Our Town

about the cover

Friendships are the precious foundations that support us through the ups and downs, the thick and thin, and the joys and sorrows during our lifetimes. Friends, old and new, hold that special place in our hearts that enrich our days and help to shape the unique memories that we carry with us. One of our favorite things to do at Our Town is to introduce our cover family and friends to our readers. This month we highlight a group of young women who have shared a special friendship for over 20 years. Lynn Christian, Claire Cyr, Melissa Khan, Carson Wernz, and Courtenay Wall grew up together in Marietta and began their friendships in elementary school. Claire, Melissa, Carson, and Courtenay met as kindergartners at West Side Elementary School in Marietta. Their friendship circle became complete when they met Lynn (who attended Hickory Hills) in the 4th grade during jazz classes. Growing up in Marietta, they enjoyed countless activities together, from Brownies, to after school activities and sports, to family trips. A fond memory for all of them was sharing the same middle school discipleship group at the First United Methodist Church on the Marietta Square. In 1998 this group of young women, graduated from Marietta High School. Carson, Courtenay, and Melissa departed for the University of Alabama, while Lynn headed to Auburn University, and Claire attended Presbyterian College.

Carson Wernz with son, Henry, Lynn Christian with son, Andrew, Courtenay Wall with daughters, Careers, marriages, children and pets have all been added over the years. What’s exMarin and Juliette, Melissa Khan with son, Porter and Claire Cyr with Tacoma and Aspen traordinary is that they found themselves back together again at “home”, making new memories with their own families. They gather together once a month for a Girls bands, and every summer we bring our families together for the concerts on the Marietta Square.” Night Out at one of their homes. Claire shared her thoughts about their special bond, “I feel extremely blessed to be a part of such an amazing group of gals. It's rare to find a group of friends Courtenay summed up the group’s feeling by saying, “When you put your heart and soul into the who remain close twenty-something years later. It's a testament to strong friendships and our tightareas of life where you are needed (work, family, and running a household) you are often left with knit community. We have "adopted" several new friends into our Girls Night Out group and we cherlittle time or energy to put into the things you hold near and dear, like friends. But having friends in ish the blend of old and new friends!” the same boat, means we all understand what it's like to be stretched. And regardless if the house wasn't spotless, the dish didn't turn out quite right, or the baby is screaming her head off in the backThere are actually 10 girls in their group and they love the comic relief of getting together to catch doesn't matter. We're just a group of friends that laugh together, count on each other and up and enjoy great food and wine. Melissa told Our Town, “We never leave our Girls Night Out can lean on each other no matter what.” without our faces hurting from all of the laughter! The majority of us are moms, and we regularly schedule play dates so our kids can grow up together and be as close as we are. Do You Have Spring Fever?

Bravo Dance Center

by Mary B. Hammock, MSN, CPNP Spring is a lovely time of flowers blooming and birds singing. It also means your car, house, shoes and even your eyelashes will likely be covered in that yellow haze. Spring brings beautiful, comfortable weather, mood-enhancing sunshine and the itch to spend time outdoors tossing the ball or riding a bike. But Spring hay fever also arrives and for some it brings allergy misery. An allergic response starts when the immune system mistakes a normally harmless substance, such as pollen or pet dander, for a dangerous invader. Your body produces antibodies to protect you from the unwanted substances. With allergies, your body makes antibodies to particular allergens and the resulting reaction can inflame skin, sinuses, airways or the digestive system. The severity of the allergies varies from person to person and can range from minor irritation to life-threatening anaphylaxis.

“Life is good. Life is big. Life beats a rhythm in every heart that beckons each of us to join the dance.” —Annie Danielson

Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, can cause congestion; runny nose; coughing due to post-nasal drip and irritation; itching in ears, nose and throat; and itchy, watery, swollen eyes. If one is prone to reactive airway disease or asthma, upper airway allergy irritation will irritate lower airways resulting in chest tightness and wheezing. Allergies and asthma account for more than 10 million lost work and school days a year and pose a very real and miserable problem. Age is a risk factor for developing allergies. Although allergies can develop at any age, children are more likely to develop allergies. If one parent has allergies, there is a 40% chance of passing it on to the child. If both parents have allergies, there is a 90% chance of passing it on to their child. It is not uncommon for allergies to go away and then return in the future. Another risk factor is having one type of allergy. It simply increases the risk of developing other allergies.

