Are You Willing To DIE for Pain Relief? Why would anyone choose to risk their health with NSAIDs while there are HIGH QUALITY, SAFE and POWERFUL pain relievers like DOCTOR’S BLEND CURCUMIN available? Just read one user’s experience: “First, I have not received any compensation or kick-backs for my review of this product. Due to a diagnosis of positional sleep apnea, I’ve been forced to sleep on my side for the past 6 months. The pressure pain that I’ve been experiencing has been unbearable to the point of keeping me up most of the night. I’ve had extreme pain in my arms, legs, hips, etc. The pain has been a direct result of the pressure that I’ve put on all of these areas due to the side sleeping. Up until now, I’ve tried using Aleve, other NSAID’s, as well as non NSAID formulas. Nothing worked until I tried the Curcumin. I take 3 capsules a day. At any rate, the only thing I know for sure is that this product is a miracle. These continue to work so well for me that I just bought 2 more bottles. I’ve experienced absolutely no pain whatsoever since starting on them several weeks ago. I continue to be astounded by how well they work.” – Keith Reinhardt Hi, I’m Dr. Jimi Sharomi, and as a pharmacist, I’m always digging for more options to help my patients. I turn to natural products so people don’t need to worry about side effects, but more importantly I look for products that deliver MASSIVE results. And you won’t believe the MASSIVE solution I’ve come across for pain…that is until you try it like I did. I’m sure everyone’s heard of Turmeric as a kitchen spice, but when you hear about it in the media just remember it’s the curcuminoids in Turmeric that are worth anything. If you were to just eat turmeric or buy some grocery store brand you’ll notice it doesn’t do ANYTHING –AT ALL because hardly even a fraction is absorbed in the gut. Regular turmeric just goes down the toilet, (along with wasted money) but there are a few reputable labs that know how to get a 95% Curcumin yield into your blood stream…And I assure you, at a WHOPPING 750mg Curcumin per pill, this DOCTOR’s BLEND will drive your pain into REMISSION!

“This product has been miraculous for me. Until I started taking this product I’ve been dealing with consistent excruciating lower back pain. I go to my chiropractor regularly, use my exercise ball and recently purchased a back brace yet my pain was still abounding… It was real! Was reluctant to try this Turmeric, yet I must say that after taking 2 per day, for 1 week…the benefit is that I’m pain free! This product is simply outstanding.” – Nathan

What Makes Doctor’s Blend Work So Well? DOCTOR’s BLEND CURCUMIN is effective for pain because it is one of the most effective anti-inflammatories and anti-oxidants around. In almost all cases of pain, there is a free-radical that floats around and causes damage to soft tissues and joints. This causes the body to release substance P (a chemical that sends pain signals to the brain) which in turn sets up inflammation. CURCUMIN completely quenches free-radicals and depletes nerve endings of substance P. Thus DOCTOR’s BLEND CURCUMIN is an EXTREMELY effective option for treating chronic pain because it not only prevents the cause of most types of pain but also interrupts pain signals sent through the nerves! So whether you have rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, muscle soreness, gout, knee pain, tendonitis, shin splints, fibromyalgia, back pain, plantar fasciitis, frequent headaches, bone pain, post-surgical pain or any other unbearable pain DOCTOR’s BLEND CURCUMIN is the fail-proof answer you’re searching for. Are you tired of living in constant pain? Now there’s reason to celebrate! DOCTOR’S BLEND CURCUMIN is a one-and-done powerhouse that will help you to work PAIN FREE and sleep PAIN FREE. DOCTOR’S BLEND CURCUMIN’s unmatched formulation will provide unprecedented pain relief – without a prescription and without risk of side effects or addiction. At long last... you can erase your pain with a breakthrough medicine that is so promising if it were synthetic, major drug companies would be fighting to patent it. And obtaining this fantastic relief comes without risk –if after complete use of DOCTOR’S BLEND CURCUMIN it has not relieved your pain simply return the empty bottle for a full refund of your purchase. So Get DOCTOR’s BLEND CURCUMIN for just $33.98 today if you want to feel better!

