Are you still taking drugs like Prilosec or Nexium for heartburn? Perhaps you’ll reconsider if you heard the latest about what these drugs are doing to your body…Maybe you already knew about the possibility of these types of drugs grinding down your bones until they become thin, brittle and more prone to fractures. And perhaps you’re also aware of the fact that they can make your heart race uncontrollably. It could be that you’re ok with the fact that a German study found that the use of antacids like Prilosec increased the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s by 44%…or it’s likely that you’re unbothered by the risk of super infections (which can be bad enough to require hospitalization) because you’re not planning on being on these drugs long-term. Well, you might want to reconsider because the manufacturers of these drugs know that quite the opposite is true. Shockingly, antacids cause a hidden type of dependence which makes them nearly IMPOSSIBLE to quit once started…

What is RHIZINATE 3x? RHIZINATE 3x is an all-natural compound of the licorice plant that cools heartburn, relieves indigestion, heals ulcers and even soothes canker sores. So significant is the power of RHIZINATE 3x it was found to COMPLETELY CURE 22% of patients suffering from peptic ulcer disease while showing a WHOPPING 90% improvement in the symptoms of others it did not cure. What does that mean for you? That means you won’t have to stuff your pockets full of Tums, or choke down a shot of Maalox or run to a nearby pharmacy after enjoying a family meal. RHIZINATE 3x means your doctor won’t have to “run some extra tests” at your next G.I. check-up; RHIZINATE 3x means TOTAL COMFORT after enjoying your favorite meals…because RHIZINATE 3x is going to be the ACE up your sleeve, giving you a healthier G.I. tract by healing it from the inside out; and allowing you to quit those LIFE-DRAINING drugs that slowly ruin your intestines, bones, brain, heart and immune system.

This type of dependence is so significant it outraged Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of Public Citizen’s Health Research Group enough to send letters to the FDA to have warnings regarding the risk of dependence clearly printed on the box. Dr. Wolfe is outraged because he knows that once an individual starts using drugs like Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid or even Zantac or Pepcid there is an actual worsening of heartburn that users will not realize until they stop using these products. So it’s literally like a form of addiction, making the risk of bone fractures, arrhythmias, Alzheimer’s and super infections that much more likely for the user whom we now know will certainly have to take these drugs long term. And to make matters worse, the National Institutes of Health conducted a study and found that individuals who maintain long-term use of these drugs are at increased risk for esophageal cancer!

“This stuff was recommended for my wife for her stomach from her Naturopath and it works great! She has almost no pain and is able to eat foods that were causing her pain.” – Tom Hedlin

There’s good news according to Dr. Jaqueline Wolf, a gastroenterologist and professor at Harvard Medical School. She says the worsening of acid-reflux caused by these drugs can be reversed over time with adequate lifestyle changes. But if we’re honest, this correction isn’t going to happen overnight – there will be significant (and painful) challenges in the transition…Thank goodness there are natural solutions to heartburn like RHIZINATE 3x to put heartburn on ice. Scientists believe RHIZINATE 3x soothes the entire digestive tract by creating a buffer between gut tissue and digestive acid. In fact, RHIZINATE 3x is so effective against acid-reflux it has been known to restore the lining of your digestive tract after it’s been depleted – a benefit that will eliminate your need of antacid drugs for GOOD.

Are you ready for ALL-DAY relief of heartburn, indigestion, ulcers, pain and waking in the night with acid in your mouth? Do you want fast, soothing relief that doesn’t take weeks to kick in? Then purchase RHIZINATE 3x, the natural CURE for heartburn that works with your body instead of slowly destroying it…best of all, RHIZINATE 3x will not cause dependence like Nexium or Zantac does. Users are often able to reduce their need of RHIZINATE 3x over time. So get RHIZINATE 3x on sale for $15.98 today if you want to enjoy all your favorite foods again, without paying for it with your health. Keep in mind your purchase is RISK FREE, if you get no results after complete use of RHIZINATE 3x, simply return your empty bottle for a refund.

Meet Dorothy Burdette-Boyd, author, entrepreneur, fundraiser, wife, mother, and grandmother. Dorothy is the author of the children’s’ book, The Trio Kids based on her childhood growing up in Sardis, Mississippi. We caught up with Dorothy to get the inside “story” about her book and her journey along the way.

Awesomeness baked fresh daily.

OTM: What prompted you to write The Trio Kids?

