How to dazzle outdoors
Follow our simple steps and ensure your home outshines the neighbourhood
plan and prepare
It’s very easy to go overboard with your outdoor Christmas lighting. But the most effective displays are planned with the style and proportions of the property in mind. Take a drive around your neighbourhood for
inspiration and to ensure your home complements the surrounding streets. If everyone goes crazy for Christmas then there’s no reason not to join in. But in a more traditional area it may be best to stick to one style and colour of lighting. Measure the lengths you want to decorate to ensure you have enough bulbs
and check they all work before you set foot on a step ladder. If you’re using outdoor extension leads, match their colour to the environment (so no bright orange!). And if you’re worried about overloading your electrical circuits, invest in the latest LED designs and save pounds on energy bills.

start with strings
The most effective way to enhance the architectural details of your home is to hang strings of lights around its edges. Strings will also transform natural garden elements, such as hedges, bushes and trees, into sparkling ornamental features for the festive weeks. If you’ve been put off in the past by the hassle of running cables from the electrical sockets inside your house, don’t worry, the future of Christmas lighting is here. Just look out in store for the Durawise range of batterypowered LED lights. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use, each light set comes with a timer function that, when you activate, will switch on the lights for six hours then turn them off for 18 hours. They are the simplest way to create a stunning outdoor display. Durawise string lights give the choice of steady light or eight twinkle functions, and will run for 30 days on one set of three AA batteries.
Q: How many lights
do I need for my tree? A: Measure the tree height,
then use the following as a rough guide: 90cm – 120 lights 120cm – 120-180 lights 150cm – 180-240 lights 180cm – 240-360 lights 210cm – 360-480 lights 240cm – 480-720 lights 300cm – 720 lights

Make magic lanterns A coil of lights inside an outdoor lantern or vase can look magical
Enhance wreaths and garlands Your Christmas garland will look extra special if it sparkles
Add a centrepiece Durawise battery-operated lights are also ideal for use indoors

QA Q: Should I replace my old
lights with LEDs?
3 rd step
create a focal point
You’ll need an eye-catching feature that draws attention to create the ‘wow’ factor, and nothing beats an outdoor Christmas tree. Why not treat yourself to a more contemporary option this year and surprise your guests with our latest Cherry Blossom or Globe trees – perfect for adding a touch of magic to any dark corner inside or out. The Cherry Blossom trees feature pre-attached blossoms and have a much denser petal and LED saturation than others you will see. Both tree designs are supplied with a 10m lead wire that’s perfect for reaching the bottom of the garden.
Blue blossom tree (45cm) The beautiful blue of this blossom tree creates a cool, frosty feel £19.99
A: Most LED lights require around 90% less electricity than normal lights, which can add up to significant savings if you’re planning a big display. They also stay much cooler so they are safer. And because the bulbs are made of plastic, not glass, they are less likely to break when you are putting them up. Warm white globe tree (45cm) Bring a touch of sparkle with the warm glow of this globe tree £19.99 10 | BEAUTIFUL CHRISTMAS
add the final details
Now it’s time to have some fun adding the finishing touches. Every dark corner, raised plinth or step presents an opportunity to bring your outdoors to life. If you’re expecting young visitors, they’ll be captivated by our amazing range of illuminated acrylic characters and creatures. Or get creative with smaller strings of lights by coiling them in weather-proof glass or Perspex vases, lanterns or jars. LED Reindeer (105cm) The magical sight of this lit reindeer will melt even the hardest of hearts £99.99
LED Penguin (45cm) Despite his trip from the Antarctic to your garden, this penguin will not look out of place £39.99
LED Skiing snowman (28cm) This jolly LED Christmas character is bound to bring a touch of festive fun to any home or garden £39.99
LED Bear family (21cm) With this adorable family of polar bears on your doorstep, you're sure to enchant all who visit £39.99 BEAUTIFUL CHRISTMAS |

Weeping Spruce 7.5ft, pre-lit with 600 lights and feel-real branches ÂŁ349.00
Grown in Scotland by a small group of specialists, our real Christmas trees are produced by people who are passionate about nurturing the very best, freshest trees for your home. Pictured below is our buyer, Andy Bunker, with grower Euan Duff inspecting his wonderful crop of Fraser Firs, which are slightly narrower than the popular Nordmann Fir and give off a lovely scent. A DECADE OF CARE Gone are the days when the trees were cut from forestry plantations. Now Christmas trees are planted in straight lines, like soldiers, giving
plenty of space to control weeds and to shape and prune. It takes up to 10 years of careful tending to grow a tree for Christmas. Harvesting begins after around six years, then the trees are thinned out as they grow bigger, so it might take four more years before the field is cleared. NORDMANN FIR Our Nordmann Fir, with its soft dark green needles is still the most popular choice with most customers. All our trees are marked with the distinctive Needlefast Care label and a unique number so they can be traced back to the place where they were grown.

Feed with Baby Bio every week. Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera) These are jungle plants and will thrive in a warm room, out of direct
sunlight, placed on a saucer of gravel and water. Keep the soil moist when in flower, but after they have bloomed, reduce watering and place plants in a cool room. Poinsettias Poinsettias thrive in warm rooms where nights are not too cold. Water sparingly when the surface of the

In the winter garden These easy jobs will bring some seasonal sparkle outdoors • Plant up a winter pot with scented winter box (Sarcococca), cheerful violas, heathers, hardy evergreen ferns, sedges such as Carex, and ivy. • Pot up evergreen herbs, including thyme, sage and rosemary in a windowbox or in a planter on a windowsill. • Prune dormant deciduous shrubs and small trees; remove dead and diseased
stems, and then trim them into shape. • Plant spring bulbs, such as daffodils and tulips, up to Christmas, as long as the soil isn’t frozen or waterlogged. The flowers may bloom a bit later than expected but they should still appear next spring. • Buy winter-flowering scented shrubs, such as mahonia, witch hazel, and wintersweet. You can plant them in the ground or simply stand them on the patio and admire from indoors. BEAUTIFUL CHRISTMAS |
Winter bird watch
It’s important to feed the birds in your garden all year round and especially vital to keep feeders topped up during winter months
1. Ernest Charles Wilton bird table
(174cm high) Premium quality, made in the UK with a 15-year guarantee RRP £119.99 Special offer £99.99
s the weather gets colder, winter can be a tough time for wild birds. With food in short supply, they need extra help to get the energy necessary to stay warm. By providing rich, high-calorie foods, you’ll help them build up their reserves. When the weather is severe, you may need to top up bird feeders with nutritious foods twice a day if you can. Offer a regular supply of food, including goodquality peanuts, sunflower hearts and high-energy wild bird seed blends, such as the Ernest Charles wheat-free range. (The RSPB advises against putting out wheat and barley grains as they are only suitable for larger birds such as doves and pheasants). Moist suet pellets, suet balls or suet blocks and dried feeds, such as dried mealworms, will also help birds stay healthy. Look out in store for the Gardman range of mixes and seeds, along with a variety of feeders, nest boxes, bird tables and accessories. As natural sources of fresh water can become frozen over, it’s also important to provide a supply in a bird bath or water dish. And when feeding areas get busy, hygiene is paramount, so make sure you keep your wild bird feeders clear from debris.
