about the cover

Lucy and David have been married since 2006 and wanted to add to the family as soon as possible. That little miracle happened when they were able to adopt Leonardo after his birth in June 2012. Lucy exclaims, “We wanted a baby for so long and were elated when a mother showed so much love in allowing us to adopt this little bundle of joy! He is a wonderful blessing.” The family loves to travel and take regular excursions. This year David and Dominick have a big trip planned to Cooperstown in June for a national baseball tournament. And annually the family escapes to the beach with Lucy’s sisters and their families. They are all eager and excited to have their new addition, Leonardo, on this year’s beach trip.

The Benefits of Vitamin D by Mary B. Hammock, MSN, CPNP Our life-long health and health habits are pre-programmed in early childhood. Study after study touts the incredible benefits of vitamin D, as well as one in ten children in the U.S. have less than optimal vitamin D levels. Symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are often unnoticed until severe but once detected are easily corrected. Vitamin D is produced by the body during exposure to sunlight. It is also found naturally in a few foods, including fish, fish liver oils and egg yolks and in fortified dairy, juice and grain products. Vitamin D helps the body absorb and use calcium in the diet. Therefore, it is extremely important for bone and teeth health, staving off skeletal deformities, fractures and even premature osteoporosis. Extremely low levels of calcium can lead to seizures and heart arrhythmias. Low calcium levels can cause low muscle tone and muscle spasms. Low levels of vitamin D are associated with severe asthma in children, mood swings, depression and fatigue, sleep issues including sleep apnea and insomnia, and have been proven to affect brain health, including memory loss. Low levels of vitamin D play a role in weight gain. Vitamin D deficiency, in addition to sedentary lifestyle and obesity, plays a major role in triggering type 2 diabetes. All organ systems are negatively impacted by low levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency is on the rise due to several factors. First, changes in lifestyle, including technology addiction and the subsequent lack of sun exposure, play a major role. Darker skin makes less vitamin D from the sun than lighter, fair skin. Applying sunscreen before leaving the house inhibits vitamin D formation in the skin. Obesity increases the risk because vitamin D is extracted from the blood fat cells, altering its release into circulation. Breastfeeding, while it is best, increases risk because breast milk contains minimal vitamin D. Certain medical conditions that interfere with food absorption, such as cystic fibrosis and inflammatory bowel disease, put one at a much higher risk for vitamin D deficiency.

Healthy Steps Pediatrics Featuring a “Quick Care Walk-In Clinic” Monday - Friday 8:00 - 10:00am

Testing for vitamin D is a simple blood test. Correcting a vitamin D deficiency is easy. Increase the amount of foods rich in vitamin D in the diet. Fish should be consumed 2-3 times a week but be careful to avoid the mercury rich large fish. Drinking vitamin D-fortified milk and eating dairy products on a daily basis is a healthy and delicious way to meet the need. Typically 15-20 minutes a day, three days a week, is adequate sun exposure to supply the body with enough vitamin D. Do not apply sunscreen before leaving the house and try for early morning sun exposure. Avoid sun exposure between 10am and 3 pm during the hot summer months to avoid burning. Sitting behind glass does not allow the body to make vitamin D, so be sure to enjoy the outdoors. In addition to all these measures, taking a vitamin D supplement for deficiency can quickly restore levels. For children under one year of age, the recommendation is 400 IU and for those over 1 year, is 600 IU a day. There is much more to learn about the benefits of vitamin D, but there are already plenty of reasons to have your child screened, if considered high-risk. North Cobb: “Attention Sciatica And Low Back Pain Sufferers…” Could One Hour With Our Doctors Give You the Answer To Your Disc Pain? Now, in Acworth, GA, Dr. Erin Arnold, D.C. & Dr. Amy Valente, D.C. have what may be the most important breakthrough in non-surgical back pain treatment. Before and after MRI studies have shown disc bulges shrink in size – even with the most painful cases of L4-L5 & L5-S1 herniations. If you’ve had disc problems for years, recently injured your back, or you’re suffering with sciatica, you must hear about these new studies. Scientific studies tell us that spinal discs are responsible for most of the aches and pains people suffer from. Discs act like a cushion between our backbones and allow for a space at each level so the nerves can exit the spinal column. When these discs get injured or wear out from bad posture, they begin to degenerate and cause pain. Bulging and herniations begin to form, pressing on the nerve roots. If the herniations occur at L4-L5, they can severely compromise the large sciatic nerve, causing muscle weakness, tingling, and severe pain. The most common invasive treatment for disc herniations is surgery. This costs quite a bit of money. Even with health insurance the patient is left with their own portion of the bill, in excess of $10,000-$15,000, and sometimes more. The recovery time and missed work can be anywhere from 3 to 6 months, not to mention the obvious severe risks associated with all surgery. But here’s the biggest problem… there is a high failure rate of back surgery. One medical study found that on average, 53% of L5-S1 back surgeries fail to produce relief of symptoms (International Orthop 1987.) Before You Go Under The Knife and Opt For Spinal Surgery… You should seriously consider a less invasive approach called spinal decompression. Non-surgical spinal decompression is a new technology that has been proven to reverse disc herniations. It creates a vacuum effect on the disc, which pulls the disc back into its normal position and brings in a fresh blood supply to promote healing. Do You Have A Disc Problem? If you experience any of the following in your back or neck, chances are your pain is due to a disc bulge, herniation or degeneration: • A vice-like squeezing feeling in your back • Sitting causes back or leg pain • Stabbing pain at the belt line or in your neck • Can’t turn over in bed without hurting • Numbness in your toes or fingers • Fire down your legs • Searing pain radiates into your arm • Prickling in your leg or toes