DBB: The Trio Kids was originally written as a story to read during Children’s Church back home. Our church would normally order short stories for us to read aloud to the children during service. One week the books didn’t arrive, so I decided to write my own story and read it to the kids. They liked it so much that I received a standing ovation for it, and I continued to get compliments on it weeks later. When I relocated to Atlanta, I decided to self-publish it and put it in book form. OTM: The Trio Kids is a lovely story. Can you tell us about the three sisters featured in the book?

MARIETTA/WEST COBB • 770-421-9720 • 3718 Dallas Highway, Suite 8 • Marietta, GA • (Across from The Avenues West Cobb)

DBB: The three sisters are actually modeled after my sister, my niece, and me. The events actually happened, but I switched the roles around a bit. Meaning that my sister who was always came in last in the book, actually always came in first, and my niece who played the role of always coming in first couldn’t win a race if she was the only one on the field. The character, Patsy, is pretty much based on my life. The Trio Kid’s setting is at a school in Sardis, Mississippi, the town where I grew up and lived until I graduated from high school. I grew up very poor and the best way to describe it is to say, ‘The struggle was real!’ Although we were poor, we did have things that I was grateful for such as the beautiful outdoors and the activities that it gave us like fishing, long walks, family picnics and softball games. OTM: We understand you are working on your next book. Can you share a few details with us? DBB: Yes. I am currently working on my next book, I Never Felt Loved. It mainly focuses on actual events in my life, a close relative, and a friend. For the most part, the story has been written but not yet edited; I am still awaiting the inside illustrations to complete this work. OTM: Is there anything else that you’d like to share with our readers? DBB: I attend Cedarcrest Church in Acworth and am a devoted Christian who loves the Lord. I recognize that I am no one without Him and I give God all of the glory for my accomplishments and blessings. I am also a mother and the proud grandmother of three grandchildren who live in Cordova, Tennessee. In addition to being a self-published author, I am a dedicated representative for The Marvin Hayes Scholarship Fund out of Sardis, Mississippi. From the sales of my book and various fundraising events, I donate to this cause to assist high school graduates in furthering their college education. Dorothy also designs gift baskets and is a full-time server at Fish Thyme in Acworth. Please visit Dorothy’s website for more information about her life, her books and the Marvin Hayes Scholarship Fund.

A special congratulations goes out to Dorothy and her husband, Ronald L. Boyd who were married on Sept. 19, 2017! PAGE 8

Guilt Trip

by Mark Orler

November experiences one of the most heavily traveled days of the year. Without exception, each Thanksgiving week we get to enjoy at least one news report from outside Hartsfield-Jackson Airport describing the volume of passengers that are going to be handled during the festive weekend and another where a “low-rung” news reporter is set out above the downtown connector describing in detail the congestion that is caused when a lot of cars attempt to use the same road. I am blessed that my extended family resides in close proximity to my own home and that neither the airport, nor the connector, get to enjoy my presence during this holiday travel time. However, in lieu of long lines, invasive body searches and interstates disguised as parking lots, I get to enjoy a different trip frustration…guilt. My holiday guilt trip usually begins right before Halloween with a single phone call. “Hi Mom, what’s up?” “Are you busy? Because I don’t want to bother you if you are busy…I don’t want to be a bother.” “You not a ‘bother’ mother, and I am not too busy to talk, again, what’s up?” “Weeellll…….” The conversation that follows usually goes into detail about how my sisters and their respective families won’t commit to anything and how she is just trying to get a “headcount” for Thanksgiving and then eventually gets around to the requested assurance that I won’t be ditching my parents for the Holiday Feast. “Mom, that’s like six weeks away? Do you really need a firm answer now?”

New Patient Special

“Well, yes, because Publix is having a sale on Turkeys this week and I need to know how many to get.”

Cleaning, Exam & Digital X-rays*

“How many did we get last year?” I ask. Knowing full well that the answer is two because that’s how many we buy every year. Two. “I can’t remember that far back!” Is her patented reply.

50 off Dentistry $

“It was two mother!” I respond, “It’s been two since 1982…always T….W….O, two!” “Soooo, if I get two turkeys does that mean I can count on you and your family attending; because that’s a lot of leftover turkey if you have planned to go somewhere else?”

We verbally dance like this for a while, but eventually I am forced to concede that if a second turkey is purchased, even if it is purchased ‘on sale’, or through some crazy BOGO offered by Publix, that my entire crew will be present at her table on Thanksgiving Day lest a leg, or thigh, be banished to the land of Tupperware.

The guilt is small I will grant you, but apparently the price of a 13 lb. turkey is enough to sway me.

I keep this in mind as I return home and inform my wife.

