DON’T SWALLOW ANOTHER DOSE UNTIL YOU READ THIS REPORT Dr. Doris Rapp, M.D warns all her patients about falling for the “Cholesterol Hoax”. Dr. Rapp is unforgiving of those who prescribe statin drugs and says “Over half the folks on statin drugs get coronary artery disease anyway, plus these drugs set them up for Alzheimer’s, impotence, suicide, cancer and an avalanche of druginduced nutrient deficiencies that propel them toward accelerated aging.” YES you read that right, CANCER! Research shows Statins cause non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD); a condition which in time may cause cancer. And if that weren’t bad enough, research also points out that statin drugs WIPE OUT Co-Q10 levels, a vital nutrient without which the heart can literally STOP BEATING.

SO WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I AM CONCERNED ABOUT TAKING STATIN DRUGS? Well if you plan on being alive next year, your best option is to look into the groundbreaking research published by the International Journal of Cardiology and the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology. They’ve uncovered, a new citrus extract that just might be your TRUMP CARD in the fight against heart disease. This extract known as BERGAMOT BPF performed BETTER at improving cholesterol panels than Crestor (the leading statin) – yet does NOT cause a single side effect. In fact, unlike Statins, BERGAMOT BPF actually preserves your CO-Q10 levels while lowering total cholesterol, LDL’s, triglycerides and INCREASING HDL’s. But if that wasn’t enough, BERGAMOT BPF will also maintain elasticity in your arteries while reducing your arterial inflammation. Does that sound too good to be true? The good news is you aren’t the first to hear about BERGAMOT BPF , I’ve meticulously gathered feedback from clients to see what their doctors have been finding: “When my cholesterol reached 280, I commenced taking Bergamot, which I obtained from my pharmacist. After taking Bergamot for just one month, my cholesterol dropped significantly. Since then it has been dropping slowly, and consistently, recently being measured at 225. I never thought my cholesterol would drop 55 points without having to take prescriptions! I feel really terrific about his recommendation, especially since my HDL has also increased. I am absolutely elated.” – Barbara R, Acworth

“It took several bottles but when I first started [Bergamot] my ‘bad’ cholesterol labs was 190 and 240. Even with forgetting to take this here and there my numbers went down to 115 and 163 for my last cholesterol labs. This was well worth the try for me, so I told my sister about Bergamot and she’s now taking it.” – Charles H, Marietta So let’s briefly review what’s going to happen when you start taking BERGAMOT BPF ; in just 6 short weeks your total cholesterol [32%] and LDL’s [40%] will come crashing down lower than you could with a healthy diet, your HDL’s will soar [43%] higher than WITH ANY DRUG YOU’VE TRIED and higher than with exercise, your triglycerides will be escorted [42%] out of your body from your new healthy liver, your arteries will be begin to open like your cardiologist scraped plaques off of them, and your CO-Q10 levels will raise to healthy levels, helping your heart to pump more efficiently and flooding your body with youthful energy! And let’s not forget the best part of what will happen after you’ve been on BERGAMOT BPF …at your next cholesterol reading your cardiologist will do a double-take after seeing pristine numbers on your chart and being forced to hand you a clean bill of health WITHOUT taking statins. And don’t be alarmed if your doctor doubts what you’re doing because frankly, they don’t see such dramatic results with prescription drugs. How satisfying will it be to drive straight past your local drugstore and head to the golf course or drive-up movies instead? You’ll never find peace-of-mind with the scare of liver cancer, cardiac arrest or Diabetes from taking Statins, and you’ll never rest easy trying some fad diet (or exaggerated internet miracle) and hoping for the best. You’ll only know what it’s like to put the fear of heart-attacks behind you for good once you start taking BERGAMOT BPF . And there’s no need to waste time being skeptical about all this because we GUARANTEE these results for you! Get BERGAMOT BPF today for just $44.98 and keep it up for 90 days, if you don’t get great news at your following checkup, simply return your empty bottles for a hassle-free refund of every penny you’ve spent. If you’re interested in living a longer, healthier life get BERGAMOT BPF today and say goodbye to Statin drugs.

