How To Stop The Summer Slide by Mary B. Hammock, MSN, CPNP Summers bring water parks and beach trips, picnics and barbecues, and hopefully, rest and relaxation.

For children, it can also bring the “summer slide.” This is name given to the period of time that little brains sit idle in the summer. According to the National Summer Learning Association, “A conservative estimate of lost instructional time is approximately two months of the school year…It’s common for teachers to spend a least a month re-teaching” the forgotten material at the start of the next school year. Families are children’s most important teachers and there are some great ways to keep your children reading, and thus retaining, during the summer.

Read aloud to your children. Reading to an infant stimulates brain growth as the child listens, looks at the pictures and begins to turn the pages of board books. That brain growth continues for decades to come. The summer months provide extra time for read-alouds at the local library or special school functions. Read-alouds help stimulate the imagination and those themes will evolve into playtime. Once children are old enough to read for themselves, encourage them to read to you. This continues to strengthen interest and appreciation of reading. Combine summer activities with book reading. Choose books about the beach or a baseball game. Discuss what you read about over the sand castle building or over hotdogs at the ballpark. Tell your child why you liked the book, what you learned from the book, or how the book helped you and then listen as they tell you the same. Provide plenty of reading material. Storybooks are great for young readers but informational material may spark interest in constellations, underwater sea animals or dinosaurs. Older readers may be interested in magazines and newspapers. Books that teach children how to make or do something will do wonders to break the boredom. A weekly trip to the library will keep reading materials fresh. Motivate your children to be active readers. Leading by example helps teach children the “skill and will” to learn. Reading for enjoyment can get lost among the job-related reports and journal articles but when nearly half of all young adults are not reading for pleasure, it is imperative to turn off the television and curl up with a good book. A recent study published in The Reading Teacher revealed findings that are suggestive the E-Books may not be the best way for young readers to read. It seems that the multitude of features may be interfering with the comprehension of the text. Certain flourishes, including creatures that emit noise and move around the screen or birds that flutter and sounds playing in the background, cause comprehension to fragment. E-books can also lead to less time reading overall. Another study cited that children spent 43% of their e-book engagement time playing games embedded within the e-books rather than reading the text. It is imperative to review E-books for the best reading opportunities for your children. Children who do not read over the summer will hit that “summer slide” and lose up to two months of learning. You and your children need to keep reading this summer and keep the learning fun. So, grab a good book and take it along to the beach, the pool, and the picnic. Enjoy! Healthy Steps Pediatrics is helping to grow healthy children one step at a time. Call 678-384-3840 to schedule your children’s summer check-ups.

FINALLY, YOU CAN SLEEP, WORK, AND PLAY WITHOUT PAIN AGAIN! How To Get Rid Of Neck Pain And Disc Herniations Without Surgery

If you’re suffering from neck pain, arm pain, or numbness in the hands, this may be the most important article you ever read about your health. This is, quite frankly, a vital message regarding your future health. It’s about what is perhaps the most revolutionary treatment ever used for neck and arm pain. Even pinched nerves and disc herniation’s can be successfully treated with this amazing therapy. You can recover. Joyful, pain-free living should be yours. My name is Dr. Amy Valente & I understand what it feels like to live in pain, because I see it every day. I’ve seen hundreds of people with neck problems and headaches leave the office pain free. When cushions in your neck joint, called discs, get injured or wear out, they begin to degenerate and cause pain. Bulging and herniation’s begin to form, pressing on the nerve roots. The most common invasive treatment for disc herniation is surgery. Even with health insurance the patient is left with their own portion of the bill, in excess of $10,000-$15,000, and sometimes more. In addition, the recovery time and missed work can be anywhere from 3 to 6 months, not to mention the obvious severe risks associated with all surgeries. Before You Go Under The Knife

Just Listen to What our Patients Have To Say: When I began treatment at North Cobb Spine and Nerve I had agonizing pain in my neck and I could not feel my right arm. This had been going for so long that I thought my case was hopeless. Since I have started care movement in my arm and hand have been restored. I know longer have numbness in my arm and I can turn my head from side to side without pain. My energy has been restored and I can now play with my kids! I am so amazed after 30 years of pain I feel 100% better! Thank you, Colleen S I sought out care at North Cobb Spine and Nerve for the pain and stiffness in my neck. The pain had been bothering me for about 4 months. I was unable to turn my head from side to side, which made driving difficult. Before seeking treatment I had tried multiple muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory medications. Since starting my care I have improved 100%. The pain in my neck is gone and I am now able to turn my head with no pain. What surprised me most was that I have also had fewer headaches. The staff here has treated me great and always show genuine concern about my well -being. Thank you, Diana T

And Opt For Spinal Surgery… You should seriously consider a less invasive approach called spinal decompression.