“Honey!” I yell as I enter the kitchen, “Cancel the flight to Paris, it looks like we are, for the umpteenth year in a row, having Thanksgiving at my Mom’s house.” “Let me guess,” She replies, “You got ‘2-turkeyed.’” “Nooo,” I reply, “Cranberry sauce was mentioned too.”

Here’s what our patients have to say: I took a fall in May of 2017 which put my hip an inch out of place. Eight weeks later it was still bothering me and I had significant tingling in my legs. It was impossible to take normal strides and every step was excruciating. After coming to North Cobb Spine and Nerve my pain level has dropped from an eight on a scale of 1 to 10 to a one! I can now step sideways, backwards, and take care of my responsibilities around the house. Happy November my friends! This month is officially the kick off to the holiday season. So instead of an actual article I am going to give you a challenge this month. A challenge TO BE THANKFUL THAT YOU ARE YOU! But first a few questions… Why is it easier to give a compliment than to receive one? When you give a compliment, you mean it right? Don’t you think they do too? Why is it when someone gives us a compliment, we often argue back instead of just saying thank you?

“Compliments are gifts.

Receive them and say THANK YOU!”

I know way too well how easy it can be to compare yourself to others. (Let’s not forget, I work in a make-up room completely surrounded by floor to ceiling mirrors. Talk about a self esteem killer). So let’s just agree, there will always be someone taller, thinner, smaller, smarter and prettier…but there is only ONE you and you are AMAZING!

“Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself”- Coco Chanel Of course, when I give you a challenge, I will gladly step up to the plate and do it along with you. So here goes. I have always been short, curvy, loud and have a face full of freckles. So naturally, I have always dreamt of being tall and thin with a beautifully clear, glowing, fresh face and a delicate sweet voice. But that was not the card I was dealt…time to be thankful. I am Tara. I am a great mother, a good wife and a kind and considerate neighbor. I am thankful that I am short because I rarely bump my head

(and even though I am curvy, people still refer to me as petite).

Page Program(5.5”x4.25”)

Half Page Program(5.5”x4.25”)

I am thankful for the extra skin on my lower belly (that I jokingly call my “hoodie in front”) because that is where my 3 children lived and grew for 9 full months.

I am thankful for my big loud mouth because no one ever says, “What did you say?” I am thankful for my stubby little legs because they take me everywhere I need to go. See, that wasn’t so hard… was it? (Actually it was a bit hard.) It is so much easier for me to give anyone but myself a compliment. But I did it!!! And you can too! Walk over to your mirror, take a look at yourself and BE THANKFUL THAT YOU ARE YOU. In the words of the great Dr. Seuss, “Today you are you, that’s truer than true. Be thankful this holiday season, I am thankful for you!

9Round Opening in West Cobb

Offers 30-Minute Workout Focused on Kickboxing Techniques The world of fitness franchising has grown dramatically in recent years. And in a landscape once dominated by big-box gyms, the expansion of smaller, more specialized facilities is rapidly gaining ground. One such fitness concept that is achieving a competitive edge over the local marketplace is 9Round, a kickboxing fitness franchise. And it’s showing no signs of slowing down. The new gym, located at 3894 Due West Rd, Suite 260 in Marietta in Towne Square at Due West, uses an intense 30-minute workout focused on kickboxing techniques to achieve a total body workout. “Consumers are becoming more aware and ambitious with their fitness levels and are looking for real fitness programs and not just access to fitness equipment,” said 9Round owner, Roni Meyerhoff. “There is something empowering about kickboxing – it is the sense of empowerment that appeals to most people. 9Round isn’t just a gym, it’s a lifestyle.”

There are 1,440 minutes in a day,

Developed by reigning IKF Light Middleweight Kickboxing Champion of the World, Shannon “The Cannon” Hudson, 9Round workouts consist of nine, three-minute stations of activities that include cardio, weight training, abdominal exercises and kicks and punches on 100-pound, double-end, upper cut and speed bags. A real boxing bell rings to begin the workout, another to warn the station is ending, and a third to signal the end. Members have a 30-second active break between rounds to recover. There are no class times, trainers are always on site to motivate and lead the workouts, and routines change daily, giving members a fresh workout every time they come in. An incentive for first time visitors is a free 30 minute work out session. “Our goal is to help people reach their physical fitness goals, 9-rounds at a time,” said Meyerhoff. “9Round is the perfect setting to meet your goal, whatever that may be. Since each workout is only 30 minutes, there are no excuses for you to not come in and enjoy a great workout.”