Common complications of allergies include eczema, sinusitis, ear infections or lung infections. Having an allergy makes one more prone to developing asthma. Symptom management becomes extremely important for the best health outcomes. It is helpful to identify what triggers you or your child may have. Consider keeping a symptom diary to help identify what the allergens may be in your environments. Also, primary care providers or allergists can help to identify allergens, through RAST testing or skinprick testing, which allows for specific avoidance of the allergens. Allergen avoidance is generally the most important step in preventing allergic reactions and reducing symptoms. Benadryl used to be the best treatment for hay fever, but it wears off in about 8 hours and generally causes sedation. The newer OTC second- generation antihistamines provide 24-hour coverage, are generally non-drowsy and have a great safety profile. Allergy eye drops provide immediate relief and last twelve hours when needed. For some patients, prescription nasal steroid sprays may be necessary to manage symptoms, in addition to the antihistamines. For severe allergies or allergies not completely relieved by other treatment, immunotherapy via allergy shots or newer options may be necessary. An allergist can determine if you or your child is a candidate. Healthy Steps Pediatrics is helping to grow healthy children one step at a time. If your child is suffering with allergies and you would like to know what to avoid and how to make him more comfortable, call 678-384-3480.

“Finally Free from Arthritis Pain Without Drugs and Harmful Side Effects” Living with arthritis pain can affect every part of your life. It keeps you from enjoying the good things in life – time with grandkids, playing golf, even working in the yard. It would be nice to get out of bed – just one morning – without pain. Every time you try and push through the pain…like standing or walking for a long period of time…you pay for it for the next 2-3 days with even more pain. Do you have any of the these Arthritic problems? • Osteoarthritis • Rheumatoid arthritis • Bursitis/tendonitis • Degenerative joint disease • Lumbar disc problems • Aching pain in the arms or legs Pain Pills Are Not the Answer Do you remember the Vioxx scandal? It was a medication designed to relieve arthritis pain…but like all drugs, it had side effects. After years of use worldwide, the makers withdrew it from the market because of the overwhelming evidence it caused heart attacks and strokes. There’s a time to use pain medications, BUT not before seeking a natural way to correct the CAUSE of the problem! Ask yourself … after taking all these pain medications… maybe for years…are you any better off? Pain Is Not Just ‘Old Age’ Have you had one doctor after another telling you this is just the natural process of the body getting older - that you should expect to have arthritis. Sure, if you don’t take care of your damaged joints now, as you get older

they will be worse (which is why you shouldn’t wait any longer to see if I can help you.) However, old age is not the cause of your arthritis. I’ll venture to say all 360 joints in your body are the same age, yet arthritis and joint degeneration has not affected every one of them – only your previously injured joints that never healed properly. My name is Dr. Amy Valente owner of North Cobb Spine and Nerve Institute. Over the past six years since we’ve opened the doors, I’ve seen hundreds of people come in suffering with arthritis and leave the office pain free. I’ve made it my mission in practice to help those suffering with chronic pain like you. “I only wished I had found you sooner” I hear this too often, so I decided to do something about it and run this ad. Just call before April 15th and you’ll get my “Arthritis Evaluation” for only $20. • An in-depth consultation about your arthritis where I will listen…really listen. • A complete nerve, muscle and spinal exam to find the “cause” of your problem. • A full set of specialized x-rays to look for joint degeneration (arthritis)… (NOTE: These would normally cost you at least $200). • A thorough analysis of your exam and xray findings so I can show you how to fix the problem. I’ll answer all your questions about chiropractic and arthritis pain. The appointment will not take long at all and you won’t be sitting in a waiting room all day either. To take me up on this special offer, you must call before April 15th. Call today…Phone 678-574-5678

Feel the Improvement and Say “Yes” to Life Again Listen to what someone else has to say about it… “I came into the office with terrible hip pain and stiffness. Now I am able to move around without all of the pain! Before I came to the office I had a lot of trouble sleeping but now I can sleep 7 hours a night without taking any medication!” Thanks! D. Hames “When I came in to NLCC I was dealing with pain that at times, left me unable to function normally. Activities such as working out, doing yard work and lifting my grandson were difficult. Now that I am getting well I feel like a normal person again. I can exercise, lift weights and even lift my grandson without worrying about the pain!” -Thanks again! K. Sears