Until June 15th, you can get everything for only $20.

Non-surgical spinal decompression is a new technology that has been proven to help disc herniation. It creates a vacuum effect on the disc, which pulls the disc back into its normal position and brings in a fresh blood supply to promote healing.

It’s time for you to find out if spinal decompression will be your neck, arm and headache pain solution.

The conditions this amazing treatment can help with are:

What does this offer include?

• Serious neck pain • Shooting pains in the arms • Numbness and tingling • Migraine headaches • Bulging Cervical Discs

FOR 10 DAYS ONLY, I’m running a very special offer where you can find out if you are a candidate for spinal decompression Everything I normally do in my new patient evaluation. You’ll get… • An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being where I will listen…really listen…to the details of your case. • A complete neuromuscular examination, full set of specialized x-rays, review of your MRI, and a

thorough analysis of your findings so we can design your plan to being pain free. • You’ll get to see everything first hand and find out if this amazing treatment will be your neck pain solution, like it has been for so many other patients. And the best part about it is... No Dangerous Drugs, No Invasive Procedures, and No Painful Exercises. Spinal decompression treatments are very gentle. In fact, every once and awhile I even catch a patient sleeping during sessions. The normal price for this type of evaluation, including x-rays, is $250 so you’re saving a considerable amount by taking me up on this offer. Call today and we can get you scheduled for your consultation, exam and x-rays as soon as there’s an opening. Our office is located just off the loop near Wal-Mart, just a few minutes from you. When you call, tell the receptionist you’d like to come in for the Decompression Evaluation so she can give you proper credit for this special offer. Sincerely, Dr. Amy Valente. How many years can your body handle taking pills? Taking pain medications (even over-the-counter pills) is no way to live. Pain pills don’t fix anything, they just numb the pain. Call today. I may be able to help you live a normal, pain-free life again.

Summer Outdoor Fun by Amber Burckhalter Summer has arrived and we are all looking forward to a little break from the hectic school days. During the summer months, I love to get out with my family and visit local parks and trails and enjoy a picnic while watching the wildlife. This month, I am introducing my favorite places to spend family and doggie time together. Remember, as the summer heat rolls in, pack ice water for yourself and your dog, keep an eye on your pup for signs of over-heating, incorporate water splashing locations and walk during cooler hours. Taylor-Brawner Park, a 12 acre park on Atlanta Road, features walking trails around a large lawn, a gazebo, a large playground, a picnic pavilion, adult swings, a small seating area for concerts and a fountain near the entrance. This park also hosts Tuesday food truck night so bring your family and your pup for a nice picnic on the beautiful lawn. My favorite feature is the dog fresh water fountain, located by the playground. Tolleson Park, located on King Springs Road, has 26 acres that contains tennis courts, a large swimming pool, playground facilities, a sand volleyball court and several well-groomed ball fields. The trail loops around the park, in and out of shade trees and has several splash areas to cool pup’s feet. This is a quiet place to walk, one of my favorites, with little foot traffic. Park by the tennis courts to start your walk. Brinkley Park, located by the American Legion, includes baseball fields, an open space field, trails, footbridges over creek, a playground and pavilion, concessions/restroom facility and ample parking. The trail is short but well shaded and good for a quick exercise session. The Silver Comet Trail is a quiet, non-motorized, paved trail used by walkers, hikers, bicyclists, rollerbladers, horses, dog walkers, and is wheelchair accessible. The trail is 61.5 miles long and starts in Smyrna, Georgia, ending