GOT A BAD CASE OF SPOOKY NAILS? by Denton Mow, PA It’s that time of the year again when we get to see all the wonders that fall has to offer. From the cooler days and wonderful football weather, to pumpkin flavors and scents in all the stores, and the colorful shades of yellow, orange and green. It’s no wonder it is such a popular season. Now, you’re probably assuming I am referring to the fall foliage with such colors, but you might also be able to see the same ones with a simple glance down at your nails. While many of us were recently enthralled in all the spooks and thrills of Halloween, it’s now time to once and for all get rid of those ghoulish nails.

North Cobb Animal Hospital is a full-service veterinary medical facility located in Kennesaw. Our mission is to provide the highest quality medical, surgical, and dental care for our patients. HOURS OF OPERATION: Monday - Friday 7am to 6pm Saturday 8am to 4pm

Onychomycosis (on-ee-ko-mi-KO-sis) or nail fungus, is a very common disorder found in an estimated 10% of the population worldwide. It is a fungal infection of the nails that causes discoloration, thickening and separation of the nail from the nail bed. It may also cause pain when wearing shoes or when walking. Often, it can begin after the nail becomes damaged, thus allowing the fungi an easy access underneath the nail. It can also occur in otherwise healthy and intact nails. Individuals with diabetes or other immune compromising disease are at an increased risk of developing nail fungus. It increases in prevalence as we age but can affect those of all ages. Onychomycosis affects the toenails more than it does the fingernails mostly due to the moisture in which our shoes and socks provide. This warm, damp environment is exactly where fungi like to grow in and can be very persistent. Many individuals try numerous over the counter remedies before seeking treatment from a medical provider.

Fortunately, there are numerous options available to treat nail fungus. Topical treatments, which are applied directly on the nail along with a pill in which you take by mouth, are just a couple of options. These methods certainly can work well but it may potentially take many months to fully clear up the fungus and return the nail to normal. Laser Genesis therapy is an innovative and exciting treatment option available for nail fungus. It has been shown to be very safe with little to no discomfort while providing excellent cure rates. Treatment sessions are very short typically lasting only 20 minutes, and the best part is that many patients see great improvements after only one treatment. It is recommended however, that between three to six treatments, spaced one month apart be completed to ensure optimal treatment. The actual procedure is very comfortable and involves passing the laser beam over the infected nail a number of times. This allows the energy from the beam to penetrate the fungus while leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed. For the best treatment possible, it is recommended to treat the affected nails with a topical medication such as Dermanail or Formula Three in addition to the Laser Genesis. These products not only assist in killing the fungus, but also help restore the nails back to their healthy state. Laser therapy has many exciting uses in the field of dermatology and treating nail fungus is just one of them. If you are looking for a safe, non-invasive way to treat your nail fungus then it may be perfect for you. With no recovery time, you’ll back and ready for those springtime sandals in no time!

Dr. John Kayal specializes in skin care for all ages. If you think you need to be treated for onychomycosis or would like to learn more about Laser Genesis or another procedure, please call Kayal Dermatology and Skin Cancer Specialists to set up a consultation at 770-426-7177

Simply Thriving Mama by Dr. Kimberly Huck

Have you ever heard someone refer to a woman as “just a mom”? Or maybe even heard a woman refer to herself as being “just a mom”? Well, I have and let me tell you something... There is no such thing! We moms, we are like freaking SUPERHEROES! There are few jobs in this world more challenging, exhausting, all-consuming, incredible, and life-changing than being a mom. Hello ladies! I’m Dr. Kimberly Huck, coming to you from Marietta. My husband Daniel and I have been married for 3.5 years and have an amazing 14-month-old son, Henry. I am 30 years old, a chiropractor, fitness studio owner, and toxin-free living educator whose true passion is encouraging and supporting other women as I share my experiences with you about raising a healthy family. My whole life I knew I was destined to be a mom. My own mother has told me stories of how when I was 3, 4, and 5 years old I would swaddle my dolls, take them to the grocery store with us, and carry them all around the store hoping the other customers would think she/he was a real baby! I started babysitting when I was 12, I nannied several summers during high school and college, and I’ve spent more hours than I can count with my 15 nieces and nephews. When I became pregnant in December 2015, I thought for sure I was the most prepared woman ever to be a mom. Then in August 2016, our sweet Henry arrived... And my world was rocked. All the babysitting, nannying, and doll swaddling in the world couldn’t prepare me for when the midwife left our home and there we were, 5 hours post-partum, with a tiny human in our arms. Fully our responsibility. As prepared as I thought I was to be the world’s perfect mom, I realized over those first few months that:

A. There is no such thing as a perfect mom

B. Having your own baby is nothing like the occasional nanny job

C. Mommying is TOUGH. It’s full-time, no vacation days, food in your hair, lots of coffee TOUGH.

Joel Addison, a senior care professional with more than 15 years of experience serving seniors and their families, is pleased to announce the opening of his Cobb office located in Marietta.