Have you heard the latest from the FDA about drugs like Advil, Aleve, Excedrin and Motrin? They’ve always warned about the long-term risks of HEART ATTACKS AND STROKES while taking these drugs but now they’ve also added even SHORT TERM USE of NSAIDs can have the same risk. To be exact the FDA warns: “the risk of heart attack or stroke can occur as early as the first week of using an NSAID. NSAIDs can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke in patients with or without heart disease or risk factors for heart disease.” So the question that begs to be asked is…

Gifts From Heaven by Mark Orler

Every year around this time my wife and I experience the same delusion that most parents enjoy as the Christmas holiday looms ahead; we think it will have some favorable impact on our children’s behavior. “If you don’t clean your room and make your bed, you-know-who will just fly right over this house and all you may get is some coal in your stocking Christmas morning!”

The Leaders in Property Management

Child-rearing experts consistently agree that bribery and empty-threats are weak weapons when it comes to motivating your precious miscreant, but for some reason both those options become the go-to resources the day after Halloween and extend through the 25th of December. It is as if we are fighting a battle in the Age of Technology using our Stone Age tools. I fell into this trap the other evening when I couldn’t get my two sons to calm down at bedtime. They were in bed playing a game of “Smell my Feet,” which, as the name implies, involves two or more persons attempting to force an olfactory experience on another person who probably doesn’t wish to have that particular scent in their memory-repertoire of odors. After watching them play for a few minutes I honestly couldn’t determine who the “winner” was in this matchup as both parties cackled with glee at alternately being “dealt” and “smelt” by the other to the point where they were both gagging and howling with laughter at one another. “That STINKS Gabriel! Great job,” my youngest son exclaimed, “but try to guess what I stepped in?” This he did while shoving his foot near his older brother’s face. “Boys!” I yelled, “Both your feet are going to smell like coal if you don’t start obeying me and go to sleep.”

“Coal?” they asked in unison.

“Yes,” I fumbled, “Santa brings coal to misbehaving kids instead of’s a known fact.”

Mandatory Renters Insurance

The youngest reached over and grabbed an iPad sitting next to the bed and asks, “Siri, please tell me what ‘cole’ is and if it smells?” “Okay,” Siri replied, “here are some results for ‘cold smells.’” “So Santa brings Salami?” asked my youngest while looking at a series of pictures of cold cuts that Siri had provided, “that’s not too bad.” After a brief discussion on the difference between sandwich meats and carbon-based fossil fuels, I reiterated the need for obedience and demanded that they get in bed or face the wrath of the anti-Santa in a few weeks. As I lay there with them, listening to their prayers and hearing them discuss what their Christmas wishes were and what gifts they wanted to give their Mommy, I silently thought about how wonderful a time of year this is and how each moment with them was a gift from Heaven that I continually get to unwrap. Then I spoke through my pinched nose, “Johnny Lee, what exactly did you step in!?” Kids 1, Dad 0, in Smell my Feet.

Stonehaven To Launch an Upper School Program Congratulations to the StoneHaven School! They have recently announced plans to launch an upper school in August of 2020. The school will begin with a ninth grade and will continue expanding one grade at a time until they add a twelfth grade by the 2023-2024 school year. Established in 2004 and located in Marietta since August of 2013, Stonehaven is a classical Christian school focused on the cultivation of Christian virtue and the pursuit of academic excellence.

Why an Upper School? “Classical Christian education offers a radically different approach to education, from kindergarten through twelfth grade,” stated Gordon Hwang, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. “The leadership at Stonehaven believes our Christian community desires and deserves a Christ-centered classical school that completes all three phases of the Trivium: The Grammar Phase (K-sixth); The Logic Phase (seventh-ninth); and The Rhetoric Phase (tenth-twelfth). Our children, and parents, have approached the school’s leadership and expressed the desire for an upper school at Stonehaven. There is a significant need not only in our current community but in the metro-Atlanta area for a classical Christian school that serves students kindergarten through twelfth grade.”