at the Georgia/Alabama state line. Great for the kids who want to ride their bikes while you walk with the dog. There is a large bathroom located at Mavell Road Trailhead and ample parking. This trail can get very busy and hectic on weekends so mid week is best. Sope Creek, just north of Atlanta, offers over 3 miles of well shaded hiking, mountain biking and running trails that feels as if one is hiking in the remote mountains. Located on the banks of Sope Creek, the trail includes the multi-story ruins of a paper mill, the picturesque Sibley Pond and lots of places to play on the rocks and in the water. The well-marked trails can be a bit steep and strenuous so this trail is best for older children and healthy dogs. Looking for a day trip? Check out the trails at Kennesaw Mountain. My favorite is the Burnt Hickory Trail, which is less travelled and winds through meadows and wooded areas. There are a few splash spots for the pup and plenty of wildlife for the kids; we have seen deer and bunnies every time we visit. Picnic areas are plentiful and a break in the meadow at the crest of the trail is a must. You can peer out at where the Union and Rebel forces fought and even have a fun history lesson. So get out there and enjoy your local parks and trails! Have fun, take in the sights and sounds of our wonderful city and make some memories with your family and pup. Winter will be here before we know it and we will all yearn for the sunshine again. Happy summer break! Established by Certified Canine Behavioral Consultant and Certified Pet Dog Trainer, Amber Burckhalter, K-9 Coach is Atlanta’s ONLY complete canine experience, providing industry-leading: Training, Playcare, Lodging & Grooming.

POOLSIDE CONFIDENCE The words poolside and confidence don’t seem like they go together, right? The anxiety of accepting a pool party invitation will vanish when you read these helpful styling tips for fun under the sun.

If you are not splashing in the water, you are making a splash in your outfit. Look for a relaxed floral or striped dress that comes to the knee or the ankle. Consider wearing a tunic over a white jean or a linen pant.

Pick a color scheme

Focus on fabrics

Look in your closet first and write down the colors you see. Take that with you when you go shopping for your bathing suit. The colors that you are already comfortable wearing could be represented in your new bathing suit.

Warm weather fabrics to choose from are cotton, linen, lace, eyelet, seersucker, or Indian silk. Straw is perfect for your bag, hat or wedge sandal.

Review your hair, skin and eye colors Bathing suit shopping can be overwhelming when you walk into the department and see lots of bright, wild colors. Focus on finding one that repeats or compliments your hair, skin, or eye colors. Already you’ll feel more attractive in a bathing suit. Push the envelope Take what you know about your colors and put them in a bold print. Explore bathing suits and/or cover-ups in eye-catching prints: graphic, animal, floral, tropical. Don’t forget the extras These are the things that make you feel dressed. Sunglasses, big tote bag, the cover up, the accessories, and the shoes are part of the complete ensemble. Make sure all the pieces relate and harmonize with each other. What to wear if you’re at the pool but not swimming

One bold move is all you need If you prefer wearing neutral colored separates, all you need to make your poolside entrance is one bold accessory. Consider the wide brimmed floppy hat, a generous lightweight infinity scarf, or a metallic heeled sandal. Sunglasses are the must-have accessories Protect your face and don’t be afraid to let your sunglasses be the main event. Choose from aviator, cat eye, oversized, or round frames. Don’t be afraid to wear colored frames. Consider mail ordering Have your suits delivered to your door so you can try them on in the privacy of your own home. Get a faux tan Slather on some self-tanner the night before you go shopping. Having a little color will lessen the shock of seeing yourself in the unflattering light of the dressing room.

Have a Happy Summer!

The Fitness Success Silver Bullet by Jason Goggans

Everyone is looking for the “magic” formula to fitness and fat loss success. Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a magic pill we could all take and be as fit and healthy as we want to be? Although, if there were such a pill I think I would still CrossFit. It’s just too much fun to stop. Anyway, we all know there is no magic pill so the only way to succeed is through hard work and discipline. That’s the way it should be. Anything worth having is worth working for, right? Fitness is no different. So, while there is no magic pill there is one thing, one quality, that the fittest a leanest all have in common. It is the closest thing to a magic pill you are going to find in fitness. It may not be the magic pill you were hoping for but the fact is this one thing is absolutely essential if you are going to achieve long term success. So, what it is the magical quality???