Our Town

Mr. President by Mark Orler

If I were to write a book on what a person could do to become the most hated individual in their neighborhood it would consist of one sentence, “Do everything you can to get elected as your homeowner’s association president, and then just wait.” Two years ago I made the mistake of attending our annual homeowner’s association meeting because the board was considering bankrupting the association to pay for some insane construction project and I thought that was a bad idea. So like an idiot when they opened the floor for comments I stood up during the meeting and said, “I think bankrupting the association for this project is a bad idea.”

The Leaders in Property Management

Next thing I know, I am voted in as a representative on the board for our area and in a blur, elected as president of the whole association. Literally within the span of two hours I went from being “the nice guy on the corner lot with all the kids” to “the jerk that is telling me I can’t park my car on cinder blocks in my front yard.”

I have kind of felt a commiseration with our current President of the United States in this way. I know he spent millions of dollars and a year of his life campaigning for the office he currently holds as opposed to just standing up and saying, “Really? No one else is willing to do this!” But I can’t help but feel, based purely on his tweets and actions, that he never truly wanted the job. Oh sure, he may be the most likeable guy in the world, but now you would think he was Satan incarnate if you were to read, click, watch or generally pay attention to any media available; all simply based on his job change. Just like our President, I have been threatened with lawsuits, physical harm, slandered and generally abused by my fellow residents simply for requesting that they do things like take the time to pick up after their dog once it makes a “deposit” on someone else’s property, per the Covenants mind you. Yes, Mr. Smith, I am speaking to you and that little poo-maker you call a Yorkie! And just like our President I have even been threatened with impeachment by one “neighbor” that quickly dropped his petition when he realized that NOBODY in his or her right mind was willing to replace me. By the way Mr. Smith, feel free to ‘visit’ his yard on your daily stroll with Chompers (wink-wink). The rest of the book that I would write would have detailed instructions on how to remove toilet paper from trees, broken eggs from doors, soap from windshields and how to regrow grass that has been killed by gasoline spelling out “you suc” from your front lawn. I guess gas cans don’t come with spell check?

The last page of the book would be a quotation of the Golden Rule with one postscript, “do unto others as you would have done to you….then duck.” Mr. Smith knows how to throw.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) is an exciting new treatment option for both hair loss and facial rejuvenation. Using the latest in scientific trends, this innovative therapy is taking the world of dermatology into a new age of not only more effective, but safer ways to help you feel and look your best. Hair loss occurs in both men and women and can be frustrating. Individuals using PRP therapy have reported more than satisfactory hair growth in as little as two to three months and full hair restoration in about six months’ time. If you are looking for an organic, non-invasive way to treat your wrinkles, dark spots, and signs of aging, then PRP may be perfect for you as a facial treatment. The platelets promote collagen growth, which provide a more youthful, healthier appearing skin increasing the tone of the skin therefor reducing wrinkles and scars. The treatment is quite simple and non-invasive. It involves collecting a small amount of your blood just as when receiving blood work, and spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the blood platelets. The collected platelets are then injected back into the scalp or face to stimulate healing and regeneration. The platelets are important because they contain various natural growth factors that promote the growth and repair of the hair and skin. Dr. Chilukuri, a world-renowned dermatologist sees an exciting potential for PRP therapy. “PRP therapy has shown great increases in both hair density and hair follicle thickness when treating hair loss along with the ability to increase skin texture and provide skin rejuvenation for the face and scalp. Those patients of mine who have decided on the treatment have come back highly satisfied with their results.” Not only has it been shown to be extremely effective, but more importantly it has shown to be very safe to each person. Since it is their own blood that is used, there is no risk of rejection by the body or transmission of blood borne diseases such as HIV or Hepatitis C. The most commonly reported side effect was minor localized pain to the injection site.

Microneedling stimulates the skin’s natural ability to repair itself. As we age and battle chronic skin condition such as acne, the natural architecture of our skin deteriorates. This deterioration leads to fine lines, wrinkles, large pores, and uneven skin texture. Microneedling comfortably creates thousands of micro-injuries in the skin to trigger the body’s natural wound healing process. Combines with PRP, the two therapies work in synergy to create a treatment that delivers accelerated results capable of bringing better results than each part alone. Results may be seen immediately following treatment with more results showing over the next four to six weeks. The largest of the results will occur over the next six months as your body naturally treats itself while utilizing the PRP to heal. If you or someone you know is seeking a safe, non-invasive treatment that utilizes your own blood for effective hair or skin rejuvenation, then PRP therapy may be perfect you. With very minimal recovery time after the procedure, you will be looking, and feeling, like the best version of you.

