OUR DIABETIC CLIENTS ACE THEIR A1C EXAM WITH THIS NATURAL SECRET

This Is Total Blood Sugar Assurance What if you KNEW your blood sugar would stay right in the middle of the healthy range—and you could go on with your life and not have to worry about it so much? Just think—with all that freed up time and energy, you could start really living again... You could...STOP worrying about every little thing you eat...START loving your healthy food again...STOP suffering through lectures from “health nags”...AND START enjoying real blood sugar support! This discovery is so exciting you may never worry about keeping healthy blood sugar again... When researchers gave BERBERINE to people and monitored their blood sugar, something almost unbelievable happened. Fasting blood glucose improved—in just 90 days. That’s FAST, but that’s not all; the extract also improved A1C levels—which means it could help maintain healthy blood sugar over the long term, too. One natural compound that improves fasting glucose levels—AND helps keep your numbers steady over time...not to mention these benefits come WITHOUT side effects! And don’t think for a second that just because it’s natural that it doesn’t really work…

Local Clientele Found This To Work Better Than Their Prescriptions “Berberine seems to work great for me. Quit taking Lantus and reduced dosage on Victoza. Still maintain around 125-140 blood sugar. Saving $150 on Insulin every month ain’t bad either; would highly recommend this.” – Peter Cline, Marietta “After nearly 20 years as a Diabetic, insulin has never controlled my numbers. I would always fluctuate to 300 and even at times 400’s. Since taking your Berberine my numbers steadily dropped from 270’s and my last reading was 132. I have been able to cut back on insulin without crashing …will be seeing you again soon.” – Alan Franklin, Marietta “Ever since I started your Berberine, I’ve never had to worry about my blood sugars. It took my numbers below what Metformin could so I quit taking it. I always used to feel bad when I took Metformin but since taking Berberine all my numbers run good and my doctor has no complaints. I have so much more energy now, my son was blown away to hear his 74 year old dad put a brand new roof on the house all by myself! I never run out of this.” – Tom Corbin, Hiram “I got a real shock when my doctor told me I had diabetic sugar levels, [I] was never aware it was an issue until my numbers ran in the 180’s. Then I saw your ad about Berberine and said I better try this. My numbers steadily improved to where now if I watch what I eat my numbers average in the 90’s.” – Doug Evans, Acworth “In the past my glucose readings have always stayed between 180-200 even while taking Glipizde & Metformin. But now, if I halfway watch what I eat my readings are

around 105-118 after taking Berberine.” – Greg Robinson, Kennesaw “When I was diagnosed as a diabetic my glucose ran in the 300’s, when I took Metformin it came down to about 180. Since taking Berberine my numbers average 110115. Berberine works well for me and I’ve told other people about it.” – Cesar Janeira, Acworth “Just wanted you to know the Berberine has been a perfect substitute to my prescriptions. I no longer need them since taking the Berberine and watching what I eat. You’ve helped me more than any doctor I’ve been to.” – Steve H, Acworth

Here’s The Good News…

No matter how out of control your diabetes has been, or how little you exercise or how much weight your doctor says you need to lose, you’re getting your second chance right now! Taking BERBERINE will result in something you may not have experienced in many years—the peace of mind that comes from KNOWING your blood sugar is staying healthy. While it’s unlikely you’ll find BERBERINE in the correct form and dosage elsewhere—you can find exactly what you need at our pharmacy. Don’t believe this will work? Get out your glucose monitor and take our 30day challenge …you’ll see for yourself. If you don’t get results after complete use, simply return the empty bottle for a no-hassle refund. Get THORNE BERBERINE-500 today on sale for $30.98 so you can shock your doctor at your next A1C check-up!

STYLE REPORT

by Tara Hill

Abraham Lincoln once said, “Everybody likes a compliment”. Mark Twain also said, “I can live for 2 months on a good compliment”. Today we live in a culture where cyber compliments are given constantly through “likes” or “shares” but have you noticed that an actual verbal complement is hard to come by? My official job title is stylist, make-up artist, and host and beauty expert but do you know what I really am? I am a CONFIDENCE BUILDER! Anyone with YouTube can learn how to put on make-up or pull together an amazing outfit. But what I realized long ago was what people really need to help them feel confident, amazing and beautiful is a cheerleader. With all the pressures in life, the negativity, social media and this celebrity obsessed culture we live in, it’s easy to let it get to you and then you start comparing yourself to others...this is NEVER a good idea.

