Otterbein Colors In 1891, Florence Cronise chaired the “Color Committee� to select school colors. The committee chose tan and cardinal, the colors of the Class of 1893. The May 1891 issue of Otterbein Aegis, the Otterbein newspaper from 1890 to 1917, announced the new colors flew marvelously during the annual field day.

The Mace and Flambeau The mace was commissioned by former president Lynn W. Turner to represent the educational authority of Otterbein. The flambeau was also commissioned by former president Turner to represent the light of learning bestowed by Otterbein.

Commencement Speaker Meg Crofton Meg Crofton serves as president, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Operations, United States and France, and is responsible for providing strategic oversight of the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, Disneyland Resort in California and Disneyland Paris.

She most recently served as the fourth president of the Walt Disney World Resort, overseeing a workforce of more than 66,000 Cast Members at the world’s premiere vacation destination. During her tenure as president, Crofton oversaw the opening of New Fantasyland – the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history, and Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, which offers family suites. She helped create the vision for the transformation of Downtown Disney into “Disney Springs” – a multi-year project that represents the largest expansion in its history. Crofton was also at the forefront of the Resort’s long-term focus on the next generation of the Guest experience, which led to the development of MyMagic+ and other initiatives.

Throughout her 32-year Disney career, Crofton has held a wide range of executive positions in Hotel Operations, Convention Sales and Services, and Human Resources. She also played key leadership roles in the opening of both Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.

During her time in Central Florida, Crofton held several significant roles in the local community. She was appointed to the board of trustees at the University of Central Florida; served on the Florida Council of 100, a group that promotes statewide economic growth in Florida; and as chair of the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission. She also served on the boards of the Central Florida Commission on Homelessness, Orlando Health, Rollins College and the Executive Committee of the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Under her leadership, Walt Disney World set new records for contributions to Heart of Florida United Way, and was a visible supporter of the new Amway Center, the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center, Citrus Bowl, Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida and Florida Hospital. Crofton continues to invest a great deal of her time in Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Cast Members, whom she refers to collectively as, “the heart and soul of our resorts and our Disney difference.” She has mentored and helped to develop thousands of Cast Members at all levels through her “One Leader’s Journey” and “Shaping Thinking” classes, as well as a ground-breaking series of in-depth safety discussions attended by more than 8,000 Walt Disney World leaders.

Crofton attended Rollins College and earned both her bachelor’s degree in marketing and her MBA from Florida State University.

Candidates for degrees Due to publishing time constraints, degrees and honors listed in this program were based upon grades earned through January Term and projected completion of Spring Semester coursework taken on and/or away from campus. Thus, the commencement program information is not considered official. The degrees and honors listed will actually be conferred only upon those who satisfactorily meet all requirements as stipulated in the Otterbein University Course Catalog.

Summa Cum Laude–An undergraduate student who has attained a cumulative grade point average of 3.950 or better is graduated “Summa Cum Laude.” This designation appears on the diploma and permanent transcript record.

Magna Cum Laude–An undergraduate student who has attained a cumulative grade point average of 3.800 to 3.949 is graduated “Magna Cum Laude.” This designation appears on the diploma and permanent transcript record.

Cum Laude–An undergraduate student who has attained a cumulative grade point average of 3.600 to 3.799 is graduated “Cum Laude.” This designation appears on the diploma and permanent transcript record.

With University Honors–Honors students were accepted into the Honors Program on the basis of outstanding academic ability, have completed the sequence of Honors courses, and have written an Honors Thesis. This designation appears on the diploma and permanent transcript record. A student graduating “With Honors” wears a silver medallion with the academic regalia.

With Distinction–An undergraduate student who has satisfactorily completed an approved program of independent study and research, who has submitted a thesis, and has passed written and oral examinations in the field studied, is graduated “With Distinction.” This designation appears on the diploma and permanent transcript record. A student graduating “With Distinction” wears a bronze medallion with the academic regalia.

With Departmental Honors–An undergraduate student who has attained a grade point average of 3.700 or better in all major subject field grades is graduated “With Departmental Honors.” A student graduating “With Departmental Honors” wears a lapel pin with the academic regalia.

Academic Costume A commission appointed in 1959 by the American Council on Education prescribes a code for academic costume that dictates two components of dress: caps and gowns.

The first component, dealing with caps, allows the mortarboard or Oxford type cap. Occasionally, the Cambridge model, a soft cap resembling a beret, is worn. Either type is correct as long as it is black and of an appropriate material, except that velvet is reserved for doctors.

The tassel worn with the cap has three variations. First, it may be black for any degree. Second, it may be in the color of the major field of learning in which the degree was granted. Third, a tassel of gold metallic may be worn by doctors and governing officials of institutions. Some schools make a ceremony of switching the tassel from the right to the left at the moment the degree is awarded as a substitute for individual hooding of candidates.

The second main element of academic costume concerns the gown which should be all black, aside from variations in materials and fullness. The bachelor’s gown falls in straight lines from a fairly elaborate yoke. Its distinguishing characteristic is the long, pointed sleeves. A master’s gown is distinguished by arc-shaped panels on the long or short sleeves. The doctor’s gown is an elaborate costume marked by velvet panels down the front and around the neck as well as by three bars of the same material on the bell-shaped sleeves. It is cut much fuller than the other gowns and, unlike them, may be ornamented in color. Both the paneling and the sleeve bars may show the area in which the degree was awarded.

A picture of each graduate will be taken at the time he or she crosses the stage and is presented a diploma. In mid-June, Grad Images will automatically send a proof and order form to all graduates. All orders received by July 1 will be delivered by August 1. Late orders will be accepted until December 31. There is no obligation to purchase pictures or to respond to Grad Images correspondence.