It’s as simple as that. Those who show up to the gym consistently and eat a healthy and nutritious diet consistently, and get adequate sleep consistently are the ones who succeed. Period.

“I went to the gym for ten years and never got any results. After 8 months at Warrior Pride Fitness I have completely transformed my body!” — Ronnie Fischer The Fastest, Most Effective, Most Fun Workout EVER For Those Who Are Committed To Achieving High Level Fitness And The Body Of Their Dreams

Consistency cannot be cheated. There are no short cuts around consistency. You must do the right things consistently and over the long haul if you truly want to succeed. The people you look at and want to emulate do not hit the gym 5 times one week, 3 times the next week, maybe skip the next week, get back in 2 times the following week, etc. No. They are in the gym 5 times a week no matter what. Gym time is a non-negotiable appointment on their calendar every single week…no questions asked. The people you look at and want to emulate do not eat healthy for two days, eat poorly the next two days, have a good week of eating then follow it with a couple of bad weeks. No. They eat a healthy and nutritious diet 6-7 days a week every week no matter what. They are not led astray by busy schedules, stress, by finishing the unhealthy food on their kid’s plate, etc. They know just how important good nutrition is and how great it makes them look and feel. They eat well consistently over the long haul. So, are you doing all the things you should be doing consistently? Are you 100% happy with your results and how you look and feel? If you answered no to these questions then you have your answer. It’s a simple fix. Not easy…but simple. Start doing the things you know you should be doing and do them consistently.

Over time you will see some amazing things happen. Your body will change, your energy levels will change, your confidence will increase exponentially, and you will become the person that other look at and want to emulate…and when those people come up to you and want to know how you did it your answer will be quick and simple. Consistency. Celebrating Father’s Day by A. Wood The celebration of Father’s Day began in this country less than a century ago. According to Wikipedia, while suggested in 1908, it was not recognized as an official holiday until 1972. It describes Father’s Day as a “complement (to) Mother’s Day in celebrating fatherhood and parenting by males, and to honor and commemorate fathers and forefathers.” Many countries have their own ancient and modern day versions. According to Hallmark, “Father’s Day is the fourth-highest card-sending holiday in the US, with 105 million cards exchanged annually. 50% of these cards are purchased for dads, and nearly 20% for husbands.” The remaining 30% falls into the realm of other special figures. We have shifted from only honoring our own dad to including other fathers. Father’s Day has moved from a sincere, low-key expression of appreciation to a retail event. Here are some suggestions of ways to show your love without breaking the bank: Send a greeting card Send a card to show you are thinking of someone, especially if they’re long distance. From free e-cards to paper options, there are options for every budget. The Hallmark Recordable Card allows you to record a 10 second personal message. You can always make Dad his own card. Get creative by including some of his favorite things on the card, either with a picture or drawing. Personalize a greeting or product What could be better than a picture of the family, pet, or beloved hobby? Upload a photo you took to such sites as or (members only) to personalize a card or create merchandise such as a mouse pad, coffee mug or blanket. Give a professional picture or create a photobook of the kids Get a portrait taken, frame it, and you’re done! You can also create your own photobook from pictures you’ve taken and saved on your computer. Give Dad his very own book showing his kids through time. Check online for different specials on photobooks by visiting, or Cook his favorite meal Pay attention to the food dad loves, and serve a special lunch. Kids can help, especially with dessert. It’s easier than standing in a holiday restaurant line. Honor what he wants to do A man who spends his weekends on a “honey-do” list and watching the kids needs time for himself. Give him the day off! Maybe he wants to spend the day with the family instead, and that is wonderful too. Let dad do whatever makes him happy. Ask kids to help Let them paint a card, make a craft, or do dad’s chores. Websites such as give project ideas, and allow children to send Father’s Day messages. While families celebrate differently, the common message is: I love you. I appreciate you. I remember you.

Make it a Happy Father’s Day!

June is marriage month. It’s not the officially recognized month, but it sure seems that way with all the invitations we receive from people wanting us to witness their initiation into the life-long commitment that is marriage; with the added bonus of a free meal. Since most of our peers have already been down the aisle, my wife and I have graduated to the cast of invitees who the bride or groom’s parents invite and who spend most of the time at the buffet line instead of the dance floor.