“I am not beautiful like you. I am beautiful like me”. My 9- year old daughter was given a project at school. She was asked to write about how she could help the people in her community and this is what she said.

“There are many ways to help people in a community. You can do as little as holding a door for someone or as much as volunteering your time or giving money to people in need. To me there is one thing that we need to do more and that is giving a compliment. Giving someone a compliment will be the best gift you can give. It is a nice thing to do, people feel good about themselves and you will be lifting someone up. Things I have done is saying you look nice today and giving a smile. My motto is ‘even if you don’t like someone you don’t have to be friend’s, just give them a smile and walk away.’ Also, it’s easier to be kind then mean, and as the old saying said, “It is easier to make a smile then a frown’. To me compliments are more than saying something nice, they are a way to make a difference in someone’s life. When I get a compliment I feel good and you would too. If you want to do something nice, go give a compliment and brighten someone’s day.” I am so proud of her and her kind heart, she realizes what so many don’t...giving someone a compliment takes little time and no money, but can totally change someone’s life in a big way.

“Confidence is the secret to all beauty. It is the most beautiful accessory you could own”. I read an article written by a career coach named Marcy Tewete. One of the points that she stresses throughout her training is, “teaching yourself to see the best in others and regularly complimenting them will give you the ability to see the best in yourself, as well”.

“It is not narcissistic to enjoy a compliment it is human nature.” When I have a client in my chair, regardless if it is the President of the United States or the president of the PTA, my #1 job is to “create” confidence, make-up is just adding color. I love this statement, “Confidence, wear it like make-up”. That is the truth! There is not enough make-up nor name brand clothing that can cover someone’s insecurities.... be confident in yourself and help others. as well.

CHILDREN OF DIVORCE Collateral Damage by Mary B. Hammock, MSN, CPNP Each year more than one million children become collateral damage in their parent’s divorce. While I understand ending a marriage and dividing a family is a gut-wrenching decision, helping your children through the divorce and its aftermath MUST be top priority!

TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF Divorce is stressful and being a single parent can be overwhelming. Depression is common and it is necessary to minimize its effects by staying on routine, getting good rest, eating healthy and exercising regularly. Avoid pursuing mundane tasks, such as watching TV just to “zone out.” Seek counseling or medical advice as soon as possible as needed. Express your emotions with a peer of the same sex – not with your children. Aligning yourself with your children can develop an “us against the world” mentality and that will lead to hurt and trust issues. Expressing yourself to an opposite sex adult can be easily misinterpreted as a romantic interest instead of a caring ear. If you don’t have an adult you can go to for emotional support, consider a recovery support group. Set realistic expectations for yourself. You no longer have a partner to share the parenting load. Don’t try to do everything, just the important things. Take advantage of carpools, pick up a healthy meal and don’t over-extend your schedule.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR CHILDREN Many children think they had something to do with the divorce. It is extremely important to set the record straight. It may be necessary to give a kid-friendly explanation and to repeat why you chose divorce. Be truthful and respectful of your spouse, while avoiding blame. Tell your children that you love them and your feelings for them haven’t and will not change. It is extremely important that you be patient. Your children may seem to understand one day and be confused the next. Reassure them as often as you need too. Reassure them that both parents will be part of their lives and that things won’t always be easy but that they will work out. Your children must learn to cope with their new and changing circumstances- where they will live, will they have to move, who they will be with on holidays, can they still go to gymnastics, etc. Listen to your children’s feelings and schedule regular time with your children to talk about how they are feeling. Put your own emotions aside to keep from losing site of theirs. This should simply be a time of listening and understanding.

Keep your word. Being a reliable and predictable parent will help to rebuild your children’s trust. Keep your promises and do your best to be on time. This is extremely important in lowering anxiety- theirs and yours. Taking time for positive touch –hugging, rocking, hand-holding, even cuddling in bed to read - can provide security and help to restore trust. Children don’t get spoiled by too many hugs or comforting words. Resist the urge to drop routines and lavish them with gifts or let them break rules. When life calms down, you may have great difficulty with unruly behavior. Finally, be nice. If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing. Don’t put your children in the middle or use them to send messages back and forth. Communicate civilly with your ex and take negative discussions away from the children. If it is hard - work on it!! Remember, your children didn’t ask for this. Healthy Steps Pediatrics is helping to GROW healthy children one step at a time. Please contact us with any questions or concerns about your growing and changing family.