Why August, 2020? “Determining when Stonehaven could be ready to begin a ninth grade was a difficult calculation,” stated Brett Edwards, Head of School. “It was not made without significant prayer and deliberation. Stonehaven’s leadership believes an Important component ensuring the success of this launch will be effectively partnering with the school community in establishing a like-minded vision and plan for a Christ-centered classical upper school.” Questions about staffing, facilities, enrichment programs, curriculum, tuition, and much more must be answered between now and August of 2020. Stonehaven will be engaging parents and other school stakeholders extensively to help throughout this process. In addition, the school is excited to find creative avenues for the students to participate in the development of the upper school.

MUST Toy Shops Seeking Volunteers and Donations “With help from the community, we can ensure that 4,000 children in need living in Cherokee and Cobb counties wake up to presents on Christmas morning,” said MUST Ministries Pres. and CEO Ike Reighard. MUST helps almost 30,000 people a year and 70 percent of them are children. The annual Toy Shops are being launched with a request for both donations and volunteers. Volunteer groups and individuals are needed to staff MUST Ministries’ two Christmas Toy Shops opening Dec. 1 and running through Dec. 21. Located in Marietta and Woodstock, the Toy Shops allow struggling parents to shop for toys, necessities and winter wear at no cost in a department store-style environment. Volunteers are needed primarily during the day and can help in a variety of ways. “We need greeters to check people in at the front desk, personal shoppers to assist our guests, checkout teams, stockers and sorters as well as runners who assist guests getting to their cars with gifts,” he explained. “It’s a perfect way for businesses, churches, neighborhoods, sports teams, families and other groups to serve.” To sign up for a volunteer shift, go to and click on the Toy Shop. For more information, email Donations are also needed to stock MUST’s Christmas Toy. Everything in the shops is new, however MUST does accept “like new” bikes. The most needed items include: • Blankets • Toys (ethnically diverse dolls, board and electronic games, books, bikes/helmets, jewelry, sports equipment, electronics and stuffed animals) • Gifts for teens (jewelry, skateboards, wallets, purses, belts, hair dryers, curling irons, makeup kits, nail kits, sports equipment, athletic shoes, cologne/perfume) • Socks and underwear • Hats, scarves, gloves • Baby items Donations can be dropped off at MUST Donation Center at 1280 Field Parkway between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.

WHY IS ART SO EXPENSIVE? By Bernard and Jen Nolan

Art at the Park House Opens in Acworth The newest space for art exhibition and education in Acworth opens with a public reception the evening of Saturday, December 2. The Art at the Park House, named for its proximity to Logan Park, is the centerpiece of a recently approved nonprofit, the Acworth Arts Alliance. The Park House is located at 4425 Cherokee Street and is a restored historic building connected to one of the earliest African-American businesses in the city. It will host art exhibits as well as offer classes for children and adults taught by local artists. “We look forward to sharing the works of many local artists with the community,” said Executive Director Cathy Green. “We will be offering art classes for children and adults early next year,” she said. “Thank you to the city of Acworth, Parks and Recreation and everyone who has been involved in this project. Their vision and commitment to preserve and honor the city’s important history and bring the arts to Acworth is greatly appreciated,” said Green. The opening reception will be Saturday, Dec. 2, from 6 to 9 p.m. with regular hours beginning Tuesday, Dec. 5. The center will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m., except for holidays. Check out the website at or call 678-543-5777.