We get to be the haggard couple who are paying the baby-sitter by the minute and log our time spent enjoying the nuptials by how short the ceremony was and how quickly we can get to the Prime Rib station and down a piece of cake before the cell phone starts ringing with our “emergency-only” call from the sitter. I say all this because we recently spent some time in a “Marriage” class at our church and got to enjoy some of the insight to a happy marriage that was offered by a few young couples that were either just recently married, or barely engaged. The insight these young people provided was invaluable and it truly opened our eyes to how we could improve our relationship and make our marriage better….Yeah, Right! My wife and I spent most of the time in the class rolling our eyes so far back in our heads that we could see our earlobes and scribbling notes back and forth that generally went something like, “they are clueless,” or “God help them.” Therefore, in an effort to keep June the number one marriage month and reduce August’s claim to fame as the number one divorce month, I am going to share some of our “clues” to a successful marriage. Number one, you are going to fight. The books say you should stay calm and say three positive things to every negative thing you say during an argument. Our rule is that you throw three soft objects to every hard object. It improves your spouse’s reaction time and reduces the debris field. Second, you know everything there is to know about parenting, until you actually have a child. Trust me, as you sit there in the corner booth of the restaurant shaking your head and saying “our children will never behave like that,” know that they WILL and know that we parents see you over there enjoying your pitcher of smug while silently saying to ourselves, “just you wait.” Third, being right is not always getting it right. You can spend an awful lot of time on a couch sleeping in your “rightness” while a warm bed of humble awaits. Some say that roses and oysters are aphrodisiacs, but I am here to say that the word “Sorry” trumps them all. And finally, there are literally thousands of books that purport to tell you how to have a successful marriage, but only one of them is quoted during your ceremony, and if you keep that once central to your life then the other clues will fall into place.

Spring is an optimum/excellent time to sell your home. Landscaping determines whether your home feels inviting from the outside. It is a potential home buyer’s first impression. Curb appeal is important to 71 percent of homebuyers when choosing their abode, according to a 2013 National Association of Realtors survey. Landscaping is a large part of that curb appeal. An eye-catching and well-maintained landscape can add as much as 10 percent to the value of your home. So, if you want your property to stand apart from the competition, it’s going to take a little extra effort on your behalf. Here are several tips to get your yard ready for a successful spring sell: Plant instant color: A collection of beautiful contrasting flowers is a sure sign that spring is here. It fills the landscape with beautiful vibrant colors and can be relatively inexpensive. A good tip is to plant flowers in odd numbers. Plants growing in large drifts or colonies create harmony in the landscape and appear more natural. Splashes of color can make the average yard one to be desired. Mow your lawn: Frequently mowing your lawn results in a greener healthier lawn. Cut no more than one-third of the grass at a time in one mowing. Mowing high and mowing often produces a stronger turf that crowds out unsightly weeds and is less vulnerable to summer heat and dehydration. The result is a greener lawn that saves you time and resources. Aerate your lawn: Aerating allows oxygen, water and nutrients to easily reach grass roots. An easy way to do it is use a soil conditioner product. Soil conditioners are fortified with beneficial microorganisms that aerate the soil so roots grow better and it attaches to your garden hose for spraying at ease. The overall result is a lush green lawn and a healthier, more productive garden. How simple is that? Prune Limbs: Any broken, diseased or dead limbs from trees and other woody plants need to be routinely pruned for health and aesthetics. Prune back spring-blooming shrubs after flowering. Now is the time to thin out and trim up summer-blooming shrubs and most roses. Mulch Mulch Mulch: Spruce up your yard with a new application of mulch. Apply a fresh layer in all of your garden beds. The color enhances the contrast of the surrounding plants and flowers and makes everything POP! Mulch is relatively cheap and easy to apply. Keep it simple: Don’t crowd your front yard with too many objects or plants. Have a clear structure to the design and a focal point of your yard.

Remember an opulent lawn that’s graded well and healthy is appealing! Call me today to get a FREE market analysis. Now is the time to list your home for a SPRING SELL!