“I sought out care at North Cobb Spine and Nerve for the pain and stiffness in my neck. The pain had been bothering me for about 4 months. I was unable to turn my head from side to side, which made driving difficult. Before seeking treatment I had tried multiple muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory medications. Since starting my care I have improved 100%. The pain in my neck is gone and I am now able to turn my head with no pain. What surprised me most was that I have also had fewer headaches. The staff here has treated me great and always show genuine concern about my well -being. Thank you, Diana T With my “Arthritis Evaluation”, we can find the problem and then correct it. Think of

Dr. Amy Valente, D.C. how you could feel in just a few short weeks. See and feel your life change for the better. Start your body on the way to pain-free, normal living. Feel tight joints rest, relax, free up. Feel muscles tied in knots become more supple. Feel strength in your muscles increase. As you begin to see motion returning to your joints, you’re preventing and reducing chances of disability and a crippling future. You’re playing golf again -- hitting longer drives, smoother putts, and lower scores…without pain. Arthritis can be successfully treated. Healthy, pain-free living should be yours. Please call our 24 Help Line at 678-574-5678 and tell the receptionist you’d like to come in for the Special Arthritis Evaluation before April 15th. We can get started with your consultation, exam and x-rays as soon as there’s an opening in the schedule. North Cobb Spine and Nerve Institute is located at 3451 Cobb Pkwy. Suite 4 in Acworth. (On the corner of Mars Hill Rd. and Cobb Pkwy) I look forward to helping you get rid of your pain so you can start living a healthier, more joyful life. Sincerely, Dr. Amy Valente, D.C. P.S. The only real question to ask you is this… Life’s too short to live in pain like this. Call us today and soon I’ll be giving you the green light to have fun again!

MICRO-CURRENT FACIAL SCULPTING NOW AT SANDA GANE’ EUROPEAN DAY SPA Sanda Gane’ European Day Spa is pleased to announce the arrival of their Micro-Current Facial Sculpting procedure to help ward off the side effects of aging skin. Skin changes are among the most visible signs of aging, and the evidence includes fine lines and wrinkles, along with sagging skin resulting from a loss of collagen and elastin. Consider treating yourself along with the arrival of spring to a Micro-Current Facial for that extra glow and look and feel of renewal. The Micro-Current Facial is often referred to as the “lunch-time lift”. It actually feels quite pleasant and positive changes in your skin can usually be seen immediately after the first treatment. Results are subject to a variety of factors including your lifestyle, age, health, and condition of the skin tissue. Much like regular exercise, the effects of the Micro-Current Facial are cumulative and the outcome and longevity increases after each treatment. For the best long-term results, Sandal Gane’ recommends a series of 10 to 20 treatments over 10 to 20 weeks followed by a monthly treatment thereafter. The Micro-Current Facial has been shown to be very effective in producing a number of cosmetic benefits: • re-educates muscles • increases blood and lymph circulation • enhances the penetration of the active ingredients of skin care formulations • increases the production of collagen and elastin • lifts aged and slackened skin • visible improvement of skin texture • reduces fine lines and wrinkles • visible reduction of acne scars This procedure also works well in conjunction with other treatments such as Botox, dermal fillers, and Microdermabrasion. While Botox and dermal fillers treat expression lines, the micro-current can complement the effect by sculpting and contouring the muscles of the face especially the eyebrows, upper cheek and jaw line. The use of micro-current in medicine and cosmetic improvement has been studied for more than 30 years. True micro-current uses a current with an intensity of less than one millionth of an amp (< 1mA) and because of its low intensity it does not cause a physical or visual contraction of the muscle.