More than 20 million Americans suffer from peripheral neuropathy, a problem caused by damage to the nerves that supply your arms and legs. This painful condition interferes with your body's ability to transmit messages to your muscles, skin, joints, or internal organs. If ignored or mistreated, neuropathy can lead to irreversible health conditions. Why not get help by those trained to correct the major cause of peripheral neuropathy? Data from the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners' Job Analysis of Chiropractic lists arm and leg neuropathy as the second most common nerve problem treated by chiropractors. Often neuropathy is caused by a degenerating spine pressing on the nerve roots. This can happen in any of the vertebral joints from the neck all the way down to the tail bone.

The Single Most Important Solution To Your Neuropathy By using gentle techniques, I'm able to release the pressure that has built up on the nerve. This allows the nerve to heal and the symptoms to go away.

Listen to what some of our patients have to say about it:

“I came into NCS&N with extreme leg pain that caused a lack of sleep and decrease in activity. Now that I have been getting care I have a lot less pain and I am able to be more active. What amazed me the most is that I don’t have to take any medication and I feel that my nerves have healed a lot!” Thank you, Billy Johnston

“I originally came into the office seeking relief for symptoms of Diabetic Neuropathy. Since receiving treatments I have less pain, tingling and numbness in my legs and feet. I can walk longer, farther and my mobility has really improved! The doctors and staff here are very friendly and I am thankful for their concern of my wellbeing.” Thanks, Theresa Oglesby

What Makes a Gift the Best Ever?

by Leisa A. Bailey, Ph.D.

“It’s not how much we give but how much we put into giving.” ~M o t h e r T e r e s a ~

This holiday season can be a special time to share with family and friends. A time to honor traditions or establish new experiences to be cherished. While itLiseessential asing to ensure the holiday season is not exclusively focused on gifts, the art of gift giving and receiving Cen tegracious r is something to understand and value. Op

Every year it seems there is an opportunity to watch A Christmas Story which loops for 24 hours on Christmas Day. It’s a pretty special and wildly entertaining movie where a 9-yearold boy, Ralphie, aspires to receive his perfect gift, “an Official Red Rider Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Short Range Model Air Rifle”. At the end of this charming movie, Ralphie comments, it was “The greatest Christmas gift I had ever received, or would ever receive”. What made this gift so special was that in the end, despite universal condemnation of his desired object; Ralphie’s father deeply connected with his son and understood the power of satisfying his longing. This empathy and understanding was truly “the greatest Christmas gift.” What constitutes a “great gift” is based in part on a complex emotional experience. What is most desired or will be ultimately most cherished is not always obvious. Mind reading is typically not a strong skill in human nature and it’s pretty impossible to get inside another person’s brain. Additionally, we all bring individual perceptions, biases and customs to each decision. Truly considering and understanding the “other” when shopping for a gift is critical. While there is such variability in this process, there is one truth to always consider… thoughtful gifting is not about Lemptying easin a bank account. g Good gift shopping is about understanding, knowing, and consideration Centeof another. In fact, r good gift shopping is very reflective of the habits and skills involved in maintaining good Open relationships; and are tied to the conscious and careful reflection of the other person. Both giving and receiving is often not about the specific present itself. Having the magical moment of “Wow! This would be perfect for _____” requires knowing another and thinking of them on a very personal level. Finding a “great gift” is a very satisfying emotional experience for the giver and the receiver. I wanted to offer some thoughts to improve gift selections and (relationships) for those you care most about during this season: • Spend thought and energy considering the specific individual interests and preferences of those you plan to gift.