Finally, Some Good News… If you’ve been suffering with back pain or arm/leg pain caused by a disc bulge, disc herniation or squashed or compressed discs. Until recently, the only advice for many of you suffering in pain was to try what you’ve been told: • Try exercising • Try pain medications • Try pain shots • Just live with it

• Try physical therapy • Try muscle relaxers • Try dangerous back surgery

If you’re like most, none of these have worked for you or you are afraid of what could happen if you do try some of these. Exercising makes you hurt more, pain medications and muscle relaxers cover up the problem and give you side effects. Pain shots can cause more pain, don’t work or don’t last very long or FIX the problem, back surgery didn’t work, or made you worse. Or maybe you were one of the lucky ones that back surgery actually helped, but now the problem is back with a vengeance. Whatever your situation, you owe it to yourself to check into a Breakthrough Computerized Non-Surgical Treatment for back pain and sciatic or leg pain caused by a bulging, herniated or squashed disc or discs. It has helped hundreds of people who were suffering just like you. This new

treatment machine we are calling “the squashed disc machine.” How “Good” Discs become “Bad” Discs Over time the discs in your back tend to get squashed or compressed, especially if you’ve played certain sports when younger or have a job that requires lots of sitting or standing in one place for long periods of time. Car accidents, lifting things, very physical jobs just to name a few. It’s kind of like a cookie with cream filling, and the cream filling will start to ooze out from between the sides of the cookie if pressure is applied on top of the cookie (like gravity on our spines). Eventually this happens to a lot of us. Statistics show over 80% of Americans will suffer with back pain some time in their life. Spinal decompression treatments are very gentle. In fact, every once in a while I even catch a patient sleeping during treatment! How Does This Machine Work? Haven’t you ever had the thought…”Gosh, if somebody could just pull me apart…I would feel a whole lot better.” Yeah, we know you have. And it kind of makes a bit of sense. Well someone else, actually a medical manufacturer, back pain specialists, neurosurgeons and engineers have come up with just that. A machine that gently pulls you apart, stretches the disc to a certain point that causes a drop in pressure inside the disc (like a little vacuum in the middle of the cream filling) causing the cream filling to suck back in! You’ll simply lie on your stomach or back, whichever is comfortable, and then a specialized belt is gently put around your waist. We’ll set the machine to focus on your problem area – then the advanced decompression computer system will do the rest. Most patients feel better with just a few treatments, and best of all there will be no dangerous drugs, no invasive procedures, and no painful exercises. Does Decompression Really Work? Absolutely! When you come in we will provide you with studies that show why decompression is a preferred method of treatment. But what provides the best “proof ” on how well decompression works is what patients say about it: JUST LISTEN TO WHAT OUR PATIENTS HAD TO SAY: “I came into the office with neck, low back and knee pain. I had been suffering with this pain for 33 years. The pain had gotten so bad I could hardly move. When I came to the office my neck pain was a 9 on a 1-10 scale (10 being the worse) and now is a 0. My back pain was a 10/10 and is now a 1. I am so happy with the success I have had with my treatment. I now have more self approval and I am more confident.” Thanks, Dennis Duckworth “I had been suffering with back pain for years when I first started treatment. I had sharp pain that would shoot up my spine and to into my right shoulder. It hurt to walk or lift anything. I can now stand for longer periods of time, walk without much pain at all and have more mobility. I already feel 70% better and have not even finished my treatments yet. The staff here is very friendly and they care about my well being. I would recommend people in pain to just come into the office and do it.” Your friend, Marilyn Godwin “Before I started getting spinal decompression therapy I was having severe pain in my low back and numbness down my leg constantly. I had been suffering with this for 3 years. I had two nerve abrasions, multiple steroid shots in my back, pain killers, PT and water therapy and nothing worked. After the first spinal decompression treatment I could stand up straight with very little pain. I can now sleep through the night and exercise again.