Micro-current stimulation works by a process called muscle re-education. There are significant benefits when applying these external energy sources to the face. During treatment all 32 facial muscles are physically manipulated using wands (probes) or other attachments that transmit the micro-current impulses. The application of micro-current also supports skin correction by encouraging the repair process. Damaged skin requires a program of restoration that is gradual and progressive for long-term optimum health. Micro-current stimulation delivers tiny electrical impulses that mirror the body’s own natural bio electrical field. In most cases, treatment is virtually sub-sensory, with just a slight electrical tingling sensation. The Micro-Current Facial is the darling of celebrity treatments because it revitalizes your looks in double-quick time. One of Oprah’s Favorite Things, and as seen on Dr. Oz, you don’t need to be a silver screen beauty to benefit from the effects. There are no recognized side effects of micro-current treatment, but it is not recommended for parts of the skin that have very recent scar tissue. Also, if you are pregnant, epileptic or you have a pacemaker, you should avoid the micro-current treatment.

For more information on the Micro-Current Facial at Sanda Gane’ or to schedule an appointment, please call 770.514.2020.

Peaceful Outdoor Sanctuaries by Kimberly Herring As the weather warms up, we begin thinking of spending more time outside enjoying the longer daylight hours and the beautiful wonders of nature! Today’s outdoor living spaces have really evolved. The line between indoors and outdoors continues to blur as many of us want to take our indoor comforts and solitude outdoors. This concept is becoming more realistic as many manufacturers of home products develop more and more appliances, furniture, lighting and accessories that can be used indoors or out. People are driven to find peaceful sanctuaries as a prescription for their stressful lives. Outdoor patios and porches are becoming more sophisticated and refined, and are becoming a living extension of the indoor spaces. Careful pre-planning will be the key to creating the perfect outdoor space as your personal sanctuary and a place where you can relax and entertain with friends and family! I suggest you begin with making a wish list of all the elements and functions that would make this the perfect space for you and all who will be using the space. You may be amazed at how long this list might become! Creating or renovating an outdoor space has many elements. Landscape design, stonework and carpentry are all critical components of designing your outdoor haven. Outdoor furnishings, lighting and accessories are also an essential element in your overall plan. As you begin the process and consider space planning and design be sure to include the entire family. Your outdoor space should accommodate all your needs throughout the year. Do you entertain outdoors? Make sure that there will be enough seating for your larger parties. Do you spend time outdoors in the evenings and at night? Make sure that you have adequate lighting and bug control included in your plan. Is outdoor grilling seasonal for you or all year round? Where you place the grill and whether it has a protective roof will make a difference depending on how you use it. Do you plan to have your family meals outdoors often? If so make sure that your dining area comfortably accommodates your family and then some. Outdoor furniture has greatly evolved from the folding, vinyl strap versions of the past, to beautiful pieces made of teak, steel, rattan, and wicker. Many pieces look just like indoor furniture, but are constructed and designed to stand up to outdoor elements. Ensuring that you have chosen comfortable furniture should be the most important element in your design! Fabrics are being manufactured to resist fading from ultraviolet rays, to resist mildewing from damp conditions and to resist odor absorption. These types of fabrics are a must for any upholstery or drapery that will be used outdoors or in a screened-in location.

THE “BE READY FOR ANYTHING” RULES Looking and feeling great is often the result of the little things we do each day (or month) that turns into good image habits. Here’s a list of “could-dos” to enrich your routines. • Start the day with a great moisturizer with an SPF of 30 or more. • Exfoliate and moisturize face, arms, and legs regularly. • Don’t shy away from brighter lipstick shades. • Wear the highest heel height you can while still being comfortable. • Purchase a cute jacket and well-fitting pair of jeans. • Purchase something in a flattering color that you don’t usually wear. • If you’re feeling down, don’t wear black. • When in doubt, wear a slip. • Get more wear out of special occasion separates by teaming them with everyday basics. • Add another bangle to your stack. • Claim a scent, but wear it discreetly. • Make the second Saturday of each month your clothing-care day (dry cleaning, shoe repair, alterations, jewelry repair).