When you or your loved one needs assistance, you can count on ComforCare for reliable, compassionate and personalized home care.

With all that being said, the past 14 months have been the best of my life. My son fills my heart with more joy than I ever knew possible. Experiencing the world through the eyes of someone so new and innocent has given me a completely different outlook on the way I want to live my life and the way I want to raise my children. So while being a mom is hard work, it is also the most rewarding “job” I could ever imagine. Through my pregnancy and Henry’s first year of life, I have found my passion to not only be the act of motherhood itself, but in raising a healthy child in a world that is filled with environmental, physical, and emotional toxins. From home birth to natural teething remedies to breast milk popsicles and healthy toddler snacks, I am so excited to share my natural mommying experiences and discoveries with you! My hope with this column is to be a resource and guide for all of you moms, soon-to-be moms, and future moms who don’t want to simply survive motherhood, but want to THRIVE through it and raise the healthiest kiddos possible! I do want to be clear that I definitely don’t have it all figured out. (I mean, does anyone?!) But I am hoping that my journey as a mom - the good, bad, and in between - will help encourage and support the rest of you in yours. Are there any areas you’d like support or guidance in? For any of you future moms reading this, is there anything I could share that would help you feel more prepared for motherhood? If so, please contact me, because I would LOVE to hear your thoughts, questions, or suggestions!

Please let us know how we can serve you.

Dr. Kimberly would love your feedback! Please email any questions, comments, or suggested topic ideas to and visit Simply Thriving Mama on Facebook to join her private group!

The “Earth” with out “Art” is just “EH” by Bernard and Jen Nolan Do you have original art hanging on the walls of your home created by an artist’s hand? Not the mass-produced art from companies that crank out multitudes of the same piece and sell them all over the world, but the kind that a real artist puts their heart and soul into? Or do you ask, “Why would I need art anyway-is it even important?”

Yes, Yes, it is! Our homes are important to us whether they are an investment, a place to raise a family, or an extension of ourselves. Our homes matter and what we put into them matters, as well. Numerous studies have shown that putting art in our homes deserves more attention than window treatments.

Here are 14 reasons WHY: 1.

Art heals. Many studies show that art boosts the immune system by lowering levels of chemicals that cause inflammation that can trigger diabetes, heart attacks, and other illnesses. The next time you are in a hospital, take a look around at all of the art that surrounds the interiors.

2. Art inspires us to look at the world in a different way. 3. Art is an investment.

Original art can gain monetary value over time.

One of America’s largest Thanksgiving Day races!

4. Art gives personal enjoyment. 5.

Art makes memories. Purchasing original art is an experience you will remember every time you view that special piece you were drawn to. This kind of meaningful experience will not happen when you pick up a poster in the mall.

Art inspires and fosters creativity in everyone.

Creativity and art help children to gain empathy and excel better in school.

8. Art is a great conversation starter. 9.

Displaying art in your home supports artists. Think about it. Wouldn’t the world be boring without them? Artists cannot continue to produce art without your support.

10. Make your home yours through personal expression with unique art. 11. Art keeps the brain active.

Presenting Sponsors

12. Art can be relaxing. 13. Art makes a room feel finished. 14. Creating your own gallery is fun! There are many reasons that can inspire you to take the creative challenge of finding the art you love and bringing it home. Before you do that, ponder this …. “Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life.” - Pablo Picasso If you are an artist or someone who appreciates art, we’d love to have you participate in a new column that spreads the word about the arts in Our Town. Teaching Your Child to Ride a Bike There is no feeling more exhilarating than learning to ride a bike.

by Melissa Bruntlett When I was a child, learning to ride gave me the freedom to pedal around my neighborhood – the wind in my face – and enjoy my first bit of independence. Now I’m a parent, and I love passing my joy for riding on to my children. Currently, my four-year-old son is finding his “riding legs” on his run bike. And I can still remember the moment that my daughter first rode off on her pedal bike. It happened on her fifth birthday. After many failed attempts, it was as though something just “clicked.” She started pedaling; I let go of the back of her saddle; she was off. I was so proud, squealing with excitement at how happy she was to have overcome her fears. While teaching children to ride can be a joy, it can also be a challenge. Here are six tips to help you get your youngsters on their way to their own two-wheeled adventures:

When is my child ready to ride? Once your children can walk confidently on their own, they are physically ready to learn. You’ll know that they are mentally ready to learn when you ask them if they want to try, and they say “yes” or when they try riding bikes belonging to their friends or older siblings.