POISON IVY: HIKING, GARDENING, & THE GREAT OUTDOORS Poison ivy, poison sumac, and poison oak are plants that can cause a type of skin irritation called allergic contact dermatitis. What causes the rash? These plants contain an oily resin known as urushiol that may penetrate the skin and cause a rash. The rash may develop after direct contact with the oil from the plants, or by indirect contact through clothes, gardening tools, sports equipment, and even touching your pet’s fur.

What are the symptoms of the rash? Within 12-72 hours after exposure to the poisonous plants, you may develop redness, itching, swelling, and fluid filled blisters. Often times, the rash will appear in red streaks because of the way the plant brushes against the skin. Some people may develop more serious reactions to urushiol, including severe swelling of the face, mouth, neck, genitals, or eyelids. Large, widespread, and oozing blisters may also develop. The rash that develops after exposure is not contagious, and you cannot spread the rash after it appears. The fluid within the blisters does not contain urushiol and will not spread the rash.

How can the rash be treated? If an allergic reaction develops, immediately wash the skin with lukewarm water and soap. Thoroughly wash all clothing or other objects that may have been contaminated. For mild cases of allergic contact dermatitis, cool compresses, antihistamines, and over-the-counter creams such as calamine lotion may help to relieve the itching. If a more moderate to severe reaction occurs, you may need to see a physician. He or she may be able to prescribe prescription corticosteroid creams, ointments, gels, or shots to help alleviate the rash. In some cases, oral corticosteroids such as prednisone also may be necessary.

How can I prevent the rash in the future? Learning how to recognize and avoid these poisonous plants is the first step to prevention. Poison ivy and poison oak have three leaflets to a stem, so the saying “leaves of three, let them be” can be helpful in identifying these plants. A+ RATING

When it is not possible to avoid these plants, wearing long pants, long sleeve shirts, boots, and gloves may help to decrease the chance of exposure. Over-the-counter creams that contain bentoquantam may be applied to the skin before going outdoors. Bentoquantam serves as a barrier cream that can prevent the urushiol oil from penetrating the skin.

DO FATHERS MATTER? by Leisa A. Bailey, Ph.D. While the role of mothers on the development of children is well established, research is also clear on the essential contributions an involved father makes in the lives of his children. There is a upsurge of interest in this issue, and a new science of “fatherhood” was born as psychologists, geneticists, neuroscientists, anthropologists, and sociologists all began to investigate the role of fathers in their children’s and families’ lives. In many ways fathers have been minimized as little more than sources of authority and economic stability in the lives of children. However, research shows that fathers play many roles in the family, including those of companions, care providers, spouses, protectors, role models, moral guides, teachers and breadwinners. Many of the findings of this new science of fatherhood have appeared in scholarly journals and not available to the public. Psychologist, award winning journalist, and father of five, Paul Raeburn has authored Do Fathers Matter? What Science Is Telling Us About the Parent We’ve Overlooked, to be published for Father’s Day, 2014. Dr. Raeburn has spent the past eight years investigating fatherhood and his book pulls together the research and explains what it means for fathers, families, and children. Dr. Raeburn overturns many myths and stereotypes of fatherhood as he examines the latest scientific findings. Drawing on research from neuroscientists, animal behaviorists, geneticists, and developmental psychologists, Raeburn examines the stages of fatherhood, revealing the profound emotional and physiological connections between children and fathers, from conception through adolescence and into adulthood.

2. In Pregnancy. A recent University of South Florida study shows that infants whose fathers were absent during pregnancy were more likely to be born prematurely or with lower birth weights than those whose fathers were present. 3. At Birth. From the 1930’s to the late 1960’s, fathers were most often not a part of the birthing process. As men routinely were welcome into the delivery room, women reported feeling less pain, and requests for pain medication declined. Additionally, men present for their children’s birth report being more attached to their infants and more involved in their care. 4. Toddlerhood. Swedish researchers found that kids whose fathers helped care for them, played with them, and took them on outings had fewer behavioral problems in early childhood and a lower likelihood of delinquency as adolescents.

are choosing our home, our services and our facilities.

1. At Conception. Biologist David Haig has detected that some paternal genes push a fetus to extract as much nourishment and energy from the mother as possible while some maternal genes seek to deliver the fetus only as much as it needs.