Dr. Amy Valente, D.C. I am 90-100% better and I am so thankful I found this office.” Thanks, John Ratledge As you can see, spinal decompression has a high success rate with helping disc herniations, sciatica, and back pain. In just a matter of weeks you could be playing golf, enjoying your love life, or traveling again. Feel the Improvement – and Say “Yes” to Life Again With my “Decompression Evaluation” we’ll be able to find the problem and then get to work on it. Think of how you’ll feel in just a few short weeks. See and feel your life change for the better. Start your body on the way to pain-free, normal living, feel tight joints rest, relax, free up, muscles tied in knots will become more supple and strength in your muscles may increase. You’re able to live life like a normal person again, without back pain – able to play with your kids, enjoy time with friends, and finally get a good night’s rest. The Single Most Important Solution To Your Sciatica and Back Pain It’s time for you to find out if spinal decompression will be your sciatic and back pain solution. For 15 days only, we’re running a very special offer where you can find out if you are a candidate for spinal decompression. What Does This Offer Include? Everything we normally do in our new patient evaluation. Just call before May 31st, and here’s what you’ll get… • An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being where the doctor will listen…really listen…to the details of your case. • A complete neuromuscular examination. • A full set of specialized x-rays to determine if a spinal problem is contributing to your pain or symptoms. • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can start mapping out your plan to being pain free. • An extensive review of your MRI. • You’ll get to see everything first hand and find out if this amazing treatment will be your pain solution, like is has been for so many other patients. Until May 31st, you can get everything listed here for $20.The normal price for this type of evaluation including x-rays is $250, so you’re saving a considerable amount by taking us up on this offer. Here’s What To Do Now: Due to the expected demand for this treatment, we suggest calling our office at once at 678-574-5678.

5 Reasons Why CrossFit is Taking Over the Fitness World! You may have heard of a fitness phenomenon called CrossFit. With the CrossFit Games (a fitness competition) being shown on ESPN and CrossFit gyms popping up everywhere it’s been hard to miss. When you take a close look at CrossFit it’s easy to see why its participants are obsessed with it and why this style of training is continuing to explode in popularity. Below are my top 5 reasons what CrossFit is taking over the fitness world: It Works - This is really what’s most important, isn’t it? If you have ever been to a CrossFit gym then you know that most are littered with really fit people. Well, guess what? Most didn’t walk in that way. They earned it with hard work, coaching, discipline, and team work. You do not have to be fit to begin CrossFit; you just have to be ready to work hard….and it absolutely pays off. Whether you are looking to lose weight, build muscle, train for a sport, or simply just improve your overall fitness CrossFit will make it happen. Competition - First and foremost CrossFit is a sport, the sport of fitness. That’s why the annual CrossFit Games are now shown on ESPN. All of the workouts are timed and each person is trying to complete the workout in as little time as possible while staying safe. This allows people to compare their times against everyone else in the gym to see how they stack up. If you are a former athlete or someone who loves friendly competition then CrossFit is right up your alley…and is a ton of fun too! Professional Coaching - CrossFit classes are conducted in a group format and at many CrossFit gyms are lead by professional and certified coaches. The coaches are there to teach you how to do the exercises correctly and safely, to motivate you, to hold you accountable, and so much more. With CrossFit you get high level professional fitness coaching at a fraction of the cost of one-on-one personal training.

by Jason Goggans

The Community - Walk into any CrossFit gym in your area and you will find people who were formally strangers that are now friends, workout buddies, and accountability partners. No other workout program builds as strong of a community as CrossFit. When you get a gym full of like-minded, motivated people working their behinds off together and pushing each other to accomplish their goals what else would you expect? I dare you to attend any CrossFit class and NOT be motivated…it won’t happen. Anyone…Yes, Anyone Can Do It - One of the biggest misconceptions about CrossFit is that it’s only for the uber fit. CrossFit is hard work, yes, but having to be fit to begin couldn’t be further from the truth. While it is true that there are many really fit people doing CrossFit, like I said above, most did not begin that way. CrossFit is infinitely scalable and adaptable. This means that we can scale down (or up) any part of any workout to fit an individual’s fitness level. The CrossFit coaches can change the weight, time, number of reps, intensity, or whatever is necessary to ensure that someone is not overdoing it and putting themselves in harm’s way. Over time, as a person’s fitness level improves, the need to scale will decrease. There are now over 6000 CrossFit affiliates worldwide and dozens right here in the Metro Atlanta area. If CrossFit seems like a good fit for you visit an affiliate near you and give it a shot. If you are a hard worker, want to be pushed, want results, and want/need extra accountability you won’t regret it! Botox and Your Smile What’s all the hype surrounding Botox? Why is your Dentist becoming involved with Botox, and other neuromodulators? The uses in dentistry are limitless and have enabled a better, more lasting result to your smile makeover or treatment of any facial pain or dysfunction, while giving you the added benefit of a little wrinkle care. Your smile extends beyond your teeth. In order for you to smile with health and confidence, it is vital to establish a harmonic balance in your muscles, teeth and the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ, your jaw joint). In many cases, our muscles are overworking and one solution is to intervene with the nerve action by using a neuromodulator such as Botox. Botox has been used medically for more than 30 years to treat nerve disorders, muscular spasms and even migraines, not just for cosmetic advantages. Your dentist is best trained to achieve this desired balance and correct the facial pain associated. In addition, she can help prevent potential destruction to your teeth and joints. Your smile will be enhanced by reducing the strain and maximizing your comfort and symmetry. Have you been told you clench or grind your teeth? Do you often times awake with headaches or experience frequent headaches throughout the week? How about your smile, is it “gummy” or asymmetrical? Do you have fine lines and wrinkles around your lips? All great questions to ask yourself and each have an easy solution. Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are all available types of neuromodulators. Essentially, they are purified forms of botulinum toxin A that