Dr. John Kayal specializes in skin care for all ages. If you would like to learn more about Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy or another procedure, please call Kayal Dermatology and Skin Cancer Specialists to set up a consultation at 770-426-7177

Our Town

by Tara Hanover

October... the month of tricks, treats and frightening tales. In honor of this month, I have a very scary story to share with you. Hold on to your socks and put down your breakfast, this is a doozy! As most of you all know by now if I am wearing make-up I am wearing lashes…with me- it’s all or nothing. There is no in between. So in mid June or so I started noticing my eye was feeling a bit itchy. I had just purchased new lash glue so I immediately blamed it on that. I then took a break from lashes for about a month and it got better. August came, the lashes were back on and so was the itch but next came the red puffy next step? Well (of course) I went straight to “Dr. Google”! I typed “red, itchy, swollen eyelids at the lash line” then hit enter. Instantly and to my shock and horror LASH MITES popped up! WHAT? ( Dr. Google goes straight to worse case scenario) Of course I jump right on the crazy train and just knew I had them...I called my doctor immediately for an appointment. They could see me in 2 days. TWO DAYS! It seemed like an eternity. Are you kidding me, I have to live with tiny bugs in my eyes for 2 days??? I went back to “Dr. Google” after all he is always on call. I then read how they could lay 12 eggs per hair follicle...I AM DYING, emotionally!!!! He also said that I could treat it at home with tea tree oil. Got it- tea tree oil. I ran to the bathroom and instantly blinded myself with tea tree shampoo (DO NOT DO THIS). Then he said they come out at night. So of course I felt them partying all over my face ALL NIGHT LONG for 2 LONG NIGHTS! Finally, I walk- actually run into my optometrist office and tell her I’m exhausted, grossed out and desperate! I tell her that I feel sure I have lash mites. I could even feel them running all over my face as I tried to sleep... She looked at me, calm as a cucumber and with a smirk as she said, “ You DO NOT have lash mites”. She had not even used her microscope, I felt sure she was wrong...she took me into her exam room to appease me. After a long extensive look she said, “NO you do not have lash mites. You don’t even have an allergic reaction.” I was shocked! If not lash mites then what? I basically had a friction burn. I put lashes on in the same place on my eyelid then ripped them off- over and over and over. This is very similar to putting a Band-Aid on in the same place and ripping it off every single day. What a relief! LASH MITES-HOLY SMOKES WHAT ARE THEY? *Demodex is a genus of tiny mites that live in or near hair follicles of mammals. Around 65 species of Demodex are known. Two species live on humans: Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis, both frequently referred to as eyelash mites. P.S. They are harmless. HOW DO YOU GET THEM? Some website and doctors say we all have them, hanging out in our lashes everyday. Other sites say you can get them if you have bacteria around your eyes from not washing off your make-up or poor hygiene. They are also found in the lashes of people with a compromised immune system. DR. ERICA SHAH’S TIPS: • Wash your eyes morning and night with “No More Tears” baby wash. • Use a warm compress over the eyes to loosen up make-up. Simply run a washcloth under warm water and then soak the eyes for about 30 seconds.