• Understand underlying needs and wishes. Unfortunately, sometimes the most desired and valued things are rarely given to ourselves. • Consider the importance of sentimental gestures and actions. These can be deeply powerful. • Never underestimate the value of offering personal gifts of time or sharing experiences, talents or energy. The gift of yourself is often the most important one imaginable. The skill of great gift giving is so tied to the skills involved in having a good relationship – be thoughtful of who the person is, what touches them, and what they want or need. Adding a touch of surprise intensifies the emotion and demonstrates a deep knowledge of the other person. These actions contribute to a feeling of being known well, and appreciated. This experience is truly the most special of gifts. Dr. Bailey is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with a private practice in Marietta. Letters from Abroad by Kelly Dean Being with family for holidays is one of the things you miss most about living abroad. We rotate spending Christmas in Georgia and Spain with my in-laws, but one holiday that always gets left out is Thanksgiving. The rest of the world really needs to get with the program and adopt this great tradition. Food, family, thankfulness-what more could you want? Try as I may, Thanksgiving is just not the same away from home. Throwing together a huge meal after work (no day off, remember!) for two is a little anti-climactic. My first married Thanksgiving was a few weeks after moving to England and I felt a bit of pressure to deliver a winning dinner.

Macland Music Ministry

2016 Christmas Musical Celebration

It wasn’t my first Thanksgiving abroad. While living two years working in Spain, I’d spent one Thanksgiving in Madrid and another one in Paris with a friend. The Paris Thanksgiving was actually one of my most memorable because my friend and I somehow stumbled upon an Irish pub having an American Thanksgiving party. (An American party in an Irish pub in Paris. Let that sink in.) The American party was serving typical food and we were lucky enough to grab the last piece of pumpkin pie!

But this was different. Not only was this my first Thanksgiving being married, but it was my husband’s first Thanksgiving ever. I had a lot to live up to given the prevalence of Thanksgiving scenes in American television and movies. Even though we were living abroad and no family would be joining us, I decided to prepare our favorite dishes regardless. My mom mailed us a box of crucial Thanksgiving items: a carved wooden pilgrim statue, a turkey Beanie Baby, an apron, a US engraved glass serving platter (complete with bald eagle), and Georgia napkins. Armed with my recipes, I headed to the grocery store to find the necessary Thanksgiving ingredients.

www.maclandbaptist.org

At the grocery store, several items were quite difficult to find. Locating creamed corn for the corn casserole and the fried onions for the green bean casserole was nearly impossible. Boxed Christmas stuffing was already being sold, so I picked up some of that to add to the meal. The only Thanksgiving staples I was unsuccessful in finding were cranberry sauce, pumpkin/pecan pie, and… a turkey. To confess, there were a few Christmas turkeys, but the idea of preparing a massive turkey for two people just was too much for me. I thought about buying smaller cuts of turkey, but decided to buy a whole chicken instead. Yes, I prepared a Thanksgiving chicken. Does that make me a bad American? With my Thanksgiving chicken in the oven, I encountered another setback. We didn’t own many cooking pans the right size for making casseroles. I had to make the corn casserole in muffin trays. The top of the green bean casserole ended up a little too crispy (nice way of saying burnt), however the pineapple casserole came out right. The chicken was delicious, I might add. To not feel so lonely about our small Thanksgiving dinner, we Skyped with my parents who were together with the family at my aunt’s house. To end the night, “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” was on TV, which I thought was a little odd, but I’ll take it! All in all our first Thanksgiving was a little unconventional, but we were full for days after, so I guess it was a success!

Christmas Memories by Mark Orler I was going through some of my parent’s old photos and came across a desiccated Polaroid of a handsome young man standing amidst a pile of wrapping paper beside a Christmas tree in a red and black cowboy outfit pointing a silver cap-gun directly at the camera with a crooked grin across his face that said, “Go ahead, make my day.” Immediately I remembered that as one of my favorite Christmases as a young boy. I know this because as soon as I saw the photo I could describe in detail the iridescent-red cowboy shirt with white button snaps along the front and shoulder tassels that accompanied the jet-black pants with their shiny “pleather” fringes that ran up along the sides. Added to that was a black felt hat that had a braided chin strap for those windy days on the plains and a wide, silver belt buckle that was so big it forced the wearer to never bend at the waist. I distinctly remember walking around the living room that Christmas in 1971 purposely shifting my hips and shoulders so that the fringes and tassels would sweep back and forth across my legs and chest making that distinctive “schlap” sound that only true cowboys could fully appreciate as the repetitive noise that must have accompanied their long days on the cattle drives and which surely signaled doom to their adversaries as they whipped around to empty the contents of their six-shooters into the evil-doers of the wild and wooly West, “Swish, Schlap, BOOM!” Judging by the position I had taken in the photo, I must have just completed a signature “left-handed quick draw” from my holster as the gun was pointed stone-still in the frame while the tassels and fringes were a blur across my chest and legs in the photo not even having had the chance to make their final “schlap” before I had pulled the trigger. As I sat there buried deep in the memory of that cold December in 1971, when a 5-year-old boy could dress like a groupie for the Village People, and yet have no self-consciousness whatsoever about the flamboyant outfit his was “swishing” around the house in, I asked my mother a question.