Lighting is also a very important aspect in creating an inviting outdoor space. Be sure you incorporate various types of lighting in your outdoor space just as you would in your indoor spaces. Landscape lighting, overhead lighting, ceiling fans or decorative side lighting are good ideas. Torches or tiki lighting can also be a charming and functional element to your lighting plan. Developing a creative lighting plan can help you create a space with increased ambiance and functionality. Remember to create a space that is perfect for you and your needs. This is a space where memories will be made so consider it an important investment. I like to call an investment like this an emotional anchor: a space where your family gathers, shares and remembers forever. mommy moments

Better than a Honeymoon by Shasta Clark My husband and I have come a long way with our anniversary celebrations. Our first was a disaster; our eleventh was a dream. We started off our marriage like a lot of starry-eyed, lost-in-love couples. On our honeymoon in Maui, we promised that we’d take romantic, tropical trips every anniversary. Year one, we were barely making rent so Maui was out. Heck, Six Flags was out. By year five, we had a newborn and a mortgage. By year 10, we had two children, our third due in two weeks, and a bigger mortgage. Sound familiar?

niversary, when my new husband didn’t do anything, no reservations or candlelight, I was distraught. By year two he understood that anniversaries are important milestones, and I understood that he couldn’t read my mind. That year, he took me on a surprise getaway to New York City. Years 3-10 were a series of dinners at respectable restaurants, where we were so worn out from the kids and work, we barely had energy to talk. So about five days into our Caribbean trip, when my husband asked me, “Do you miss the kids?” I nearly burst out laughing. Then I felt bad for nearly laughing. The politically correct answer was yes, but I wanted to scream, “No way, man!” Truth was, I did miss them, but I knew that two minutes after returning home, I’d be right back in the swing of changing diapers, helping with homework, refereeing Wii time, and fetching another cup of water for a four-year-old who’s trying to avoid bedtime. I was going to live every last second of our vacation to the fullest.

Finally 11 years later, we did it! We went to the Caribbean for seven whole days, just the two of us. It was the first time since having our first child seven years earlier that we’d ever gone away alone together. We slept in, ate meals that someone else cooked and cleaned up, spontaneously hopped a ferry to see what another island had to offer, slow danced to live music late at night, and lay quietly on the beach while the sun kissed our pasty-white skin. I think I enjoyed it more than I enjoyed our honeymoon. No, I’m sure I did. On our honeymoon, I didn’t realize the luxury of eating dinner without getting up from the table 16 times. I didn’t understand that finishing a conversation with my husband would be darn-near impossible someday. Other things were better too. On our honeymoon, I remember wanting to feel skinny in my bikini, so I skipped dessert. Now, well into my mid-thirties and three pregnancies later, I ate dessert or drank wine nearly every night. I still wanted to look good, who doesn’t? But I cared more about living. I’ve also lowered my expectations of my husband. I know that sounds insane, but on our first an-

The day before heading home, my mother-in-law sent videos of the kids to my iPhone. When I saw them, I nearly burst again, but this time with tears. I missed them finally! And I wanted more than anything to get home and hug them. The plane couldn’t fly fast enough for me. The day we returned, we lavished our love and attention on the kids. After they were tucked in that night, I looked at my husband and said, “Hi. Have we talked today?” “I don’t think so,” he said. “I guess we’ll talk again on our next romantic, tropical vacation—in 11 years,” I said. We both laughed.. Prom Time

Springtime is always described as a time of rejuvenation and a reminder of the precious gifts that life bestows upon all of us who dwell in its midst. It is also a veiled celebration of youth, when young men and women don their tuxedos and dresses to show the world what smooth skin, good physical hygiene, and what incredible genetic coding can produce. And then you see them at the restaurant before their proms and witness the opposite. I will begin by admitting that my fashion sense stems from a DNA strand gifted to me from my father that locked in to 1959 and stayed there. I can look at pictures of me from 30 years ago and recognize the outfit as something that can just as easily be hanging in my closet today.

Michael A. Rossitch, DDS, MS, PC Specialist in Pediatric Dentistry

by Mark Orler

I am certainly not that bad, but when a five-year-old tries on a dress at a mall that barely comes to her ankles and it is explained to her mother that this particular dress is a High School PROM DRESS, then we’ve got problems, right here in River City!

I know it is a right of passage to look like an idiot at your prom, I get that. I wore a tuxedo with an ascot for Pete’s sake, and looked like I had just stepped out of a scene from My Fair Lady. My date revealed nothing but a shoulder and two ankles and put little Lord Fauntleroy to shame.

“Hmmm, what to wear today? Let’s see, it’s Monday so that means Khaki pants. And it’s Spring which means short-sleeve button-down shirt”. My fashion conundrum is only ever limited to “plaid or solid” shirt?

Enjoy your prom, but just remember those pictures stick around for a long, long time.