At first glance, the price of original artwork can give most people sticker shock especially when it reaches into the thousands of dollars. You may even think that it is overpriced and the artist grabbed the price out of the air. There is actually much more to pricing art than most are aware of. Here are a few things that an artist considers when they price their work:

BEFORE STARTING THE PIECE Traveling to painting sites for photo references or onsite studies Coming up with creative ideas, preliminary sketches and research for more conceptual pieces Renting studio space Advertising and promotion with websites, postcards, etc. Supplies: paints, brushes, easel desk, painting surface, thinners, solvents, varnishes

TIME TO CREATE Surface preparation of painting surface The many many hours it takes to complete a piece of art Profession photo documentation of artwork Framing, presentation Shipping and packing Gallery commission (galleries typically take 40-50% of sale price) An artist is a business owner and must be conscience of their expenses. They should be looking at comparable art in the area and what it is selling for. Comparable is key. If one artist has been consistently selling art for twenty years and has a large list of shows, awards, in most cases they cannot charge the same. Basic economics still applies to the art world and when an artist is popular and is only producing so many pieces in their lifetime, the value will go up. With all of this said, most artist will not achieve grand notoriety and they create out of a labor of love. Even when selling a piece means breaking even or less, they march on and continue to produce what so earnestly springs forth from them. So the next time you want to buy a piece of art consider these points and how much actually went from a mere idea to something you can bring with you.

“An artist is not paid for his labor but for his vision.” ~ James McNeil Whistler

For all you do, For all for youyou do, a gift a gift for you

by Dr. John Kayal It may only be December, but why not beat the crowd and get a jump start on your New Year’s resolution? A great weight loss program should always include a well-balanced diet of lean meats and vegetables along with proper exercise, but occasionally we all could use a little help for those bits of stubborn fat that just won’t go away. With Coolsculpting, the only FDA cleared, non-surgical fat reduction treatment, it’s never been easier to begin looking and feeling the way you’ve always wanted to.

Heralded as the world’s number one non-invasive fat reduction process, Coolsculpting is both proven safe and effective. With more than 5 million treatments performed worldwide, both celebrities and countless other patients are raving over the results. Coolsculpting is designed to eliminate stubborn fat from 9 different areas, so each treatment is customized to your body and goals. The treatment process is very comfortable and safe. The clinician will apply a gel pad and applicator to the treatment area and then all you need to do is sit back and relax. You may feel some coldness to the treatment area but no discomfort. Treatment sessions can range from 30 minutes to 1 hour so feel free to finish sending those emails, finish that book you’ve been meaning to, or get caught up on Netflix shows. Once the fat is frozen and undergoes cryolipolysis, your body will naturally process the fat and eliminate the cells leaving a more sculpted you. With no downtime afterwards, you can safely resume all normal activities.

Coolsculpting utilizes a process called cyrolipolysis to completely eliminate the adipocyte, or fat cell. This is an important distinction versus traditionally losing weight, which shrinks the fat cell but keeps it intact. By destroying the cell, it prevents any future fat storage. The total amount of fat cells in our bodies is determined sometime in our teenage years, so once it’s gone, it’s gone forever. Scientists from Harvard discovered the effects of cryolipolysis as they observed that some children who ate popsicles got dimples in their cheeks. They studied this and discovered that the popsicles were freezing and destroying the fat cells in their cheeks. These scientists took their studies and created a way to safely control the cooling to eliminate fat while keeping the skin and other bodily structures completely unharmed.