Am I ready to teach my child to ride? Teaching children to ride is a lesson in patience. It takes time, and you must be ready to deal with the frustration of knowing that they are ready before they do. Find other parents who are also teaching their children to ride so that you can share your experiences – or teach your children together.

What can I do for tear-free teaching? Go to a familiar place that your children can navigate confidently. Congratulate them often, and be specific about what they do right. This means applauding every milestone, from steering straight to how much ground they cover before stopping or falling off. And don’t hesitate to let go. While you don’t want them to get hurt, they will never learn the joy of riding independently until you let go.

What tools can help get my child riding? Run bikes and children’s bikes (with the pedals removed) can help toddlers and young children learn to balance and steer while keeping their feet on the ground. Look for lighter models as they help make riding – and being transported by a parent – easier.

Trail-a-bikes help children experience pedaling and leaning into turns while being safely towed behind you. They are great tools for preschoolers and for school-aged children who are developing confidence on run bikes but aren’t yet ready for the road or for longer trips. Another bonus? By following behind you, your child can watch and mimic your hand signals and shoulder checks.

How do I get my little one to wear a helmet? Make wearing helmets “fun” by letting them pick their own with flashy colors or designs. And talk to them, explaining that wearing a helmet while learning protects them if they fall.

How do I encourage my child to continue riding? Once your children are riding on their own, continue to ride with them, especially on streets with little car traffic. Other ideas include: (a) starting a bike train with children in your neighborhood so that everyone rides together to school, (b) taking part in programs such as Safe Routes to School or looking into starting similar programs in your city (a great way to encourage more parents to get their children riding), and (c) taking action in your city to improve cycling infrastructure. Protected bike lanes and traffic-calmed bikeways are key to keeping more children safe and comfortable on the roads.

Good luck, and happy riding!

6 TIPS TO UPDATE YOUR SKIN CARE FOR FALL By Eliana Ocheseanu - The Skin Whisperer

If you’ve been feeling like your summer skincare routine isn’t quite getting the job done anymore, you may be right! Our Autumn days can still be warm while leading to cooler nights. Breakouts may occur while the cooler air is creating layers of buildup on the surface of the skin. This can result in a dry, dull appearance on your skin by November. Pamela Vendetti, Lead Educator for Neo Gennessis, advises how you can introduce a few products that can easily help you transition from summer to fall with a couple of changes to your home care routine. These 6 simple tips will have you sipping your Pumpkin Lattes with the healthy and radiant skin you want this fall. Tip #1: Change Your Cleansing Routine Heading into the fall season, a gentle cleanser that soothes and calms the skin is in order. Try to use a milky cleanser that will remove your make-up but not strip too much of the oil in your skin. Unless you have acne breakouts, follow with a gentle toner without alcohol or witch hazel to restore the PH without drying or burning the skin. Tip #2: Boost Hydration I’m just not referring to moisturizers here. After cleansing the skin, it is important to keep the skin moist prior to applying workhorse serums. This is an ideal time to add a moisturizing mist like the Neo Genessis Stem Cell Moisturizing Mist or the LeMieux ISO-CELL Recovery solution. These are just examples so find one you love.

Holiday Design

Tip #3: Give Your Eyes Some Love You may be too busy in the summer to think about products that protect and firm the delicate eye area. With holiday season right around the corner, it is the perfect time to add a boost to the eye area to counteract crepey skin, dark circles, and puffiness. Tip #4: Change Your Moisturizer Fall and winter call for a change of moisturizer if your skin begins to feel dry under your current routine. Find a deeply hydrating moisturizer, preferably with Vitamin E or tocopherol, which will protect your skin during the cold months. Tip #5: Exfoliate Cooler, dry air creates a build up on the surface of the skin, which in turn creates a lackluster appearance. This is the perfect time to add some gentle exfoliation to you return once a week with enzymes or a low percentage AHA peel. This will nourish your skin and it will be ready for the moisturizer of your choice.

Tip #6: Add a Body Cream Skin that suffers from dryness and a lackluster appearance isn’t limited to the face and neck. While fall and winter clothes cover more of our body, the skin can become extremely dry, flaky, and itchy. Try a Body Cream that absorbs quickly and provides long lasting results. Bonus Tip: Humidifier One of the kindest things you can do for your skin in the fall and winter is to sleep in a room with a humidifier. It is also wonderful for your hair and sinuses. We need to pull out all the stops to counteract Mother Nature.