• Use traditional non-oily eye make-up remover pads, unscented baby wipes, or cotton pads dipped in cold milk and swipe across the eyelids, then downward. Avoid swiping upward as this can loosen up the under eye skin over time. • Avoid using facial cleanser to clean the eyelid area due to the eyelid area having thinner skin and requiring products formulated with milder ingredients. • Always remove eye make up before washing the rest of your face. • Coconut oil is a great natural moisturizer to use on and around the eyelids and has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. Coconut oil can give relief to eczema patches around the skin if traditional treatment (steroids) is not working. Going Gear is located in the heart of Smyrna and a familiar landmark to the folks that live and work in our area. During the summer of 2008, Marshall Hoots created Going Gear with a single product category: Blank firesteel rods. In the spring of 2009, he added flashlights to his online store. The first brick and mortar store opened in 2010 with 1000 square feet that they quickly filled up with great gear! In 2013 Going Gear moved to it’s present location at 1302 Concord Road SE in Smyrna. Going Gear is the ultimate home to all of your camping, back packing and survival gear. What are blank fire steel rods and how did they help you make Going Gear what it is today? Fire steel rods (also called ferro rods) are small metal rods made out of an alloy called ferrocerium or mischmetal. When struck with a hard edge like a dedicated scraper or the edge of a knife, they will throw off a shower of sparks used to light a fire. I was trying to find some ferro rods for my personal use while my day job was running the online business for another outdoor company. I had trouble sourcing the rods as a customer, so I thought that selling them myself and becoming the source was a good idea. The company I worked for at the time okayed my selling them on the side, so those were the first products at Going Gear. What is the craziest request that you’ve gotten from a customer? The only ones I can think of probably aren’t very appropriate for a family friendly magazine. Why should our readers check out your You Tube videos? We sell premium gear that is often priced beyond what most people consider an impulse buy, so I make the videos to show what you get for that higher price. For instance, we stock over a thousand flashlight models and showing what they can do at night and how they work helps people understand the products’ capabilities compared to the light sitting in their junk drawer or available at a mass retailer. A product that you carry and every “OUR TOWN” reader should own? A good flashlight because no matter where you are, it will eventually be dark. Try carrying a flashlight separate from the one on your phone and you will be surprised at how often you use it. The same goes for a quality pocket knife.

By Eliana Ocheseanu , The Skin Whisperer So you want to get serious about skin care, but with so many brands out there that promise eternal youth, how will you know if you are making the right decision? Finding the Holy Grail products that cut down your prep time, restore your skin to its youthful appearance and keep it hydrated all year long is not an easy job, even for an esthetician. To simplify your search look at the active ingredients and make sure this is what your skin needs before making a decision. There are hundreds of great ingredients but the following five are the most used ingredients by any esthetician I know.

Hyaluronic Acid

From its scientific discovery in the early 1900s to overtaking the cosmeceutical market around 2010, hyaluronic acid (HA) has made an indelible and important mark on the conversation of skin health and the fight against skin aging. This molecule is one of the most hydrophilic molecules found in nature and exists internally in all living things. Although the molecule size of HA has a wide variety of benefits, the moisture-attracting action also benefits the lower layers of the epidermis helping to plump and hydrate the skin from within. Although HA is found throughout the human body, almost 50% of HA exists in the skin. Naturally, HA has a short life, approximately one to three days, so the body must be constantly replenishing its stores of HA to support skin elasticity as well as many other critical biological processes within the body.

With age the HA levels in the epidermis are dramatically reduced. This leads to surface dehydration and more apparent fine lines and wrinkles making topical suppleme¬ntation even more important to the health, function and appearance of aging skin.

During the past decade, peptides have taken on a growing prominence in the skin care category. They’ve become so popular, in fact, that countless skin care products proudly feature them on their ingredient lists. Peptides are biologically active compounds that closely resemble proteins and are classified according to their molecular length. Therefore, you’ll often encounter terms such as dipeptides—two amino acids; tripeptides—three; tetrapeptides—four; pentpeptides—five and so on. Peptides reduce inflammation, enhance antioxidant defense mechanisms and even regulate bodily functions. In skin care formulations, three types of peptides are used, including: • Signal peptides increase production of new collagen while decreasing the breakdown of existing collagen. • Neurotra¬nsmitter peptides limit muscle contraction and, thus, are said to mimic the effects of botulinum toxin. • Carrier peptides stabilize and deliver trace elements necessary for wound-healing and enzymatic processes. Given that signs of skin aging, including fine lines and wrinkles, are caused by a breakdown of collagen and elastin, the abilities of these peptides are the perfect match for skin care formulations. The downside is that to be effective, peptides must be utilized in appropriate concentr¬ations. Unfortun¬ately, ingredient concentr¬ations within a formulation are rarely disclosed on the label. Given the generally high cost of peptides, some manufacturers use them in concentr¬ations below those utilized in scientific research or recommended by the peptide manufacturer. Because of this, it is important to choose a peptide product wisely.

In a market that is flooded with so-called miracle products, it has become increasingly difficult for skin care professionals and their clients to separate the scientific wheat from the marketing chaff. However, despite the product fads and buzzwords, one ingredient family remains the gold standard in anti-aging, and with good reason. Retinoids are some of the most efficacious ingredients proven to stimulate fibroblasts, promoting collagen and elastin production to significantly reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Backed by decades of clinical research, retinol and its derivatives remain the closest thing skin care products have to a fountain of youth.