NEVER do I have to look at an outfit that I have just wrapped around my frame and think, “Is there too much of my belly and backside showing, or just enough?”

Mark Orler is a full-time husband, father and part-time observationist. Mark can be reached at

Since this question appears to confound many “yutes” today, I will give them an answer, “not as much as you apparently think.” My wife and I have instilled upon our young children that modesty in dress is not about being prudish, but it’s about recognizing the amazing gift that God has given you. If we treat our bodies as temples, as our Creator suggests, then we certainly wouldn’t leave that temple half-exposed to the elements or cram it into a sack so tight that it tests the tensile strength of both thread and fabric. People confuse the whole “temple/body” thing to mean that we should worship our physical selves, and then they reject the notion because it sounds too “conceited.” That’s just wrong. The Temple was the building that surrounded the veils that surrounded the presence of God. The building was not something to be worshiped, it was just to be treated with respect because God abided in its midst. That’s what our bodies are, merely the housing that surrounds God’s image, if you believe such crazy things or have a smidgen of self-respect.

april crossword solution

These are not new battle lines, I know full-well that parents had these conversations with their girls many years ago when their precious angels appeared before them showing an ankle or a wrist from beneath their prom dresses.

Turning Tragedy into (Fitness) Triumph

by Jason Goggans

At Warrior Pride Fitness we are blessed to witness countless success stories from simple fat loss to life changing transformations. Every now and again, however, a client’s success story really jumps out at you and touches you in a different way. That’s exactly what happened with one of our amazingly successful clients, Laura Cabral.

of her husband, Laura took the first step and came in for a consultation. When I asked her what was the last straw that pushed her over the edge and made her come in to Warrior Pride she said “I knew I had to do something and do it quickly when I couldn’t even get up the stairs in my house without being completely out of breath.”

Laura came into Warrior Pride Fitness on her first day trembling with fear. She was extremely nervous and it showed. Although Laura was frightened by her first CrossFit workout, she did a fantastic job and before long realized that CrossFit is not the big bad boogie man she thought. In just a few months Laura had lost 24 lbs, 7% body fat, 2 clothing sizes, and 14.5 total inches. (See her before and after pictures in the ad below)

Laura said starting CrossFit was difficult at first but she was determined to break out of her depression and make some positive changes in her life. Nothing was going to stop her. The more she came to work out the more motivated she got. Many people who face life changing tragedies and fall into a depression never rebound. Not Laura.

While those stats are great, what is really impressive is what Laura overcame to literally force herself to walk in the door at Warrior Pride Fitness in the first place. Laura grew up in a very tight-knit family. She was extremely close to her parents…especially her dad. Tragically, her father passed away of a sudden heart attack 2 years ago. Needless to say Laura was crushed. “I was devastated. He and my mom had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. We were all in shock. I fell into a deep depression and literally cried for weeks.” Laura stopped caring about herself and stopped taking care of herself. She was no longer concerned with how she looked or felt. She gained 20lbs in 6 months and found herself getting more and more unhealthy by the day. She got to a point where she no longer wanted to leave the house anymore. After about 6 months of suffering, Laura realized that she could not longer go on living this way. “I knew that if I didn’t do something and make changes I would end up just like my dad”, Laura said. Laura had seen Warrior Pride Fitness signs around town and began to get interested in CrossFit. She had a feeling that CrossFit could make a difference in her life but was simply too scared to begin. Finally, after a few months of deliberation, and with the constant encouragement

Instead, Laura picked herself up by the boot straps and said enough is enough. Not only has Laura lost 24lbs and 14.5” but she can now run a half mile without stopping…and do so at a pretty quick pace. Not bad for someone who could barely make it up the stairs a few months ago, huh? The thing I love most about Laura’s story is that many of us can relate. Most of us have been slapped in the face by life and had a choice to make. Well Laura made her choice and instead of laying in bed feeling sorry for herself she decided to get up and do something about it. As a result, she looks fantastic, feels fantastic, is no longer embarrassed to leave the house, has increased self-confidence, and has energy to play with and spend quality time with her kids. What a transformation. Well done, Laura. Well done.