As we enter this holiday season, one of the comments I hear most often from moms is, “It’s so hard to get my family to eat healthy, especially around this time of year!” Now let me tell you, ladies, I get it! With pies, cookies, chocolates, candy canes, and all the other traditional treats that accompany this season, it is next to impossible to keep myself from indulging a little too much... How in the world could I expect to keep my husband and kiddos from eating all of those sugar-filled, processed goodies?! Well, here’s the thing: it’s about BALANCE, PLANNING, and PREPARATION. In our house we implement the 90/10 rule... 90% of the time we are grain-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, avoid all processed sugars, and make solid, conscious food choices we are proud of. The other 10% of the time we let ourselves indulge a bit. We splurge for that “pizza night,” organic Thai food, or specialty latte. We can do this because we know that it’s rare, so when it does happen it’s special. That’s called balance. During the other 90% of the time, we are able to stay on track and make wise food choices because we plan and prepare for it. On Sunday night I plan out our meals for the week so I know what groceries I need to get. Then when Monday rolls around, all of our food is in the refrigerator, ready to be cooked, and all I need to do is look at the schedule to see what I’ll be making. I have veggies cut up for snacks and almond flour, honey, and stevia-sweetened chocolate chips on hand in case we have a sudden craving for sweets and need a batch of paleo chocolate chip cookies. The key to making good choices in the moment when your cravings kick in is having already prepared for that moment! Now, that’s all well and good for about ten and a half months of the year... But what about now? The holidays? HOW is it possible to avoid all the junk and unhealthy food this time of year and keep you and your family feeling good with nutritious, healthy treats? Again, it’s about balance, planning, and preparation. Make a decision as to which days/meals are going to be your “10%” and then plan and prepare for the rest! I’ve found that the best way to do this and not feel overwhelmed, especially as a mom with littles that may be picky eaters, is to have a handful of simple, easy to make, delicious recipes on hand that are healthy! Here are two of my favorite go-to’s that are so good your family won’t even know they’re healthy and are so easy to make it will take you less than 10 minutes!

CARAMEL DIP: 1 cup coconut oil 1 cup maple syrup 1/2 cup almond butter 1 tbsp vanilla 3/4-1 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt Heat coconut oil and maple syrup in a pot on stove or in a glass bowl in oven or toaster oven for a few minutes. (We don’t use a microwave!) Add almond butter, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt and whisk until smooth. Refrigerate to harden and then ENJOY! MASHED SWEET POTATOES: 3 medium sweet potatoes 1/3 cup maple syrup 3/4 tsp salt 3/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice (or just cinnamon and nutmeg) 1/2 tsp vanilla Chop and steam sweet potatoes until soft (Approx. 15 minutes.) Once potatoes are soft, mix until smooth (you can use a hand mixer or large mixer, either one will work.) Add syrup, salt, pumpkin pie spice, and vanilla and mix together until smooth! These two recipes are also a great option to take to a holiday party or get-together. Your family and friends will love you for bringing such a delicious dish and they’ll love you even more when they find out it’s good for them! If you’re looking for more recipes like these (chocolate chip paleo cookies, anyone??!) and even more tips for staying healthy during the holidays, join Simply Thriving Mama on Facebook!

THE SCIENCE OF BEAUTY 5 GUARANTEED WAYS TO LOOK OLDER THAN YOUR AGE By Eliana Ocheseanu - The Skin Whisperer at Refinery21 studio As an esthetician working hands-on with clients, looking younger is the most common request I get, especially from clients over 40. To help address this concern, I provide professional facial treatments, expert problem-solving advice, and personalized home care routines specifically designed for each of my clients’ unique skin concerns. I recommend products with brightening vitamin C, plumping hyaluronic acid, protecting SPF and firming peptides. However, being in the “appearance” business, I can confidently say that many people overlook other important factors that

Awesomeness baked fresh daily.

contribute to aging. While good products and practices are excellent for making the skin look younger and healthier, these five things ensure you will look older.

1. Never changing your hairstyle, clothing style or makeup. Trends change and styles change, so it’s never good to get into a rut. Wearing an outdated hairstyle and the same makeup and clothes, day in and day out will only make you look older. When you think about someone who looks great for her age, more than likely you think of someone who is fashionable and has a unique sense of style. 2. Going gray. It’s a fact that gray hair is associated with getting older. After all, it most commonly shows up after age 40. It’s only logical that letting your natural color show through will make you look older. I’m definitely not saying that gray hair is not attractive; I’m just saying that it’s a sign of age. Consult with a trusted hair colorist if you’re up for changing your look. 3. Missing eyebrows. Women’s eyebrows tend to disappear with age, while men’s are more likely to grow wild. You should use an eyebrow pencil, powder or both to fill in ¬fading brows. Visit a high-end cosmetics ¬counter, and ask the stylist to show you how. You may need to try several products to find out what works best. Also, women tend not to notice increased facial hair (especially stray hairs) on the chin and upper lip, a result of hormonal change. Pluck!