Imagine running your business and paying bills with trade instead of cash. Many businesses right here in Marietta are doing just that, including Johnny’s Pizza at the Marietta-Dallas Highway location. Owner Mike Ford has been a client of The Barter Company for more than 11 years. He uses barter to maximize his cash flow and helps keep his restaurant running successfully. “Barter helps us in several ways,” explained Ford. “It brings in new customers who wouldn’t normally come into the restaurant. We also use barter to pay for everyday operating expenses like repairs to the restaurant and advertising. That frees up our cash to pay for those other expenses. By using barter, I al-ways feel like I’m getting a discount and paying for it in a different way!”

FARMHOUSE STYLE Comfy, cozy, and full of charm, classic farmhouse style has become more popular than ever. In many ways it is a response to the minimalist trend that was popular in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Families are now more than ever looking to embrace tradition and surround themselves by interiors that make them feel good.

What Is Classic Farmhouse Style? Classic farmhouse style evokes feelings of warmth and comfort. It’s traditional without being fussy, classic without being museum-like, and comfortable in a way that makes you want to put your feet up and stay awhile. Classic farmhouse style is all about mixing comfortable furniture with salvaged materials like reclaimed woods and shiplap walls. Antiques are right at home in classic farmhouse interiors, but none that are too delicate to touch. Everything is tactile and tangible. Most of all, classic farmhouse is cozy without being cluttered.

Classic farmhouse is similar to country style, but whereas country tends to lean a little towards kitschy and busy, farmhouse retains a certain level of sophistication. Country relies heavily on accessories while farmhouse keeps them to a minimum.

Common Elements In every classic farmhouse you’ll find a combination of some of the below elements. • Reclaimed wood • Barn board details • Big, comfortable furniture • Architectural salvage • Pine furniture • Wrought iron accents • Wide plank floors • Vintage accessories

Get the Look The key to achieving a classic farmhouse look is all about comfort. Furniture should invite you to sit down, and nothing should look as though it’s too delicate to touch. There’s a down home feeling that invites a sense of laughter and fun. • Start with a color palette of warm or cool neutrals (cream, beige, silver sage and gray all work well), and then layer in some natural wood tones. Look for salvaged woods that have some wear and tear whenever possible. Scratches, knots, and nicks add to the authenticity of the look. • Feel free to use colors you’re fond of as accent pieces, but in order to stay true to the look try to keep the overall color scheme neutral. • Be sure to use a variety of textures in order to give the look some depth. Mix woods and metals, but also mix fabrics like cotton, canvas, wool, or chenille. Because farmhouse style is largely made up of neutral colors you’ll need a mix of textures to keep the space from looking flat. • Layer in some mixed metals by way of light fixtures, hardware, and architectural details like railings. As a general rule it’s best to limit it to no more than 3 metals per room. • Use organic materials in order to keep the space feeling as though it’s connected to the outdoors. Wood floors and architectural details are best, but also consider introducing stone, wicker, rattan, sisal and other natural materials wherever it makes sense. • Accessories are an important element, but under no circumstances should you overdo it and try to squeeze in too many. A few well-placed accessories that are given room to breathe are all you need to complete the look. • Today, farmhouse style is a way of life that reflects a love for the land and it’s bounty and keeps a close connection between both. It loves simplicity and has a do-it-yourself attitude. Recycling, up cycling and renovating are all in the wheelhouse of farmhouse style. Although unpretentious and very welcoming, there is a great sense of style about farmhouse living! • Anyone can capture the spirit and spunk of farmhouse style. It mixes well with traditional, modern, southern, cottage and even industrial style, just to name a few. • By adding just a few practical and perfectly placed farmhouse elements your home can radiate this popular style

RUSTIC TOUCHES Use chippy architectural elements with what you have to breath some farmhouse style into a room. Chippy things look great mixed with traditional pieces! It’s all about that rustic/lux balance.

As many as 80% of us will experience a back problem at some point in our lives. Low back pain is one of the leading causes of lost work time. Fortunately, many back problems resolve themselves without medical intervention after a few weeks. However, when a back problem persists, impacts standing upright, or causes leg pain or weakness that grows worse, it is time to consult with a medical professional. The most common cause of lower back pain is a sprain, strain or spasm usually brought on by poor lifting technique, twisting and lifting at the same time, slips and falls, or improper ergonomic practices. Incidences of back pain that are not injury or trauma-related may be congenital (found at birth), degenerative, age-related, disease-related, or may be linked to poor posture or obesity. The back consists of more than 30 small bones, or vertebrae, stacked one on top of the other, and separated by spongy cartilage known as discs. Disc disorders are the most common cause of adult low back pain, brought on by injury, wear and tear or age. Other causes include a narrowing of the spinal or nerve canals, arthritic or degenerative changes in the small joints of the back, osteoporotic fractures, and sometimes even infections or tumors. Unfortunately, there are many possible causes of back pain and determining which of these is responsible for your specific symptoms can be difficult.