The Writing Bug Bites Early at West Side Elementary School

Meet Katherine Guhl, Keara Cochran, and Kendall Gazaway of West Side School. They started their own newsletter, recruiting their classmates to submit articles, book reviews, and jokes. Their little classroom newsletter soon became a school wide newspaper when one of their teachers suggested that they turn their writing venture into a TAG class. The Talented and Gifted (TAG) Learning Academy at West Side Elementary focuses on developing the various aptitudes and potentials for advanced learning and creative productivity in all students. A variety of appealing classes like sewing, robotics, entomology, and house design are available throughout the year. The girls will continue with their Newspaper TAG class through the last quarter of school, and their tiny staff of three has grown to a team of 10, as the writing bug seems to have bitten a few more students in the school!

The Real Estate Market

by Deborah Ratchford

COMPARATIVE MARKET ANALYSIS There is no doubt that Spring is a time when many people are looking to buy or sell a home. Now, more than ever, people want to be educated about today’s market as they evaluate potentially selling their home. I thought it might be helpful to provide you with answers to the most popular requests I get - on my website and in person. • What is my home worth? Is now a good time to sell? For this, a Comparative Market Analysis is always in order. • How quickly will my home sell? Who will see my home? Have your real estate professional review how they will be marketing your home to potential buyers and their overall marketing plan. What does a CMA include and what does it tell the Seller? The value of your home is much more difficult to predict and the information available to home sellers can be less than accurate. While Trulia and Zillow are great home shopping sites, they are rarely correct when it comes to market value. This is because these sites are national, and they don’t take into consideration the local market. In addition houses vary from community to community, and it’s hard to make a fair comparison. Comparison - A CMA is a comparison of your home printed on a quick overview spreadsheet that shows what current homes are on the market, their prices--, and how their features compare to your home. A CMA will also include the properties that have sold, what they sold for and any pending sales. Also, a detailed back up sheet for each property on the spreadsheet is great to compare details such as square footage and other unique features. Sold - The important part of a CMA is always the “sold” prices, often referred to as comps. These determine what buyers have actually paid for homes in your area. A CMA should take into consideration your home, your immediate surrounding area, specific features of your home, local and current market conditions, including what buyers are looking for. Real Estate Agent Expertise - Because CMAs can be somewhat subjective, the agent's experience and expertise in the business and familiarity with the local area can affect the accuracy. Typically, a CMA prepared by an experienced agent with good knowledge of the local market is right in line with your home's appraised value which is one of the first items a buyer will order for your home. A CMA is the first step to insuring a smooth real estate transaction. And, your real estate professional will provide one absolutely free. What should a marketing plan for my home include? The second question concerning marketing is a little more unique to an individual real estate consultant, and depends on how they structure their team. Generally, items you should look for in a marketing plan include a 360 degree approach and might include the following:

Website - Agent specific website(s) which are easy to navigate usually include traits a home buyer would look for - including community news and real estate market statistics. It should also be Search Engine Optimized to be picked up by larger sites like Google, Yahoo and others. The more fresh and relevant your content is, the more likely it is to move up in the search results for buyers. Mobile App - The website should be optimized for mobile devices and agents should have an app that can be downloaded directly from their site to make property details easily available when you are on the go. Agent Network - Most agents also have a website or blog for the community. Blogs that reach out to their network of real estate professionals help to maintain a healthy network. Online Connectivity - An agent should also have a presence with popular syndicated sites such as Zillow and Trulia (plus others) because almost 90% of home owners begin their home search online today. It is important that your home is highlighted where buyers are searching. Social Media - Social media is an absolute MUST in today’s market. Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, Pinterest, Google+, and You Tube are all places where you should expect your agent to be - and your home. Your agent should be well connected within a digital marketing platform. Print Media - And, for a full 360 degree approach, agents should have an offline presence with print media including local community magazines, a relationship building campaign, and other community touch points. It’s so important for agents today to have the right balance of high touch and high tech in their marketing plan. Marketing Updates - You should expect a marketing update from your agent at least every 14 days to make sure you are priced right. This would include the marketing activity on your home, feedback from agents who have viewed the property and other relevant market conditions. If you would like to find out the value of your home, please go to my website and look under Seller’s Resources. I can email you the CMA or, if you need a more accurate assessment, I would be happy to schedule an in-home appointment.