HERE’S A SOBERING FACT: MORE THAN 45,000 CHILDREN EXPERIENCE HOMELESSNESS EACH YEAR IN GEORGIA. Granted this isn’t exactly a secret, but I had no idea the number was so high and it feels like such an invisible statistic to me. Most of us are fortunate enough to not have had to stare this demoralizing and heartbreaking issue down and climb the steep (and not always straight) road back to health and recovery. The Center for Children & Young Adults located in Marietta believes that every child deserves a safe place to sleep and their mission is to provide shelter, food and clothing to Metro Atlanta’s homeless youth and young adults who have been abused, abandoned, neglected or at risk. The CCYA is a part of the State of Georgia’s foster care system. Director, Kimberly Borna, calls CCYA Cobb County’s best-kept secret, which is definitely not their intention. We met with Kimberly and her staff last month to learn more about their organization and what we all can do to make a difference. The Center for Children and Young Adults operates three programs on their campus: Another Chance, Open Gate, and Life Works.

Another Chance provides shelter and housing for boys from ages 12 to 16 with 10 available beds on campus. The older boys may be eligible to work off campus, attend GED Prep study courses, and also may participate in Graduated Independence Plans (GIP) to build independence skills. All of the boys receive weekly on-site individual therapy, support groups, Title 1 Tutoring services and Life Skills workshops. They also do their own laundry, clean their rooms and bathrooms and help with chores for the common areas.

Open Gate provides 9 beds for girls aged 12-16. There is always a waiting list for the Open Gate girls’ home. The girls learn to grocery shop, cook meals with volunteers and campus chefs. CCYA has partnered with Cobb Master Gardeners and the campus garden produced 1000 pounds of produce this past year from gardens that have been planted and worked on the grounds. The kids are learning to appreciate the “farm to table” concept, the work and care that go into it, and they are also grateful for fresh foods and vegetables.

Life Works provides transitional housing for youth from ages 17-20. At age 18, each resident must sign themselves into the Independent Living Services (ILS) program. This program includes their basic needs of shelter, food, clothing assistance, as well as, educational assistance and support in earning a high school diploma or GED. Life Works focuses on helping youth succeed in life skills domains: work life, housing and money management, work and study skills, home life, career planning social relationships, communication, self-care, and daily life.

school last year and 4 of them enrolled in college this fall. Currently 13 seniors attend Cobb County high schools (Osborne, McEachern, Smitha, Pebblebrook and Marietta High School). Fourteen students have been recognized as Honor Students this year, as well. It’s amazing to see these kids succeed because most of them have experienced chronic trauma resulting in PTSD and other co-occuring mental health disorders and they end up here because there is really nowhere else to go. We try to give them a fresh start with as much support as possible from our staff, the community and generous outside donations.” These are triumphant accomplishments and the staff is filled with pride. CCYA is currently home to 4 frisky four legged friends that have been rescued and trained to serve as Therapy Dogs. Resident top dogs, Cody, Milleigh, Teddy, and Dallas provide so much more than therapy to the youth at CCYA and as you can imagine, many smiles from everyone who comes in contact with them.

What Can We Do to Help Make a Difference? CCYA has been blessed with many kind hearts and donations from individuals and organizations, but the kids have so little and there never seems to be enough to go around. An expansion for a limited amount of beds is in the works. They have partnered with the James M. Cox Foundation, Atlanta Braves Foundation, The Circle for Children Break Through Fellowship Church, Cumberland Community Church, Cobb EMC Community Foundation, DPR Construction, Warner Architectural Associates, NorthStar Psychological Services, The Cobb Chamber of Commerce and many more caring organizations. Donations of any size are appreciated and Kimie Tinsley, Director of Youth Activities and Volunteer services, coordinates volunteer services at CCYA.

The Pajama Pants Challenge November is National Homeless Youth Awareness Month and for the third year in a row the CCYA will roll out their Pajama Pants Challenge. This program encourages local schools, PTAs, and civic groups to designate a day in November to donate $1.00 to wear their favorite pajama pants. Worksheets for classroom activities and homework assignments are available in the School Challenge Kit. Kimberly Borna said, “The Pajama Pants Challenge has been successful for us. We have found that the youth in our communities love to give back and this is such a great way for them to do it and support other kids in Cobb.” They plan to post group photos of participants on their Facebook page to share the love and generosity of Cobb County kids.