5. Early Childhood. Researchers have shown that fathers have more impact on language development than mothers. It is hypothesized that since mothers spend more time with children, they’re more likely to use words with which kids are most familiar, while fathers, less attuned to the child’s “linguistic comfort zone”, introduce a wider vocabulary. 6. The Teen Years. It has been widely known that girls with absent fathers tend to reach puberty earlier and have higher rates of teen pregnancy. Psychologist Sarah Hill of Texas Christian University states that she believes a father’s absence delivers girls a subconscious cue about “the mating system they are born into: Men will not stick around, so they need to find mates quickly.” Their genes then effectively push the girls into early puberty. Dr. Raeburn’s book identifies how the role of the father is distinctly different from that of the mother, and that embracing a fathers’ significance in the lives of children is a benefit to all. “Do Father’s Matter?”….the answer is a clear YES!

Here’s the dirt on...DIRT!

by Doug Scott, Redeem Your Ground | Exterior Design Studio

“When Transportation is the need. Great service is guaranteed.” Call us today for your Personal and Business transportation needs!

I love dirt. I love the way it feels between my fingers and toes. I love the way it smells. I love what it represents. I love seeing it on my kids’ hands and faces because of what they’ve likely been up to. I just love dirt. But all that dirt is to me…it’s not nearly what it is to my plants. But unfortunately most of us take dirt for granted when planting our plants. Dirt’s dirt…right? Well, no…it’s not. Once you understand the basics of “dirt”…err, “soil” in the gardening world…you’ll understand why it is so important to your plants. Although not as easy as just throwing a plant into the ground, it is actually quite easy to make sure that your plants’ soil needs are met so that they live long and healthy lives. Put very simply, your plants need to be able to spread their roots…and they need to have both air and water circulating about their roots. Both of these things allow your plants to absorb what they need to in order to grow big, strong, and green! On one in the spectrum you have soil with high clay content…and on the other end, high sand content. And it’s the difference between the size of particle that makes up clay vs. sand that determines the “type of home” that the soil provides your plants. • Having tiny particles that pack very closely together, clay-heavy soils are almost impossible for water or air to penetrate. As a result, water won’t drain from the effective clay pot you’ve dug for your plant…so its roots will likely become swamped and impacted. Sounds lovely, huh?

PERSONAL: • Concerts • Braves Games • Weddings • Daycamps • Night Out • Senior Outings

• On the other extreme, sand-heavy soils have very large particles…so air and water run right through it. So as a result, nutrients are washed away and the soil dries out very quickly – not giving the roots time to absorb what little there is to absorb. So as you guessed it, a good healthy soil is a balance between the two…actually a mix of the two. Gardeners will say that the perfect soil is “loamy” – which is composed of particles of varying sizes… allowing for both greater aeration and appropriate water retention. So not only will your plants’ roots be able to grow deep and wide, but the soil will retain both the water and nutrients needed for your plants to thrive. One quick and easy way to figure out what type of soil you have is…take a fist of soil and lightly squeeze your hand together. If it keeps its shape, your soil is good. If it breaks apart real easily, it’s sandy. If you can squeeze it between your finger and thumb and it forms a ribbon of sorts, it has too much clay. And if you’re here in Atlanta you’re very likely dealing with clay-heavy soil.

The good thing is, if you’re soil isn’t “loamy”…and odds are it isn’t, all you’ll need to do is amend it with organic matter when you’re planting your plants. And don’t get freaked out by the fancy word “amend”…all you’re doing is “adding and mixing in” some organic material (e.g., compost)…that’s it. To do that…

Your Heating & Air Conditioning Experts

• Dig a hole about twice the size of the pot your plant came in.

Sales • Service • Installation Let our experienced technicians fix it right the first time!

• Shovel some organic material into said hole – 1 part organic material to every 2 or 3 parts original soil. • Drag the original soil back into the hole and mix it all together. You just amended your soil! • Now all you need to do is make room for your plant...then put it in the ground (after loosening the roots a little)…and backfill with the excess mixed soil…pack it down and water. That’s it…not only have you given your plants the home it needs to thrive, but the nutrients it needs as well…at least for the first year. Beyond that you’ll likely need to fertilize and possibly add a bit more organic material…but that’s for another article. Until then, I hope you find some time to redeem a little ground…perhaps by planting a plant with just the right kind of dirt!