interfere with nerve action reducing the muscle contraction and softening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is most effective on “dynamic” wrinkles that appear while you’re moving your face, versus “static” ones that are present even at rest. The results may vary, and it is important to communicate your desires to your trusted clinician. Unlike you may have believed, you do not have to have an expressionless face. It is possible to have some movement and achieve an enhanced appearance that is more rested and youthful without the “plastic” feel. That is the great thing about working with your dentist who understands all the facial muscles and the harmonic symmetry desired. Prevention is key! Dr. Neely Thornton excels at conservative, cosmetic options for your smile. She has incorporated the use of neuromodulators and dermal fillers to help her achieve the most healthy, confident smile for you! Please call for your complimentary consultation with Dr. Thornton and her team. We would love to help answer any of your questions and to see your rested smile shine with health and confidence, again. MOMMY FASHION THROUGH THE AGES While being a mom is hands down the most important job a woman can have, it doesn’t exactly come with a style guideline. Sometimes a mom’s style gets neglected resulting in a certain lack of luster, verve or respect that other professions have. It’s just so easy to wake up five or 10 years down the road and realize you’ve been neglecting yourself for far too long. Is it time to kick up your mom fashion and go beyond the look you’re in? Can mom wardrobes be both functional and fashionable? Yes! Here’s a guide to Mom Fashion at any age and stage. Moms with babies and toddlers Your clothes need to be safeguarded from normal baby wear and tear. Don’t buy anything without reviewing the care instructions first. Replace your dry-clean-only silk blouses with washable cotton, knits, or sweaters that will tolerate the normal or delicate cycle in your washer. Patterns or prints camouflage baby spills easier than solid colors. To liven up grab-and-go outfits, accessorize with crinkle scarves, inexpensive costume jewelry or necklaces that are safe for babies to chew on. Always pack a backup shirt in the baby’s diaper bag. You might need it by noon! 5 GREAT PIECES

You might find yourself with an hour to spare between gymnastics class and soccer practice. You can have a nice lunch with a girlfriend when you rely on your emergency clothing kit stored in the back of your car. That kit could include “grownup items” like a cute wedged sandal, a brightly colored crossbody bag to take the place of your oversized hobo bag, and some favorite bangles. Add some lipstick and enjoy your well-deserved break. 5 GREAT PIECES A thicker pant style legging that can be dressed up or down Jersey knit tee shirt dress Cute tennis shoe that’s not a running shoe A stack of bangles A Fedora Moms with high schoolers While your eyes are still on your kids, you control more of your time and your look. Be the mom your high school aged kids will be proud of. The kids are older now. If you’re in a fashion slump, pull yourself out. Take a fresh look at your style. Your hair and makeup need an update. Lip-gloss and ponytails aren’t going to cut it anymore. You have more fashion choices now so be strategic. Adorn yourself in flattering silhouettes and colors and don’t forget the accessories. Think about creating pairings of necklaces and earrings or bracelets and belts that make every outfit look sharp. 5 GREAT PIECES Cropped leather jacket Sheer patterned blouse with solid-colored camisole Color-blocked handbag Well-fitting dark denim jean A long cardigan that can be belted

Moms with college bound young adults The kids are off to their next adventure and it’s time to start your own. Your kids have changed; you’ve probably changed too, but has your wardrobe changed? This is a time for transformation. New colors, fabrics, accessories and styles of clothing can help define the new you. You’ve also gotten older so clothes may fit you differently. It’s best to reassess and hone in on new flattering shapes. Focus on your best assets and be sure to bring attention to them with well-chosen pieces. It might be time to splurge on some pieces you’ll get a lot of wear out of. A smart handbag, quality shoes, a well-tailored blazer may be perfect for you now.

Spring Sports: Prevention and Treatment of Elbow Injuries by Matthew Jaffe, MD As you gear up for enjoying spring sports, such as tennis and golf, it’s important to be aware of some of the most common elbow injuries and how to prevent them and treat them, if they do occur. “Tennis Elbow,” also known as lateral epicondylitis, is a very common condition caused by overuse of arm and forearm muscles that result in elbow pain. It develops when either an abrupt or subtle injury of the muscle, and tendon around the outside of the elbow, occurs. Tennis elbow specifically involves the area where the muscles and tendons of the forearm attach to the outside bony area (called the lateral epicondyle) of the elbow. It most commonly strikes people in their dominant arm, though it can also occur in the non-dominant or both arms. You don’t have to be a tennis player to be affected by tennis elbow. In fact, anyone who participates in activities that require repetitive arm, elbow, and wrist movement, such as baseball players, bowlers, gardeners or assembly line workers, may be at risk for tennis elbow. Common symptoms are experiencing pain slowly increasing around the outside of the elbow, with pain worsening when shaking hands or squeezing objects. Another common elbow injury is medial epicondylitis, also referred to as “Golfer’s Elbow” or sometimes even “Pitcher’s Elbow.” Although it’s less common, this condition is similar to tennis elbow in that it’s an overuse syndrome. However, the affected muscles and tendons are on the in-