LAST NOVEMBER THE FOLLOWING SCHOOLS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED THE CAMPAIGN: - Timber Ridge Elementary raised $521 that funded high school Graduation portraits, cap, gowns and fees for 5 seniors. - Kemp Elementary raised $348 that was used to purchase 200 rolls of toilet paper and 15 Twin Mattress Pads/Covers - Sope Creek Elementary raised $1285 that funded 3 Chromebooks for “After School Title 1 Tutoring”. - Murdock Elementary raised $825 that funded 21 twin sheet/pillow case sets & 35 large containers of laundry detergent.

Boys and girls that arrive at CCYA are referred through social services, law enforcement, schools and other community service providers. Most of them always have a past impacted by severe poverty, child abuse, domestic violence, and substance abuse. The youth that CCYA serves are in need of shelter, treatment care, and supervision because their parents or caregivers are either unwilling, homeless, incarcerated, suffer from addiction/mental illness or are deceased. Their length of stay depends on resources and placement option available to them.

- Westside Elementary raised $370 that funded 54 bed pillows and 17 bath mats.

On my visit to CCYA, last month, Jennifer La Braque, Development & Grants Management Officer, offered to give me a tour of the campus. As we made our way through the residential buildings she proudly described some of the recent success stories to come out of CCYA, “Five seniors graduated from high

- Walton High School raised $500 that purchased 18/twin comforter/sham sets - Primrose of Woodstock raised $1000 that funded 50 haircuts for boys and 36 haircuts for girls. - Cherokee Charter Academy raised $500 that funded 110 individually wrapped after school and weekend snacks, 150 half pint carton of mils and 33 jumbo bags of cereal.

Did You Know? The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that 1.3 million children in our country live without homes. The Center for Children & Young Adults are helping youth and young people to defy the odds. Recent findings from the Pew Research Institute report that youth turning 18 and leaving shelter homes to venture out on their own are struggling and this is why their program is so essential -• About 6,000 of these youth end up homeless each year • One in four will be incarcerated within the first two years after they leave shelter care; • More than 20 percent will become homeless at some time after age 18; • Approximately 58% had a high school degree at age 19, compared to 87% of a national comparison group of non-sheltered youth; and • Of youth who aged out of youth shelter care that are older than 25, less than 3% earned their college degrees, compared with 28% of the general population. We also believe every child deserves a chance and encourage you to help make a difference in the lives of these children. Giving can be the greatest gift that one receives. Magic ingredients changing the approach to anti-ageing (Continued from page 16)

Vitamin C Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is essential to the formation of collagen the most abundant protein in the body. Also, since vitamin C is water-soluble, it is able to destroy free radicals before they can reach the cellular membrane. Studies show that the correct formulations of Vitamin C and Vitamin A, can reverse skin changes in both photoaging (sun damage) and chronological aging. Vitamin C is essential to the formation of collagen the most abundant protein in the body. Also, since Vitamin C is water-soluble, it is able to destroy free radicals before they can reach the cellular membrane. Co-Enzyme Q10 Although its value for general health and nutrition is rather well known, Co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is s a relative newcomer to the skin care industry. CoQ10 is abundant in younger skin helping to produce biological energy (ATP) inside the cells. This helps your skin stay healthy and repair damage caused by sun or other external trauma. It also acts as a vitamin, protecting your skin from free radical damage. Under perfect conditions, the body can produce as much CoQ10 as it needs. However, various factors, such as aging, stress and some medications, can lower the levels of CoQ10 in the body. As a result, the ability of cells to withstand stress and regenerate declines. Unfortunately, the levels of CoQ10 in the body almost inevitably decline with age. In fact, CoQ10 is regarded as one of the most accurate biomarkers of aging. A topical form of CoQ10 will help replenish some of the decreasing levels in skin after your 30’s. This will keep your skin healthier and will help promote collagen production to prevent deep lines and wrinkles. I am sure we will be seeing more and more of CoQ10 in years to come. I hope this will help narrow down your selection of magic potions, and remember, an ounce of prevention is worth five pounds of care. Eliana has over 20 years experience in skin care. Our Town

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Our neighborhood is filled with children, big and small running around and laughing in their costumes. When it comes to dogs, this is a holiday many of them would rather pass on and move straight to Thanksgiving! To our dogs, Halloween is when humans look weird, the doorbell will not quit ringing and their normal environment changes and all of this happens in the dark! Halloween is enough to send most dogs running for the hills! This year, we offer a few tips to keep your pup safe and happy when the scary skeletons roam your neighborhood.

choice is to have someone sit outside your home and hand out candy. This is the option we choose and it gives us the chance to interact with all our neighbors, see the costumes and make new friends. Make a party of it, bring some chairs, a cooler, your candy and let the doorbell have the night off. Another option is to board them.