Facials as a Regular Part of Your Skin Care Routine A facial has many benefits and is a recommended part of any skin care routine. The purpose of a facial is to clean and rejuvenate the skin and in general renew it. Any renewal will result in healthier, younger-looking and glowing skin! Facials can range from a simple cleansing to a deep penetration of the first layer of skin cells called the epidermis. There are several types of facials that include a microdermabrasion or a chemical peel. Exfoliation is a key factor for any impactful facial. Exfoliating the skin, is a means to reach deep into the epidermis to remove dead skin cells and reveal newer cells underneath. A microdermabrasion accomplishes this by utilizing a controlled spray of crystals. The crystals act as a deep, targeted abrasion against the skin’s epidermis or outer layer. Though a microdermabrasion is non-surgical and non-invasive, it immediately accelerates the skin’s epidermal layer of cells revealing healthier skin underneath. Microdermabrasions are offered in a variety of locations from health spas and salons. A microdermabrasion in a med spa is recommended, as the microdermabrasion machine will be of a higher grade, and the procedure will be administered under a physician’s care. Receiving a microdermabrasion in a salon or spa versus a med spa is similar to an over-the-counter product versus an actual physician prescription. As a medical esthetician, I recommend a microdermabrasion in a medical spa setting.

The average microdermabrasion takes fifteen minutes. There are virtually no side effects, discomfort or down time. There may be minimal sensitivity for a 24 hour period afterwards. There may also be an immediate red appearance to the skin, but this often fades a short time after the procedure.

The Impact of Pets on Mental Wellness by Leisa A. Bailey, Ph.D. Americans love their pets. A recent survey by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) shows that more than 57% of U.S. households include one or more animals as pets. Many pet lovers intuitively appreciate that quality of life is enhanced from the relationships with animal companions. Numerous scientific studies performed over the past 25 years confirm that physical and emotion health is improved when life is shared with a loved pet. “Pet ownership is good for your health both physically and psychologically”, says Connecticut psychologist Herbert Neiburg, author of Pet Loss: A Thoughtful Guide for Adults and Children (HarperCollins). Additionally, the CDC identifies the following health benefits of pet companionship: decreases in blood pressure, cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels (indicators of heart disease); and feelings of loneliness. Having pets reduce stress immensely. A study recently published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine showed pet interaction reduces the amount of stress related hormones. Additionally, these positive effects are experienced faster than the impact of many drugs taken for stress. The decrease in stress hormones occurred after only 5 to 24 minutes of pleasantly interacting with a dog. Other studies have shown that when people are asked to do a stressful task, having their pet with them lowers their stress levels even more than having a supportive friend or their spouse close by. Pets can help prevent loneliness and isolation. They provide unconditional love, companionship and the opportunity for close connection. Pets encourage playfulness and often revive a sense of fun and adventure in their owners. Physical contact is important to good mental health and loved animal companions provide an opportunity for hugs and touch that might otherwise be missing.

Pets have been found to be especially therapeutic for people with mood and anxiety disorders. Dog ownership has been implicated in helping to alleviate symptoms of depression among terminally ill patients, the elderly, and veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Elders can be particularly at risk of becoming lonely, isolated and depressed. Research looked at people 60 and older, who lived alone. The likelihood that a non-pet owner would be diagnosed as clinically depressed was four times higher than that found in the pet owning people of the same age. There was also evidence that these older pet owners required fewer medical services and were generally more satisfied with their lives. Children benefit greatly from the relationships with pets. Some studies have suggested that children with pets have higher self-esteem and lower levels of fear than those from pet-free homes. New research in the journal Pediatrics shows that children who live in a home with a pet during their first year of life are more likely to be healthier. “It’s more support in a growing body of evidence that exposure to pets early in life can stimulate the immune system to do a better job of fighting off infection,” Dr. Danielle Fisher, of St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California. Additionally children learn responsibility, compassion, and empathy from having pets. Pets are never critical and don’t give orders. They always love and provide a sense of security. Studies have shown that pets can help calm hyperactive or overly aggressive children. As wonderful and beneficial as life with pets can be, it is not for everyone. Owning a pet is comforting only for those who love and appreciate domestic animals. If you’re simply not a “pet person”, pet ownership is not going to provide you with any therapeutic benefits or improve your life.
