the industry and is set on a path to carry on our tradition of excellence. Although MPGE, along with all the petroleum engineering schools across the country experienced a decline in undergraduate enrollment, our student grade point averages were on the rise, hitting their highest point within the last ten years. International student enrollment continues to increase this year as well. Our international students now make up 26% of our total undergraduate enrollment – seven percent higher than the previous year. Resident and non-resident enrollment remain consistent with residents of Texas and Colorado continually choosing the University of Oklahoma to pursue their studies in petroleum engineering. From the start of the petroleum engineering program at OU, we have been fortunate to have global representation, which has enhanced our programs and the experiences of our students.

Our students go above and beyond the requirements of their already rigorous academic schedules. MPGE students are highly involved in extracurricular activities and in giving back to their communities. This past year, our students made many commendable achievements. Here are some notable highlights: • At the 2017 ATCE conference in San Antonio, Texas, our PetroBowl team took 3rd place overall in the international competition. OU was the highest placed team from the United States. OU SPE took almost 50 students for a chance to meet, network and learn from industry leaders. Finally, OU SPE was recognized as an Outstanding Student Chapter. • At the 2018 SPE North American Student Symposium in February, OU’s PetroBowl team won first place in the PetroBowl North American Qualifier competition out of about 20 North American teams. They will now advance to the international competition at the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition held in Dallas, TX this fall. Team members were Son Dang, John Borer, Jaemin Jang, Dakota Dodge and Ashutosh Sharma. • MPGE students, Landon Wright, Najia Bilal, Ishank Gupta and Jack Borer, had the opportunity to travel to Edmonton, a city in Alberta, Canada, to participate in the Alberta Energy Challenge, a case competition that takes place over five days in Edmonton.

• At the Applied Science Conference held by the Houston Geological Society in November 2017, Petroleum Engineering graduate student, Ishank Gupta, won first place for his presentation on the water weakening phenomenon on shales. Another Petroleum Engineering graduate student, Zhi Ye, took second place for his presentation on shear stimulation and permeability evolution in shale fractures.

• In April, 2017, SPE International hosted their annual Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Social Responsibility Conference (HSSESR) in New Orleans, Louisiana where our team took second place in the HSSE Student Challenge. This competition allows students interested in the health, safety, security and environmental side of the oil and gas industry a chance to display their knowledge on HSSE topics. Team members were Sergio Gomez, Mitch Bull, Annie Shen, Gage Russell, Emily Ratliff and Shane Reddell. • Continuing their strong philanthropy tradition with regard to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, OU SPE was the top fundraiser for this year’s event with $11,232 raised for the charity. It was a long night but our students cheered each other on and made their presence known with a thirty foot purple derrick.

At the year’s end, the Mewbourne College of Earch and Energy held the Student and Alumni Awards banquet at the Sam Noble Museum where nearly 300 people attended the event. Dean Mike Stice welcomed the attendees, and then presented the Distinguished Alumni awards and the Distinguished Service award. Scholarships It is the goal of our department to relieve some of the financial burden for our students and their families by awarding scholarships. For the 2016-17 academic year, 209 MPGE students were awarded a total of $687,800 in scholarship funds. None of this would have been possible without the unfailing support and generosity of our alumni and industry friends. Thank you! Scholarship decisions are rooted in academic merit. Students must achieve a GPA of 3.2 or higher in order to qualify., and, year after year, MPGE students prove their excellence through the scholarships they attain. Those who are selected as Mewbourne Leadership Scholars (MLS) receive funding for four years of study in the program along with opportunities for internships with the Mewbourne Oil Company. MPGE also provides awards to National Merit Scholars who have chosen to study petroleum engineering at OU from among the many options made available to them. For each year they remain in the program, National Merit Scholars, will continue to receive $3,500 annually.

Graduation & Placement

In 1919, the first bachelor’s in Geological Engineering was granted by OU. Today, the Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering is thriving and leading the energy industry with groundbreaking research, collaboration, and, as always, producing the finest graduates to lead the industry into the future. During the Spring, Summer and Fall 2017 semesters, MPGE graduated: 147 B.S. Petroleum Engineering, 1, B.S. Geological Engineering, 30 M.S. Petroleum Engineering, 4 M.S. Natural Gas Engineering and Management and 6 Ph.D. Petroleum Engineering. Included in these numbers were seven students who graduated from our accelerated PE/MBA program that allows students to earn both a

bachelor’s in petroleum engineering and a master’s in business. We also offer an accelerated B.S./M.S. program in petroleum engineering at OU which allows student to obtain a bachelor’s and a master’s program in just five years.

There were 25 women who graduated from our programs in 2017, making up 17% of the graduating class. Again in 2017, our students faced a challenging hiring environment. In spite of this, 45% of our undergraduate students had secured employment after the Spring 2017 semester, and 32% had secured employment after the Fall 2017 semester. Many students chose to pursue further education. In the Spring of 2017, 24% of graduating B.S. students had accepted an offer from a graduate program. In the Fall of 2017, 27% had accepted an offer from a graduate program. In Spring 2017, Schlumberger hired the largest number of students from our graduating class. They were followed closely by Saudi Aramco and Mewbourne Oil Company. Despite the tough hiring market, starting salaries made an increase from prior years, especially for students graduating with degrees in STEM-related disciplines, according to the Society for Human Resource Management. A report by the National Association of Colleges and Employers stated that the average starting salary for engineering students was $66,097; a two percent rise from 2016.