When seeking a medical consultation for back pain, a patient may first seek out their primary care physician, followed by consultation with a spine surgeon. A great first option for non-emergency spine pain is that of a Physiatrist, or a medical doctor trained in the field of medicine known as Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or PM&R. A PM&R physician will work together with the patient to understand their needs, conduct specialized medical tests to identify the cause of the pain, and prepare a comprehensive therapy program to treat the condition with non-surgical means. The goal of the physiatrist is restoration of the patient’s functional level without use of surgical intervention, and without relying on medications to minimize pain. The physiatrist will perform a thorough physical and neurological examination. To help confirm the cause of the back pain, the physiatrist may utilize X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), CT scan, bone scan, or bone density tests. Blood tests may be used to determine whether whole-body infection is present or arthritis is involved. Physiatrists are also trained in electrodiagnostic medicine, measuring the efficiency of nerve and muscle function. These electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies can help the physiatrist determine the origin or cause of pain.

A conservative treatment plan may include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), a period of rest, passive physical therapy such as massage, transcutaneous electrical stimulation [TENS], heat/cold, and then active rehabilitation exercise, or physical therapy. A variety of spinal injections or procedures may be used to provide pain relief and functional improvement. Despite these efforts, spine surgery may sometimes be recommended. Selecting a physiatrist who is part of an orthopedic and sports medicine practice providing comprehensive surgical and non-surgical treatment options provides continuity of care. Deitrick L. Cox, MD, OrthoAtlanta, is a physiatrist specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation, PM&R. Dr. Cox provides non-surgical orthopedic care including non-surgical spine, musculoskeletal medicine and functional medicine to patients suffering from muscular, nerve, joint and tendon injuries. Tech Dad

Every January, I set aside a few hours for what I call Unsubscribe Day. I’m not sure if you have the same issue, but between Nov 1st and December 31st, the amount of junk email I receive seems to increase ten-fold. Gmail is pretty good at catching most of the really horrible stuff, but I still get tons of emails from businesses and organizations that I never contacted, newsletters I never signed up to receive, and other miscellaneous communications. The general recommendation these days is to simply delete it and NOT go to the bottom of the emails and click the Unsubcribe option (if it exists). Most of the legitimate businesses and organizations that make it through Gmail’s spam filter do have the Unsubscribe option, however, and clicking on it and spending 30 seconds or so to uncheck a box or type in a short message stating you no longer wish to receive their stuff... it does work. I’m usually removed within a few days or so and the amount of junk mail slows for the first 6-8 months of the year. And then it starts to pick up again.

I’ve done my Unsubscribe day for 3-4 years now, and it is effective. I highly recommend you try it in early January 2018. But there’s also a simple service you can start using today that can make a big impact in reducing the amount of junk mail you receive. Let me explain. How many times have you visited a website to make a one-time purchase or maybe to download a “free” PDF or read an article and you get the dreaded request for your email address before you can proceed? Happens to me almost everyday, and it’s quite annoying. Our email addresses are sold and shared and copied, and it’s no surprise we get so much junk mail. It’s time to fight back. Point your web browser to and you’ll be provided with a temporary email address that lasts... you guessed it... 10 minutes. Copy the address (and leave the window open), use it on whatever website or service is asking, and then flip back to the website. Any message sent to you will appear there, allowing you to open and read it and click the familiar “Click here to verify your email” message. You can even reply to the message or forward it. It acts like a real email address but will totally self-destruct when the timer reaches zero. Need more time? There’s a small button that resets the countdown to 10 minutes again. Use it as long as you need it, but just remember to click the reset button before it hits zero. Once it does, there will be no record of this email address, no way to recover it and, more importantly, no way for you to be contacted since you didn’t use your own email address.

Does it really work? Yep! I’ve been using it for a few months and it is great. There are plenty of free temporary email services out there (just Google “temporary email address”) and I’ve tried a few but is the one I’ve continued to use because it’s simple and doesn’t make me jump through any hoops. I’ve even added a quick link button on my web browser so it’s right there when I need it. (Which is just about daily.) These disposable email addresses won’t completely remove junk mail; there are times you’ll need to use your real email address, and there’s no guarantee the services you use won’t share or sell it, but a disposable email address should reduce the amount of junk you do get, especially if you do your own Unsubscribe Day.