4. Smoking and not wearing sunscreen. I’m sure it’s no surprise, but these two things will definitely make you look older. Smoking depletes vitamin C and creates fine lines around the mouth and eyes due to the constant use of those muscles to pull a drag out of a cigarette. UV rays are responsible for collagen depletion as well as stubborn hyperpigmentation. Both smoking and not wearing daily sunscreen is commonplace for so many women in Europe. 5. Not whitening your teeth. Teeth naturally darken, stain and yellow with age, so not whitening them will definitely contribute to you looking older. In summary, looking older than your age usually comes from not being proactive and letting “Mother Nature” do her thing. Eliana has over 20 years of experience in skin care. She has also trained and managed estheticians at MAC Day spa, formerly Sanda Ganè European day spa. She is now the owner of Refinery21 studio and she is always available for free consultations. Tech Dad

by James Floyd Kelly

When my youngest son was 2, he had this little scooter that he loved to ride around our cul-de-sac. He had to push himself forward on it, and this action caused the toes of the shoes to wear out fast. Toddler shoes aren’t cheap, and he was also a bit picky about his shoes. Trying to find a way to extend the life of his shoes became a mission. I’ll tell you how I solved it after three questions and a short story. First question: Do the chargers for any of your electronics devices sometimes break near the plug or become frayed? For some reason, the more expensive the device, the more likely the adapter/charger is made from something cheap. It makes sense that manufacturers will try to cut costs wherever they can, and I think many people just assume that it’s normal to buy a replacement charger for their tablets or phones when the original wears out.

There are 1,440 minutes in a day,

30 MINUTE CIRCUIT Fast full body workout

Workouts start every 3 minutes

Recently, my iPhone charger developed a break in the rubber covering near the plug. I’ll include a photo here for you to see. Rather than toss it and buy a new one, however, I opened up my fridge and pulled out a packet of Sugru.

Second question: What is Sugru? Glad you asked. I met the creator, Jane ni Dhulchaointigh (yep, that’s her name – she’s from Ireland), in California about six years ago when she was showing off her new invention at the Bay Area Maker Faire. I was blown away by this stuff – it’s a moldable, waterproof material that bonds to just about anything but when it cures (after about 24 hours) it retains a rubber-like consistency instead of hardening like clay.

Work every muscle, every time

I’m serious – this stuff sticks to just about everything! Wood, metal, glass, ceramics, leather, plastic, and much more. And this ability to bond to most materials makes it perfect for repairing things. Many of the uses that Jane demonstrated involved joining two different materials and keeping them together. Over the years, fans of Sugru have come up with all kinds of ways for using the material, and you can view a library of uses by visiting and clicking on the “Uses & Projects” button. You’ve probably already guessed by now that the solution to my damaged iPhone charger involved Sugru. I opened one of the tiny packages; as you can see in the photo, each package contains a small gum-sized amount of Sugru. You can roll it and stretch it and flatten it… it’s stays flexible for about 30 minutes. I put the thin cord in the middle of the Sugru and then wrapped it up and smoothed the seam. Some careful smoothing around the end of the plug was needed, and then I let it sit for a day. Now, the cable is sealed and still flexible! A $3.00 packet of Sugru saved me $10-30 since I didn’t have to buy an official Apple charger or a knock-off. And now let me return to my son’s shoes. Sugru comes in ten colors – black, white, blue, red, green, yellow, orange, brown, silver, and pink. You can mix colors, too. The rubber toes of my son’s shoes were a distinct gray color, so I took a bit of black Sugru and mixed in little bits of white Sugru until the color was a match. I then placed the piece of Sugru over the holes at the tips of both shoes and blended the edges into the meshlike cloth material. The Sugru lasted just as long as the original rubber tips, but only cost me a few $ instead of a new pair of shoes. (I even got some free Sugru sent my way when I shared my success on Sugru’s website.) Third question: Why did I pull the Sugru out of my fridge? (You did catch that, right?) Sugru has a shelf life that’s printed on the tiny packet (usually about a year), but storing it in the fridge is supposed to extend the life of an unopened package up to 3x as long. You can buy the various colors of Sugru over at, but if you’re okay with plain black, they sell three packets of black Sugru for $10 at Target in the hardware area where you find glues and tapes. This helps ensure the figures quoted to Buyers at the beginning are substantially the same at closing.