PAGE 19

side of the elbow, rather than the outside. Repetitive flexing, gripping or swinging is what causes the tiny tears in the tendons, which contribute to this form of elbow tendonitis. There are several ways you can decrease your risk of tennis or golf elbow. Though it may sound simple, it is vital that you engage in simple stretches to warm up your muscles before playing a game of tennis or a round of golf. It also helps to strengthen the forearm muscles by doing exercises such as squeezing a tennis ball for five minutes at a time or doing wrist curls with a light dumbbell. If you’re diagnosed with tennis elbow or golf elbow, your doctor will likely advise that you take a break from your sport, or whatever the activity may be that’s causing the overuse of your elbow. Ice, physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medications may also be recommended. In some cases cortisone injections are required, and in severe cases, surgery, though that is rare. While tennis elbow and golf elbow are some of the more common diagnosis, there are a number of conditions that can contribute to elbow pain. Therefore, if you’re suffering from elbow pain, it is important to have your orthopaedic surgeon examine the elbow in order to give you the proper diagnosis and prescribe appropriate treatment for you. So, best of luck as you hit the courts, or the course, and enjoy your favorite sports this spring! Dr. Jaffe is a board certified, orthopaedic surgeon with Pinnacle Orthopaedics. a Call to Homeschool by Shasta Clark I am up to my eyeballs in mothering—the messes, the carpooling, the timeouts, the kisses, the cooking, the forgiveness, the play dates, the Band-aides, the correcting, the guilt. All this leaves little time for me. Take one look at my hobbit-like toenails, my 3-inch-long roots, or my thickening waistline, and it’s clear that I don’t spend much time on myself. But sweet relief is in my sights. Next fall, two of my three children will be in school, one in second grade and one in half-day kindergarten, leaving four hours a day just for me, well, just for me and my toddler. Nonetheless, metime is so close I can almost smell the lacquer of the nail salon, and boy, does it smell good! So with one foot practically soaking in a whirlpool tub, why can’t I shake the idea of giving up my freedom in order to homeschool my children? For about two years now, I’ve been mulling over homeschooling. And after two years of research, thought and prayer, here’s what I’ve determined: I don’t want to homeschool! I want my kids to go to school so I can go to the gym and finally feel good in my jeans again. I want to meet other moms for lunch. I want to pick up the journalism career I put down more than seven years ago. I want to accomplish something more than three loads of laundry, three meals, and three bedtime stories every day. I always thought homeschooling was strange. I pictured girls with long braids and longer jean skirts. I heard all the arguments about socialization, and I mostly agreed with them. Then, a few years ago, my husband became close friends and business partners with a man who had been homeschooled as a kid. I was amazed; he was so “normal”. Come to think of it, he was better than normal. Normal was what I was. I went to normal schools, got a normal education, and led a normal life. Normal was what I strove to be as a teenager, desperately seeking acceptance from the crowd. Yet as an adult, I realize that I don’t want my sons to strive for normalcy. I want them to be

PAGE 20

abnormal, just like my husband’s friend—educated, honest to the core, faithful, good, kind, true to oneself and to God, a devoted husband and father. What a bold decision his parents made, especially several decades ago. Nowadays, homeschooling is becoming more accepted, not just among Christians, but people from all walks of life are choosing it for different reasons. Yet decades ago, when his parents chose to homeschool, it was nearly unheard of. Seeking answers for my own family, I called his mom to ask why she chose to remove her children from the well-worn and well-accepted path of public school for the often-criticized and misunderstood path of homeschooling. She told me that homeschooling wasn’t an escape from the world; it was a way to teach her children real life. That made a lot of sense to me, but going against the grain still burdened me, and burdens me to this day. I live in a town similar to yours. The schools are excellent, the teachers are outstanding, and the parents move here purposefully for the school. If I choose to homeschool, I will be the only one in my community who does. Being the only one isn’t easy. It’s lonely, and I hate lonely. If I choose to homeschool, it won’t be a popular decision, even among my friends. Already, a fellow Christian mom found out I was merely entertaining the idea, and she gave me a half-hour monologue about why I shouldn’t. She let her feelings be known right in front of five other moms at a dinner party. It’s hard to stand up to that. But parenting takes courage. We parents, and especially we Christians, are often called to make decisions that are scary to us and strange to others. Shasta Clark, a former writer for CNN Headline News is a freelance journalist who writes about her most challenging job yet, motherhood. You may contact her at clarkshasta@hotmail.com.