Healthy Beautiful Legs Non-Surgical Leg Vein Treatment

“You know, for the life of me I can’t remember where I had seen that outfit and why I had asked for it for Christmas?” I asked. “You didn’t,” She replied, “You had asked for a new bike but we couldn’t afford one and J. C. Penney had a clearance on those outfits because of some ‘dye’ or ‘choking’ issue.” That’s when it hit me, I wasn’t remembering my ‘favorite’ Christmas and I wasn’t ‘posing’ in the photo. I was stomping around in that “sissy” outfit all morning long shooting anything that moved because I was so ticked I hadn’t gotten what I wanted.

Measure your space Be sure you know what size (height and width) you need before heading to the retail lot. Measure the ceiling height in the room where the tree will be displayed. The trees in the field look small when the sky is the ceiling. Don’t overbuy. Measure the width of the area of the room where the tree will be displayed. Most trees on tree farms are trimmed to an 80% taper. So a tree that’s 10’ tall will be 8’ wide at the bottom. A tree that will fit in the room vertically may be entirely too big horizontally.

Safety first Go to a retail lot that is well lit and displays their trees in a shaded area.

Ask questions about the trees at the lot Ask the retailer when he/she gets the trees: Are they delivered once at the beginning of the season, or several shipments during the season? Often, a tree obtained soon after its arrival on the retail lot will be very fresh because it was cut recently. Also ask the retailer which tree type performs best in your climate. Some species last longer and remain fresh longer than others in different climates.

Do a branch/needle test for freshness Run a branch through your enclosed hand-the needles should not come off easily. Bend the outer branches-they should be pliable. If they are brittle and snap easily, the tree is too dry.

Look for other indicators of dryness or deterioration Indicators might include: excessive needle loss, discolored foliage, musty odor, needle pliability, and wrinkled bark. A good rule-of-thumb is, when in doubt about the freshness of a tree, select Another one. If none of the trees on the lot look fresh, go to another lot.

Winter Itch by Dr. John Kayal

STATE-OF-THE-ART CARE. CONVENIENT LOCATIONS.

Does your skin get dry during the winter? Do you find yourself always scratching? You might have a problem with “winter itch”. Asteatotic eczema, also known as winter itch, is a problem with severely dry, chapped skin. Asteatotic eczema is usually chronic and is made worse in winter time due to low humidity. For most people this problem comes every year around the same time. If this is a problem you face every winter, we can put a stop to your itching! Winter itch affects women and men alike. The most common area affected is the lower legs. Initially, affected skin looks and feels extremely dry. Itching is the most common symptom; however, if untreated, a burning and stinging sensation can occur. In more extreme cases fissuring and crusting can occur. It is important to see your dermatologist before this becomes worse to prevent a secondary staph infection in cracked, open skin.

Therapy depends on the stage of the condition. Mild cases of asteatotic eczema can be treated with barrier repair creams. These newer lotions include Ceracade™, Ceramax™, EpiCeram®, and Hylatopic Plus®. These products are not found over the counter and require a prescription. Barrier repair creams work by restoring essential lipids to the skin like ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids. A topical steroid may be used if the symptoms or cracking does not resolve. Topical steroids treat asteatotic eczema due to their anti-inflammatory properties that soothe irritated skin.

December brings cookie exchanges, family get- togethers, and friends gathering to share the warmth of the holiday spirit. We think that there is nothing better to enjoy without guilt :) than a delicious sugar cookie topped with an even sweeter frosting. The macaroons are decadent when paired with chocolate and fruit. Merry Christmas and Bon Appetit!