Big, Delicious Appetizer Boards!

We love everything about the appetizer board! It’s relatively simple, fun to create and oh, so pleasing to the eye. Grab the largest cutting board or platter that you own and design a masterpiece for your guests over the holidays. The following tips will help you in creating the perfect board. Bon Appetite! You’ll need a few things to get started:

Cheeses: We recommend using 2- 3 different varieties and textures. Selections can include, Brie, cheddar, Havarti and Swiss. These are general crowd pleasers if you’re hosting a large group. For the more adventurous appetites, a strong blue cheese, smoked Gouda or Oka are great choices. Cut the blocks into neat triangles and arrange the slices in a line for your one-of –a-kind platter. Labeling the cheeses is a nice touch.

Bread or Crackers: Put out big loaves of rustic bread like Italian, an olive focaccia or a French baguette. Cut a few slices to begin with and leave a knife so people can cut their own. A basket of crackers is also a nice touch.

Gas LogsEtc., Inc. Meat: Salami, prosciutto, and hard dried spicy salami are usually staples on an appetizer board. You can refill as needed. Variety is also key here. Don’t be afraid to get creative at the deli counter. Fruit: Anything in season is a bonus, but during the winter the selection can be limited. Grapes, peaches, figs, sliced green apples or pear, strawberries, melon and anything that tastes good with cheese. The more variety the better your board. Cut the fruit into bite sized pieces so it easy for your guests to grab.

Briny olives and tangy pickles are another perfect addition to the board. Honey: Add a small ramekin of honey with a dipper so guests can drizzle honey on top of their cheese if they’d like.

Olive Oil: A small dish of olive oil with rosemary is a perfect compliment to crusty bread.

Gas LogsEtc., Inc.

Dried Fruit & Nuts: Check out the bulk sections in your local markets to find dried apricots, pitted dates, pecans and walnuts.

Breadsticks: with a fancy mortadella or pate are optional but decadent nibbles.

Use your creativity to arrange the items on the your cutting board or platter. Make sure to leave plenty of small spreaders and cheese knives on your board. Let the festivities begin!

DECORATING YOUR FRONT DOOR FOR THE HOLIDAYS by Kathy Burns-Millyard With gray skies surrounding your home in early winter, things can definitely begin to look stark and somewhat depressing. But hang a wreath or swag on your front door and your home can spring to life with energy. Cuttings of evergreen are sweet compensation for the leaves that are missing from most of the trees, and the tart hues of winterberries are reminders that nature has not forgotten about color, even though the garden is no longer in bloom. Add wide ribbons and twinkling lights and holiday spirit brims over. The Victorians, who never willingly left a surface unadorned, are sometimes credited with the custom of hanging Christmas wreaths on front doors. In recent years, front-door displays have taken many forms, from flashy tinsel wreaths with silver-metallic bows to electric light garlands that spell out “Season’s Greetings”. The most eloquent outdoor ornaments, however, are usually simple and natural, made from the hearty fruit and greenery that flourish while al-

most all the landscapes hibernates. Winter’s harvest abounds with unexpected textures and shapes, like spiky pinecones and smooth eucalyptus seeds. And the palette is more than the red and green we expect. We do get those colors of course in abundance: scarlet cranberries, blood-red rose hips, crimson Pyracantha and a cavalcade of greenery-silver green eucalyptus, blue-green cedar, deep green boxwood, and the lovely chartreuse and olive green of the intriguingly named Golden Hinoki False Cypress. There is also the tangy purple of privet berries, the spongy gold of kumquats and yellow pods, and the wild red centers of bitter sweet. To make decorations for your front door, you may find all of the raw materials you need growing in your own yard or garden. But if you don’t have access to them, a visit to your local garden center, florist or home store is sure to help you bring the Christmas spirit and beauty to your front door.