Dyscalculia: Understanding why no one is “just bad at math” by Kristen Thompson Now that we know the brain is plastic, that is, capable of change at any age, no one can use the excuse that they’re “just bad at math.” That also means you can’t blame your son’s algebra grade on bad genes, or your daughter’s struggles with calculus on a less-than-perfect teacher. The truth is that anyone can have dyscalculia, a fancy word for “trouble with numbers.” Math struggles have almost nothing to do with genetics, gender, age or study habits. And plenty of highly intelligent people struggle with math while excelling in other subjects. In fact, many people with dyscalculia – which affects about 5 percent of the population – have normal or accelerated language acquisition. Causes, Diagnoses & Treatment

So if your genes, gender and geometry teacher aren’t to blame, what is? Most people with dyscalculia have poor visual processing and memory skills. These weak cognitive skills may manifest as specific symptoms that are not as prevalent in same-age peers. They might include: • Reversing or transposing numbers (89 becomes 98)

PAGE 21

• Confusion over math symbols • Difficulty with mental math • Trouble telling time and direction • Problems grasping and remembering concepts • Trouble with sequencing • Longer-than-normal homework sessions While homework struggles and poor performance on standardized and classroom math tests are often the first indications of dyscalculia, the most accurate diagnosis of any learning struggles is found through cognitive skills testing. With an accurate measurement of specific brain skills – such as computation skills, working memory, processing speed, numerical fluency, sequencing and planning – a custom cognitive skills training program can be designed to strengthen those skills. If your child has fallen behind in subject matter due to a lengthy absence from school (e.g. from an illness, injury or family move), tutoring can provide a short-term fix to help them catch up on the material. But if your child has fallen behind in math due to weak cognitive skills, no amount of re-teaching the material will help. Instead, look for a program to develop the broad set of underlying cognitive skills that are required to efficiently and effectively learn mathematical concepts, solve problems, and perform mathematical calculations faster and easier. It’s not natural for anyone to be “just bad at math.” In fact, just the opposite is true. The plasticity of our brains allows us to structurally reconnect the circuits in our brain in order to functionally enhance our ability to make “natural sense” out of numbers. Give your kids the opportunity to excel in math by strengthening the underlying brain skills to make it easy, fast and – dare we say – fun!

Changes that Come With Becoming a Mother “The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.” ~Unknown author~ When you become a mother, you expect some changes – less sleep, a different body, less free time. But what may be less expected is the ways that motherhood changes you on the inside. More than any other milestone, becoming a mother simply changes everything in life. When we become mothers something very deep within us is changed forever. Over time, regardless of the age of her child, a mother’s love and bond with her “baby” remains strong and unique. Cherie Carter-Scott, Ph.D., author of The Gift of Motherhood: 10 Truths for Every Mother, states: “How could I describe the indescribable? How could I put into words what it is like to be the shepherd, the guardian, and the caretaker of a tiny, helpless human being… and to gradually wean and empower him or her to be able to live a healthy, happy, and successful life? The intense connection between a mother and her children brings with it a new level of responsibility. You are the one who watches over them, and guides them. You are the person who nurtures their spiritual core and their well-being. You are responsible not only for seeing that they are wearing warm enough clothes and that that they drink their milk. In the beginning, even their basic survival is your responsibility.”

Leisa Bailey with daughter, Ali

PAGE 25

Daniel N. Stern, M.D., wrote The Birth of a Mother in 1998 and was met with criticism and praise. This book was controversial as it challenged that the “Hallmark” image of the glow and joy of motherhood also came with more negative and difficult adaptations. Dr. Stern stated the purpose of his book was “to take the edge off the loneliness

by Leisa A. Bailey, Ph.D.

and isolation so many mothers experience when they face the dramatic change in their inner landscape, and don’t know whether they are the only ones to whom it’s ever happened.” Dr. Stern asserts three stages in the development of what he terms the “motherhood mindset”. 1. “Preparing to be a Mother” The months of pregnancy and the birth is when a woman

emotionally prepares for motherhood by exploring her expectations, fears, and fantasies about her child.

2. “A Mother is Born” The months following the baby’s birth a mother has engaged in the feed-

ing, nurturing, and caring for the new baby. The first and strongest concerns are keeping the baby alive and then making the baby grow and thrive. Additional is the development of an intimate, loving relationship with your new baby. During this stage the new mother needs connection with other mothers to help her develop her own mothering identity. She seeks affirmation, support and validation from other women in the mothering role- particularly her own mother. 3. “The Mother Adapts” The phase involves the process of merging the mother identity with

other roles. A refocus on the role of being a wife is essential. The birth of a child creates momentous and unpredictable changes to the marital relationship. The couple still needs time together to keep that relationship strong. Perhaps most difficult in this phase is the challenge of finding harmony with mothering and resuming a career. The realities of returning to employment necessitate significant adjustments and are a major emotional challenge in the third phase of the birth of a mother.

Mothering is unique to each woman, and no two mothers have the same experience. While it is a whole new level of responsibility and the most challenging experience for any woman; it is also the most joyous.

Happy Mother’s Day to all! Dr. Bailey is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with a private practice in Marietta. You can learn more about her by visiting: www.marietta-psychologist.com. You may reach her at (770) 428-6698 or LeisaB@marietta-psychologist.com. Your comments or questions are welcome.