The Best Rolled Sugar Cookies Ingredients 1 ½ Cups butter, softened 2 cups white sugar 4 eggs 1-teaspoon vanilla extract 5 cups all-purpose flour 2- teaspoons baking powder 1-teaspoon salt In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder and salt. Cover and chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight). Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Roll out dough on floured surface ¼ to ½ inch thick. Cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven. Cool completely.

Best Tasting Sugar Cookie Icing

makes about 24 ounces (enough for 48 cookies) 6 cups powdered sugar ¼-½ cup whole milk ¼ cup light corn syrup 2- teaspoons almond extract gel food coloring (in desired colors) In the bowl of a standard mixer or an electric mixer combine sugar and ¼ cup milk. Mix until smooth. Add milk as needed to create a smooth mixture, one tablespoon at a time. Add corn syrup and almond extract. To decorate cookies, your outline icing should be the consistency of toothpaste; your flood icing should be the consistency of corn syrup. Add food coloring one drop at a time until desired color is reached. Pour into bottles, decorator bags or a cup. Keep unused icing sealed until ready to use.

For a great tablescape, take a silver serving tray and tuck Christmas bulbs and greenery in to make a simple but elegant centerpiece. Turn holiday-theme scrapbooking papers into an inexpensive tabletop display. Cut and fold papers to create simple cone “trees” of different sizes. Secure seams with double-sided tape. For a dazzling effect, hang single-color ornaments tied with ribbon from a window near your table. Improvise a tiered cakes stand by placing an urn or vase upside down on a large plate and setting a smaller plate on the top. Tie wide ribbons around solid-color pillows as if they’re presents going under the tree. Place on chairs, sofas or beds for an instant spot of holiday color. Beautify a birdbath by adding fresh greenery, a large red ball, red-painted pinecones and a bright bow to bring a festive look to the winter scenery. Place paper whites in a large compote or bowl. Cover the potting soil with mini ball ornaments in colors that coordinate with your holiday scheme. Celebrate the season’s simple joys by creating a free-flowing look on your mantle with natural materials: green apples, pinecones and long-needle evergreen branches. Turn surplus ornaments into an easy holiday display. Choose coordinating colors of ornaments in urns, vases, goblets and bowls of different sizes. Finish with bright green pine branches for a woodsy touch.

TOP 5 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A DOG by Amber Burckhalter

As the holidays approach, many families begin thinking about getting a new pup or dog to share their lives with. On average, a dog will live 10 to 15 years. That’s a big commitment. Every family has their own needs, schedule, personality, space and time limitations, etc… Unfortunately, many families often choose pups based on appearance and not on those characteristics that will make the dog a good fit for their specific family.

What activities do you want to do with your dog? Pick a breed that suits those activities and understand that genetics cannot be changed. Like to train? Pick a breed that needs and desires lots of work. If you want to go to the lake, pick dogs who love to swim. Like to run? Pick dogs that are high energy. Want to go to dog parks? Pick a breed that is historically social. Check out local rescues and do not buy from the Internet or a pet store. Internet breeders may be puppy mills, selling mentally unsound or physically sick puppies and dogs as well as pet stores dogs. However, many very good dogs are waiting for new homes, and local shelters often have already done some of the training for you. Groups we like include: • ADOPT A GOLDEN • ANGELS AMONG US • ATLANTA BOXER RESCUE • ATLANTA HUMANE SOCIETY • ATLANTA PET RESCUE & ADOPTION (APRA) • GEORGIA HOMELESS PETS • PETS ARE WORTH SAVING (PAWS)

We hope that the above will help you in making and your family!