Start Off On The Right Paw! by Amber Burckhalter The holidays are upon us! I always look forward to enjoying the celebrations and time spent with my family this time of year. I also look forward to the influx of puppies that follows Christmas and Hanukkah - little balls of flying fur who are in desperate need of training and socialization and who are trailed by new owners who are sleep deprived and in a bit of shock as to what the cute little puppy has become: a whirling dervish!!! Often, by the time we see these puppies, they are already engaged in some behaviors and habits that the new family is not enjoying so much. So, to help alleviate this somewhat, this month’s article focuses on bringing a puppy in your home and starting off on the right paw.

Merry Christmas

Routine - Every dog needs a routine and puppies need a routine even more! Decide when, where, and how the puppy will get exercise, sleep, play, train and potty. REMEMBER – when, where and how. From there, decide who is responsible for puppy and when. Stick to this routine, even on weekends. Dogs and puppies on solid routines are faster and easier to housebreak, crate train, teach basic obedience skills, and sleep through the night. Puppies on routines are less likely to have behavioral challenges, housebreaking problems, separation anxiety, or destructive chewing. Crate - Use a crate from day one. Dogs are naturally den dwelling animals and most puppies feel much more secure and safe in a crate. It is NOT punishment but, rather, what they prefer. There are many different types of crates from plastic to metal, as well as fabric crates and they all have different pros and cons. Remember that a crate should only be large enough for your puppy to stand up and turn around in as well as lie down, but not so big that it encourages soiling in the crate. Feed your puppy in their crate. Give them safe toys in their crate. Put them in their crate at random times throughout the day and night. The crate SHOULD NOT only be used when leaving, or at bedtime. If you follow these tips, puppy will accept the crate as their own space, will feel safe in their crate and will be safer as well.

Food - Make sure to bring home the food that the rescue or breeder has been feeding your puppy. You may choose to continue that food, or you may choose to switch to another brand. If you choose to switch to another brand, make sure you mix the current food with the new food. Gradually switch your pups’ food to the new food over several days to avoid gastrointestinal distress. Choose a high-quality food like those sold at K-9 Coach and make sure to feed the appropriate amount recommended on the bag or by your vet.

attention and gifts!

Space - The single biggest mistake new puppy owners make is giving the puppy too much freedom, space and full access to the house. Loose puppies are puppies in trouble! Choose a safe area that is puppy proof: no wires, furniture that may get chewed on, rugs or carpets that may be hit with a potty accident or family shoes, etc. You may choose to fence off a portion of your home with baby gates. This is highly effective and easily temporary. When the puppy is not in his or her crate, or with you, they can play safely in this space. Leave safe toys and interactive toys. as well as a small bed for the puppy to lie on in this space. Often, families choose to create this space where they spend time as a family so as to include the new puppy in family time and make sure the family can watch for when the puppy may need a potty break.

family and playing

Toys - Puppies are very curious, exploring their world and teething. These all lead to chewed up legs of chairs and tables, or even shoes! Provide your pup with safe, interactive toys to both entertain them and teach them to chew appropriate items. Toys that can be stuffed with treats or dinner are perfect for interactive play as well as good for teething. Remember to remove any toy your puppy is chewing up or swallowing and to avoid toys that mimic your personal items or your children’s toys. Giving an old shoe, for example, will teach puppy that shoes are acceptable to chew.