Most people are concerned first and foremost with the product’s effectiveness, the overall cost and just how long the effects will last. Before deciding which product may be best for you, a key question to ask is just what your goal is. Are you looking to simply reduce the most obvious signs of aging like fine facial lines and wrinkles? Or is there a specific area that you would like to address like the deeply set folds or furrows around the mouth often referred to as the ‘marionette lines’ because of their similarity to a puppet’s mouth? Once you have determined your goal, you can then begin to consider the products that may best meet that goal and target your most troubled areas. If your concerns are deep folds and furrows, volumizing filler such as Radiesse may be a consideration. Healthy collagen is the substance that gives your skin a smooth or youthful appearance. This same collagen begins to break down as you age resulting in decreased skin laxity and facial volume with more apparent wrinkles. Radiesse can replace volume loss through soft tissue augmentation and can even stimulate production of natural collagen. Immediate results can be seen with Radiesse and can last up to one year. (The injection can also be given with lidocaine to significantly reduce any injection related pain.) Belotero Balance Dermal Filler can also have a soft and smoothening effect on very fine wrinkles and lines. Skin can lose its youthful appearance as production of natural support structures diminish. These structures such as hyaluronic acid, known as HA begin to diminish over time. Belotero Balance replaces lost HA and works to instantly plump your skin filling out any noticeable wrinkles. Belotero Balance is injected as a gel and results can last up to six months. The cost of Radiesse and Belotero Balance vary according to the total areas injected and the volume or dosage of the injection, for instance a .8 ml versus a 1.5 ml injection. During the month of May, Kayal Dermatology is offering a $100 discount on both Radiesse and Belotero Balance. In addition, the manufacturer, Merz Pharmaceuticals is also offering a $50. gift/rebate card* as a promotional introduction. If you would like to consider either of these fillers – or additional products and procedures, simply contact me at 770-426-7177 today! *Restrictions apply. Offer valid through 5/31/13.

Everybody loves tomatoes! In fact, some people love them so much that they struggle to grow them each year, because they give their plants too much love. The calls have already started to come into the Extension office: “My tomato plant leaves are yellowing or browning, curling, spotting, wilting ... “you name it, and I see it and hear it every year, beginning right about now.” When I go down my list of questions about how the loving gardener has treated their tomato plants, I usually learn that they have watered the plants every day, given them quite a bit of fertilizer and planted them in the same sunny spot that worked so well for the tomatoes they produced last year. The usual plea is that they "love" tomatoes and they have done everything that they can think to do to help them along. Often though, their well-intentioned care has resulted in the tomato plant problems they are so desperately trying to solve. Follow some basic rules for growing healthy tomato plants that will produce a great crop of tomatoes this summer. 1. Water when plants need it, but don't over water. For the first week that they are in the ground, they might need water every day, but gardeners need to back off the water after the first week and slowly wean their plants down to 1 inch of water a week for their plants. Watering tomato plants everyday will prevent them from developing a strong root system. If tomato plant roots are sitting in wet soil everyday, it is an invitation to root rot diseases. 2. Deliver the water to the root system. Do not wet the plant leaves. Wetting the leaves opens them up to infections that can cause your plant leaves to spot, yellow and wilt before the plant has a chance to produce any of the tasty tomatoes that gardeners are so anxiously anticipating. You can use a soaker hose or drip tape water your plants at the root system. 3. Water in the early part of the day.

4. Mulch around your tomato plants to help conserve water in the soil, keep the root system cool and help reduce the chance of soil-borne diseases infecting your tomato plants. 5. Rotate your tomato crops each year. Planting them in the same place allows disease pathogens that are specific to tomatoes to build their populations in the soil. Try not to plant tomatoes in the same place more than once every three or four years. 6. Be careful with fertilizer. Young tomato plants are particularly sensitive to nitrogen and can be easily burned if over fertilized. Have you had your soil tested? Follow soil test results carefully and don't apply all of the recommended fertilizer at the time you plant tomatoes. Wait until they have established a good root system and started to grow before you fertilize to prevent fertilizer burn, which causes tomato leaves to yellow and curl and can result in the death of very young tomato plants. You can learn more about growing tomatoes in Georgia by reading the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension publication, “Georgia Homegrown Tomatoes.” Mary Carol Sheffield is the Paulding County Extension Coordinator and Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources. www.ugaextension.com/paulding.

The Real Estate Market

Some schools require you to use the school photographer for your yearbook pictures… but you are not required to buy their pictures, which are often twice as expensive as they should be.