Did you know that pets can transmit diseases to people? theforbest Schedule an appointment more decision information.for you You and your potential dog deserve a lifetime of happiness together and we are happy to provide the following to assist you in this goal. Do you have any children or are you planning to have children? Pick breeds known to tolerate children well – some breeds may surprise you. Boxers, Bichon Frises, Beagles, Labrador Retrievers, Newfoundlands, Pugs, Keeshonds and Collies are good choices. How active is your lifestyle? Some breeds such as Border Collies, Boxers, Retrievers and all hunting breeds, require several hours of heavy exercise every day - such as daycare or long runs. Other breeds such as Bulldogs, Mastiffs, Pomeranians and Westies have lower exercise requirements. DO YOU HAVE ALLERGIES? TRY THESE BREEDS: • Bichon Frise, a toy breed. Virtually hypoallergenic, this breed sports a double coat of loose curls with a fine, silky undercoat, and needs skillful grooming. • Belgian (or Brussels) Griffon. Comes in two types: rough-coated and smooth. Dogs of this breed with a rough, wiry and dense coat are non-shedding, however the smooth-coated variety does shed. • Cairn Terrier. Shaggy outer coat with a soft undercoat. Its natural “bed-head” coat does need careful maintenance, but hardly sheds at all. • Portuguese Water Dogs. This strong, muscular breed, once valued as “work dogs” that herded & caught fish, and carried messages between ships, has a single-layered, non-shedding coat. • Shih Tzus (correctly pronounced “sure-ds,” not “sheetsue”), meaning “lion” dog. This breed needs daily grooming with a bristle brush, but sheds little hair.

• Irish Water Spaniels. This breed has long, curly hair and a thick undercoat (to keep them warm in cold water), needs expert grooming, but still sheds little to no hair.

GIVE YOUR HOME A FRESH NEW LOOK!

With over 20 years experience our trusted professionals provide the highest quality service in the metro Atlanta area.

FIVE WAYS TO PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR THE WINTER MONTHS 1. CLEAN OUT THE GUTTERS All the leaves and grime that you neglected while you were out hiking, or riding your bicycle have built up in your gutters. If left full of debris, clogged gutters and drains can form ice dams that prevent your drainage systems from working properly. This can lead to water seeping into your home, which can lead to all sorts of issues and extra energy costs. Save yourself the hassle of repairing a leak by simply cleaning your gutters and drains now. When you do, run water through the gutters to check for misalignments that could also cause water damage.

This is discussed quite a bit, but it is hugely important for your energy savings to ensure there are no air leaks in your home. Warm air will escape out of any cracks and can make your heating system work harder and cost you more to heat your home. Use caulk to seal cracks and openings between stationary house components like a doorframe and weather stripping to seal components that move like an operable window.

3. SHOW SOME TLC TO YOUR FURNACE Your furnace may be a distant memory since you last powered it on, but before the cold weather descends and you must reluctantly switch it on, give it some TLC. Clean your furnace annually. Sediment build-up can cause your system to work less efficiently or potentially become a fire-hazard. Cleaning your system and getting it inspected will reduce the risks. During the winter try to change your filter regularly; a dirty filter will decrease airflow and energy-efficiency. And if your furnace is ready to be replaced, buy an energy-efficient model. It will save you money and energy each month!

4. GET YOUR DUCTS IN A ROW Your ducts are often times out of sight, out of mind, tucked away in the attic or basement, but a home with central heating can lose about 20% of the air that moves through the duct system. Make sure your ducts are in order by properly sealing and insulating them. Tightly sealed and insulated ducts can potentially reduce your annual energy bills by $120 or more!

5. LIGHT THE WAY The fall and winter months mean less daylight. I know we are all keen on saving energy, but we don’t want any falls while you carry in your groceries. Luckily, you can still use your outdoor lights without wasting money and energy. Because outdoor lights are typically left on for long periods of time, buying ENERGY SAVER products and bulbs to light your outdoor pathways or porches can save a lot of energy. ENERGY STAR even makes CFL and LED flood lights that can withstand snow and rain. As an extra energy-saving effort, look for ENERGY STAR products that come with automatic daylight shut-off and motion sensors. And be sure to decorate with LED holiday lights to reduce the cost of decorating your home for the winter holidays. Colder weather is on its way, and using these tips will help you stay warm and cozy, while saving energy and money in your home.

Moving During the Winter - Save Some Cool Cash

Summer is the most popular time to move for a number of reasons. Because winter is a slower time for people moving, it is also a slower time for movers, repair people, service professionals, basically everyone in the real estate industry. According to some local moving companies, a winter move can save on a moving bill as much as twenty percent. Additionally, they say they are much more flexible for scheduling a move in the winter. This is especially important in Georgia where closing dates are often changed due to one reason or another. Some other tips from local movers related to a winter move are to 1. Make sure utilities are on in both homes, 2. Don’t pack up all your winter clothes, 3. Double wrap any fragile items since items like to break a bit easier when cold, 4. Have old towels near entries at both homes in case there is rain or snow. Finally, Buyer demand is lower in the winter months, which can allow for greater choice and less competition when looking for your new home. As always, the attorneys at Ganek Wright Minsk are available to answer your questions on this and other legal matters related to real property 678-247-1157 • MARIETTA OFFICE 678-265-8078 KENNESAW OFFICE