3) Costumes: OK - I know, the costumes for dogs can be really funny and cute. Dressing the Dachshund up as a hotdog is hilarious, no matter who you are! But some dogs are not really fashion focused and may not enjoy the extra attention a costume gets from strangers. Some dogs will panic, get scared or try to eat the costume off. Skip the costume if your pup doesn’t seem to enjoy looking like Yoda or your favorite Avenger.

Gas LogsEtc., Inc. 1) Candy Safety: Everyone knows that dogs cannot have chocolate, but another very dangerous candy additive is xylitol. Xylitol is a sweetener added to many sugar-free gums, baked goods and candies and it is very dangerous to your dog. This chemical can cause damage to the pancreas and liver and, in some cases, the additive can be fatal to them. Signs of exposure to these toxic substances include vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, bruising and lethargy. Keep all candy and other goodies elevated and away from your dog and teach your children to never feed candy to dogs. If you suspect your dog has ingested chocolate, candy wrappers, xylitol or any other candy, see your veterinarian immediately. Do not wait to see signs of toxicity as waiting may place your dog’s health at risk.

4) Children: Halloween brings children, lots and lots of them. Now is not the time to work on

Fido and his lack of affinity for children. Even if your dog likes children, he may not like children in costumes or a mask, with glow sticks in the dark, running and screaming. If your dog shows signs of stress, or has in the past, leave them at home. If you have a child or children to watch, maybe taking Fido along should be skipped this year. Let’s face it, dividing your attention between children and the family dog can be challenging and lead to trouble just when you take your eyes off one or the other.

5) Decorations: Second to Christmas, Halloween decorations are my favorite! Pumpkins, scary

witches and bones, smoke machines and flameless candles round out my list. However, be sure that you think of your dog and her safety when decorating. Glass and plastic decorations should be elevated and electrical cords hidden out of sight from curious teeth. Any decoration that seems to frighten your dog, or cause a little too much curiosity, should be avoided. While it may seem funny that your dog jumped in the air at the skeleton dancing, these types of negative experiences can short drive manifest into serious behavior issues that no owner wants to see inJust theiradog. Enjoy the holiday and decorate fully, but make sure you keep your beloved furry companion in mind! from West Cobb

2) Doorbell: We all know the sound that sends many dogs into orbit: ding-dong!!! The doorbell

rings over and over on Halloween, so what is an owner to do? You have a few options. Place your dog as far away from the noise as you can and provide them with music or a television on, maybe tuned to the Dog TV channel. Give them a special chew and let them relax in peace. Another

We hope you have a safe and fright filled Halloween!

According to recent figures from the USDA, termites damage approximately 600,000 homes in the U.S. each year. It is estimated that U.S. residents spend nearly $5 billion annually to control termites and re- 1 pair damage. To make matters worse, Georgia is one of 8 states in the U.S. with the greatest amount of 6 termite damage to residences. 7 Very few lenders currently require a purchaser/borrower to obtain a termite letter prior to purchasing a 8 home. The same applies to a termite bond. However, that does not mean it is not wise to inspect for 11 active or previous infestation of termites or other wood destroying organisms during the process of13 buying a home. 14 It is important to note that all lenders will require a home have a recent termite letter (now called a Wood 15 Infestation Report) in order to qualify for a VA loan. The letter must show that there is no active infes16 tation of wood destroying organisms. If there is damage caused by termites, it may need to be repaired 18 prior to closing, depending on the severity. 19 In addition to the Wood Infestation Report above, many people opt for a termite bond. This is effectively a warranty and service provided by a pest control company to deter termites from the home as well as a promise to repair damage caused to the home by termites during the term of that bond. These can provide a great deal of peace of mind to homeowners so they know their house will either remain free of termite damage, or any such damage will be repaired.