by Deborah Ratchford

A SNAPSHOT OF THE REAL ESTATE MARKET Inventory is the discussion point in the housing market right now. The shortage of homes for sale in advance of the busy home shopping season that comes with the warmer weather and kids getting out of school is a hot topic. The overall number of homes listed for sale is down almost 20% from last year. Understanding when the inventory shortage will fully lift requires an understanding of what’s causing the squeeze in the first place. So, I thought I would provide a bit of background. Negative Equity By far the largest single factor contributing to the shortage of homes on the market is the overall number of homeowners with negative equity, or homes that are “underwater” which means that the homeowner owes more on their mortgage than their home is worth. Believe it or not, this is about 25% of homeowners. As a result, many potential sellers are stuck where they are, and many potential listings instead sit unlisted, contributing to tight inventory. These homeowners can’t list their home for sale because their outstanding loan balance is more than the home would likely sell for. Therefore, the seller would have to bring cash to the closing table to satisfy their obligations to their lender and in most cases, this just doesn’t make sense. The GOOD NEWS - Home values rose over 6% year-over-year and are expected to rise another 3%+ through the rest of the year. These rising values will help free many homeowners trapped by negative equity. Holding Out While buyers always want to buy as close to the bottom as possible, and sellers want to sell as close to the top – the objective of both, of course, is to walk away with the most money in their pocket – that’s almost impossible if you are selling and buying. Currently, the market is much closer to the bottom than it is to the top with national home values hovering at 18.5 percent less than their 2007 peak. So, many would-be listings are not on the market because homeowners are convinced their home is worth more than it might currently sell for or some sellers are emotional and can get stuck on a figure they think they must achieve before selling. The important thing is to consider all aspects in the selling or buying of a home. The GOOD NEWS - your real estate professional is an expert that can help you prioritize your goals and help you consider various scenarios and perspectives that you might not have considered including rising prices, your location, timing, interest rates and more! A Bird in the Hand Before sellers commit to listing their home, they first must be convinced they can buy a home better suited to their needs after their current home sells. Due to the inventory shortage, many sellers fear they may not find their next home if they list their current home. Homeowners become convinced that inventory shortages will mean they won’t be able to find another home if they decide to sell, so they keep their home off the market, which contributes to still more inventory shortages. Constructing a Solution The last major factor that will contribute to more for-sale listings are new homes currently under construction and in the construction pipeline. The GOOD NEWS - Housing starts are up 20% and permits issued for new housing rose 35%. The housing crash put many planned residential construction projects on hold over the last 5 years. But as demand began to return, so did developers and their previous projects. New construction will help ease inventory constraints and moderate sometimes over appreciation in many areas.

What Should You Do? The current inventory shortage is a product of new household formation, near-historic housing affordability and low interest rates. The GOOD NEWS is that these fundamentals should remain in place in the market for the foreseeable future. And, yes, supply will struggle to keep pace with demand but only in the short term. As a result, many buyers in the upcoming spring home shopping season may get pulled into bidding wars over what inventory is available, which can be frustrating. The best advice is to remember the value of patience, to understand that more supply will be coming and to not commit to paying beyond your comfort level in the heat of negotiations. Your real estate professional can help you create your picture perfect scenario.

Some Interesting Facts Concerning Canine Obesity Did you know…..approximately 50% of U.S. dogs are overweight or obese.

• Medicine • General Surgery • Vaccinations • Dentistry • Orthopedic Surgery

• Laser • Ultrasound • Dermatology • Behavioral Counseling • Boarding • Grooming

Do you have a dog that is on the heavier side of pudgy? If picking him up challenges your strength or your dog cleans the floors with his stomach—you and your dog definitely have a problem! All joking aside, health risks of obesity are real. Obesity contributes to many medical conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, heart and lung disease, high blood pressure, compromised immune function and can even predispose to certain types of cancer. It has been well documented that dogs maintaining an ideal body weight live 15% longer, and with less disease, than overweight dogs. It is a fact that dogs will live shorter lives if obesity is an issue.

Suzanne Newsom, D.V.M. and Cardi

While most dog owners realize that their dog may be “a little heavy”, they often don’t recognize when their dog is truly obese. When a vet says “Fido” should lose 5 pounds, it often goes in one ear and right out the other. Really…who doesn’t have 5 pounds to lose? But this is us thinking in human weight terms. Did you know…. 5 extra pounds on a (should-be) 12 pound Shih Tzu is like 58 extra pounds on a 140 pound woman. 5 extra pounds on a (should-be) 25 pound Beagle is like 28 extra pounds on a 140 pound woman. 5 extra pounds on a (should-be) 70 pound Lab Retriever is like 10 extra pounds on a 140 pound woman.

pets of the month

While some dogs do indeed have a medical condition that predisposes them to obesity, most often it is a result of simple overfeeding. While dogs are frequently overfed their food and treats are also a major source of hidden calories. Look at this telling example: A premium pig ear on average has about 230 calories. If you give this pig ear as a treat to a 40 pound dog (who should be eating around 620 calories each day), it is the same as a person (on a 2300 calorie diet) eating 2 double cheeseburgers as a treat in addition to their normal meals. This pig ear represents close to 40% of that dog’s daily calorie requirement.

Carrigahowley, the Irish Setter, adopted Spot, the English Setter, from an English Setter rescue group. They have been best pals from Day One and love to play in the yard, go to the Puppy Park, hunt quail, swim and go anywhere in the car - together. They both also love visiting with folks whenever they can and cuddling with their people.

What can you do? The first step is to admit there is a problem. Get motivated on your dog’s behalf! Talk to your vet about getting your dog a full medical checkup. Find out just how overweight or obese your dog is. Find out what their ideal body weight is. Find out how many calories they should eat each day. Choose the best food for weight loss in your dog. Exercise your dog briskly for at least 20 minutes every day!