Tech Dad Technology is great for many reasons, and the monthly Tech Dad article wouldn’t be much use if I didn’t embrace it and find useful apps and tools to make my life easier and share with you. But sometimes... sometimes a tech solution isn’t always the best answer. Over the years, I’ve tried numerous TO DO apps on my phone and tablet to try and get a handle on my work and home life. I’ve had a bit more success with a digital calendar (specifically, Google Calendar), but a calendar isn’t really helpful when I’ve got a couple dozen tasks to do on a particular day. You know what my fallback solution has been for some time now? A simple #10 envelope. Each morning, I write down all the things I need to get done that day on the back of that envelope and I cross them out as I finish them. It’s low tech. Very low tech. But it works for me, and I have friends who also use a paper solution for their To Do lists. One problem I’ve had with the envelope, however, is that some days I don’t finish everything on that list; the next morning I add new items to the same envelope but when the envelope gets too full, I have to transfer unfinished items to a new envelope so I have more room. Another problem is I’ve lost many an envelope or had them accidentally tossed because they look like scrap paper. Yet another issue is that it’s not the most professional looking way to stay organized. But again... the To Do Envelope (TDE) works, and I’ve yet to find a better solution. Until now. Some of you may already have heard of the Bullet Journal; if so, I’m envious because I wish I’d known about it earlier this year when it started getting buzz. But that’s okay. I’m now a full-fledged user and proponent of the Bullet Journal, and I can tell you that it’s like the envelope solution but upgraded. I think of it as TDE 2.0. How does the Bullet Journal work? First, you really need to watch the video at bulletjournal.com. It’s not even 10 minutes long. But if you don’t have 10 minutes right now, let me summarize the general idea: you buy a durable journal and follow a simple system of organizing it to keep track of your To Do items, important events, and notes. There’s a simple notation system to indicate when a task is done, when a task should be “migrated” to an upcoming day in the same month or added to a Future Log where special To Do and Event items can be kept and not lost.

Air or Heat Problems? Air Heat Air oror Heat

by James Floyd Kelly

There’s a little more to it, but in a nutshell... it’s like carrying around a bundle of envelopes but with a system for organizing, moving, and closing out tasks and events. Honestly, the video didn’t really convince me to give it a try - a friend did. I tried it for a few weeks and, to my surprise, I found myself using it more and more. I still have the tactile reward of X-ing out a completed task without the worry of forgetting or losing open tasks. Plus, the habit of keeping the Bullet Journal nearby at all times has helped me capture ideas and notes that would otherwise have been forgotten. Could a digital app of some sort do the same thing? Absolutely! But I work with technology constantly, and this non-digital solution is a change of pace that my brain sorely needs. The Bullet Journal isn’t for everyone, I’m sure. For some, it will likely be missing some specific need or feature. For others, it’s just another item to carry around in addition to phone, keys, etc. But I’m sold. The creator of the Bullet Journal concept, Ryder Carroll, has provided a number of resources to help users get trained on using the tool. You can find these recordings at http://bulletjournal.com/about/ along with articles from news sources that contain stories of other users and their Bullet Journals. Finally, check out this BuzzFeed article with 23 ideas for increasing the usefulness of your Bullet Joural - http://bzfd.it/25A1W6J James Floyd Kelly is a technology writer from Smyrna, Georgia who also teaches a variety of technology summer camps for kids. He and his wife have two young boys. James’ latest two books are Digital Engineering with Minecraft and The Ultimate iPad, published by Pearson. Our Town

Lights of LIFE was introduced by Life University in 1989 as a gift to the local community. Talk of the Lights of LIFE spread quickly, given the location, quality and low cost. As the most affordable holiday light show in the Southeast, the Lights of LIFE holiday light display has become a yearly tradition. Now nearly half a million spectators from the surrounding region cruise through the spectacularly illuminated campus annually! New displays are added, and the entire arrangement is unique each year. The 65 foot tall rendition of Santa and his sleigh is the tallest display in the Southeast.
